Just returned this morning from an awesome week in Alaska. My wife's sister and brother-in-law are stationed in Anchorage. Sure helps to have a free place to stay up there. They just had their first child, so it made for a really good excuse to take the trip.

Departed ATL on July 13 at approx 6:15pm local time. Our flight was non-stop aboard N174DZ. Seven hours and ten minutes later (about 9:30 in Anchorage) we broke through the cloud deck at about 4000' and was that ever a magnificent view. We were just south of Anchorage over the Seward highway. Being from the southeast U.S., I don't often see 2000-3000' mountains with plenty of snow in July!

As for the week, we tried to see everything we could. We visited Alyeska Ski Resort (no snow there, unfortunately). Stopped in at the Plettner kennels--owned by 9-time Iditirod finisher Lynda Plettner. Fortunately, we were the only ones there and she personally gave us a 2-hour tour and a sled ride. We then visited Denali National Park. Did a jet-boat river ride and had some great views of Mt McKinley. Later in the week, we traveled down to Seward for 6-hour Kenai National Park glacier cruise (saw several bald eagles, about ten Orca, two humpbacks, lots of puffins, a few doll porpoise and got some great Handycam footage of a HUGE piece of glacier calving. All things considered, this was one of the best trips I have ever taken.

When it was time to return, we were on the red-eye back to ATL. Departed ANC at approximately 8:00pm local time on N1402A. The return flight was six hours and twenty-five minutes arriving approximately 6:30am.
