Hi all!

Time to write another trip report, don't you think? Due to personal reasons, I was and still am not able to book anything big or stay away for a long time. So a day trip would do just fine. A little while later I booked three flights:

- BRU-ARN with SAS B737-600
- ARN-OSL with NAX B737-800
- OSL-BRU with SN RJ100

the B737-600 was still on my 'to fly list' and Norwegian.no has my attention ever since they ... well.. they just have my attention. Unfortunately, there were no other way I could fly back home from OSL besides with Brussels Airlines.
To keep this limited, I could say I wasn't looking forward to this experience because they have disappointed me in the past.

Moving on!

The best way to go to BRU from my town is by train. Taking the car at that hour is suicide and stressy. I arrived on-time, joining the mass of people leaving BRU in the morning rush.

I bought an aviation magazine and cleared the automatic ticket screening. Again, people did not understand how to scan it. How I feel smart sometimes   . After that, the long famous walk to the security check (Terminal A + T).
Alright, let's start with flight number one.

Route:BRU-ARN
Airline: Scandinavian Air System
Aircraft: Boeing 737-683
Registration: SE-DTH
Age: 13.2 years old
Load factor: 90-95%
Seat: 10F
Crew 2 female flight attendants, one male flight attendant. Female captain, Male First Officer
___________________________________________________

I still had some spare time so I took some pictures of planes, just to honor my nickname.

http://imageshack.us/a/img4/6200/dsc0012xrv.jpg

After 10 minutes of spotting and chatting on the tablet, I saw something blue, short and fat coming towards me.
Of course it was the SAS 736!

http://imageshack.us/a/img651/7246/dsc0008on.jpg

Another 10 or 15 minutes later, we were told to stand-by for boarding. Seems like the 736 doesn't need long to turn around. Boarding card got scanned and no ID had to be checked... (?)

So the boarding procedure was fast and convenient. Before I knew I was being greeted by two elder flight attendants who were very friendly. The cockpit door was open and due to passengers slowing down the boarding procedure, I was able to enjoy the views of the cockpit. Then I found out I would have my first female captain on this flight! One of the flight attendants found it a bit strange I couldn't stop staring into the cockpit  After a minute I was able to reach my seat, 10F (extra legroom due to exit row).

http://imageshack.us/a/img24/8673/dsc0014got.jpgWindow view.

http://imageshack.us/a/img14/1300/dsc0015lz.jpgLegroom!

Then the usual procedure: Closing doors, ground handling falling back, safety procedure and push back!
One of the two female attendant asked if I was familiar with the safety procedures regarding the overwing exit.
I told her it was not my first time I was seated near or at an emergency exit. She smiled and thanked me.

Then the captain welcomed us, giving a lot of information regarding flight path, traffic and possible some heavy turbulence when climbing after take off from BRU. I never felt a bump so I guess we were lucky  .

http://imageshack.us/a/img266/1038/dsc0016cjs.jpgRolling to the active runway for departure.

http://imageshack.us/a/img844/3138/dsc0017do.jpgInteresting traffic!

http://imageshack.us/a/img404/3972/dsc0019tj.jpgI guess that was causing the turbulence the captain mentioned!

Before us for take off: Jet Airways A330-200, United B767-400.
After us: Brussels Airlines A320, Brussels Airlines DHC8-400 and Jetairfly B767-300.

http://imageshack.us/a/img217/5575/dsc0021hbw.jpgTake off!

10 minutes after take off, the cabin crew commenced service, one flight attendant for 'Economy Plus', one flight attendant taking care of the free coffee and one helping the first flight attendant with service for Economy class.
Efficient way to take care of the cabin!

http://imageshack.us/a/img560/904/dsc0027qtc.jpgI got a free coffee + twice a refill and Sprite accompanied with an Apple cake. Delicious by the way!

http://imageshack.us/a/img853/5573/dsc0028yzv.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img834/8891/dsc0031rv.jpgDecending after almost 2 hours of flying! I was curious to see Sweden from above for the first time.

http://imageshack.us/a/img248/4852/dsc0042fu.jpgVery smooth landing.

http://imageshack.us/a/img819/2131/dsc0046xi.jpgStalking me today.

http://imageshack.us/a/img152/9687/dsc0048yw.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img16/3448/dsc0053gb.jpgStill on my 'to fly list'.

http://imageshack.us/a/img546/594/dsc0056kk.jpgWhat a beautiful reflection, oh wait.. That's my plane.

