Auf Wiedersehen FTL! LH/LO/OS LHR-DUS-WAW-VIE-LHR

Intro

Hi!

Welcome to my latest report covering my January & February flights with Lufthansa, LOT Polish and Austrian Airlines.

My flights for this trip

LH 3381 LHR-DUS B737
LH 3022 DUS-WAW CR9
LO 225 WAW-VIE E190
OS 455 VIE-LHR A320

My route, courtesy of GC Mapper, of this reports

Hmmm, why this trip?

Well, having been a fairly happy Lufthansa Silver (FTL) member for the past ten years or so, my recent reduction in travel between China and the UK meant that my status was soon to expire. Whilst it was sad to say goodbye to the Silver card, it must be said that the perks offered by the FTL card had been slowly but surely eroded over the years, as well as the ability to achieve Silver status getting ever harder.

I mean, back in 2003 when I first qualified, there was a 25% miles bonus on all flights, even those operated by random partners. Now it’s just the LH family. My miles rocketed up! On the sadder side, taxes on mileage ticket are often crazily high compared to cash tickets. Miles required for awards increased. Earning also got harder. Cheap European sectors dropped from 750 miles per leg to 125. Contract lounge access was stopped (so no access outside of Germany/Austria/Switzerland and a few other places). And perhaps most pertinent for me, following the sale of BD to BA, there was no longer a lounge in LHR. As the 1 March deadline approached, I made no effort to requalify. I was even sent a cheeky email from LH asking if I would like to pay a staggering EUR 500 to renew my status for a year…..thanks Lufthansa, but no thanks. The party’s over.

So, before my FTL status bit the dust, I thought it time to do three lounges missing from my list, namely the LH lounge in DUS, the LO lounge in WAW, and the new OS lounge in VIE, as well as my first flight on LO. After a lot of playing around on Expedia, I managed to construct my perfect trip, as illustrated above. I booked a 4 night stay in Poland, and 1 night in Vienna.

So, onto the Report

There was no queue at the Business desk in LHR…my bag was tagged, and my boarding pass was issued by a very solemn lady.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/shefgab/FTL/DSCF6830.jpg

I managed to get into the Fast Track queue at security. Of course as I neared the scanners it was clear that the Fast Track queue was longer than the rest, so I ducked under the barrier and joined a normal queue (security staff hate it when you do this. I guess they hate their jobs so much they feel sick when someone queues for less than a minimum amount of time).

This morning there seemed to be some issues with the departure boards…no gates were being displayed

Thanks to my Priority Pass card, I had access to the dull windowless Servisair lounge

A nice old school Lufthansa Boeing at the gate. The plane was scheduled for a A320, so I didn’t know where my originally selected seat would end up

It turns out my seat was now in the very last row. I commented to the friendly FA standing at the back that my seat had moved. He was pretty jovial, apologising for the change, and wishing me a pleasant flight. We had a bit of a chat. He commiserated the fact that I was headed to Warsaw. “I was there last week, it was freezing!”.

DUS indeed
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/shefgab/FTL/DSCF6932.jpg

There was a rather long line for immigration (just one guy checking everyone from the LHR’s passport).

Once I was through I had around 3 hours before my WAW flight. There are 3 Piroty Pass lounges in DUS, plus the LH lounge. It turned out that I could only get to one of the PP lounges, the newly refurbished Hugo Junkers lounge. Annoyingly, there is no direct airside transit, so I had to go landside, then walk down to the B terminal, before going through security again. Bit of a hassle, but I wanted to check out that lounge!

DUS is a nice airport landside.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/shefgab/FTL/DSCF6951.jpg

Which way?

The lounge – not a very welcoming door!

When I was in DUS last year flying Sun Air of DUS-BLL-MAN, I used the BA lounge, which is now the new screening area. I guess BA now use this lounge. It was really busy, and not terribly interesting, so just time for a quick drink and snack.

With my bag collected, I was headed into Warsaw on the bus to connect to my train to Krakow (I’d decided against doing too much, and thought I’d check out Poland’s most touristic city instead. Flying into KRK was a lot more expensive than WAW).

The big “attraction” of the area is of course the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Not a lot to say about it that hasn’t already been said, although I was quite shocked at how small the whole place was. The original Auschwitz camp is only a couple of football pitches big.

I was quite keen to check out my first LOT lounge. Wow, it was busy! So busy in fact that I couldn’t find a single empty seat. I’d checked online, and there is a shower in the lounge. The staff directed me to the back of the lounge. “Have you got a towel?” she asks. Er, how many business travellers fly with their own towel? “No”. She handed me a rather horrid disposable paper towely thing.

The shower room was tiny, and got very steamy. Still, there was good water pressure.

With my shower complete, I headed back into the lounge…sadly the place was even busier now. The only only seats I could see were in the roped off First Class/HON area. Oh, what the hell, if someone asks me to move, then I will…might as well make myself comfortable.

