Introduction

Hello everyone and welcome to part 1 of this epic USA trip I made back in January.
It all started with Alitalia, where I booked an open jaw GVA-FCO-JFK-ATL-JFK-VCE for the grand total price of 149EUR (more on this in part 2). Leaving GVA in the early morning on the 23rd of January and coming back to VCE the 31st of January.
To get from AMS to GVA I looked at several different options. These included flying Kuwait Airways’ 5th freedom FRA-GVA (for a great report on that 5th freedom route v.v. from fellow a.netter MSS658 see here: Brussels-Frankfurt! The Kuwait Way! (by MSS658 Dec 17 2012 in Trip Reports).
Another option was flying SN Brussels for the first time (sorry Nils & Marc!), but in the end I opted for SAS (AMS-CPH-GVA) as they were the cheapest and it gave me an opportunity to fly their “ new” secondhand A320s. I also believe this is the first report here on SAS’ A320.

With over a week in the USA I booked several other flights and came up with this crazy itinerary:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/map-8_zps4f6692e1.gif

This report will be split into 13 different parts:

Part 1: AMS-CPH-GVA
Part 2: GVA-FCO-JFK-ATL
Part 3: ATL-LAX
Part 4: LAX-BOS
Part 5: BOS-EWR-MCO
Part 6: MCO-SAN
Part 7: SAN-LAX-HNL
Part 8: HNL-KOA-OGG-HNL
Part 9: HNL-LAX-PDX
Part 10: PDX-SEA-BOI-SMF
Part 11: SMF-SFO-ATL
Part 12: ATL-JFK-VCE
Part 13: VCE-ZRH-AMS

I will cover/explain the planning and booking of these flights in each designated part.

So once again welcome to the beginning of this amazing journey, I surely hope you enjoy!

Tuesday January 22

I have been looking forward to this trip months in advance. The closer the trip came, the more nervous I got. Will everything go according to plan? What happens if I miss a connection? I was taking some big risks with that especially during winter time!
After some very busy months at work it is finally time for my two week vacation. On Monday (January 21) I get my final preparations done and pack my bag, all ready to go!
As expected I have trouble falling asleep, so after only four hours of sleep my alarm clock goes off at 06:00. I immediately jump out of bed, feeling very excited, and get my usual morning rituals done. After a quick breakfast and packing some last things into my bag I am all set to go.
My father was kind enough to drop me off at the airport before heading to work. We left the house at 06:45 and made it to the airport at 07:05. I thanked my father, bid him farewell and headed into the departure hall.

Check In

SAS uses check-in row 2 in departure hall 1 here at AMS, so that is where I headed. I had checked in online the night before so just needed to retrieve my BP and drop my bag off at the counter. The check-in area wasn’t busy at all so I was able to use a SSK immediately. After entering in the correct data, the machine successfully spit out my BP and a baggage tag.
I applied the tag to my bag and joined the short line for baggage drop-off. Being number 2 in line I was swiftly helped by a friendly agent and wished a pleasant flight.
I thanked the lady and headed towards security. Security was a breeze so I was through within 10 minutes without any problems.
The original plan was to meet up with fellow a.netter The777Man who was transferring through AMS this morning heading back to the states from Sweden. The plans unfortunately changed last minute which gave me more than enough free time before boarding will commence (09:55).
Instead of staying at the Schengen side I decided to head over to the non-Schengen side to see what was going on there. Clearing passport control was a breeze as I used the self-service machines.
The non-Schengen side was very busy as it always seems to be each morning. I spent quite some time watching people and of course looking at the planes.
This beauty had brought fellow a.netter Martijn (CrimsonNL) back home from YUL earlier in the morning:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06032_zpsa1939db0.jpg

It was now time to head back to the Schengen side to see what was going on there. Not too much of a wait at passport control/security and I was through after 15 minutes without any problems.
A quick look at the FIDS shows a delay of 20 minutes, so for the remainder of the time I head to the end of the B pier. From here I watch one heavy after another arriving on the Kaagbaan (runway 06) and connect to the free WIFI AMS offers.
The WIFI however is very slow due to it being busy in the terminal. I am able to connect to Flightradar24 and follow the inbound. Soon enough I see a SAS A320 gently touch down on runway 06. It is mine and the registration reads OY-KAL. It is an ex Indigo bird flying with SAS since 17/12/2012.
I decide to grab my belongings and slowly head over to the gate (C12). On my way I grab a quick picture of part of the line-up at the C pier, including my A320:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06033_zps57816932.jpg

