After my last A380 flight less than a year ago, I wondered when would be my next A380 flight. Little did I know that it would come so soon, and on an airline that I hadn't flown before: QANTAS.

We (dad, mom, and I) started in XNA regional airport, in Northwest Arkansas. Built in 1998, it is the second largest airport in the state of Arkansas (behind LIT).

Our routing was XNA-DFW, DFW-LAX, LAX-SYD, with everything but the last flight being on AA.

Our flight plan for the first flight, XNA-DFW:

My excitement for this trip went even higher after seeing this. Flightaware said that N368AA, the first and only AA 763 in the new livery, would be operating my flight (2467 to LAX)!

After arriving at the airport, I unzipped my camera bag and.... Pulled this out.

I was in shock. At the time, it was attached to my D3000, so everything looked mangled. It was an ugly sight. That meant that I would have to take pictures with my iPhone 4S, so sorry for the low quality on some of them!

We uneventfully checked in and passed through security. Here is the first plane that I saw, an Eagle ERJ before departing to ORD.

Soon, or MD80 came in for our flight to DFW. I'm impressed that XNA has mainline service!

About to get the bags loaded on:

The gate next to ours that has the ERJ to ORD.

I'm also impressed by the non-stop flights to LGA! Thanks Walmart for all these flights!  http://i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o484/kann123air/IMG_1385_zps1a6aa461.jpg

US CRJ to CLT.

Okay legroom. It's only for 55 minutes anyway.

We then took off. About 10 minutes after takeoff I took this:

Pretty filled flight:

Pulling into Terminal A:
http://i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o484/kann123air/IMG_1426_zpsc8cc04be.jpg

For the heck of it, I asked for a view of the cockpit. The very gracious captain had me sit down in his seat, and gave me an inside-out tour of the MD-80!

It feels....weird seeing an Eagle CR2! First time I saw one was here on the skylink.
http://i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o484/kann123air/IMG_1432_zps0812bb1a.jpg

And here's the first time I saw the "New American". I must admit, it looked cool in person.
http://i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o484/kann123air/IMG_1437_zps5d7bc89f.jpg

Throughout this whole time, I was looking for N368AA, because, after all, it was supposed to operate my flight to LAX. I couldn't see it!

Overview of Terminal D.... No sign of a new livery!

Darn!! N355AA, not N368AA, was parked at the gate. Later I learned that 368AA left earlier for OGG.... Thanks for raising my hopes flightaware!  http://i1144.photobucket.com/albums/o484/kann123air/IMG_1487_zps1ae4caad.jpg

For me, G'day to Paradise!

AA didn't disappoint, but didn't impress either. The only unexpected thing was the cockpit visits on both the MD80 and 767. However, the QF A380 was fantastic! Although it was not up to SQ's A380 standards, it was really good. My ratings below:

For the A380:
Comfort: 8/10
Service: 10/10
Food: 9/10

I didn't think that this service by QF could be beaten... However, I was proved wrong. The return (SYD-DFW-XNA), which was on QF 7 (The 3rd longest flight in the world) proved to be better! I didn't think it would be, but the refurbed 744ER was fantastic. That TR is coming soon.

So, after this trip, my top 5 flights ever flown are:

1) QF #7, 744ER, SYD-DFW, March 2013
2) SQ #317, A388, LHR-SIN, June 2012
3) EY #151, 773ER, AUH-ORD, July 2012
4) QF #12, A388, LAX-SYD, March 2013
5) BA #57, 744, LHR-JNB, November 2005

Hi Kann123air,

Awesome report even though you took the pics with your iphone. You have documented everything well.

Quoting kann123air (Thread starter):
Flightaware said that N368AA, the first and only AA 763 in the new livery, would be operating my flight (2467 to LAX)!
Quoting kann123air (Thread starter):
Darn!! N355AA, not N368AA, was parked at the gate. Later I learned that 368AA left earlier for OGG.... Thanks for raising my hopes flightaware!

Thats a disappointment.

Quoting kann123air (Thread starter):

After arriving at the airport, I unzipped my camera bag and.... Pulled this out.

OMG! That is just terrible. I would have been in a state of shock.