There was a reasonable selection at the buffet, although it was so poorly laid out and cramped only one person could serve themselves at a time.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/shefgab/FTL/DSCF7549.jpg

Overall, I though the lounge was good in theory, but just way too busy and poorly laid out. With about half an hour to go before boarding, I thought I’d check out the PP lounge directly below the LOT lounge.
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/shefgab/FTL/DSCF7538.jpg

Somewhat unsurprisingly, the catering in here was nearly exactly the same as upstairs. The lounge was smaller, but just as busy.

Oh, I just love E jets…they’re mostly new, which surely helps, but they always look so smart and comfortable. I was welcomed aboard with a big smile…LOT crew seem friendly.

Sadly, this flight went by pretty quickly. I had time for one final beer before the seat belt signs came on before some pretty rough turbulence. It was a rough approach, but we landed safely ten minutes early.
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/shefgab/FTL/DSCF7624.jpg

Over the past decade, I flew through VIE quite a few times (TSR, KBP, EVN, TIA, FRA, PRG, PVG, and LHR of course), so knew the old airport and lounges quite well. However, since my last trip, VIE has opened the new (C) terminal…I was happy to see that this is where we parked.
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/shefgab/FTL/DSCF7631.jpg

Hmm, first impressions are mixed….clean and warm, but boring and poorly signposted. For a brand new wing, I was a bit disappointed with it. At least the old terminal had a bit of character, rather than a bland black and white building of endless corridors.

With a morning free at my disposal, I did a quick tour of Vienna.

Can’t come to Vienna and not have a wienerschnitzel!

I decided to leave myself plenty of time to get to the airport…no point spending money on cafes in town, when I can have unlimited free drinks overlooking the runway in the lounge. Sadly, I managed to time my journey with a major power outage. What should have taken 20 minutes took nearly 2 hours. No information at all. I ended up having to throw away my normal ticket, and buying a new ticket for the CAT Express train….I wasn’t very happy. I spent all my drinking time waiting on a platform instead.
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/shefgab/FTL/DSCF7685.jpg

One benefit of the wait was that I could get my boarding card printed at the station check in desks (although, sadly, they weren’t accepting luggage due to the train confusion.

I also had just enough time to check out the neighbouring PP Sky Lounge.

There was no view from in here, but the catering was slightly better than in the OS lounge…shame about the very loud group that were having quite the party in the corner.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p207/shefgab/FTL/IMAG0348.jpg

So, what did I think?

Lufthansa were their same old selves. It was nice to get a plane change of an old 737…a bit rarer than the standard A320 malarkey. Catering was filling, if not fattening. The DUS lounge was not great surprised…a carbon copy of their FRA and MUC lounges, if not a little larger and emptier. Sadly, no shower facilities in this one though.

Eurowings, well, are basically LH in miniature. No issues with this no nonsense airline.

LOT Polish were as good as I’d hoped. The E-jets are lovely little planes, and the catering was perfect for the short flight. The lounge was way too busy, but I guess as more and more people give up with shiny LH Miles & More cards, it might empty out a bit? WAW is now on my airport shower list  Austrian have lost a little of their sparkle, but are still a smart and efficient little airline. Just a shame those 787 order Aprils Fool’s Day jokes were, well, jokes.

As always, all comments and questions welcome, and thanks for reading about my latest trip!

G’day Gabriel!

Nice idea to go and celebrate the end of your FTL term with some lounge hopping. Good to see some pics from the new terminal in VIE. It doesn’t look half that bad and certainly an improvement over the older terminals there. I do like that to-the-point minimalistic style, but it appears that some of the seating follow more the form than function.

And you made a good decision not to stay in Vienna city but to go straight to the airport. Else wise you maybe would’ve missed your flight due to the power outage.

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
I wonder what things would be like now if BA had got into bed with LX

A Crossed Jack or Union Cross or...?

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
Annoyingly, there is no direct airside transit

I hear you. And that for an airport the size of DUS. Hard to comprehend actually.

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
And my plane

I really like those Eurowings CRJ’s. Had a flight on one of those not too long ago from DUS to OTP.

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
Lunch is served…not too bad

Only 1 sandwich? I got a pack containing 2 back then! And also Gouda cheese and rocket salad.

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
Flying into KRK was a lot more expensive than WAW).

I thought Polish domestics were well priced? So no flight in a rather new Eurolot Dash8 for you then...

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
So it was them that bought all the LH seats!

Nice!

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
“Have you got a towel?” she asks. Er, how many business travellers fly with their own towel? “No”. She handed me a rather horrid disposable paper towely thing.

One would think that a lounge would provide a decent set of towels courtesy of its own. Clearly not. The question itself already rises my eyebrows.

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
Some more planes

That’s an exotic, one the Enter Air.

I know, that was lucky. Quite a few people missed flights I think

Hi Robert. Yes, some fairly good flights...lucky none of them were too busy. Lounges were generally good too.

Great report.
Next time you're in Warsaw: Next to the Centralna Main Raliway Station is the Zlote Tarasy shopping center. In the basement level is a LOT Ticket/Sales Office. They sell branded LOT merchandise, including models, travel accesories, etc. The staff are super nice. I bought a LOT coffee mug that I use all the time!

Hi Gab,

I've lost track with your trip reports recently as there are rather a lot of them, so this was a good one to get me started again!

