Hi everybody, here's the second and final installment of my trip to Australia in March 2013. This part will include spotting pictures from the actual trip itself, unlike the last one which just included the flights down under!

As some of you read about in my previous report, my lens used for spotting (my Nikkor 55-300) was severely damaged on the way to Australia  . I thought my spotting was ruined, but thanks to a wonderful man named Bernie Proctor, that was not the case. I stayed in contact throughout the trip with him, and he was able to obtain a Sigma 55-500mm lens for me! He also is the one who took me to all the spotting locations in SYD, something I couldn't have done by myself, especially in a country totally foreign to me. So, thanks a lot Bernie!!

I'll start with a few pictures taken at SYD during the first of our two spotting trips, on March 18th, 2013.

Bernie had to tell me about all these little airlines here down under, because I had never heard of these! Here's an example of the local Brindabella Airlines!

Not Spirit of Australia, but "The Spirit of the Australian Team". Boxing Kangaroo was one of the many special liveries we saw today! We were very lucky, according to Bernie.

We checked in, and went up to the viewing deck at SYD with Bernie. Here are some shots taken there, while Bernie was showing me the basic features of "Lightroom", which was a very cool program!  http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0545_zps0519847f.jpg

It was pretty cool to fly on the longest route for one of the most historic aircraft like the 747, which has had so many breakthroughs in aviation history. We then started boarding QF #7, non-stop service to DFW!

Airline: QANTAS Airways
Flight Number: QF #7
Aircraft: Boeing 747-438/ER
Registration: VH-OEH "Hervey Bay"
Seat: 62K
Flight Duration: 14 Hours, 52 Minutes
Route: Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport (SYD/YSSY) -- Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport (DFW/KDFW)

Taken before walking into the jetbridge!

You can read the "AS" in "QANTAS"  http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0585_zpsb5a6dcc8.jpg

Taken while walking past a galley on the LONG 747-400ER!
http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0586_zps5fc72297.jpg

I relaxed in my seat in the "Green Zone" of the beast. I was relieved to see that it was a refurbed 744ER, nice job QF  http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0588_zps10584384.jpg

Free, old-style headphones provided by QF
http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0592_zpsd287a998.jpg

I could tell already that this was going to be a great flight onboard one of my most favorite aircraft in the world! The captain came on the PA, and welcomed us aboard, stating that our flying time would be approximately 15 hours. The only thing lacking in the 744 was the remote for "iQ", but that was no problem for me. Other than that, I found it to be quite comfortable, and as good as the A380.
http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0592_zpsd287a998.jpg

We pushed back! I was very excited, and eager for it to shatter my previous record for my longest flight (set 4 days earlier on QF #12, LAX-SYD, 14:26)  http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0594_zps105adea9.jpg

This kind of revolving map/info was not as good on the A380, or so I felt:
http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0646_zps8ca53da8.jpg

We then taxied by a gorgeous BA 747, G-CIVE. I flew this exact aircraft 8 years earlier, in November 2005 on BA#57, LHR-JNB. That was back when I was only 8 years old, and I still remember how fantastic that flight was!!  http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0595_zpsce7a3da3.jpg

Ha! He's not as good as us (not a ER model)  http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0599_zps74e347ac.jpg

The QF OneWorld 744 looks FANTASTIC in person  http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0600_zpsbd947ef6.jpg

SQ, EY, and VA, all with flights longer than at least 6 hours ahead of them!
http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0605_zps5363f62c.jpg

Bernie told us earlier to open and close our shutter many times, so we did that! Even with my small 18-55 lens, you can barely make him out in the right side of the picture!!  http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0609_zpsab9384fe.jpg

The wonderful "Autoplay" feature on the map:

Once we had no more interesting things to look outside at except for the Pacific Ocean, I watched a very intersting, short documentary on QF.

Good! We still have LONG way to go.
http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0657_zpsfe29d96a.jpg

I played around with this feature a lot, as you can tell  http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0659_zps73f1bbad.jpg

Dinner was then served! I chose the beef over the chicken. It turns out both were good, as my mom loved the chicken as well. Sadly, I forgot to take a picture of the food with the foil open  .
http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0660_zpsa5fde878.jpg

I then took a walk around the luxurious 747!