Once arriving at the gate boarding hasn’t begun yet so I take a quick picture of my aircraft…:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06034_zps3d46c01a.jpg

And grab a seat close to the gate:

Boarding

BP for this flight:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06036_zps02a5b02f.jpg

Boarding is finally announced at 10:30, 35 minutes behind schedule and 5 minutes after original STD. First the families with small children and those needing special assistance, then the biz and status passengers and last but not least, us economy passengers are allowed to board. A long line forms at the economy lane so I remain seated until most of it is gone.
Soon enough the gate agent scans my BP with a smile and wishes me a pleasant flight. I thank her and head into the jetway.

AMS-CPH
SK552 // 23A
A320-232 SAS // OY-KAL
10:55-12:15

Once entering the aircraft I am greeted by a male and female FA in a friendly manner. I head into the aisle and towards my seat 20A. First impression of the cabin is a very good one. Clean, tidy and in excellent condition.
Once reaching my assigned row there is already somebody in the aisle seat (middle seat remains empty). I put my belongings in the overhead bin and take a seat:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06038_zps89fbe29c.jpg

Legroom is good:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06037_zps83551d3a.jpg

Cabin crew consists of 2 males and 2 females, all friendly and getting their jobs done. The doors were eventually closed at 10:45 and the female purser came on the PA welcoming us onboard flight 552 with destination to Copenhagen followed by the usual announcements. Announced flying time is 1 hour. Following the purser is the pilot, also welcoming us onboard and explaining our delay was due to crew problems. While still in position the crew performed the safety demonstration.
With only a half full plane we commence pushback at 10:55, 30 minutes behind schedule. After being released we make the long trek to the Polderbaan also known as 36L:

Take Off

At 11:10, 45 minutes behind schedule we roll onto 36L and start a powerful take-off:

Seatpocket Contents

While still climbing I took a quick look at the seatpocket contents, first the Cloudshop:

In the meantime the crew came around offering complimentary water, tea and coffee. Other drinks and food are for purchase. Once they reached my row I got a coffee which (as some people like to say) hit the spot nicely:

In no time the FO came on the PA announcing our descent into CPH, once again apologizing for the delay and thanking us for flying SAS:

Landing

For final approach to runway 4L:

While being welcomed to CPH we exited 4L and taxied to terminal B:

Atlantic Airways’ fairly new A319 was also in town:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06077_zps420f65b7.jpg

Yes, we are in Kobenhavn!:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06080_zps6f731682.jpg

And in our final parking position at 12:15, half an hour behind schedule. Not a good performance for Europe’s (World’s third) most punctual airline!:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06081_zps8e7ce849.jpg

This little guy came taxiing into gate B4 right after we arrived. Our gate is B6:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06082_zpse9c85ce5.jpg

With the plane only being half full it emptied quite quickly. I grabbed my belongings and headed into the terminal thanking the crew on my way out.

5 Hour Layover..

Having been to CPH many times before there wasn’t much to explore. So during my 5 hour layover I walked around, did some spotting, had something to eat and connected to the provided WIFI. But first one last picture of OY-KAL, getting prepared for its next flight:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC060832_zpsb42b1864.jpg

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06084_zps00b4d64a.jpg

I also went landside for a bit:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06085_zpsd763e78d.jpg

Finnair almost ready to head back to HEL:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06086_zps291fe5a8.jpg

More than enough SAS around (obviously):

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06087_zps62d4bfae.jpg

That Estonian Air livery looks great on the CRJ!:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06088_zpseede8d3b.jpg

I also found this seating area which looks like it used to be a lounge:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06089_zpsc823f244.jpg

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06090_zps21330975.jpg

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06091_zps2a63ae46.jpg

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06092_zps5de8d7b7.jpg

The only downside of this peaceful area was that the WIFI barely worked.
A quick look at the FIDS shows gate B6 is scheduled for this evenings flight to GVA. The same gate I arrived at, as long as I don’t get the same plane!
With only half an hour to go before boarding time I grab a bite to eat and sit next to the window overlooking the B gates, my plane has not arrived yet.
Soon enough I see a SAS A320 heading towards gate B6. I quickly grab my binoculars to check the registration and sure enough it is OY-KAL again, argh. “Nothing’s worse than flying the same reg twice!” as PH puts it nicely.
It is close to boarding time now, so I finish my burger and head towards gate B6. Once arriving there I am greeted with this chaos:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06093_zpsb1e2cd19.jpg

Boarding

BP for this flight:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06036_zps02a5b02f.jpg

Boarding is late and finally starts at 17:02, 17 minutes behind schedule. The doors are opened and everybody swarms towards the jetway, like cattle. No announcements, no priority boarding nothing! I eventually get my BP scanned and head into the jetway.