Quoting kann123air (Thread starter):
For the heck of it, I asked for a view of the cockpit. The very gracious captain had me sit down in his seat, and gave me an inside-out tour of the MD-80!
Quoting kann123air (Thread starter):
Although I didn't think it would work out, I asked the FA if I could see the cockpit. After a brief call to the flight deck, she said yes! I couldn't believe it! I even got my photo taken in the F/O's seat!
Quoting kann123air (Reply 1):

Quoting kann123air (Reply 1):
.... And in the Upper Deck Business Class lounge!

Aren't you lucky to have these wonderful opportunities. I really like the pic of you in the A380 co-pilot seat!! You will cherish that photo for a long time to come believe me, even as an adult later in life

Quoting kann123air (Thread starter):
And here's the first time I saw the "New American". I must admit, it looked cool in person.

Yes I spotted the new American a few days back and I loved the colour scheme.

Deplaning via stairs at LAX?

Quoting kann123air (Reply 1):
Route: LAX-SYD

You can read my own report on the same route with Qantas http://www.airliners.net/aviation-forums/trip_reports/read.main/161332

Quoting kann123air (Reply 1):
Dinner was then served! It was chicken, which was pretty good.

What was the salad?

Quoting kann123air (Reply 1):
A refresh bag was passed around.

I'm surprised they no longer call it Snack on Q. (Pic taken from my return flight SYD-LAX)

Quoting kann123air (Reply 1):
I didn't think that this service by QF could be beaten... However, I was proved wrong. The return (SYD-DFW-XNA), which was on QF 7 (The 3rd longest flight in the world) proved to be better! I didn't think it would be, but the refurbed 744ER was fantastic. That TR is coming soon.

I found Qantas very mediocre. But I can't just judge them on two flights. I will have to take some more flights in the future with them.

Nice TR! The QF product to AU seems much nicer than on UA/DL from what I've seen, although the hard product has weakened a little bit in Y. Do they still pass out menus in Y?

Hey there! Glad to see another TR of your journeys around the world. Have to say you're pretty well travelled for someone your age!

Quoting kann123air (Thread starter):
After arriving at the airport, I unzipped my camera bag and.... Pulled this out.

wow that is terrible! Good thing your iphone takes pretty good pics eh?

Quoting kann123air (Thread starter):
I'm also impressed by the non-stop flights to LGA! Thanks Walmart for all these flights!

Haha you can say that again! Also - you guys are sitting pretty far back for having status with AA - I suppose there really are that many AA elites in NW Arkansas that all the preferred/elite seats were taken up front?

Quoting kann123air (Thread starter):
For the heck of it, I asked for a view of the cockpit. The very gracious captain had me sit down in his seat, and gave me an inside-out tour of the MD-80!

WOW - how jealous am I right now? I've always been hesitant to see the cockpit in the US - I figure they're not going to take too kindly to a brown person wanting to go there, especially in texas. So I have to give it up to you for even asking! Tried to get a peek inside the cockpit of a NW DC-9 many years back during a delay and got the dirtiest look ever from the f/a. Haven't had the courage to ask again.

Quoting kann123air (Thread starter):
And here's the first time I saw the "New American". I must admit, it looked cool in person.

Definitely looks a TON better in person

Quoting kann123air (Thread starter):
Darn!! N355AA, not N368AA, was parked at the gate. Later I learned that 368AA left earlier for OGG.... Thanks for raising my hopes flightaware!

That's too bad - what a tease!

Quoting kann123air (Thread starter):
This is TBIT? One of the most famous terminals in the world... Desolate!

Haha - isn't TBIT the biggest letdown ever? I'd rate my experience there last month a 1/10, and that's being generous!

Quoting kann123air (Thread starter):
Taxiing. I was listening to LiveATC on my phone the whole time, and I heard "QANTAS 12 super, cleared for takeoff!" Shortly after that, we pulled into the active and took off!

Haha I don't think you're supposed to be doing that
Quoting kann123air (Thread starter):
Dinner was then served! It was chicken, which was pretty good.

Must have tasted better than it looks?

Quoting kann123air (Thread starter):
Delicious! I especially love the concept of tomatoes with breakfast, is it an Australian custom?

