Hello All and welcome to the return portion of my Winter USA Flight-Voyage-Flight trip. After a wonderful 7 days at sea sampling the Cunard White Star Service it was time to hit terra ferma  British Airways Club And Cunard's Queen Mary 2 TA (by OA260 Feb 26 2013 in Trip Reports)

Gareth and I had pre booked a private transfer to the hotel of our choice which was the Courtyard By
Marriott Newark Elizabeth. It was chosen for two specific reasons. Firstly I wanted a location next to a
shopping mall and secondly we wanted to be near the Airport for our departure the next day.

Our driver arrived at the cruise terminal as we disembarked the QM2 :

Everyone is heading East these days :

After a short time we arrived at our hotel :

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/USENVOY/file_zps0c163d9c.jpg

Pretty decent sized room and certainly ok for us.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/USENVOY/file_zpseea8d3aa.jpg

No sooner had we dropped our bags it was time for some serious retail therapy   Well for me anyway.
Gareth had no interest in shopping which was good for me as he had agreed to let me have his customs
allowance

Leaving the hotel it was bitterly cold and snowing.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/USENVOY/file_zps3b9463bd.jpg

Time to hit the shops.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/USENVOY/file_zpsaf5aa4ca.jpg

Always a haven for me so I got down to getting all the things I wanted. I also spotted a lovely grey
heavy jacket that is normally EUR200 in Ireland and I got the last one for USD79 !

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/USENVOY/file_zps2a6ddeb1.jpg

Back out to the cold to head to the hotel to drop some more bags .  http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/USENVOY/file_zpsdb1aff86.jpg

After two trips to the shopping mall I had not been able to get the cookware set I had set my heart on.
Some phone calls to other Malls and I found it at another one half an hour away. Gareth kindly agreed
to come with me so we ordered a cab from the hotels reception. This was actually a mistake as we got
ripped off. The guy charged us $70 but when we came back with a local driver it was half that. Still not
knowing any different we could not do anything. Still I did not let it annoy me too much as I saved a fortune
on the cookware set.

All this shopping was hungry work so we went to Wendy's .

Later some Chinese and the lovely Orange Chicken which I only ever seem to be able to get in the USA.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/USENVOY/file_zps7335fcfa.jpg

Later that night it was time to try pack everything. That was the fun part.  http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/USENVOY/file_zpsff080893.jpg

After a while it was time to head to bed as we would be up early the next morning.

We woke up the next morning and some nice views out of the hotels window.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/USENVOY/file_zps6002fbd9.jpg

We checked out of the hotel and got our bags onto the shuttle bus and made our way to the Airport.

We checked in and the check in agent commented to Gareth at how nice the cookware set was and
proceeded to put lots of fragile stickers on it

We wanted to use the UA lounge so we were given a gate pass as there was no lounge in the area
where our US Airways flight was departing.

Our aircraft waiting to take us to CLT. Gareth decided he was hungry so went to the burger bar to
get a take away.

Shortly after F Class and Star Golds were invited to board. Now this annoying guy had walked up
to the F Class line and stood right in front of me totally ignoring the people including us who had
been waiting there for boarding. I guess you always get people with no manners!

Gareth decided to tuck into his meal while boarding was in process.

Soon after boarding was completed and we made our way to take off. Now the same annoying guy
was still using his electronic devices and the FA told him twice to switch them off. Gareth and I looked
at eachother and were building an idea about this guy. The type of guy who thinks its ok to ignore the
instructions of the crew. He eventually did switch them off.

Now the annoying guy who was sat in front of us spilt red wine over himself. Gareth and I looked
at eachother and I said it was Karma   I know its evil but still.   The FA came down with some
towels and to my surprise said to him ''now thats karma''   Gareth and I looked at eachother and
laughed. I guess she was right and kudos to her for having the balls to say it . She was not a person
to talk back to either. Like I said earlier she was a matron type of a character.

Gareth snapped a shot back to Y .