On Board

22/01/2013
CPH-GVA
SK617 // 20A
A320-232 SAS // OY-KAL
17:23-19:15

At the entrance of the aircraft stands a male and female FA who welcome me on board. I greet them and head into the aisle towards my assigned seat 20A. Once again there is already somebody sitting in the aisle seat (middle seat stays empty). I put by belongings in the overhead bin and get settled in my seat.
Cabin crew once again consists of 2 females and 2 males, they are not the same as my earlier AMS-CPH flight and can best be described as business friendly.
“Boarding completed” is announced at 17:15 and the male purser comes on the PA welcoming us on board flight 617 with destination to Geneva. The usual announcements follow and a short welcome from the pilot. There is no announced flying time and it’s a much better flight load than the previous flight at 90% full.
Pushback commences 8 minutes late, at 17:23. We are swiftly released and taxi to runway 4L, the same runway I arrived at a little over 5 hours ago:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06094_zps4e755746.jpg

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06095_zps350940d7.jpg

Take Off

Once reaching 4L we start take-off immediately and rotate in no time, providing a nice view of CPH at night:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06096_zps133f7e71.jpg

Not too much to say about this flight. The plane is the same and the seatback contents are the same. I keep myself entertained with a DVD on my laptop while regularly taking a look outside. The crew come around offering the complimentary water/tea or coffee and BOB. I decide to buy a coke:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06097_zpse508641f.jpg

The flight passes by quickly and soon enough the FO comes on the PA announcing our descent into GVA and thanking us for flying SAS.

Landing

The approach is nice and smooth and I enjoy looking at all the beautiful lights down below. After a bunch of turns we are eventually on final approach to runway 23. We gently kiss the tarmac at 19:10, 5 minutes ahead of schedule.
The male purser welcomes us to GVA while we exit runway 23 and taxi to the gate. We eventually reach the gate at 19:15, bang on time:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06098_zps14c60634.jpg

The plane slowly empties so I grab my belongings and exit the aircraft thanking the crew on my way out. Next stop is baggage claim where my bag arrives swiftly. I am of no interest to customs so head over to the Europcar car rental desk. From there I call my hotel and ask them to pick me up. The shuttle eventually arrives after 15 minutes and I am brought to my hotel. There is one other person in the shuttle and once we arrive at the hotel he realizes he is in the wrong shuttle!

Novotel Geneve Aeroport France

My hotel for tonight is the Novotel Geneve Aeroport France. Hotel prices were sky high for tonight so I eventually settled with the Novotel as it was the “cheapest” option.
I thank the shuttle driver and head inside. There I am checked in by a friendly receptionist and given my room key which is situated on the 1st floor (out of 1).
There is no elevator here so I drag my suitcases up the stairs and arrive in my room:

The room is in great condition and the bed comfortable. I watch some TV, make use of the provided WIFI and eventually try to get some sleep as I have a very long day ahead of me..

Conclusion

With SAS you (almost) always know what to expect. Flying their “new” A320s was a joy. The cabins look great, clean and in good condition. The crew was nothing special but not bad either. A short delay on the AMS-CPH sector but I didn’t mind as I had a long layover anyway. Boarding at CPH was a bit chaotic and is quite poor IMHO. Nevertheless I had 2 comfortable flights with them and will definitely fly them again in the future (if needed). That is if they survive as they are going through hard times.
CPH is an enjoyable airport. A 5 hour layover was bit too long for my liking as the traffic unfortunately isn’t all too busy and I started to get a bit bored with the WIFI not working correctly.
The Novotel Geneve Aeroport France is an enjoyable hotel to stay at and definitely recommend it if needed.

This will conclude part 1 of this USA trip. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this report and I hope you enjoyed it.
Feel free to leave a comment and ask a question, I would really appreciate that.
Stay tuned for part 2 featuring my GVA-FCO-JFK-ATL flights.