We arrived safely and deboarding went smooth and fast! Before leaving, I asked one of the friendly flight attendants to visit the cockpit for a second. The captain approved and I had an interesting talk with both of them for over 5 minutes.
She asked if I wanted to take some pictures. Which I did!

http://imageshack.us/a/img208/1686/dsc0057kkq.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img545/1862/dsc0064ru.jpgFollowing the path to the terminal has never been so easy.

http://imageshack.us/a/img35/6131/dsc0072qj.jpgARN Terminal!

http://imageshack.us/a/img42/6480/dsc0079tg.jpgLast few of the nice bird.

I was curious to see the terminal building. One of the better I have seen so far. No hassle and easy to find your gate.
A little while later I saw the SAS 736 leaving for another flight with an interesting bird in the background.

The aircraft was already at the gate when I arrived. I guess she arrived late the night before and had some spare time now. The crew of today was good looking and very young. One of the bigger differences between NAX and SAS already... The age of the crew. That's also a way to cut costs.

Thankfully these younger cabin crew members were very friendly and know what they were doing!

Another fast boarding procedure and a very warm welcome. I wowed when I found out the aircraft had the 'Sky Interior'!

Flying time was a little less than one hour so the crew started with service asap. I didn't order anything because I only had SEK and EUR in my wallet and they only accepted Credit cards. Ah well, I decided to eat and drink something at OSL instead.

So after some pizza and a giant Pepsi at Oslo Airport, I headed down to the gate since the connection time wasn't that long.

http://imageshack.us/a/img805/4721/dsc0171j.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img29/9923/dsc0173ww.jpgThe plane arrived 10 minutes early... Well well, Brussels Airlines changed that much since my last short haul flight with them?

I decided to stay seated for a while. Unfortunately that was a bad decision. By the time I entered the plane, there was no room in the overhead compartments. Hand luggage is a pain the *ss for many airlines. So it is for SN apparently.

http://imageshack.us/a/img839/9840/dsc0177we.jpg

I saw my pre-selected seat was already taken by a girl but I saw an entire row empty at the back, row 19 right side. I saw two flight attendants at the back (one of them was a trainee). I asked if I could please change to that row.

Flight attendant: ''Sir, as of this moment I do not have the list of the passenger load. So I can not tell. Stay in the aisle and wait for further instructions'' She continued her conversation with the trainee and exchanging some experiences and laughs. I felt ignored and superfluous.

A minute later, I saw a girl struggling with her hand luggage since there was no room in the overhead compartments. Well then, that must have been the job of the stewardess in the back of the plane... Making sure everybody is comfortable and assisting when needed. But no, she was too busy gossiping and chatting with the trainee.
So I decided to help her a hand and said up loud: ''Too bad there are no flight attendants nearby who could assist with your luggage!'' She laughed and the flight attendant gave me an evil stare... Geez.

Boarding was completed, captain welcomed us and thanked us for choosing Brussels Airlines. Accidentally I replied with: ''Well, it is not that I have any choice, do I?'' The guy sitting next to me busted out laughing and admitted this was his only choice as well.

http://imageshack.us/a/img826/3550/dsc0179vr.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img823/8226/dsc0180fs.jpg

Captain added to his speech that we needed to be de-iced before take-off and explained why. This would 'only' take 10 minutes.
Believe it or not, it was my first de-icing  .

After take off, it was starting to get too hot in the cabin. Many tried to cool off by opening the gaspers, so did I.
After the seat belt sign was turned off, they jumped out of their seats and started taking care of the business passengers and economy flex. They received 'free' meals and beverages, unlimited. By unlimited I mean they took care of business and economy flex passengers for an hour. After that, they started to take care of the economy class. I refused to buy something just because it took them over an hour with such a heating problem. Free water would have been a ''warm'' welcome. Unbelievable service. I tried to get some sleep to kill some time. Admit it, flying 2 hours in a crampy, hot avrojet RJ100 is a bit too much. Would have loved to have something bigger on that route.

The only positive remark I can make is that the landing was smooth, which isn't difficult with the right conditions either.

http://imageshack.us/a/img651/9425/dsc0205fn.jpgWhile deboarding, at last.

http://imageshack.us/a/img831/8643/dsc0207sj.jpgAgain, Finnair followed me till BRU!

Right, I would like to end this trip report with a short summary and scores...

----
SAS BRU-ARN
Flight quality: 9/10
Seat: 7/10
Legroom: 10/10+
Service: 8/10
Quality food/beverage: 8/10

Conclusion: SAS is a nice airline to fly with. I do not mind paying for on board services and you get free coffee refills!
They remain a classic airline to me with nothing too fancy or new modern stuff on board.

-----

Norwegian.no ARN-OSL
Flight quality: 10/10
Seat: 7/10 (thin recaro seats)
Legroom: 9/10
Service: 10/10+
Quality food/beverage: /

Conclusion: Norwegian Air Shuttle must be the best Low Cost Airline in Europe! I regret the fact they only accept credit cards but then again I already decided to eat something in OSL. I would definitely fly with NAX again.

