Service AF 1709 operated by Air France
Scheduled: 13.20 // 14.40
These airfare calculations surprised me once again.
Flights to Asia and especially a bit further than the usual places like BKK or SIN, are very expensive ex Germany during the winter break vacation time.
To fly out of Paris is much cheaper this way.
How to reach Paris in time for my long haul leg?.
Ok, ok, there is no competition beside the train service
ex STR and therefore a ticket on AF is swiftly booked.
But wait, fly AF and secured the ticket by Flugladen.de,
there are some vouchers registered to calm the fare down.
Leg 1 and 6 around this trip are on the first confirmation.
45.00 Euro´s only per leg, real good from my point of view.
Well, the AF guy´s also noticed that there is no real need for the Saturday afternoon service and cancelled my originally scheduled 4.00 pm departure short thereafter.
Good or not, the 1.20 pm service is offered with no real other options.
That means much more connecting time in Paris, what is ok with the winter weather conditions and the flights booked on separate tickets. But also might be a little less interesting with CDG not the top notch public side airport.
Well, we will see.
Out of the homebase at 11.15 am, really?.
This is definitely not my standard time and it feels a bit surrealistic to me. But anyway also this time the car found the way for P0, OLCI works well in advance and soon thereafter I´am at the airport for a first view to the screen.
Gate 316 is not the standard AF one
Yes, winter is still here.
Lot´s of snow along the night, the first inbound ex Paris is more than two hours late but my flight looks like ok.
Leaving my bag at the Sky Priority counter is a quick affair, simply no one in front at T1 security and onwards for a shorty lounge stop.
Well you know, just to pick up some of these delicious AF cookies, well needed for every travel around the world!.
So, what´s up at the gate?
F-GUGF, let me check the destinations and planes file.
Is this really a new A318 like on schedule?.
It is!. New to the log and leg no. 18 on type
This one is in the air since 02.04.2004 with AF only.
18 examples are in the actual fleet
Not that much pax around the gate till a last view for the restroom facilities, like always with me prior to boarding a plane.
Boarding is good on the way when I´am back and where are all these people coming from?. Much more than expected.
Well, someone out there for the late boarding rule?.
It works once again.
21D/E/F is open for me. It seems there is someone checked-in but not showing up.
The load is 90%, no biz suits to see, also not in biz!.
3 partly cloudy degrees, 1.20 pm is a perfectly ontime departure from "Two-Five". 1 hour, 05 minutes for
"AirFrance" and me on the well known route to CDG.
The legroom is not that impressive here
Cabin crew is one middle aged male FA, one elder female, also nice and another middle aged french woman, black hair, not that really slim, but really nice!.
Inde, well, not till now
Cockpit crew is from France, the captain with a nice welcome, the crew is introduced by name. He´s later once more on the mike short prior to descent.
No route or flightlevel info.
Consignes de Securite
What about a view to the cabin with the dark blue clean so far fabric seats?
Looks like cold down there
Service a la francaise
Touchdown at the 2700 meters "Zero-Nine-Left". 2.30 pm, 10 minutes ahead to schedule. Zero cloudy degrees and arrival at T2F like it is usually today.
Some 20 minutes to wait for the bag and always interesting to see the few pax only at the belt. Lot´s of connecting flights for the STR people, so it seems also today.
Priority works, it´s the first one out and onwards for the trek to T2A.
Service CX 278 operated by Cathay Pacific
Scheduled: 20.00 // 15.10
Well, it feels a little bit awkward here.
My flight is ontime on the screen
Departure 8.00 pm, it´s 02.30 pm now, freezing cold outside and also inside, at least from my point of view.
Some clochards downing another megabottle of the cheapest red in terminal 2C, remarkable the smell of urine, employees walking by, nobody cares.
Less people only around this Saturday afternoon and the counters should open 3 hours prior to departure.
Well, I found a comparative comfortable seat between T2C and A, watching the few people walking by and dreaming away for some mental preparations around my destination. The Philippines here I come!.
But hey, when I´am doing this right now, what should I do on the plane later on?.
Lucky me, around 4.00 pm I´ve decided to have a view for the counters and just to my surprise there is a Northafrican style woman around with an Cathay uniform doing some preparations.
I´ve asked and she decided that it´s worth it for a Oneworld Sapphire client like me, to printout my boarding papers and accept my bag.
Well done here.
The seat selection mode doesn´t work online but CX´s FRA office swiftly found a solution for me.
Legs 2 till 5 are on the second confirmation,
190.00 Euro´s per leg this way managed by french ticketdealer Govolo.
