Tá áthas ar Aer Lingus fáilte ar bord a chur romhat / Aer Lingus is delighted to welcome you on board.

Hello all and welcome to my latest TR . I decided to pop down to Malaga for a night as Aer Lingus have commenced their Summer timetable using the A330 in between USA runs. Due to being Elite status with Aer Lingus I got seated in the Premier section for free. This was a saving of EUR150. Basically Aer Lingus sell it as Y service J seat.

I booked and selected my seats and also pre booked the new meals. I was looking forward to seeing what they were like. Oddly enough the Irish breakkast was not pre bookable on this 7am service !

So it was an early start. I took the airport bus at 0330am which got me to the airport just over an hour later.

I went to the Gold Circle desk which was empty and was greeted by a very friendly check in agent.

What I was really impressed with was her personal touch :

''Philip you have been pre assigned 4K is that ok for you ? ''

Me: ''Yes thanks thats fine''

''Enjoy Malaga and have a good flight''

Me: '' Thanks its supposed to be 23c today ''

''Thanks for that   Bring some of it back with you ''

I smiled and thanked her and made my way to security.

Fast Track was not busy at all and in a few minutes I was though. The chocolate lounge opens at 5am and the Aer Lingus GC lounge opens at 0515am so I had 15-20 mins to kill. I decided to take a walk to the gate area.

I just love the selection they have. I dont think Ive had the same muffin twice. There is always something new to try.

Shortly boarding commenced and boarding was by seat row and not by zone. Gold Circle members were invited to board at their leisure.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/EIAGP/file_zps1dacc72b.jpg

I was greeted at the door by two friendly FAs and directed to the left into the Premier cabin.

First impressions were good. Clean , bright and airy. Pretty standard of todays average J class product. Angled flat beds.

During boarding I saw an RTE camera crew enter the cabin. Shortly a few people from EI were talking to the crew and I heard them say that they would be trialing the new wifi out on this flight and handing out free passes to Premier seated passengers. Also it was mentioned that RTE would be filming a piece for broadcast about the new service. I was quite excited at this stage as I was looking forward to testing this out.

An FA came around the cabin afterwards and handed out laminated cards about the wifi service and also a free wifi pass. Just then a lady came and addressed me by name and sat next to me. She was from EI PR dept and asked if I might be interested in doing an interview for RTE. I actually was quite tired and didnt look my best so I politely declined which she understood. I did say that I was pleased EI were introducing this service and also on shorthaul too.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/EIAGP/file_zpsa4ed1756.jpg

Then the doors were closed and we were ready to push back from the gate.

We were airbourne very quickly. A light load today around 50% full down the back and a few in Premier cabin.

Soon the IFE came on and it was good to see they were going to offer the same experience as you get on the TATL service. Head sets however were EUR5 in all classes. I had my iPhone earphones and this actually worked despite the three pin socket so I used those.

Free wifi pass. I have to say on a TATL EUR19.95 for all you can eat data is pretty good.

The connection was easy and as I discovered the wifi was fast around 7MB. I didnt use the mobile network which you can use for SMS. Phone calls are disabled. I wanted to try a third party App like BT Talk or Skype but forgot. Im wondering if you could get around the phone calls embargo that way .

Another passenger had agreed to be interviewed so the RTE crew were getting ready.

Soon the cabin crew came around with BOB service. I was asked if I would like anything and I told them I had already pre booked. It seems that reports of crew actively handing out the pre booked meals first is not consistant. Once I however mentioned it they did see it on a sheet and I was handed my meal along with a free drink.

I decided to play with the IFE a bit more.

After that I had a very nice conversation with the lady from PR and aired some of my constructive comments about the GC program to which she was very appreciative and open and honest about. There was another issue which I raised and was promised it would be passed on and I would get a follow up phone call about it. I thanked her for her time and really felt that she took on board my comments. Its always nice when an airline listens to its customers.

So soon it was time to go back to the hotel. I later popped to a Turkish kebab cafe opposite the hotel which I have to say was lovely. I then headed back to get some sleep .

The next morning I set the alarm and then checked out of the hotel. I took the bus to the airport which the stop was just opposite the hotel so very handy .

Soon I arrived at AGP .

Ei - ELA is Aer Lingus's newest in the fleet being just 3 years old. I had checked on the inbound from DUB and so knew what Reg it would be so I was quite happy. A new Reg for me.

Soon boarding was announced. The usual Med scrum began to form with no obvious queue. No GC pre boarding so I made my way to the agent at the side and showed my GC card to which I was promptly invited to board. Seems the name of the game here.