We pulled up on stand and said thanks to the FA . She asked what we had done whilst on vacation
and I told her . I also said I spent lots of money to help the US Economy to which she smiled and in
her lovely Southern Accent replied '' And we appreciate it ''. We both disembarked with smiles and
made our way to the lounge.

The Envoy seat was very comfortable and had lots of handy items built in. The only thing I would
comment on is the cabin felt cold, not in a temperature way but in looks. I think it had something to
do with the lighting. Maybe the wood panels did not help either. Still Im just being picky. Everything
else was perfect.

After a lovely starter and main course it was time to try the sweets.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/USENVOY/file_zpsdde2c396.jpg

I opted for the ice cream which was delicious and then a Bailey's to get myself ready for sleeping.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/USENVOY/file_zps7b671952.jpg

The crew came around and put bottles of water in every seat . Always a nice idea.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/USENVOY/file_zpsaae0b6d4.jpg

After being very well fed and watered it was time to get some rest so I went into flatbed mode and
put the blanket over me and got a few hours sleep . The FA came and asked if I wanted anything
else but I thanked her and said I was fine.

strong !

We pulled up on stand and disembarked the aircraft thanking the crew for a lovely flight.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/USENVOY/file_zps1929339b.jpg

Gareth and I made our way to baggage reclaim and waited for what seemed to be ages for our bags.
When the bags did come off two of them were damaged. Gareth's Samsonite case and my sports
bag was ripped. We proceeded to the baggage services desk where we were met by some rude
staff who tried to insist that US Airways would not accept responsibilty. After pointing out to them
a few things and them realising we knew our rights they backed down and gave us two baggage
report references. It was a shame because it soured what had been a great trip. I wonder if they
were just lazy or if US Airways tries to get away with not paying out even when its their own fault.

Anyway after that Gareth and I went to get the hire car. We had decided to hire a car for the day and
drive into London and go shopping at Harrods as we had an evening flight back to Dublin. Gareth's
girlfriend was also flying in from Dublin to join us for Xmas shopping

We made our way to South Terminal arrivals and waited for her to arrive. After a while Gareth's
girlfriend arrived and we all made our way to London by car.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAUS1/file_zps7323839f.jpg

On the way from Gatwick we made a pit stop at my Mums house to drop two of my bags . I did
not want to take everything back so left two for another time. Very handy

Eventually we got into London the traffic was quite heavy.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAUS1/file_zpsc41bfb46.jpg

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAUS1/file_zps6aae2cef.jpg

So we parked at the Harrods undeground car park. You pay quite alot for it but time was a big
factor for us so we paid for the location of it.

First stop was Nespresso around the corner for some of the new variations blends. I also
wanted to look at the new Lattisima machine which I bought later.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAUS1/file_zps7d8f304b.jpg

Then after a nice coffee at the bar it was time to head to Harrods.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAUS1/file_zps24222554.jpg

It did not take us long to get back to LHR where we dropped the car off and took the shuttle to
Terminal 1 .

Gareth's girlfriend had been booked in Y and we were in Club Europe. We had been unable to
get a paid upgrade at the check in desk or an op up but this was not a huge issue.

After a while it was time for boarding. I was at the gate first and boarded and Gareth and his
girlfriend followed later. As Gareth had boarded he asked again if there was anyway we could
all sit together. The FA was very nice and came to me and asked if I minded us all sitting in one
row to which of course I said was fine. The FA adjusted the arm rests and upgraded her to sit
with us. A very nice gesture to which we were very grateful.

Gareth and his girlfriend went to catch their bus to Galway and I went to get mine for Newry.

Thats the end of the report. I hope you all enjoyed it. It was the end to an amazing trip for us and
was sad in a way it was all over. For me I had to go home for 12 hours before I would be taking
another trip

I look forward to your comments as always. I really do appreciate them all.

Kind regards

Philip / OA260

Hey Philip,

Thanks for the fab report documenting our return journey. The whole trip was truly amazing and the journey back was a very pleasant ending. I told you US weren't that bad in J class.

Thanks again for another great report and being such a brilliant travelling companion.