Close to no time to wait at passport check, also at security and well timed in CDG´s terminal 2A gate area.
Just for a first view like this
Now that´s absolutely top notch terminal design, at least from a CDG lover point´s of view.
Don´t talk about my sarcasmic sense!
This one for me, please
With the typical smalish engines
The sunny gate A39
Well, time enough for a view to Le Salon Cathay Pacific
With just me and a couple of employees around
This is a large, well designed place
With superb apron views
Count the open chairs
Well done offers, hot and cold varieties
And also something for me
This one is a couple of hours delayed today
And this one is towed for the gate
Etihad with the larger engines
Heading slowly for the gate where there is another lounge to visit
Ok, but the CX place suits me better
Comfy seaters
Boarding now for Asia´s World City or better said
B-HXA, the scheduled A343
Leg no. 7 on type, new to the log.
In the air with CX since 27.06.1996. 10 examples are in the actual fleet and this is the second oldest one.
Late boarding, you know, there is an elder chinese woman in my seat, the last row window 70K, of course
and I´ve decided to offer her generously the free aisle seat in the last center row. Sure better with two seats for me now!.
The legroom is ok this way
Leaving the gate at 8.00 pm, ontime, "Cathay" on the go for the 11 hours, 15 minutes eastbound ride.
It´s partly cloudy here with -2 degrees, shudder.
De-icing is needed and takes ages prior to departure from the 4200 meters "Zero-Nine-Right".
The captain is from the UK, the FO from Australia, so it seems. A nice and detailed welcome from the front office after boarding is completed.
A view to the somewhat oldfashioned looking really well used cabin fitted with mixed blue green fabric seats
For your safety, sure
The load is very close to 100%, not that much open seats to spot and lots of chinese people on travel today/night.
Looks like interesting here
Also a menu card is handed out
Proudly presented by CX: The offers today
Service at my seat is done by a nice young chinese woman, really personal and attentive work here.
What about the IFE
This way
A shorty snack to follow.
What I´ve completely dislike by CX is no bottled water available. Water is served from a large pot and smells somewhat chemistry like.
I finally switched to Schweppes Soda by can, my second choice beside natural water
And just by surprise I´ve ended up again with this feature
A short night only, so let´s have something to eat now
This is the vegetarian option and don´t get me wrong, I´am usualy not the "clean up the tray" guy, but this meal is so delicious, Risotto Duo with tomato rice, grilled vegetables italian style and pea rice is really to my gusto
With the stomach filled I´ve decided quickly to have a view for the action in dreamland from where I´ve only come back shortly above northern China
Russia catches some money again
The routing at all is LUX-FRA-BER-MOW-Astana- Urumqi-Lanzhou-Chongking at maximum 37000 feet.
My seat, oldfashioned, isn´t it?
The cabin in daylight
And some chinese mountains
Ah, here it is, Hongkong ahead
Interesting places on the map
A few clouds only
Breakfast, dinner, lunch or who knows
Just to show you what I not like this time
The captain is on the mike with a short bye-bye later, not that long to go now.
An cloudy approach for HKG´s 3800 meters "Zero-Seven-Left"
Really low clouds here
Arrived, 16 degrees and fog.
8.35 am in Germany, 3.35 pm local and this is 25 minutes late.
Bye now for B-HXA
One more flight to go till the final destination today.
And what about one more lounge?.
Well, we will see!.
Service CX 903 operated by Cathay Pacific
Scheduled: 16.40 // 18.45
My connection time is relatively short and with the delay also shortened again.
Onward flights are shown on the screens during approach and it´s also mentioned that pax with short connections are welcomed at the gate.
These pax are guided to a special security lane.
Well, not me and all the others, we should go to transfer security now, what is a painfully slow process.
It seems the pax had no idea that there is another security check necessary for the next flight.
Bottles, wallets, other stuff, simply everything what you don´t like to see in such situations.
Finally through and with HKG not the tiny place a quick walk for the gate is definitely necessary right now.
For the gate?
Ah, ok, 25 for me and finally no chance to hit the lounge this time
A recent scheduled equipment change for this service
is noticed during my checks at the homebase.
Originally booked on the A343, changed for the 772, but this one at the gate is definitely not the one and also not the other
B-HLV is an A333, new to the log and leg no. 7 on type
In the air and around with CX since 26.09.2003.
37 planes on type are in the fleet
And this flight is packed, late boarding doesn´t help.
Very few Europeans only and
an middle aged Filipino guy in the aisle seat.
The last row of course, 70K, sounds somewhat well known to me.
For your safety, ok
