Well, I´am in Muscat currently and as promised, here are the pictures.
At the Bait al Zubair museum
With you´re steps closely pursued
The beautiful garden
Flowers and palms
With the blue sky above. Reminder, it´s late November
and I should fly back to Germany tonight. Something to miss soon
Let´s go for a view to Mutrah harbour with the more modern stuff
And the Aida tourists are still in town, heavy biz for all the local guides
Looks like nice this way
Mutrah harbour front
Dhau´s
The blue mosque
How to spend the day in Oman
The Sultan Qabus mosque ahead
The entrance
Looks like perfectly well cared for
But no way for me to join now
One look at the clock shows me, it´s better now to go for the airport!.

Muscat International Airport

Service WY 623 operated by Oman Air
Scheduled: 18.10 // 19.15
Returned the car without hassles till now.
Simply stop at the last terminal entrance, check the counter and someone pick it up.
Just for a look around now.
Huge palms opposite the terminal
The main entrance. That´s for sure a small place here
Also this way
Where to go now?
It´s not that small inside. This way for the Omani colours
The ticket is booked directly via the airlines website, the fare is acceptable, oneway, 70.00 Euro´s.
A real good feature is the free seat selection mode during booking.
Simply no time to wait to leave my bag at the counter staffed by a nice young woman.
Close to no time to wait at security also, lucky me and the officer at the next desk decided to give me a stamp without questions.
Ready now for a view like this
The Plaza Premium Lounge should be also worth a visit.
Courtesy by Diners
Nice offers
But no apron view
A few customers only here
The new terminal under construction opposite the runway
Omani style, sure
Oman Air´s part of the apron
These tail´s are simply to big!
What about this one?
Parked at the apron
No action here
And a lonely non Omani plane this way
The old terminal
More Oman Air on the way
Till bus boarding starts from gate 17
Some pictures on the apron
With the clear sky above
Welcome to Oman Air
And A4O-BC "Ras al Had", since 19.12.2008 with Oman Air
The 737-800 like on schedule.
This is leg no. 66 on type, a new entry to the log
14 examples are in the actual fleet
6.10 pm, ontime, "Oman" should spent some 50 minutes now in the air for DXB right away from the 3584 meters runway "Two-Six".
27 degrees and clear sky. Should I really go?.
Oh, well, I should!.
Cockpit crew is according to the names from Oman.
All infos from the purser prior to departure and later on really nice and detailed inflight.
No route info, flight level is 20000 feet.
Comfy oldfashioned mixed bluegreen fabric seats and the cabin is not that really clean here
A low loaded rear cabin, lucky me in 34F, the last row and three seats for me.
The load is 80%, a good number of biz style people, also some Europeans on the way
Cabin crew is two male FA´s, one young and nice together with the middle aged and also nice purser. Three female FA´s are also on duty. One middle aged Asian style, biz friendly, one middle aged European, ok
and one young arabic woman, black hair, well built, oh yes, nice, really nice!.
Some locals are also on travel today
Legroom is acceptable here
Just by surprise, the safety card is also written in german language
Oman Air´s magazine
Service also on this short flight
Soon thereafter approach for DXB is announced.
Touchdown at the 4477 meters runway "Three-Zero-Left". Also clear sky here and the temperature is 26 degrees. 7.00 pm is 15 minutes ahead to schedule.
Parked at a finger gate and a long, long walk for immigration now.
It´s recommendable to have a good time buffer to do something like me now.
Service Austrian Airlines OS 840 operated by Tyrolean Airways
Scheduled: 02.30 // 05.55
Well, immigration is busy here to say the least, some 30 minutes to wait. Ok, there is time enough for the next flight, but anyway directed for several times to other queues, but it doesn´t work faster in the end.
The officer was just a little bit surprised about the answer for his question "How long do you stay in Dubai?".
"Just a couple of hours for the next flight", but anyway
stamps my passport and welcomed me to Dubai.
My bag doesn´t like to drive more circles and is stored beside the belt. But it is there!.
Out in the public for the Star counters.
The gold one is open, one more minute to wait only
and I hope to see the bag tomorrow in STR again.
This is the return from STR-FRA-AUH-MCT and the fare per leg two and three this time is 130.00 Euro´s secured by Ebookers.
Seats are selected also in advance here.
Not amused to say the least with OS this time.
During my check a couple of days prior to the flight, I´ve noticed that my last row window is never more existent. It seems a plane change and why do they not change me for another window?. No, there is simply no seat for me now.
Ok, quickly changed for the exit row window, which is available.
Well, one more lounge to go
The offers
Looks like ok this way
The lounge itself is small, overcrowded, there is close to no space to sit, so my time is limited here.
C39 is the gate to go now
Some interesting destinations on the screen
A lot of people around the gate, looks like a good load
tonight.
Bus boarding for the first time in Dubai.
Good for a logo shot
And to secure the registration.
OE-LAZ "India" is the 767-300 like on schedule and so it is in the end.
New to the log and leg no. 6 on type
On the way since 09.08.1999 with Lauda Air, Lufthansa, Lauda Air again and finally Austrian. One of six in the fleet.
Here are a couple of stories, principal actor OE-LAZ: http://avherald.com/h?article=42696ee5 http://avherald.com/h?article=45947d8d http://avherald.com/h?article=44dc88dd
Sure an interesting plane!.
Boarding now
02.45 am, "Austrian" runs 15 minutes late now for the 06.00 hours to Vienna.
Departure from the 4477 meters "One-Two-Right", still clear sky and 22 degrees.
It seems a good decision for 17K legroom wise
with the strange green fabric, pretty well used seats
and two full windows available
The inseat video screen
The safety card for three birds only
Cabin crew serving my seat is a distanced style middle aged Austrian blonde woman.
New York, well maybe
A view for the cabin
Let´s go now
My seatmate in the aisle is an arrogant to say the least middle aged Austrian guy.
He takes off his shoes as soon as he takes his seat and believe me, the socks don´t smell like perfume, no I dislike this behavior.
The load is 80%.
Well, something to eat and drink short after departure
The in seat screens are shut down soon thereafter.
Why?. The pax want to sleep now, is the answer.
But why on earth in eco only, the biz screens are still working.
No, definitely no, I want to have a view for the map.
But my opinion doesn´t count here tonight.
Ok, I´am in the exit row and these place is mostly a bit colder than the main cabin. But this is not only a nightflight, no it´s a nightmare fitting to the no screen story.
It is cold here, it is so cold here that I trembled everytime when I´am waking up.
The smallish blanket doesn´t help.
My camera in the bag down on the floor no longer works, the battery shows the red sign, it´s so cold I´am out of any energy.
Is there a notary on the plane?. I should write my testament right now. I´am not sure if I survive these nightshift unharmed.
The camera is back to life after some time in my jacket pocket.
After the experience on the flying sauna earlier this year, this is by far the coldest icebox I´ve ever been on.
Well, the main meal close to Vienna doesn´t help to improve my impression.
The bread roll is ok, but the omelette, no stay away, please
No comment at all from the front office.
No route or flightlevel info till Vienna.
Touchdown at the 3500 meters "Two-Nine", 05.45 am, ten minutes ahead to schedule, 2 degrees and light fog.
The automatic parking signal system is inop and so all the planes need to wait for a follow me car.
Finger disembarking at VIE
What about a well heated lounge now?.