Hi Philip,

Yet another great TR! I hope you and Gareth had a great cruise. Say hi to Gareth for me the next time to you speak to him (or hello Gareth if you read this!).

Some comments:

What are the USA lounges all about? I still can't believe the food and beverage offerings are so poor. I mean, a voucher for 'ONE free premium spirit' when you're flying long haul in a premium cabin. It's embarrassing!

I do really like the domestic First Class seats - that's where the US have it right. I can't believe in Europe they get away with selling economy seats with the middle one blocked as Business Class. Oh how I miss bmi and their mid-hauls!

I love the fact they serve Tanqueray - my favourite! But in plastic....

Quoting gpbcroppers63 (Reply 13):
Pre take off drinks were served.

That looks like proper glass!

I really like the new seats, much better than the old ones.

The food looks very good.

Quoting gpbcroppers63 (Reply 15):
After what seemed a very short sleep it was time to wake up and get ready for the breakfast service.

Oh I just don't like those overnight flights. I always take the day flights from the east coast. I just feel dreadful (read hungover!) when I wake up after my 3-4 hour sleep. Next week I am in BOS and I am staying an extra night just to take the day flight back.

Quoting gpbcroppers63 (Reply 15):
After pointing out to them
a few things and them realising we knew our rights they backed down

Oh, they should have realised who they were dealing with!

I'm amazed they did this. It's a real no-no in their rules! Bit of a result for Gareth's girlfriend though!

So what's the next trip and how long do we need to wait for the next TR?

Delta offers unlimited alcoholic beverages at all Sky Clubs and Businesselite Lounges worldwide. Delta also offers at some locations a luxury bar (ex-JFK) where you can purchase super-premium liqueur such as St. Germain, Domaine de Canton, etc... while others such as Beefeaters, Absolut, Sky, Bacardi, are free and unlimited.

Continental was unlimited at all Presidents Clubs worldwide, but I am unsure if this applies at United.

Virgin America, Virgin Loft, is a nominal fee for each alcoholic beverage.

American offers (2) drink certificates at Admirals Clubs.

Alaska Airlines, Boardroom, offers complimentary alcoholic beverages and they are unlimited.

And yes Philip, it would be a perfect world to have the lovely European Meals mixed with our Domestic First Class Seats here in the USA... thank you again!

I was too. Like I said I had a terrible experience some years back MIA-PHL-LGW in F/Envoy and vowed never to fly them again so this was a real surprise. Gareth had flown them the year before and said Envoy suites were really good so I knew it should be decent as he would have the same standards as me regarding products.

The UA lounge we went to in EWR did have unlimited drinks (albeit served by a bar tender rather than self-service as over here). "Premium" drinks had to be paid for but we still managed a G&T and a Baileys without paying so it wasn't too bad.

Yeah that would be a great combination. BMI midhauls were brilliant. I'd always have a grin on my face when I did online check-in and saw the mid-haul seating config. My favourite was when they put the 757 on one of my flights to Dublin.
Quoting airlineanorak (Reply 16):
I love the fact they serve Tanqueray - my favourite! But in plastic....

It was very nice. I've commented on US' use of plastic cups in domestic F class before. I think it's very poor to be honest (see my previous TR about US domestic F for more info US/LX F/J MIA-PHL-YUL-ZRH-DUB (by gpbcroppers63 Jan 30 2012 in Trip Reports)).

Quoting airlineanorak (Reply 16):

Yes I was really surprised as well. I did ask very nicely and very subtly at the end of boarding and they were fine with it. They even said we could all move to Row 6 which was completely empty if we still wanted the middle seat free but we were fine where we were. I have to say, I've been very impressed by the way BA treat their gold card holders since making the switch.

Hi Philip my friend!

Good to see you catching up on your writing and I was really looking forward to see your report on US' Envoy Class. I very much agree with you on the whole, although I do kinda like the business style of the cabin with the wooden panels. The herringbone seating arrangement? Not sure, maybe 1 day if I get to experience that myself, I can judge   Good to see you did some serious shopping in New York and in London!