5.00 pm, 20 minutes late, "Cathay" on the run, 1 hour, 40 minutes only for the Philippines. Departure from the 3800 meters "Zero-Seven-Right".
16 foggy degrees here.
Less legroom with the really well used oldfashioned, mixed green blue fabric seats
The captain is on the mike after boarding is completed with a short welcome, sounds like from the UK, also the FO´s name is European.
A view for the cabin
Leaving HKG with a view to the large apartment houses along the flightpath, in theory
Just to emerge from the clouds again
Taipei sounds well known to me
The route is completely over water at a maximum of 37000 feet.
Close to Manila. The FO is on the mike shortly announcing decent
But wait, also this leg is a full service leg.
Served by a middle aged ok style chinese woman
The scratched window in the dawn
Touchdown at the 3737 meters runway "Zero-Six", 7.00 pm local, this is 15 minutes late.
And hey, what´s the weather here?.
27 degrees, clear sky, definitely the place to be for me.
Arrival cards are handed out inflight, it´s the visa on arrival way.
Simply no time to wait at immigration, the young officer is a relaxed guy, just a question about my intention and a stamp later I´am on the Philippines for the very first time.
A couple of bank counters are open to catch some Pesos without a minute to wait.
Priority works, my bag is swiftly on the belt, no time to wait at customs and out in the public.
Due to terrible stories with the taxi rip off crowd here I´ve managed with the hotels reservations desk to pick me up, the fare is agreed with 900 Pesos.
Well, in theory, there is no one to be seen outdoor.
A middle aged police officer walked around, asked the lonely travellers about their intention and send them in several directions. He recommended that I should ask at the other side of the road where there is a hotel shuttle waiting room for my transportation.
Done, a nice young guy there, he called the hotel and told me that due to the chinese new year events taking place right now during the weekend and my hotel is located in the very middle of Chinatown, it wasn´t possible for the van to leave the hotel´s car park.
He offered me a ride on a shared van for another hotel but that will take some time to wait till the other pax arrived.
No, my book told me about the licensed airport taxi company running on the meter, that´s the way to go now for me.
The driver does a good job, he called his main office and asked for the best way to reach my hotel as close as possible. Lot´s of detours later, running by dark streets where you even don´t believe that these are streets to drive through, we are there, some 300 Pesos more expensive but finally there. Just around the corner from the Ramada Manila Central, the only international hotel in Binondo, Chinatown, Manila.
A high floor was requested and granted, level 12 for me now
The bathroom
Nicely designed here
Well, Manila, one of the most polluted megacities around the world and also a place where there is a massive difference between the few rich and the millions of poor people. So a closer look at you´re surroundings is recommendable here.
The festivities going on outdoor, simply leave your valuables in the hotel room safe and join the party.
Just a couple of meters away is located in a backyard the Cheap Chinese Superstore, believe it or not, that was the name, where I´ve found something to drink for the night and yes, it was cheap!.
And also in Manila´s Chinatown there is a McD only some 100 meters away.
Good for a coke and some fries.
Have you ever been to a place where kids, let me say between six and ten years old, are standing at the exit and try to eat what the customers left on the tablet´s?.
Also inside there are some even younger kids, they eat from the leftover on the tables till the security guy noticed it and pushed them away.
The street is the living room here in Chinatown, lot´s of people sleeping in corners, begging for money and else.
I´am not sure if this is special during the event or simply the standard here.
This is a road where the typical Manila public transport lines up for new passengers, Jeepneys at night
A wet market in Chinatown where you can buy anything what you know or not and where there are a thousand of people around, imagine the odor, no westerners at all to see
And yes, it´s dirty here
The "Gift of God", ok, well needed here
It´s close to midnight now, there are some pictures to do tomorrow and the streets calming slowly down.
Time to hurry back to the hotel immediatelly now.
WLAN is free, but works only acceptable in the hotels lobby, so time to catch some well worth sleep.
Here are the conclusions with the first three legs:
1.)Air France Stuttgart-Paris/CDG: Calm and relaxed.
2.)Cathay Pacific Paris/CDG-Hongkong: As comfy as it should be in eco.
3.)Cathay Pacific Hongkong-Manila: Packed, short and calm.
More pics and more flights to come soon.
What about this way:
But, at least as nothing goes wrong, there is another long haul ride in between!.
Paalam na po,
comments welcome,

