Hello all and welcome to my first report of 2013   It has been a long time since I have posted one due to lots of changes in my life ( all positive ) and lots of travelling. Basically I have had little time to actually write my reports but now intend to clear a rather large back log.

Gareth and myself had for a long time been talking about taking a trip on Cunard's Queen Mary 2 across the Atlantic. For our regular November trip we wanted something special and so we decided we would aim to book a passage on this ocean liner. We have both been on numerous cruise lines but this was to be very different. We came to the point where we found the accomodation we wanted and decided to book. The cost was around GBP1000 each which was what we had allowed for. I had booked a month off work so for me it was going to be the start of a lovely break.

After many months of waiting the day finally came. Gareth and I had been booked on the BMI flights but lots of time changes and flight number changes later we finally ended up with BA from DUB in Club Europe. This was going to be interesting for us as it was going to be our first experience of BA and CE back in Dublin. Previously I had been on BA operated by BMI during the transition.

We both decided that due to the very early departure time we would book into the Radisson Blu Dublin Airport. After checking in and an interesting Skype chat with Gareth's parents we decided to get some sleep.

The alarm went off way too soon as is always the case and we got ready and checked out of the hotel.

We made our way to Terminal 1 and checked in at the Club Europe desk.

Then it was a quick visit to the now closed BA Business Lounge ( former BMI DC Lounge ) .

We were greeted by two friendly crew and we took our seats in the refurbed BA cabin. Still you can see the BMI brown curtains.

Soon the doors were closed and we made our way to the runway. Take off was quick and soon the crew were released for the cabin service.

Gareth and I ordered some Champagne to celebrate the start of our holiday.

Shortly breakfast arrived

This was nice but not as nice as I remember when they used to fly DUB-LGW.

After no time at all it was time to land. The crew came around to collect the meal trays and empty glasses.
One of them noticed I had only drunk half of the bottle and was going to pour it into my glass. I said I had
drunk enough but she smiled and said ''think of the enviroment, I cant dump it''. Gareth and I laughed and
she poured it in. I quickly drank it before she took away the empties.

We disembarked and thanked the crew for a pleasant flight. They had asked if we were doing something nice so when we told them they said they were envious and always wanted to take that trip too. They wished us a fantastic time.

Soon we arrived at Soton and we saw our ship that would take us across the Atlantic. We were very excited at this

After a delayed check in process due to their computers going off line we finally were able to board.

Rolf Harris was guest speaker on this voyage so it would certainly be interesting as we found out later.

We were greeted by friendly staff who all looked very smart in their uniforms.

Next on our to do list was to get our Spa passes for the week. As we would have so many days at sea we decided we would use the Spa everyday. For USD95 each it was well worth it.

All ages were catered for young and old. The average age was around 40-50 which suited us fine. We did not
want to be stuck with screaming kids or party party teenagers. The mix was very nice with 90% of the people on board
very interesting and well educated. They were like us there for the experience and this certainly was not a cruise it was
a voyage.

I am so glad I did not waste my time and money on a mini cruise on this ship. I think it would have ruined it for me. Cunard do 4-5 night mini cruises from Southampton but as much as I was tempted I thought I would wait and do it
properly. I am so glad I did and Im sure Gareth is too. The departure and arrival points were a big part of the trip.

The days at sea went quite fast. Gareth and I usually went for breakfast then mid morning coffee at the lovely
Sir Samuel's. Then a nice walk on deck weather permitting and a trip to the spa. We rotated lunch at various
venues and all of the options were great.

On one of the days we hit rough seas. It was not too bad but certainly reassured me that we were on a liner built
for this weather than a cruise ship. The Captain kept us all informed in his daily broadcast about the ships location
and weather along with some very interesting technical information about the ship. A fact of the day was always fun
with my favourite being where the saying ''swinging the lead'' came from.

On old sailing boats, depth was measured in fathoms; a fathom being 6 feet. In order to ascertain this, a rope, knotted at 6 foot intervals, was thrown into the water and the thrower would feel when it hit the bottom and count the fathom marks as he pulled it back up. In order to compensate for the forward movement of the boat, this rope had to be thrown forward and it had a lead weight on it to take it down to the bottom. The swinging of this lead was seen as a very easy job on ship and hence someone who chooses the easy option is seen as "swinging the lead".

