La Dolce Vita with Alitalia, Pt 1: LHR-FCO-GOA
Hi!
Thanks for clicking on my latest report, covering my recent spate of flights with Alitalia. So, what flights did I take? Well, over a 7 days period, I took 7 Alitalia flights, visiting 8 airports and notching up nearly 15,000 miles of flying. Not bad, especially for the bargain cost of just £154 (€182/$243)….which works out at approximately £0.00104 per mile Who ever said flying was an expensive method of transport?!
AZ 303 London LHR – Rome FCO, A321
AZ 1391 Rome FCO – Genoa GOA, A320
AZ 786 Milan MXP – Tokyo NRT, B772
AZ 785 Tokyo NRT – Rome FCO, B772
AZ 1603 Rome FCO – Bari BRI, A319
AZ 7108 Brindisi BDS – Milan LIN, A319
AZ 230 Milan LIN – London LHR, A320
My route with all seven flights, courtesy of GC Mapper, of this report:
And the European detail:
I’ll be splitting the report into 3 parts:
Part 1, LHR-FCO-GOA
Part 2, MXP-NRT-FCO-BRI
Part 3, BDS-LIN-LHR
The map of Part 1:
So, how did this trip come about? Well, as I mentioned in my report last year, AZ released some rather cheap domestic fares from MXP to BRI, with connections in NRT or SIN. So, back in September I flew MXP-FCO-NRT as the first leg of my Asian trip. A few fellow a.netters decided to take a group flight in January. Well, I’ve already done the flight once, why not do it again, especially at such low prices. Sultanils has already posted his impression of the MXP-NRT flight.
So, how should I get to Italy to start my trip? Well, AZ were having another offer, I think it was 15% off any flight. I have a think, and in the end decided to start my trip with 2 nights in Genoa via Rome, before getting the train over to MXP. And after Bari? Well, why not go all the way to the bottom of the heel? My return flights were therefore booked as Brindisi to London via Milan Linate.
So, onto the trip…
As with many of my trips, it started with a bus, then the free Heathrow Express over to Terminal 4. This trip would be all hand luggage, so presenting, my lovely new carry on….
Ok, so having said it would all be hand luggage, I have to tell you I did actually check the bag in for this leg as I had a few bottles of water. I also figured that baggage reclaim in Genoa would be pretty quick.
This would be my first outbound from Terminal 4 since flying Sri Lankan to Male in 2007. I was interested to see what improvements have been made. The lift from the Hex brought me straight into a queue…oh dear. Actually, no bother, this is just an incredibly long and winding queue for the Air India desks (DEL and BOM, both at similar times).
I had OLCIed, which is sometime buggy, but does let you change your seat right up until the gate.
There was no queue for the AZ SSCI machines, or for the bag drop. The lady at the desk was very friendly, and tagged my bag. Security was nearly deserted, and before I knew it, I was in the departure lounge. Time from the Central Bus Terminal to T4 post-security….less than 20 minutes…excellent.
T4 is probably the smallest of the LHR terminals.
FIDS. 3 things of note: LN is back serving LHR to TIP, QR have three DOH departures in 70 minutes, and BG is flying direct from LHR to the tiny Sylhet airport, covered in my recent Bangaldeshi report.
I recently acquired an unlimited Priority Pass courtesy of Amex, which I was keen to put to use. Sadly, T4 lacks a priority pass lounge since the KL lounge became the Skyteam one. I therefore had about an hour to just have a wander around. Airside is pretty nice….busy, but nowhere near as hectic as the other terminals.
There are some nice views over the tarmac…in fact, you get much better views from T4 than any other terminal, except maybe T5B and C.
The MH Whalejet
United 777
And SQ and TG
Why do they paint individual plane markings on, when a) they don’t always stop exactly on the marker, and b) the airbridge can move anyway?
Red tails and CX
UA 757
And the QR 787 parked next to us
An hour before our ETD I-BIXR appeared, and taxied onto stand
Sorry, lots of photos. I just can’t get enough of that great livery. The lounge gradually filled up.
Go to Gate
Someone in TAS doesn’t know their airport codes.
For no apparent reason, boarding was a little late. After pre-boarding, the numerous agents seemed to be a bit confused about what to do. They were very strict about who could board when. Sadly, no one seemed to be in charge, so different agents would announce different rows, but not loud enough to be heard. To confound matters, they called rows in pairs starting from the back, with big gaps between announcements. Ok, it’s nice not to have a free for all, but this was ridiculous. As such, despite only have around a 60% load, boarding took an age.

