Flt: United Airlines 124
It's Thursday night, 8:00PM. My bags are pretty much packed and I'm ready to roll. We have a friend who does shuttle service to and from various airports in Southern California, and he picked me up at 8 for my 11:20PM flight on United 124 to ORD. I'm was going to DTW for the weekend to visit some family because my own family is out of town for 3 weeks. I got really bored and my parents told me to go to Detroit. So anyways, I get to the airport at 8:30. I did curbside check-in (no line). I get inside the airport and I see a security line a mile long. Then, this lady behind me asks, "is this SECURITY?!" I said..."yeah, sure is.." Then, a minute later, this security guy comes up to us and says real quietly, "they just opened up a security line upstairs, no line yet." We all broke out into a frantic run. We got upstairs, and this is when I saw how easy it was for the Sept. 11 attacks to take place.
I get upstairs, and I see a group of goofy security agents. I put my bag on the X-Ray machine, pulled out a plastic bucket and put my cell phone and my wallet in it, and placed it on the X-Ray belt. I looked at the lady who's supposed to be looking at it, and what do I see? Her head is turned around looking into space. Her eyes were not on the monitor. They were pretty much fooling around, I got through and I was sure I heard a beep, but the guy just told me to move along. I was stunned. I picked up my bags and left the security area. I went to my gate with 2.5 hours to spare. The plane hadn't even arrived from Australia yet. I think it was Australia, not positive though. Anyways, after roaming around and looking out the window, I boarded my plane. Another more pleasant surprise though.
I bought my ticket through travelocity (which is awesome by the way) because this was a last minute trip decision. I bought a coach ticket. I went to customer service to do super early check in so I could get a window seat. She said they will call me up at the gate and she gave me some document. I waited for about 30 minutes and the plane arrived. They had a huuuuge line. They called my name up to the desk 5 minutes later, and I went up there and she gave me a boarding pass...business class. I was confused. I just took it and said thanks. I was a premier member with United, along with my parents and sister. I recently lost that status after I stopped traveling international so often. I bought the ticket, however, with our credit card, which is a United miles card, and it had my mom or dad's name on it, and they still have full blown premier status. Is this why I got upgraded? Because I bought a full fare ticket? I'm still not sure.
Anyways, I got into the plane, and settled down next to a guy who was drinking alcohol the entire way. It smelled like shit the most of the 3.7 or so hours to ORD because of the alcohol. I plugged in the headset and tuned channel 9 and listened to ATC the entire way, even though it was a night flight. Our take-off roll was long, smooth, and we didn't get sucked into our seats like normal. Very very smooth. We lifted off, and I sat back and listened to ATC the entire way. We landed on Runway 9L or R in ORD, I don't remember exactly which. Our landing was great. It was very very smooth, I didn't feel much at all, we were skimming the surface for some time before touching down, and it was amazingly smooth. We taxied and parked at the terminal. I got off, bade farewell to our aircraft, and headed to the A320 to take me to DTW. Got on the plane, this time in the rear of it. Listened to ATC, again, had some snack mix, fell asleep for 15 minutes, got up over Lake Michigan, and into a cloudy approach into DTW. Landing, again pretty nice, not as nice as the 744. Parked at the gate, I got off into DTW's old terminal, and left the airport.
Trip back home to come shortly if you guys want me to post it. Interesting thing though, from DTW-ORD, a female captain and male FO. Never seen that before.
hope you guys enjoyed this,