Wow, that actually looks really great. Much better than the single, shrink wrapped "pastry" one get down the back

First stop was Nespresso around the corner for some of the new variations blends. I also
wanted to look at the new Lattisima machine which I bought later.

I'd love to have a look round your house one day Phil....it must be like walking into a top end show room!

Quoting OA260 (Reply 12):
The FA was very nice and came to me and asked if I minded us all sitting in one
row to which of course I said was fine. The FA adjusted the arm rests and upgraded her to sit
with us. A very nice gesture to which we were very grateful.

i guess this is very against SOP? Nice of her to do that, but must have raised alarm bells with the other customers. Was Club all full? Might have been better, if it wasn't, for you to move elsewhere, and let Gareth and his gf have your row? Still, glad it wokred out ok.

Haha, you and your shopping!

Indeed well no point paying the over inflated prices in UK and Ireland when you can stock up in the USA for next to nothing.   More money for holidays
Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 31):

I'm surprised that made it to LGW intact

Indeed I was expecting it to come off bashed but it was in the same condition as when it was checked. Just a shame the normal bag was ripped but lucky nothing fell out as I had some new Sketchers in there.

Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 31):
Haha, imagine the stares if you'd done that on the BA flight!

Yes some turned up noses would be seen for sure .

Club was quite full IIRC . We were happy to all sit together and chat so was no point moving anyway to sit next to a stranger.

Hi Philip (and Gareth I guess?!), thanks for another enjoyable read.

I'm also a fan of the orange chicken they do in the US, although I couldn't find any while I was in NYC! I've done my research though, and managed to track some down in Washington in a couple of weeks.

US J class looks pretty good actually - I wouldn't mind giving them a go sometime. Even the domestic sector looked pretty decent - some of the European carriers could learn a thing or two, rather than just a converted economy seat.

The BA lounge in T1 looked a bit bare compared to its BD days - how does it compare now?

Looking forward to reading about your next trip.

I won't have you casting aspersions on my generosity as a boyfriend.    She was delighted to be able to join us in J class though and the FA went above and beyond by offering her the meal as they had some spare. It is the one that was restored and then went technical on take off bound for Opa Locka. Hopefully she will fly again soon! I am ex-Eastern Air Lines so I really want to see her fly! And fly on her too! I am happy to see the US Lounge is nice in CLT too. CLT is a great little airport. Not much to see except the special Airbus jets in the different themes. But those are really cool. Doubt they will stay though with the merger.

The US Envoy Class looks fantastic too. The US product in YCL is not great so I am happy to see the JCL looking good. Thanks for sharing! Cheers, WIll

Hi Philip,

Absolutely wonderful TR! Both your trip reports have been amazing and I do hope I have the chance to try them out one day (*new inspiration*). In fact after your first TR I visited Cunard's website to see if I could do short cruise just to experience their service. Sadly, I couldn't find one that fits my schedule.

Pity that you had to have a guy cut your queue while boarding, guess he really got what he deserved. Must have been a trouble to clean it up. Also, sorry to hear about the crack on the buggage. Otherwise, looks like you had an amazing holiday! I would agree with you on the shopping, some things are a lot cheaper in the States than in Europe. I spot some A&F bags too, they're at least 30% cheaper there.

Glad BA allowed Gareth's girlfriend to move up to J with you guys, definitely living up to their slogan. Also, did you purchase the US plane model? I make it a point to buy one on new airlines/planes

Thanks for sharing! Cheers, David

Hola Philip!

A great report with plenty of crisp pictures to get us really into the trip.

Great shopping experience in the malls, good idea to get a hotel next to the mall and for sure a really profitable afternoon: from cookware to jackets, everything one may need to renovate all the cupboards. I am sure American economy is grateful to you.

US really surprised me, I was not expecting much from this airline, but really their product seems to be above standards. The seat seems very comfortable and the food looked really nice and well presented. I have never been on this herringbone cabins and I do not know how much you have to twist your neck to look out of the window.