There was a bit of a scrum at the gate. The bus to the plane was full. My view from the window.
Despite the availability showing similar to the LHR-FCO flight, this flight seems to be much busier. Still, there is an empty middle seat.
I was quite surprised to see that my seat back actually had a working TV this time….how unexpected. This is an ex-Air One plane.
The safety card is denoted as being “enhanced”….i.e. there are PTVs onboard
I’m surprised to see that my seat (the only one that I can see) has been expanded to give the full business class width. Nice treat for a short flight. The armrest just flips across, fiving you an extra couple of inches (sometimes it makes all the difference).
With the safety demo done (live, rather than on the TV which stayed blue), we taxi off to the runway. We pass I-DISA (the plane that took me to Tokyo last time) on the way
Passing Blue Panorama
And another AZ jet
Off to GOA, just a few minutes late
Good legroom near the front
I was hoping for some reasonable content on the PTVs, especially after the purser announced that they were now “active”. Sadly, the only programming was a slideshow of scenes from around Italy…yawn.
Catering on this leg was basically identical to the last, although domestics don’t have booze on board. I get a cup to tea and water. I like that they offer “with lemon” as an option (the green packet), rather than just “with milk”. Another packet of nibbles and a wet wipe accompany.
The airport is pretty much deserted…a FR plane takes off as soon as we land.
On stand
Walking to baggage reclaim
As hoped, the bags don’t take long to appear.
I love the Genoa airport code! I’ll be keeping this tag!
GOAs terminal is small. This is arrivals
I head outside to wait for the slightly overpriced express bus. It costs EUR 6. Taxis charge a flat EUR 7 pp if there are 3 people in a taxi.
GOA airport isn’t far from Genova city centre. I was staying in the Hotel Bellevue. The view from the roof was pretty good!
Genova by night:
And by day…more views from the hotel balcony:
Handy for the station too
They have a great harbour area
I decided to take the public boat bus to a town further down the coast…bonus was that it followed the length of GOAs runway. Shame GOA is so quiet.
Lots of nice boats in Genova’s waters
AZ flew overhead, inbound from FCO
The little town down the coast where we turned around
And a few more photos of Genoa at sunset
One oddity I found…the Icelandic consulate. Didn’t look like much was happening within
And finally, you can’t go to Italy and not have a pizza….this was a fantastic lunch deal. Large pizza, beer, espresso and dessert for EUR 5…can’t be beaten!
As always, all comments and questions welcome, and thanks for reading about my latest trip!
Parts 2 and 3 will be out soonish. Apart from those, I’ve got a few trips to come in the next few months:
Late Jan/early Feb will see me complete my Star Alliance lounge tour of Europe (i.e. do the lounges I want to see before my LH Silver card finally gives way to Blue) with LH, LO & OS routing LHR-DUS-WAW-VIE-LHR
A rather hastily and still as of yet poorly planned trip to Zimbabwe has been booked for mid-February. Routing is a bit eclectic, on a combination of Aer Lingus and Etihad. BHX-DUB-MAN-AUH-JNB-AUH-LHR. Flight between JNB and Zimbabwe/Zambia haven’t been booked yet.
And Easter will herald another inaugural, Cityjet’s new LCY-DRS route, along with a return NUE-LCY.

