Well a few weeks ago my aunt bought me two tickets to see some Braves games with her down in ATL and offered to pay for my ticket to fly down. So I could not pass up this free travel opportunity. So on July 17 I went to MEM for my MEM-ATL flight, scheduled to depart at 1250p.

On the way to the airport my phone rings, it's an automated voice telling me my MEM-ATL flight has been canceled.. great I think.. BUT WAIT .. DER's MORE!  Smile They've been NICE enough to rebook me. I will now be departing MEM at 108p for DTW! Yep.. MEM to ATL by way of DTW. I tell myself to relax and look on the bright side, I've been wanting to see DTW's new terminal and now I can.

So finally about twenty minutes late (I'm now convinced the departure times NWA says are the departure times are just "suggested times" for the pilots to pushback.) we left for DTW. The flight was uneventful and it seemed like we flew around forever until we landed in DTW and taxied about ten minutes to the terminal.

Now I know this has been discussed on here before but the new DTW terminal is very cool.. very European.. but it is TOO DAMN LONG! I had to walk forever just to get to the food then a long ass way back to my gate. I guess I could have taken the train but it seemed rather inconvenient in relation to my gate.

Anyways, about 500p local we pushbacked for ATL.. you guessed it.. twenty minutes late... once again the flight to ATL was quick and uneventful. Service on both these flights was lousy but at least I got some drinks..so anyways we landed in ATL and I caught a shuttle to my hotel near Turner Field and got to the Braves game just in time for the seventh inning stretch.

The next night I flew home after the afternoon Braves game. I was on a pretty tight time schedule.. I was to depart at 750p and arrive at 815p local and be at a rehearsal for a play I'm in at 845p.. however..this time we left almost AN HOUR late.. for what reason? No plane.. the damn plane was late.. some folks actually missed their connections to AMS from MEM.. that would have SERIOUSLY pissed me off..

You may ask.. what comps did I get? Just an "I'm sorry".. I just replied.. "Yea,I'll fly Delta next time."

Sounds like a case of Murphy's Law in action. I never fly on that tight of a schedule for that very reason. The funny thing is though that when you leave buffer time in your schedule for the unexpected you almost always end up not needing it.

My friend Colin said:

This can happen on ANY AIRLINE. Awww, they were late? Yeah, COMAIR axed my GRB flight with no explanation. They put me in a hotel, but I was mad they didn't tell me. Lousy Inflight Service? Your Delta offers the same service, snack mix and drinks. It's no different. And Delta offers their infamous "Fastbreak" product of lemonade or water on some flights. Be happy you got to ATL, I have seen some angry DL pax in MEM. Fly AirTran if you don't like NW or DL, after all, your fares are low on this route because of them. This situation can happen on FL. This is the airline industry, accept it. I got a free ticket for overbooking on a 45 minute flight GRB-DTW. I stayed an extra 4 hours, visited my sister more, and flew to L.A. a month later, courtesy of NWA. I have flown over 12 flights with them, ALL of them being great.

I am by no means a NW lover but, I hold them to a higher standard then DL, after numerous experiences on both. Missed the AMS flight, wow! I had a tight MCO-MEM-AMS connection over a month ago and am gonna have a semi tight one in AMS-MIA-MCO in about a week. If that were me I would be extremly pissed!

From my experience NW takes care of their pax much more than DL. I have had canceled flights on DL and let me just say that DL did not call nor let anyone know, even though they would have known about it 10 hours in advance! This was a FRA-JFK flight! We got to the airport and the first question they asked me, a Busness Elite customer at the check in counter was "Where is your final destination with DL today?" All the while the agent had my ticket in her hand and was staring at it while waiting for an answer from me! I left 6 hours later on United after I walked over to the UA counter and told them DL canceled my flight!

NW is not the best but every airline has their hick ups. Be happy they took care of you in advance!

Well I got the impression they were doing me a favor by rebooking for me.. some of the other poor people who didn't get to the airport 2 hours early like I did were on stand-by on the MEM-DTW flight.. also NWA canceled the MEM-EWR flight that day as well.. at least it wasn't AS out of the way as MEM-DTW-ATL...

Also, it has been a while since I've flown Delta and do not remember that bad of service.. but you guys I'm sure have flown them recently and know... apologies...