Cheers and take care,

Amsterdamspotter or Brendan Berkhout as known on Facebook.

First impression of the cabin is a very good one. Clean, tidy and in excellent condition.

Sounds good. I recently flew on A319 OY-KBO, first time on a SAS Airbus for me. Legroom was good and they even had an airshow on the overhead screens.

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
Once they reached my row I got a coffee which (as some people like to say) hit the spot nicely:

I also liked SK's coffee.

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
I quickly grab my binoculars to check the registration and sure enough it is OY-KAL again, argh. “Nothing’s worse than flying the same reg twice!” as PH puts it nicely.

So true! Really bad.

With an itinerary like that you could write an entire trip report about the palnning and booking alone! I look forward to reading the rest of the series. I can deduce from that list that you logged a good number of segments on AS/QX. I'm especially excited to see BOI in the list. I don't recall reading any previous TRs featuring a stop in my home state of Idaho.

Hi Brendan,

Good to see another report of you with no lost pics   I kinda like SAS, I've flown a decent set of flights with them and they never let me down in any aspect. Heck, they even serve free water, coffee or tea which makes them even a tad better than my beloved home carrier SN.

Hi Brendan,

Good to finally hear about the trip you took. Interesting to see SAS and CPH as that's on my agenda in June.

And regarding the boarding in CPH - don't you just hate it when there's no order at all - similar experience to what I had in ATL last week, although at least initially the ground crew did attempt to control the chaos. They quickly gave up though!

Looking forward to the future parts - should keep us entertained for a while!

Very nice report, and one crazy travel-itinerary. Funny that you connect in CPH to GVA, I always prefer AMS when connecting to a flight in Europe. I cant stand the busy terminal at CPH. Last time at CPH when I flew MLA-CPH-BGO on DY back in october last year, the only seats I could find was the room formerly used as a lounge.

Looking forward to the next report

Hi Brendan,

That is quite some trip you planned, what an amazing itinerary! It is sure going to make for a very interesting set of reports.

I've never flown SAS before or even been to CPH, so this was a nice insight for me. Great to see they now offer free water, tea and coffee.

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
It all started with Alitalia, where I booked an open jaw GVA-FCO-JFK-ATL-JFK-VCE for the grand total price of 149EUR (more on this in part 2

Well done for snatching one of those crazy fares, a bargain indeed.

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):

Well, I've seen enough snow for this year. I hope there isn't going to be too much snow in the rest of your reports, it makes me shiver

That Estonian Air livery looks great on the CRJ!:

That Estonian livery would look great on an old bathtub

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
I also found this seating area which looks like it used to be a lounge:

Good spot of yours, it looks like you had some peace & quiet there.

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
The doors are opened and everybody swarms towards the jetway, like cattle.

Yep, sounds like a flight for Switzerland....!

There is one other person in the shuttle and once we arrive at the hotel he realizes he is in the wrong shuttle!

Looking forward to the next installments and it was great to finally meet you earlier this month!

Happy flying

Good to say the other USA trip getting started.

Just been to CPH myself a few weeks back, and it's a nice airport for sure... Maybe not in certain parts... Anyway, I still have a soft spot for AMS, but CPH seems more 'comfortable'. I really like their plushy seating areas.

Quite possibly the best itenary i've seen from all the trip reports i've read, incredible.

I've yet to get round to trying SAS out yet but it's good to see they are still going strong despite all the difficulties they have been experiencing.

Like i said though great first part, sets up the US parts nicely which i'm looking forward too!

Hi Brendan!

Thanks for a great report with great pictures !

Too bad it didn't work for us to meet up. KL doesn't accept paper tickets for non-revs anymore and nobody had told me....I flew UA to EWR in C instead. I'll be in AMS again in the not too distant future.

It would have been interesting to see more pictures of the inside of the SK 320. Too bad you got the same one for both flights.....Not very good boarding for the second flight.

I still don't understand why the bother with those small soda cans on European carriers; such a small bottle and just a lot of aluminum rather than content if you add them altogether....Also no cash deposit refund for the small can as indicated on the bottle. US carriers do recycle soda cans and get quite a bit of money back on that every year. Not to mention it's good to recycle the can.....

Looking forward to the next part in this series!

Need a Boeing 777 Firing Order....Further to fly....CI, MU, LX and LH 777s