That is interesting how they presented it. You can definitely get bagel sandwiches and such with tomatoes in the US though
Quoting kann123air (Thread starter):
Although I didn't think it would work out, I asked the FA if I could see the cockpit. After a brief call to the flight deck, she said yes! I couldn't believe it! I even got my photo taken in the F/O's seat!

You lucky SOB! Incredible! You are living one charmed life you know that?

Thanks for the TR. Really cool stuff. Did you and your fam enjoy your time in Australia? I haven't been yet, hoping to go for the cricket world cup in 2015, assuming the Indian team can get their $hit together!

You really have a nice collection of TRs going - make sure you save them. What a great keepsake they would make to chronicle all your travels!

Looking forward to the next TR! Will we see one of the return trip?

I hope your camera's much better now. Given that your camera wasn't working, the photos are still pretty good!

Can't believe you managed to get to sit in the cockpit of the 380! That's awesome and incredible. Plus the First Class seat. I'm speechless. Hope you enjoyed your stay in Australia!

No, that's just a small gap between the body and the jetbridge.

Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 2):
You can read my own report on the same route with Qantas

I did, it's a nice report!! Seems relatively the same, even though yours is on a 744. Was it a 744ER?

I don't know, I think it had cabbage in it though. Not the best salad!

That's a shame. I found this flight to be good, but nothing compared to the return! (SYD-DFW).

Quoting USAirALB (Reply 3):

On the way (LAX-SYD), they didn't but on the return (SYD-DFW), they did... I wonder why.

True! And it just happened that I got a 4S from a 4 a few days earlier.... That helped me get a slightly better quality too!

AA 292, ORD-DEL
SQ 317, LHR-SIN
SQ......., LAX-TPE-SIN

and a lot more!

Quoting 9w748capt (Reply 4):
you guys are sitting pretty far back for having status with AA - I suppose there really are that many AA elites in NW Arkansas that all the preferred/elite seats were taken up front?

Good point, actually we had to book our tickets separately because we were paying with miles, so only my dad qualified to sit up front. He opted to sit with us at the back.

Quoting 9w748capt (Reply 4):
Tried to get a peek inside the cockpit of a NW DC-9 many years back during a delay and got the dirtiest look ever from the f/a.

I took it to my local camera shop... and they said a replacement lens is more economical than a repair...
I sent a complaint to the TSA, because I'm pretty sure something happened in the screener at XNA.
At least the body itself was fine, and it was only the lens that was destroyed.....

Well, after seeing your 'call for help' for spotting location here in SYD, I was only to happy to help, and after a few emailed to and fro, it was a pleasure to meet you, your family and to (albeit briefly) show you Sydney!!!

I hope to see some photos/TR of the spotting we did here in SYD, and will look forward to reading the return TR on QF7!!

Hi Kann123air

Really nice pictures on your first ever flight to Australia. Seems QF really impressed you on their A380 flight. Having recently flown on one of the A380s I would have to say they had an above average standard with other carriers flying at similar distance.

Quoting kann123air (Thread starter):
I was VERY impressed with the movie selections. From recent releases, like Argo, to Oscar classics, like Cast Away, everything that I liked was there. Later on in the flight, I watched Cast Away.....eerily close to where the crash itself happened!!

I agree with you, the QF entertainment system's movie selections is definitely hard to beat.

Quoting kann123air (Thread starter):
Delicious! I especially love the concept of tomatoes with breakfast, is it an Australian custom?

Well I'm not an Australian, but having flown few times yearly to Australia it is common to see tomatoes included as part of an Australian breakfast.

Quoting kann123air (Thread starter):
Although I didn't think it would work out, I asked the FA if I could see the cockpit. After a brief call to the flight deck, she said yes! I couldn't believe it! I even got my photo taken in the F/O's seat!

Its really great that you get the chance to see and have your picture taken on the cockpit of an A380.

Hope you enjoyed your time in Australia, looking forward to see the QF 7 trip report.
Thanks for sharing this interesting report.

Regards,
Dirktraveller.

that being said, the QF product on the A380 looks quite nice. I wouldn't hesitate to fly it in Y. I kind of wish, for my own selfish reasons, you had flown the 744 flight from DFW (QF 7/8) rather than take it from LAX. I grew up in DFW, so that would have been fun for me to read haha.

Thanks again man, please continue to write.