Service Austrian Airlines OS 177 operated by Tyrolean Airways
Scheduled: 07.20 // 08.40
This is the lounge in the new, recently opened, built for years, terminal wing
At least STR looks like ok from gate F21
The offers here
This place is also well used to say the least.
And this means it´s soon time to go for the gate.
What do you expect from a Monday morning service on a business oriented route like this?.
People all around. Is this really possible to fit them all into a tiny Fokker?
Well, it´s the scheduled F100 here.
"Dnepropetrovsk" is registered OE-LVN, leg no. 34 on type and one more, new to the log.
In the air since 27.11.1991 with American Airlines, Jetsgo and Tyrolean. One of 15 in the fleet
7.20 am, 1.00 hour to go by "Tyrolean" for the homebase from "Two-Nine" like arrivals.
Fog and 2 degrees only here.
Me and the engine
Clouds up there
And the fully booked cabin. The load is 100%, also upfront no open seat to spot. Mostly biz travellers with the strange green fabric seats again. Ok, nothing else expected.
It´s clean so far here
Cabin crew is one middle aged, ok style woman together with another young woman, large, blond hair, black glasses. Had I ever said before that I like glasses?. And a somewhat tough style.
Ok, it´s Austria!.
Legroom is limited here in 19A with the aisle seat also taken
Cockpit crew is from Austria, the captain with short and less detailed infos inflight.
Nothing about the route, but flightlevel is 27000 feet.
Safety instructions
Approaching STR
And the late arrival snack is good this time.
It´s a cheese cake together with free drinks
Touchdown at "Two-Five". 8.35 am, short ahead to schedule.
Bye now for Tyrolean
And welcome to a wet and dull STR with 6 rainy degrees
Ok, ok, it´s November here and my sunbeam memory is well loaded from Oman now, so no complaints, please!.
Here are the conclusions:
1.) Oman Air MCT-DXB: Short, relaxed and really nice crew.
2.) Tyrolean Airways DXB-VIE: Survived!.
3.) Tyrolean Airways VIE-STR: Cramped seating but a calm flight.
Some two months now with biz only domestic flights,
but there is something to look forward to:
Absolutely no idea where this picture is taken, but it seems it´s on the way for Mexico!.