It is a pity that you had that nasty incident with luggage at the end of the trip, I do not understand why they have to be so rude when they have had an incident with your suitcases. Why are they there for?

Nice gesture of BA letting you three sit together in C-class, that¡s a really nice touch and praises the purser for having this nice gesture to loyal customers. Well done!

Salut!

Yes so much so . The things I got in A&F were 70% off. I came out with a good few bags and really felt like I got a great deal which is always nice. It means that if I see something I really like in Dublin or London A&F I dont feel so bad if I pay out full price . I had never seen anything on US Airways' 'new' J before, so i was all eyes and ears on your TR   In fact, i was also pleasantly surprised at how good the entire product seemed! Even the seats looked clean and crisp on your domestic hop from EWR!

Hi Philip,

Nice read and pictures, thanks for posting, glad I finally found the time to read it.

Quoting OA260 (Reply 3):
The snacks and drinks were not bad considering and we had some nice views

- The views from that lounge are good but I find the catering options a bit weak.

Quoting OA260 (Reply 6):
Now the annoying guy who was sat in front of us spilt red wine over himself. Gareth and I looked
at eachother and I said it was Karma   I know its evil but still.   The FA came down with some
towels and to my surprise said to him ''now thats karma''   Gareth and I looked at eachother and
laughed. I guess she was right and kudos to her for having the balls to say it . She was not a person
to talk back to either. Like I said earlier she was a matron type of a character.

- Now that is funny!
Quoting OA260 (Reply 8):
Drinks certs , I still dont like this concept. It should be a free bar.

- Agreed, I thought they might have done away with these stupid things by now.

Quoting OA260 (Reply 8):
The Envoy seat was very comfortable and had lots of handy items built in. The only thing I would
comment on is the cabin felt cold, not in a temperature way but in looks. I think it had something to
do with the lighting. Maybe the wood panels did not help either. Still Im just being picky. Everything
else was perfect.

- The cabin looks a bit bland really, the mix of that stupid wood effect is just not right.

Quoting OA260 (Reply 12):
After take off the meal service commenced. Gareth and I were expecting a meal but Gareth's
girlfriend was not. We were very surprised when the FA gave us all meals and thanked him
once again.

- Nice touch by the crew, impressed.

Cheers

Mark

Really great report, Phil!

I'm really impressed by US Airways Envoy Class! Food looks really good, and I think the breakfast looks to be the best one I've ever seen served in J on an early morning arrival into Europe! Still, US could probably serve drinks in real glasses on its domestic flights; seems a bit strange to be serving them in plastic ...

Great to see what US is doing up the front in J - the flight looked quite nice and the service pretty good. I was quite surprised as I've heard and read lots of negative press about US generally these days. The A330 is one of my favourite aircraft so nice to see that you flew on one of those birds.

Great also to see some Dash 8s in your report, even though you went flying on any!

Thanks again, really enjoyed both parts.

Thanks for sharing this trip report with us. Nice to get an inside look at US's Envoy Class. If you don't mind a bit of feedback, I'd suggest that in the future you could cut back the number of pictures a bit. It did seem like there were many (near) duplicates and on slower internet connections, that makes for a wait. Nonetheless, nice report with lots of detail.

Hi, P.,

such a number of great pictures, well done. Really good to follow you´re story and it seems US done it well this time.
Interesting to see these US style map with all the ships noted.
Also the BA service sounds nice.

- The views from that lounge are good but I find the catering options a bit weak.

Yes true I guess you cant have it all
Quoting ba319-131 (Reply 53):
- The cabin looks a bit bland really, the mix of that stupid wood effect is just not right.

Im still in two minds about it. I like it because its so different but then I wonder does it really work. You remember when BMI had that black and silver wallpaper on their bulkheads? Its kind of one of those moments.

Really great report, Phil!

Hi Matthew   Thanks for the reply.

That's hilarious, and I'm amazed by her gutsy ness as well!