Nice report, I've been on Delta last November and I thought they were much better than Northwest. Delta was on-time, the Atlanta hub was nice, and the 767s and the 737-800 had in-flight entertainment unlike Northwest who doesn't have any in domestic flights. Also noticed that Delta flies 727-200s to Memphis, that would've been nice. I just flew on NW last week from Japan and the transpac service was pretty bad and the domestic service was mediocre, at least they were mostly on time but there are airlines with good ontime records and with better service.

I really don't find Northwest any worse than any other U.S. airline. Every airline has there problems, if you quit flying an airline based on one bad experience then you'd have none to fly on. Every airline has places were they can improve. Yes, even I, a MAJOR Northwest fan, can see that they have places were they can improve. I hope that your next flight, whatever airline it is, is better than this one.

Northwest Guy,

I do not mean to be starting another "NW Sucks" argument here. But why are there relatively more complaints about NW than any other major US carrier? So far, I have had numerous trips on AA, UA, HP and of course, NW. US carriers being US carriers, the service was at best, ok. Until I flew NW. They gave in-flight service a whole new meaning.

The above trip report was, very aptly put, Murphy's Law at work. So we should probably cut the airline some slack here.

Cheers
Ryan

ps: Please, I do not want to start a war here. I mean no harm.

What reason was it cancelled? That may shed some light.

I flew AA PHL-DFW-SJC-ORD-PHL in March 2001, and I had a cancelled flight, 2 delayed flights, a missed flight, and a rebooked flight at 6:00a instead of 8a! According to you I should hate AA as much as BR does right now.

Of course this whole scenario could happen on any major US carrier...but from both my experiences on DL and NW I would suggest you try DL again for your next trip. Although I have flown DL tons of times with no really bad experiences, my friend who flew on two flights in which he had complaints found quick and easy compensation when he called DL afterwards. btw-flying Asian carriers will make you sick when you get back on the US Carriers  Big grin

Ryanair!!!,

Regarding the fact there are more NW complaints than any other was not always the case. If U are familiar with UA's "Summer of Horror," you will know what I am talking about. UA remains my favorite US airline, but I have had my share of bad flights. The summer of 2000 was filled with pilots slow downs, bad weather, and many aircraft problems. I was stuck in ORD and IAD on two seperate occasions that summer. That year UA had the most complaints compared to any other US major except HP! U know I am not a NW lover, I'm just saying that NW has not always been at the bottom. Other airlines have had their share at the spotlight. It seems to be NW's turn now. And remember CO was in this position in 1994. Look where they are now with new management? I think NW could follow the same path as CO if the new management try.

One thing I would like to point out is we normally discuss NW's inflight service problems. Skyhigh2002 really didn't complain about the service, he complained about canceled flights and punctuality. Something I have never had a problem with on NW!

FutureSQPilot,
Flying Asian carriers is the way to go! U are so right. Once ur on them, U never want to board an American carrier again!

I fly usually about 5-6 times a year, mostly on NW. However, i have flown AA, DL, and CO and I must say that I have had much less problems per flight on NW than both AA and DL. CO was very good. DL was by far the worst on all flights i have taken with them. Mainly because of rude staff, but also dirty aircraft and delays, though you can't really hold the airline accountable for the delay part most of the time. AA was decent but still had many flaws similar to DL. I'm not saying NW is perfect, they have their share too and at times I hate flying it, but out of all the flights I have taken with them I have had relatively few problems. Seems that people here are just more prone to getting a bad flight  Smile

It was free for him, but someone had to pay for it. It was surprising to me that they were late, usually Northwest's consistent on-time peformance was one of the only things going for them, IMHO. If they are consistently late now then I'd definitely fly someone else. It appears the author of this trip report has not had good experiences with them...Why fly someone who is always bad...you should go try someone else and see if they're better. Like I said, I think Delta's much better, but I'm trying them again tomorrow and I'll tell you the verdict.

Just back from a quick NW trip and it was good as usual. Friendly FA's, ontime flights, luggage made it etc etc , all the things I expect from NW.

I have experienced every major carrier in the US and they are all pretty much alike when it comes to good days and bad days, good years and bad years etc.

NW is definatley in a "good" time with the new DTW hub, a new plane every 2 weeks (saw the 757-300 in DTW WOOOOOOOW), good performance etc etc, now if only they would start making money again and maybe add some IFE on domestic flights.  Smile Oh well, we can't have it all.