Hola Markus!
As I was sitting in the sauna in my Sunday morning visit to the gym I anticipated the idea of having one of your reports when back home, and sure you did not disappoint me this sunny windy Sunday morning here. Glad I can keep track of your TRs on Sunday mornings... eine gute Tradition!
Muscat looks really nice, cute and manicured garden and buildings, I am sure it is worth a visit.
Oman Air has one of the most beautiful liveries in the skies, really beautiful colors and seems service is more than adequate, even for these short hops, really nice.
Austrian seems to be disappointing here, I had never heard of an airline that shuts down the whole IFE, what are individual screens for? They need to rethink this idea, maybe there was something else involved on this idea.
The cold on planes is not only an OS exclusivity, I think many crews like to turn down the temperature, frozen passengers do not bother them as much during the night, or so it seems. So your final comment on OS

Hi Markus,
interesting report with nice pictures from Oman. Bad to hear that the screens were turned off in Y Class on the OS 763. Never heard that before. Did you ask the purser about it?
I try to avoid exit rows on longer flights because it can get very cold there. And it's certainly worse if they cool down the cabin temperature additionally.
The meal looks fine, but I cannot judge the main course. Did they offer different meals?
All long-haul planes will get new interiors within the next few months, two planes have already been refurbished. Maybe I'll try the new J Class later this year.

Mahaban bek, Markus.
Good to see your continuation posted. Nice photos of Oman showing the delightful architecture, understated compared to some of the more elaborate examples in other countries of the region. I can quite imagine that the airport was a delight for you: no jet-bridges but boarding from the apron by stairs. The absence of crowds when you were there stands in stark contrast to the hubbub that is DXB.
The livery of WY, whether on the ERJ or the 738 looks very stylish, especially the colours, suggesting elegant sophistication combined with modernity yet the apparent lack of cleanliness is disappointing. WY have a reputation for good cabin service and their business class product on some aircraft seems superior to some airlines' first.
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 1): How long do you stay in Dubai?".
"Just a couple of hours for the next flight",
Shame that you couldn't book the suitcase all the way through and avoid the hassle of immigration altogether. You would still have to face security but it is still one queue less.
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 1): I´ve noticed that my last row window is never more existent.
A disappointment for someone who likes the back seat on the bus. But at least you ended up with extra legroom as "compensation", despite the sub-arctic temperature. The condition of cabin and the indifference of the crew don't inspire confidence.
Is there no individual control on the IFE screens or handsets? It does seem unusual to shut the whole system down in Y. It rather defeats the purpose of individual seat-back screens. Does OS not hand out amenity kits with eye shades, as other airlines do?

Hi Markus
Thanks for the interesting read. Looks like you had a good time in Muscat, I'm quite surprised by how much you managed to squeeze into the short time you were there.
As for Oman Air, they're a great airline. Before I tried them the first time I always thought they would be like Emirates or Qatar but in actual fact that can hardly do them justice because they're simply so much better.
Alas, the same cannot really be said of Austrian Airlines. Judging by your comments and pictures it seems as though they're still quite a mess. I guess just adding an 'operated by Tyrolean' sticker does not constitute an improved product.

Hi Markus,
Good to read you last installment from 2012. Great pics of Muscat, the Blue mosque looks beautiful. It sure seems like a good destination to catch those rays on sun in the European winter.
Oman Air, well love the livery, so stylish. Seems strange to see the 737 and the E-jet on the tarmac when you’re only used to seeing the heavies over here in Europe.
Looks pretty good, what was it exactly? Some sort of wrap?

Everything about OS seems wrong. Those green seats look so shabby and dated. I may only have a short flight lined up with them next week, but am sure intrigued about the experience that awaits.
That will be really interesting to see you´re impression.

Hi Markus, good to read the conclusion to your trip, and to see a few pictures of Muscat. That Austrian/Tyrolean flight between DXB-VIE doesn't sound too great, and the green seat covers make the plane look... Well a bit old fashioned really.

Hi Markus,
Thanks for this episode again! The contrast couldn't be bigger in this report: Oman Air looks really nice in every aspect while Austrian errr. Tyrolean looks like a real letdown. A real shame and a far cry from the LH exemplary service you received on the outbound.
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): A real good feature is the free seat selection mode during booking.
Now how many airlines do still have that? for Oman Air definitely!
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): Just by surprise, the safety card is also written in german language

Thank you and that was exactly my impression with OS/VO here, you know.

Yes, definitely.
Quoting Sultanils (Reply 20):
Not by surprise, they expected your business
Hah, good point here!.
Quoting Sultanils (Reply 20): Nice to fly on an all time widebody classic, the 763. Too bad that was the only good thing about that flight
As far I was looking forward to this classic 763 experience as bad was it in the end.
Quoting Sultanils (Reply 20): The seat's upholstery looks really messy and that large bilboard in front makes it look even more cheap...

Hello Markus
Great to follow up the story. Oman looks good!
However I'm a bit shocked by OS who turns of the PTV's. mid-flight. Definate have not heard of that before.