Shame about the status, but yes, LH are making it difficult. Maybe if they have an exodus it might make them realise.

Krakow looks worth a visit too, but preferably at a warmer time of year!

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
There was no queue at the Business desk in LHR…my bag was tagged, and my boarding pass was issued by a very solemn lady.

Maybe it was fitting to your mood of losing the FTL status?!

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
wonder what things would be like now if BA had got into bed with LX

Now that's an unusual way of putting it

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
The butter pretzel is tasty, but has it about a loaf’s worth of butter on it. I can feel my arteries clogging as I eat it.

Yeah, sadly that's the norm with pretzels in the German speaking world.

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
Nice to see the new Air Malta

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
Great legroom in the emergency row

Fantastic!

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
was quite surprised to see that one of the highest rated spots in Krakow was the Aviation Museum…better check it out!

Yeah, it's supposed to be very good. I was in contact with one of the employees there and she sent me some really interesting material.

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
Hmm, first impressions are mixed….clean and warm, but boring and poorly signposted. For a brand new wing, I was a bit disappointed with it. At least the old terminal had a bit of character, rather than a bland black and white building of endless corridors.

I used VIE for the first time in February, so I can't compare it to the old terminal. I didn't like it though: dark and depressing. Departures was even worse, a very poor selection of shops & bars and they were more expensive than here in ZRH!

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
Sadly, I managed to time my journey with a major power outage. What should have taken 20 minutes took nearly 2 hours. No information at all. I ended up having to throw away my normal ticket, and buying a new ticket for the CAT Express train….I wasn’t very happy. I spent all my drinking time waiting on a platform instead.

A shame about the wasted lounge time, but I guess this just proves the point about always leaving enough time for your journey to the airport

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
With everyone aboard (middle seat empty), we taxied out past this nice KE 330. They used to operate the 777 IIRC.

You can fly VIE-ZRH on that, but the prices are horrendous whenever I look.

That sandwich on OS is a bit stingy on a flight to London. I got one of those on the short hop to ZRH.

Happy flying & see you Saturday

Hey there Gabriel Chew,

Nice report and sad to see your FTL status going away. I think LH should've let you keep it for life considering you've had it for 10 years. Oh well…

The lounges looked pretty nice, and it appears that the FTL Lounge in DUS is larger than the Senator Lounge. Also the armchairs looked comfier as the Senator Lounge had the old ones. Again I don't see what logic Lufthansa are using.

Must say that OS looked quite decent, although surprised they hand't fitted the aircraft with the new NEK seats. I will be passing through VIE next week and I'm wondering which lounge is the better. Should I go for the non-Schengen or the Schengen ones?

Thanks Gabriel,
nice routing.

I found the lounge in WAW pretty nice with all that "fake" green, but it's indeed small. Snack selection is small, but at least the hams cheeses etc are polish and nice.

As for VIE, I had the pleasure to be invited by OS to do an airport tour a few months ago and was quite shocked. Transiting is longer than before. It's badly signposted indeed. The floor is black, the walls are white. This airport is boring as hell. The materials are cheap: i.e. the white walls: There a lot of stains and scratches everywhere, especially next to escalators, where people drag their bags along the walls. In the waiting areas the floor is not out of stone, but of some kind of plastic, which has a lot of scratches. It seems to have not enough seats at rush hour, plus in some areas it's almost dangerous: i.e. where stairs go up, underneith people bang their heads... It's not terrible, but the whole thing is not spectacular and will look very used in very short time.

The old terminal however is now relaxed. They removed the gate security check points, and have made one central security checkpoin, which has been cramped more or less downstairs where the bus gates are. It's a bit awkward, as you need to go down, queue for security, and then go up again. But due to the terminal layout this is the only place.

The OS lounge is not spectacular in my opinion. Maybe I was unlucky, but - and I flew Schengen - this lounge was totally packed. Like the old LH lounges in FRA....

Hi Gabriel,

that was a good read and nice to say goodbye to LH group this way. I don't say goodbye by flying them... I just have to burn my miles and then I'm done with them. My FTL is gone also since January this year.

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
Whilst it was sad to say goodbye to the Silver card, it must be said that the perks offered by the FTL card had been slowly but surely eroded over the years, as well as the ability to achieve Silver status getting ever harder.

No tears here when I got it exchanged for a blue card earlier this year...

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
Yes it was early, but I needed a G&T…a few personal stresses!

We all have those moments!

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):

VIE is one big dump airport, definitely worst of all 'main' airports in Europe when you ask me. They can do so much better.

Eric

The VS planes look great in that light!

How about Sachertorte?

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
Catering was similar to what I remember in the past, although the sandwiches were a little smaller. Once (I think 2006? After the reintroduced free catering) I even got a full hot meal (Sunday lunch…roast beef and potatoes!) on this route.
OS' catering used to be awesome - now it's rather basic and cannot match Niki's.

Quoting gabrielchew (Thread starter):
The lounge was way too busy, but I guess as more and more people give up with shiny LH Miles & More cards, it might empty out a bit?

Possibly. But if LH mostly loses those who just have a status and usually just buy cheap Y Class tickets, it doesn't really care, I guess.