Hi Markus,
Great report once again! Seems like CX did a pretty good job on the Paris-Hong Kong leg. I would love to fly the A343 one day, it's sadly still missing from my log.
Btw, I flew B-HLV myself from Bangkok to Delhi last April.

Hi Markus!
Good story about your eastbound adventure. CX doesn't look bad at all, would love to fly them some day. The A343 is a nice machine to fly, despite its 4 small engines.

Hi Markus,
another very nice report here, and good to see you on more longhaul flights. Looks like your new-airport-rule makes it difficult for you to find interesting trips within Europe anymore ...
Anyway a good flight with Cathay it seems. Food and service looked quite good. But indeed strange with the water service, never seen anything like this, would definitely prefer bottled water as well.
And some interesting pictures of Manila, hope you also have some daylight views to share with us ...

Hey Markus,
Nice story as always. Seems CX is decent enough economy, nothing special, but just what you would expect to Asia nowadays. Looking forward to the return part, as always!
Probably a wiser move as you were booked on a separate ticket.
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 1): Some clochards downing another megabottle of the cheapest red in terminal 2C, remarkable the smell of urine, employees walking by, nobody cares.
Unbelievable! You did not expect to see something like that on an EU airport!
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 1): The seat selection mode doesn´t work online
Strange! I did not encounter any problem. Was it because of arrangement with GOVOLO as travel agent?

Markus, really good to get the memory back after reading your CX report. I had 8 longhaul flights on them in 2012, all perfectly in order and great service in Y. No real big issues with this airline.
Interesting to see some pics from Manila also, I like these places a lot, but it seems this is a class apart compared to some places I've been to. I might put this place on my list for a future visit.

Hello there!
How did you find the seat comfort with the fixed-shell seat? I am 188cm in height, so I am always unsure whether or not to fly CX LAXHKG or just stick with my usual KE via ICN?? Thoughts?
Great trip reports as usual, btw!!! Thank you for your continued contributions over the years!
And another question, when arriving in Stuttgart, how are the train options here versus FRA, for example?

Hello Markus,
Nice report. Looks like you had a nice journey onboard CX. They don’t seem to have the most recent and modern cabin but the service level is really good. The HKG-MNL seems to be a ‘regional’ cabin config, quite the difference with the longhaul ones. I noticed that too on my set of CX flights some years ago to and from Vietnam.

How did you find the seat comfort with the fixed-shell seat? I am 188cm in height, so I am always unsure whether or not to fly CX LAXHKG or just stick with my usual KE via ICN?? Thoughts?
186 cm here and not really pleased with these shell seats. Ok with the open seat beside, not good with a full house.
Quoting AirAfreak (Reply 17): And another question, when arriving in Stuttgart, how are the train options here versus FRA, for example?
FRA is much better connected by train. STR is a more than 30 minutes sub ride for the main train station.

Thank you for great report. Manila looks like very interesting place to visit, hopfully one day.
Thank you.

Thank you and also my impression.

You’re too good of a person The perfect way to secure some extra legroom.
Lucky me, here!.
Quoting sultanils (Reply 19):
The ‘sliding down iso recline’ seats I see?
Quoting sultanils (Reply 19):
It would certainly have been something for my taste. As long as there’s no sea-beasts involved
Sure ok with me but not really when served as a breakfast.

Thanks for your latest installment, you’re writing them really fast at the moment!
Thank you.
Quoting infodesk (Reply 20): CX seem perfectly acceptable. Shame you had such a long time to kill at CDG, must have been a bit annoying, but better that way than the other.
Good job you made the connection in HKG, your short weekend would have been even shorter otherwise!
CX was for sure ok and the perfect point with CDG.
Quoting infodesk (Reply 20):
As for Manila, I’m not sure it would be for me. All the poverty and dirt and litter, very sad to see.
For sure a special place.
Quoting infodesk (Reply 20):
You are lucky with those A318 on the STR run. I haven’t managed to log one single one yet with AF.
Lucky me, definitely.
Quoting infodesk (Reply 20):
We got some of those grissini on the PUF-LCY flight only pesto flavour. Very good they were too.

interesting report, CX's product looks fine as usual. Too bad you didn't get the 772, would have been a really old one.
Thank you and sure the point here with the lost 772.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 22):
Did you choose the A343 twice on purpose? No 744 leg possible?