I know if I ever was going to see her again ( probably unlikely ) I would buy her a box of chocs or something. She really deserved it.

Quoting palmjet (Reply 55):
Great also to see some Dash 8s in your report, even though you went flying on any!

Hi and thanks for the reply. Your right cant go wrong with a few Dash 8's

Hi and thanks for your reply and feedback. Well my reports are well known for huge photo content so I have to appologise in advance for those on slower speeds. I feel your pain as for years I had no broadband and just dial up but the only thing I used to do was load the page go away make a cup of coffee and then read it

I accept the challenge but I'll have to look later as I don't have time to go through all of the pics again in work.

OK, I think I've found it:

Hi Philip,

great report with many nice pictures! US' J Class product is indeed impressive, as you already told me some weeks ago. The food in particular looks great.

Did you get any compensation for the baggage damage?

I think all US carriers give drink vouchers for their lounges.
Quoting AirAfreak (Reply 24):
Delta offers unlimited alcoholic beverages at all Sky Clubs and Businesselite Lounges worldwide. Delta also offers at some locations a luxury bar (ex-JFK) where you can purchase super-premium liqueur such as St. Germain, Domaine de Canton, etc... while others such as Beefeaters, Absolut, Sky, Bacardi, are free and unlimited.

DL only operates SkyClubs now (BusinessElite lounges converted years ago) and is renovating them to modern designs. The new Luxurybar concept is kind of neat if you have premium tastes, but I'm just usually having a few [local] beers or G&Ts. I did splurge for a good, well-made Mojito at the new ATL F-concourse SkyClub once.

SkyClub access is available for $25 a visit if you're a Delta AMEX card holder. 2 premium drinks at the bar, some internet, snacks, etc. and it's paid for itself.

Vouchers for drinks is a bit tacky if you're a premium passenger. Hopefully US and AA do away with pay-for-drinks once the merger happens.

Great trip report and photos. I never had the chance to fly US Airways International route and their Envoy Seats. I did however flown on Cathay's Business Class a few times which uses the same Cirrus seats from Sigma. They are indeed very nice and comfortable. Much better than the First class seats twenty years ago. I believe American is having the same product on their new 77W's. Hope they will upgrade all their older 772's with these comfortable seats. Once again, thank you.

Also the US airways product looks very nice. I loved the wood finished walls..Classy indeed..Dinner service looks nice and I also noticed they were serving Glenlivet...Most carriers dont serve that scotch...Atleast I havent noticed it on the menu....

Well done and keep writing..!

Hi Philip,

Think I must have missed this one so sorry for the late reply. What a great continuation of the holiday and what an epic shopping trip! US looks really good in C - the food was presented so well and the seats looks very comfy. You got some nice pics after take off from New York too. Any particular reason for the routing via CLT?

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
This was actually a mistake as we got
ripped off. The guy charged us $70 but when we came back with a local driver it was half that. Still not
knowing any different we could not do anything. Still I did not let it annoy me too much as I saved a fortune
on the cookware set.

always annoying when something like that happens. Let's hope the driver got some karma and bumped his car later that day
Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
Later that night it was time to try pack everything. That was the fun part.

Oh yes, I know all about that!

Quoting OA260 (Reply 6):
Now the annoying guy who was sat in front of us spilt red wine over himself. Gareth and I looked
at eachother and I said it was Karma I know its evil but still

You see? Karma is everywhere!

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
We proceeded to the baggage services desk where we were met by some rude
staff who tried to insist that US Airways would not accept responsibilty. After pointing out to them
a few things and them realising we knew our rights they backed down and gave us two baggage
report references. It was a shame because it soured what had been a great trip. I wonder if they
were just lazy or if US Airways tries to get away with not paying out even when its their own fault.

What appalling behaviour and what a load of rubbish. Good job you stood up to them but think how many unsuspecting travellers they could fob off with that story.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
I did
not want to take everything back so left two for another time. Very handy

Or were you too close to the customs allowance?

Really kind of BA to upgrade Gareth's girlfriend too.

Happy flying