The day had come for us to see Rolf Harris. I have to say I had my doubts as to whether I would enjoy it but
I was so amazed at how much I had forgotten about his work and his famous songs. It really was a trip down
memory lane and reminded me of my childhood. Rolf Harris is a true gentleman also and always had time for
everyone during his time on the ship.

The Kings Court self service buffet served dinner and late evening snacks. I have to say I was not a fan
and felt there could have been more on offer and better quality. Still we managed to always find something.
Compared to the rest of the ship it was not in keeping with the other standard of food options.

The one thing Gareth and I commented on during our voyage was the amount of deck space. It was really the best
I have ever seen at sea. So many areas outside to explore and relax. It made for a lovely change from the cruise ships.

Our table for two at dinner. We met a lovely couple from Scotland and we had many laughs with them as they
were sat at the table next to us. They were sailing back to back which would have been a very nice trip to do.

The final night had arrived and it was time to leave our luggage outside our staterooms and get some sleep.
We would be passing under the bridge at 4am so we had to get up as this would be a once in a lifetime thing to
see. The ship would be very close to the bridge as it passed under.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/QM21/file_zpse1b45b4f.jpg

We got up and wrapped up very well. It was icy cold and windy but soon we saw America in the distance. It was
an exciting moment.

Soon we were closing in on the bridge and we were about to pass under it.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/QM21/file_zps3dc6c991.jpg

Everyone was impressed as we passed under it was well worth getting up for.

Soon another highlight was to come . The iconic Statue of Liberty. It was quite amazing to see this as we entered
New York. It is something I have heard many talk about but there was something really special about sailing from England to America and after a week seeing this as you sail in . Its not the same as flying and then visiting which
I have done so many times. This was unique. This was an end of a voyage that many before us had taken and some
who sadly did not make it.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/QM21/file_zps27de4021.jpg

No sooner had we taken in the Statue of Liberty then another amazing view came into focus. It really
was hard to sink in that we were sailing into New York. Due to the hurricane a few weeks prior we had
switched ports but this was to our advantage as we sailed right into Manhattan.

After all the excitement it was time to head back to get some sleep for a few hours.

We then got up had breakfast and got ready to clear US Immigration which was done on board.
No real questions and my passport was stamped. This is the view we had from the ship.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/QM21/file_zpsd919c844.jpg

So soon after it was time to disembark the Queen Mary 2 and take one final photo.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/QM21/file_zpse58bd908.jpg

It had been an amazing voyage and experience. Something I would love to do one day again. Sailing across the
Atlantic is something really special and I would recommend it to anyone.

I hope you all enjoyed this report. I know its rather long but for me it was hard to remove more pics than I did

I appreciate your comments and feedback as always and look forward to getting back to writing my back log of reports.

Kind regards

OA260/Philip

Are meals/entertainment etc included in the price?

Hi many thanks for your reply. This TR took so much work and time so Im really glad you enjoyed it.

Yes all meals and entertainment are included. There are some things you pay for such a Todd English speciality restaurant but all the main dining areas are included. Basically we only paid for Spa / Drinks and Internet access. Everything was in USD$$ so it made it cheaper for UK/EU passengers.

You should definately go . Just a tipp there can be some great late deals in Winter season booking 7-10 days before. We could not wait that close and needed to book well in advance.

Hey Philip,

Thanks for taking the time to document our amazing trip across the Atlantic on QM2. It was a truly amazing trip and one I will definitely be repeating. She is a magnificent ship and the experience was out of this world. I can highly recommend this trip to anyone who is even remotely tempted. Seeing it all again has made me very nostalgic!

Looking forward to reading the next installment and to our next trip wherever that may be.

Awesome report, Phil! What a trip.

I've always wondered what it's like to take the QM2 across the Ocean, and your amazing picture collection made me feel like I was traveling along with you. Did you fly back, or go back across by boat?

Thanks for sharing it with us!

Hello Philip

Always nice to spend a lot of time reading tour reports, and this one is the best, as usual a lot of great photos, attention to details and made me feel like i was taking that trip with you.

I don't know about you but i am sure that i added an inch or so to my waist just looking at all that nice food pictures.

One thing i did while reading your report is to look for those Cunard bathrobes on the net, no luck so far.

Well i am happy that the changes in your life are all positive.

Thank you again.

Question, do you have to dress up for meals? My partner and I like to dress casually (eg. no suits and ties). Will we be out of place on a ship like this?