Great movie, "The Social Network". I had always wanted to see it, and I finally did, thanks to QF's fantastic IFE.

I tried to get a decent shot of the wing, with (somewhat) moderate success.

One of the perks of the refurbished 747-400ERs are the stocked refreshment bars!!

This flight is going by too fast for my liking....  http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0696_zps5281909c.jpg

While waiting in line for the lavaratory, I stumbled on the crew rest area door being open. I can't say how tempted I was to take a quick peek... But instead I told the F/A and he closed it before I could ask for one  .

When you're thoroughly enjoying something why does it have to go by fast...  http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0702_zps75fe957e.jpg

I said it earlier, but QF's entertainment system deserves multiple compliments!  http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0718_zps9dfda95c.jpg

Our huge wing and winglets with some heavy cloud cover below:
http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0719_zpsf33b9775.jpg

I got into a chat with a F/A, who looked like a chef, since he had an apron on the whole flight. He told me that QF hand-picks the crew for this flight, since it is the longest that QF operates and the 3rd longest in the world. I asked him approximately how old the aircraft was, and I said "Well, lets see, I'll have to look up the registration first". I then cut in and said, "Oh, it's VH-OEH". He said "Oh, so we've got a pretty smart airplane enthusiast here! Would you like any souvenirs?"
Needless to say, I graciously accepted!!  http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0720_zps0ac822aa.jpg

Looks like the cloud cover has passed.

Another feature of the 744ERs over the A380. This very handy storage compartment, as well as one below. Very helpful!!

Slowly starting to decend. I remember the announcement by the captain:

Awesome report mate,

Just a quick question, on the QF website, they say that ''On selected international flights, you’ll be treated to a continuous refreshment service every 60-90 minutes and, to add variety, a third main meal option for long haul flights"... Can you confirm if this is the case for the QF7 service? I experienced it on QF15 9 months ago, and was so impressed by the continuous rounds of snacks on offer... I had never experienced anything like it prior to that flight. It makes the flight so much more enjoyable as not only are you getting continuous snacks and drinks, it actually allows the flight crew to interact more with the passengers on the flight...

Another feature of the 744ERs over the A380. This very handy storage compartment, as well as one below. Very helpful!!

I think the one below is the hammock to put your feet in... makes for a pretty comfy flight.

http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0796_zps57cf3b37.jpg

Once we cleared baggage claim, here we are in the unsecured area of DFW's Terminal D.
http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0803_zps1aa959d7.jpg

I came back and saw "Hervey Bay", after he had been pushed back from Gate D11. I saw a kid about my age sitting there with his mom, gawking at it. I got into a conversation with him, and he had come to DFW for the day for spotting! He had flown in from TUL that morning, and was going to fly back to TUL that afternoon. I found that to be pretty cool.
He asked me where I was coming from, and I simply pointed at VH-OEH. He was so jealous!  http://i1298.photobucket.com/albums/ag41/SYDDFWreturn/DSC_0809_zps380637f8.jpg

Soon, the view of "Hervey Bay" was cut off by an equally majestic aircraft, a BA 747-436 coming in as BA#193 from LHR. I flew the return, BA#192, last June on my trip to India. I have a TR on that too!

That's the last picture of the trip!

My review: The 747 was FANTASTIC. It was good to fly on a 747 with no more old seats and small (or no) PTVs. I'm very glad that, with this aircraft and a few others, I think the -400 and -400ER models will last a bit longer than I thought they would.

My verdict: The QANTAS 747-438/ER>The QANTAS A380-800.
Many might disagree, but to me this was no contest. The bigger windows, the better "Autoplay" feature.... There was nothing lacking in the 747 that made the flight less comfortable, and on the contrary, there was many more features.

Also, it was cool to end the trip on a flight on one of AA's new livery planes. I had only seen one up to that point, and I think I am very lucky to have flown on one!

Thanks for reading, and as always, comments are welcome and appreciated.

Yes, I found it to be pretty good. In the menu picture I have along with the breakfast, you can see that there were three menu options for dinner. Two were non-vegetarian, and one was vegetarian.