Thank you Nils....copy and pasted the wrong bit....missed out the LHR-FCO flight...here we go!
January 2013
London Heathrow (LHR) – Rome Fuimicino (FCO)
Alitalia AZ 303
Scheduled: 1220-1600 (2h20m)
Actual: 1248-1540 (1h52m)
Airbus A321, I-BIXR “Piazza di Campidoglio, Roma”
Economy
My seat
QR next door
As the loads suggested, the flight wasn’t too busy
Once boarding was competed I hopped across to the aisle seat…I’d forgotten when OLCIing in which side the Alps would be. This is the DL 764 to MSP
So, nearly half an hour late, we rotate into a sunny winter’s sky
Terminal 4
The crew weren’t in much of a rush today…it took nearly an hour for the trolley to reach me. I opt for a tasty red OJ and sparkling water. A wet towelette and one of the many different types of Classisca snacks comes with the drinks.
Moving acorss the aisle paid off…there were some great views between banks of cloud
To break up the tedium of the journey, I headed to the back galley to ask for another bag of tarelli….i’m given a glass of water, and then 3 bags of chocolate cookies. Thanks! Terribly friendly staff on AZ.
With the tables cleared, we began our descent into FCO. My window fogged up quite a lot, so not many photos here.
Welcome to Rome!
We parked on a remote stand, after passing the ATR farm (AZ operated by Carpatair)
We were bussed over to the non-Schengen arrivals point. I was first off the bus, and into the screening area. It’s annoying they can’t let other EU non-Schengen arrivals directly access the deparute lounge, rather than having to go through security again.
In the corridor towards the Schengen area
FIDS. I’m on the 1720 to Genova
Whilst LHR T4 lacks a Priority Pass lounge, FCO doesn’t (in fact, has 2 in the Schengen pier).Today’s lounge is the I Mosiaci, mostly used by Star Alliance. The lady on the desk was very friendly, although it took a while for my card to be approved.
Now, the lounge itself….it’s not great. There was no self service bar, just a manned bar being operated by a very depressed looking woman.
I ordered an espresso and water, and took a seat whilst using the wifi.
Thankfully, my connection was short, so after a second espresso, I bid adieu to the lounge lady, and headed to my bus gate. On the way I passed gate C13…for some reason this gate number has stuck in my head ever since using it many years ago (like circa 1996) flying FCO-LHR on a BA 757.

Of course! Was great to fly with you!

Yes, it was an odd experience

Thanks Udo. GOA would be great if there was a bit more variety.....AZ and FR gets quite boring!

Yes, £154 is correct.....the LHR-GOA/BDS-LHR were a standard sale for £6 + tax (£93 total). The NRT flights were the previously publicised £61 fare 9down from £a lot. Both cash fares bought directly over the next without miles (in fact, all earning miles (except the Italian domestics)).

This view looks very familiar to me....I was there Tuesday.
Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter): Why do they paint individual plane markings on, when a) they don’t always stop exactly on the marker, and b) the airbridge can move anyway?
It may seem like it's irrelevant but they are there for a purpose. If they are over the line or short, they are supposed to move the plane. The placement of the line is so that it gives clearance behind the aircraft to the ramp area for other aircraft and for the jet bridge to be able to reach the aircraft door and be clear of the engines. If it's parked in the wrong spot, there might be a problem. Trust me, I drive those things every day when I'm at work.
Genoa looks like a wonderful city! I've been thru with the train several times and may have stayed a night but didn't explore the city. It looks like I should explore the city more when I eventually go back.
Flights on AZ look okay. Too bad it took so long for the drink cart to reach your row.

I liked Genoa when I was there. I called in there on a cruise ship and thought it was quite pleasant. As for the prices in Italy having just come back from a cruise around Italy and Spain and France I found the prices in Italy the best. I guess coming from Ireland anywhere is cheap lol...
Hope to see the next part soon .

Nice report of a much more adventurous trip for a very convenient price. Great you could participate with a bunch of a.netters into this interesting experience, I think we should congratulate AZ for such opportunities. Hope they come in the future as well.
AZ seems OK for these European hops. Having the idea of hitting Genoa before flying East is a great opportunity, I have only been to the harbor several times to take the ferry to BCN which is a nice way of coming back home, slow but nice to cross the Mediterranean. It looks like a very nice city, I have driven down its winding streets to the harbor, so the views of local streets is very informative to me.
Enjoyed reading ti and great to see you had some local food... who can not eat a pizza when in Italy?
Looking forward to the next report.
Salut!