-----

Brussels Airlines OSL-BRU
Flight quality: 6/10
Seat: 6/10
Legroom: 7/10
Service: 0/10
Quality food/beverage: /

Conclusion: I decided for my own this would be the last flight with Brussels Airlines (short haul, long haul product is different and somewhat better) and I do recommend to search for an alternative. There is no use reporting this to SN, they will see I'm a member of Miles&More and try to cool me off with only 125 miles which is nothing.

I really had a fun day and I recommend to do the same somehow. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you who the winner is… Price for best flight goes to *drum roll* Norwegian.no!

I hope you enjoyed my long trip report! Stay tuned and please, feel free to leave a comment  .

Cheers,

Niek.  redflag

Hey Niek, nice report! Congrats on logging the 736 and 738 with Sky interior. Next time your on the Avrojet, look at the overhead bins in the area below the wing, you can barely fit a laptop bag in there! It isn't an excuse for absent flight attendants though..

Nice report!

The baby Boeing looks fun! As does Norweigan, an airline on my 'to-do' list! I think I'll be avoiding Brussels Airlines though...

Great pictures too! Thoroughly enjoyed.

Hi photoshooter,

great little report here. Good idea to do such a fun day trip on three different airlines and three plane types through three countries. Nice pictures as well, like the snowy Swedish and Norwegian landscape.

Interesting to read that they had a BOB service on your Norwegian flight. I have once been on a domestic Swedish flight with them of about the same length and there was no service at all because of the short flight length. At least that's what they said.

And a shame about that bad experience on the SN flight. That attitude of the crew was really bad.

Greetings

Great TR again,

However I fail to believe how you always have bad experiences with SN crew. I probably fly them more than you do (as you hate em) and for now didn't have bad flights with them at all. Oh well, maybe I'm just in luck

Let's see, BRU-CPH-BRU / BRU-NCE / BRU-NCE / BRU-JFK-BRU / OSL-BRU. Yeah I guess I haven't flown that much with SN before... Unfortunately, not all bad experiences of them were based on personal matters but facts. As a fellow Belgian you should know they are way behind other carriers who represent their country... And that's a fact.

Also, when you have two different flights with two different airlines on the same day together with a SN flight, the dissimilarity is big. Perhaps you should do the same to see the difference by yourself?

Thanks all for your comments, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Cheers

Nice report. It reminds me of a recent Scandinavian adventure I had 2 weeks ago from BRU.

The emergency exit on the 736 looks weird with the staggered seating, then again I´m only used to the 738! I enjoyed me recent SK flights too, cant beat the free tea

Free wifi on DY looks awesome! But pretty crap they only accept credit cards...as BOB is a big money maker for LCCs I would have thought they´d be more flexible.

Pity about the SN crew. I agree with gabrielchew here, it´s not our job to lift, although they could have certainly helped the girl find a space. Or maybe they had to remain at the rear to observe the doors? I don´t know. But next time you´re too hot on the a/c, do tell the crew (ok I know these ones weren´t great) they should be able to do something about the temperature

Interesting report, thanks for sharing. I've only flown on SK, but have usually had good experiences with them. The airports in Scandinavia are always nice, and very easy for connections.

SK has never checked ID during boarding out of the many times I've flown them (always intra-Schengen). KL just recently stopped doing this too, even sending an email to frequent flyers indicating as such. LH never checks and even has automatic gates at some airports. I guess it doesn't really matter who flies as long as they pass security.

Niek, Great report as always accompanied wit a really entertaining set of photos.

The Norwegian Air Shuttle cabin looks great and I am amazed to see they offer free wifi; when you consider their fares.

The Brussels flight however looks terrible in comparison cabin wise (really dated) and the service sounds abysmal - it is bad to hear you had to go so long without being offered anything at all; especially considering the cabin temperature.

Thanks for sharing and I'll look forward to your next adventure.

Kev.

Nice that you catched the 737-600 at least, but I must say that my very first boeing flight was on a 737-600, sadly we dont have the same registration.

Boarding was completed, captain welcomed us and thanked us for choosing Brussels Airlines. Accidentally I replied with: ''Well, it is not that I have any choice, do I?'' The guy sitting next to me busted out laughing and admitted this was his only choice as well.

Gorgeous!

Hey Niek

Great trip report, thanks for sharing looks like you had a nice little daytrip.
We can agree about SK
Norweigan does not look bad at all, free wifi and sky interior! What more can a mankind want.
Too bad SN failed the test, would not be glad at all neither! Very slow service. Thankfully their longhaul is a bit better.
However, always nice to score an Avro even on a longer flight.