About the snacks, I only noticed two snack rounds done by the F/As, but this might be because the refreshments bar was always back there on my flight. Did your 744 on QF 15 have the refreshment bar?

Hi Kann123air,

What a fantastic trip report!. Great to see you enjoyed your visit in Sydney and thanks for sharing the awesome pictures from your planespotting session in SYD.

VH-OEH was the same plane that brought me to BNE a few months ago and I have to say it is a great bird. Coincidentally I noticed that I had took some pictures from the same position as yours in the aircraft.

One of the perks of the refurbished 747-400ERs are the stocked refreshment bars!!

Is the 747-400ER snack bars at the rear of the aircraft? When I was flying this bird I guess I was too tired to move around and even notice there's one snack bar onboard. Great feature for a long haul flight especially!

Your breakfast look great. I had similar breakfast on a PER - MEL flight September last year on QF 480 if I'm not mistaken, it was great as well.

It was also great to see you on board an aircraft with the new AA livery back to XNA. It was a really beautiful livery that I hope to see with my own eyes one day.

Thanks a lot for sharing!

Great Report!

I agree with you that the terminal here at XNA is very very nice. A couple weeks ago my XNA-LGA flight on American Eagle was delayed by 2 1/2 hours so I had way to much time to wander around. Did you ride the only moving sidewalk in the state of Arkansas? I thought that the chess and checkers games were a great idea, I had too much fun moving the big pieces around.

I agree too that the new AA livery is great. When I flew back into XNA on an old livery Eagle ERJ recently there was a new colors CR7 at the gate next to mine... looks so much better in person I have to say.

Thank you for an excellent trip report. SYD is a great airport for spotting. Because of it's location, there are many ultra long haul flights coming and going. Most airlines do fly there. You took some excellent shots near the runway. Is that place open to the public?
I have only flown QF 747-400 LAX-SYD-LAX and that was in 1999 and 2000. I also flew NZ LAX-SYD on a 747-400. I found the services on both airlines to be excellent. The QF people were very accomodating and I was able to visit the cockpit in flight. On a SYD-LAX flight I was up there for several hours and I could watch the sunrise from the cockpit. Sadly, cockpit visits inflight are a thing of the past. That was nice that the captain let you up there after you landed.
QF usually flies these flights with a captain, first officer and 2 second officers. The flight into DFW is their longest, like you said but on the return flight it has to stop in BNE. I have heard of them having to make fuel stops on several occasions.
QF overall is an excellent airline. It sounds like you had a great trip on them.

Interesting that your QF7 flight didn't overfly Mexican airspace. I looked on flightaware and it seems a-lot of the flights do overfly Mexican airspace in-bound to DFW and on QF8 going back. I wonder why yours didn't. I guess it all comes down to costs and the flight plan.

Ah man I was really looking forward to this TR! You can either pay for more bandwidth, or host your pics elsewhere -not sure if flickr has limited bandwidth or not - maybe ask your friend? Facebook has worked for me before too.

I opened another account on photobucket so that I could have more pictures added.... Maybe this has to do with it? This is quite a disappointment!

Looks like the bandwidth problem is gone now, so if anyone's still interested, the pictures are now available again!

Excellent report, brought back memories of my own QF7 experience back in July 2011, funnily enough on OEH as well.
Seems the aircraft's had a bit of a facelift since my flight, no such luck with the new systems. What was the flight like in terms of weather? Turbulence at all? We had a fair bit over the Pacific, not much fun. Also, could you link me to Part 1 of your report? Cheers!

That's the seatback of 66K back in 2011, you had it good!

Hi kann123air,

Thanks for this report. I have to say- you are one of the few people I know who wished that the SYD-DFW flight was longer. It looks like QF Y is a great international product, and that the 747 product has gone down well. It was also good to see how well the QF crew accommodated your needs- a visit to the upper deck and cockpit being no problem.

As was previously requested, do you have a link to Part 1 as I somehow missed it?

Thanks,

themit9

Pretty smooth, I don't remember anything noteworthy.

I know! It was my first time going up to the cockpit in a 747 after so many flights in it with so many different airlines....