Greetings
Marc

Anybody knows which airport this is? Looks like a Ryanair Alternative for Oslo or Stockholm.

It's Kjeller. No commercial services there.

Hi Niek, thank you for this trip report.

Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):
I saw something blue, short and fat coming towards me.
Of course it was the SAS 736!

I'm somewhat fond of the 736. It's a cute little plane
Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):
Then the captain welcomed us, giving a lot of information regarding flight path, traffic and possible some heavy turbulence when climbing after take off from BRU. I never felt a bump so I guess we were lucky

Heavy turbulence on a 736 would be quite uncomfortable indeed. I guess you don't much like turbulence either?

Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):
Still on my 'to fly list'.

Likewise. Well, not necessarily Blue1, but I'd like to fly on a 717 one day.

Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):
Gorgeous cabin.

Indeed. The Sky Interior completely modernises the 737's cabin. I've yet to see one in the flesh, but it does look magnificent in photos.

Quoting photoshooter (Thread starter):
A minute later, I saw a girl struggling with her hand luggage since there was no room in the overhead compartments. Well then, that must have been the job of the stewardess in the back of the plane... Making sure everybody is comfortable and assisting when needed. But no, she was too busy gossiping and chatting with the trainee. So I decided to help her

Living your dream, I see

Thanks for sharing.

Nice report Niek! Look like you had a good day out. Shame SN were as bad as always....I really don't like them!

Thanks Gabriel! Good to see we agree! For me it isn't a surprise anymore but rather an expectation.

Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 9):
How can they offer this for free? I just don't understand. I need to get a flight with them soon. I think they're opening quite a few routes from LGW.

They opened a base in LGW! You should try them sometime..

Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 9):
Haha, very funny. Actually, FAs from quite a few airlines aren't allowed to lift passengers' bags. I know BA crew aren't meant to. Health and safety don't you know! Quite different from in Asia, where they help even on the no frills airlines.

Yeah I wasn't expecting them to lift all luggage but just search for a spot and help her instead of talking...

Quoting aerdingus (Reply 10):
Free wifi on DY looks awesome! But pretty crap they only accept credit cards...as BOB is a big money maker for LCCs I would have thought they´d be more flexible.

Indeed, I was a bit surprised by this as well. On short flights I can understand due to the fast service credit cards offer when it comes to payments. The flight was too short to enjoy a cup of coffee anyway!

Quoting aerdingus (Reply 10):
Pity about the SN crew. I agree with gabrielchew here, it´s not our job to lift, although they could have certainly helped the girl find a space.

Indeed, I agree as well. I wasn't expecting they would lift, I was expecting they would find a spot for the nice lady's hand luggage and assist if needed (which they failed to do).

Quoting rwsea (Reply 11):
The airports in Scandinavia are always nice, and very easy for connections

Indeed! Never had such a easy connection before...

Quoting rwsea (Reply 11):
SK has never checked ID during boarding out of the many times I've flown them (always intra-Schengen). KL just recently stopped doing this too, even sending an email to frequent flyers indicating as such. LH never checks and even has automatic gates at some airports. I guess it doesn't really matter who flies as long as they pass security.

Oh thanks for sharing this! I never knew that. So far for paying extra to change the name on the ticket, I guess...

Quoting flykev (Reply 12):
Niek, Great report as always accompanied wit a really entertaining set of photos.

Thanks Kevin! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Quoting flykev (Reply 12):
The Norwegian Air Shuttle cabin looks great and I am amazed to see they offer free wifi; when you consider their fares.

You should try them from LGW! They are totally worth it.

Quoting flykev (Reply 12):
it is bad to hear you had to go so long without being offered anything at all; especially considering the cabin temperature.

I refused to buy anything once they finally asked, I stayed polite though

Quoting Ideekay (Reply 13):

Would have been nice to logged the same aircraft! Which one did you log?

You forgot to add the entire crew was... A treat to look at  .

Quoting MSS658 (Reply 14):

Different crew... I was quite satisfied of the long haul crew, not as good as I expected but way better than the short haul.

Yes indeed, a real pleasure to fly with! The lavatory was very tiny though. Or I'm just getting fat...

Quoting CXB77L (Reply 16):

No turbulence at all!

Quoting CXB77L (Reply 16):

Qantas has 717s in service right? Can't be that hard!

Yes, I think I could stay longer in a 737 with the Sky Interior to be honest... If the seats were a bit more comfortable, I could easily fly over 5 hours with it!

Quoting CXB77L (Reply 16):
Living your dream, I see

Haha not the way I want and without a uniform but yes!

Thanks all for leaving a comment, I really appreciate it!

Cheers,

Niek B.