Soon boarding was completed. 70% full down the back and more this time in Premier section. Most were older retired Irish who I presume were either checking out their second homes or regulars. They seemed to know the crews.

During the safety demo there was what I can only describe as a firey red headed FA who didnt smile at all. She certainly gave the impression that she was one not to be messed with . Who needs Air Marshalls   She kept looking over at me too so I decided not to document the safety demo just in case

I have to say I thought it was lovely and well prepared. I not sure if I prefer the roast beef or this they were equally good and for EUR7.50 I thought it was good value. The beef on the outward had come with horseraddish sauce which I love with beef. I hate it when its missing so was pleased they remembered it.

So we pulled up on stand and I disembarked thanking the crew for a nice flight.

One last look at St. Patrick  http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/EIAGP/file_zps61d43523.jpg

Immigration was fast and I was from aircraft to bus stop in less than 10 minutes.

So thats the end of my report. I hope you all enjoyed and will leave a comment if you did

Aer Lingus provided a good experience as usually is the case. The outward was a more enjoyable flight due to the wifi trial and RTE filming. It made for something different. its great that they use this aircraft down to AGP and it wont be my last trip . Its a really pleasant way to get to the sun for a few days or more. I woud gladly pay the EUR150 fee for Premier seating if I was not getting it for free. The meals were good too for the price paid.

From check in to landing and back home again nothing to complain about. Im looking forward to the roll out of wifi on shorthaul also. Will be interesting to see the pricing levels. Also the contention ratio can effect speeds depending on how many are using it so it will be interesting to see what its like in a real situation.

Kind regards

OA260 / Philip

Hola Philip!

Another nice story with this new aircraft down to AGP.

The new cabins look really nice and the service on board seems to live up to expectations. If I understood correctly, it means that the 150€ only buys you the seat, no food included... too bad, IMO; they should add it to the service. I think it would make it more C-class like.

The new Terminal 3 at AGP seems a great area, I have only been to the old one, some years ago, it seems it is used by FR and EZ and other LCC. Good to know.

Málaga is indeed a nice city and it is always worth a visit, next time be sure to pay a visit to the Picasso Museum they opened some years ago, a great building with some interesting paintings. BTW, we had a great cruise yesterday visiting BCN, the Liberty of the Seas, impressive. There are 7 others today, not that we are short of any. In case you are interested: http://www.portdebarcelona.cat/en/web/port-del-ciudada/cruceros

Just a little criticism, if you allow me, how on Earth can you go to Taco Bell when in Málaga? Man, you are loosing your Mediterranean taste   Ai,ai,ai...

Salut,

Roger

Yes but I guess they know they can maximise revenue with the seats and then BOB. I got the ticket for EUR135 so even with EUR150 on top it would only be EUR285 which is good value . Meals and drinks were only an extra EUR7.50 each way .

Hi WIll and thanks for the reply

Yes T2 really has upped the game at DUB . Its such a nice place to fly through and into . Im lucky to be able to use it often . Chocolate lounge is always something to look forward to before the flight. Ive been going since day one and know all the staff. I even have a loyalty card

I agree its a shame that those flights dont pre clear. Its apparantly due to US CBP staff work restrictions. Im sure someone else can throw a more in depth answer for you .

Thanks again

Hi Philip

Great trip report, as always!

I would be more than happy to pay for wifi on a long haul flight. I don't watch much TV or films but I don't spend more time on the net that I perhaps should. If I could do that on a long haul flight it would help to make the journey go more quickly.

I have never been to Malaga but looks like lots of smart shopping.

Hi Phil,

Excellent report as always!

Aer Lingus's A330 looks amazing! How new are the cabins? I should have flown them when I had the chance!

The BOB meals you ordered looked to be of very high standard, but that is to be expected from BOB   In the US, it may seem unconventional that all the legacy airlines have BOB service on their domestic runs, but to be honest, i think this has greatly improved the quality of the food offered. If i was hungry, i wouldn't mind forking a little more for a better meal.

A very nice gesture from Aer Lingus that they actually followed up on your comments, thanks to the very loyal PR employee you met on your flight. I actually wonder why GCB hasn't been incorporated into EY Guest! I think it would make sense given the relationship and the fact that EI is not aligned to any of the major alliances! What do you think?

Many thanks for sharing this with us! And thanks for the great pictures of Malaga too!

Cheers,
Roni

I love the new cabins. Even in Y they are decent. If I had to make one point it would be the IFE comedy channels. They were all American and just 2 Irish . I would have personally liked to see a few British ones also. Since Irish and British TV is very much linked you find most Irish watch the British comedies and TV too. Just a personal observation. With the upgraded meals in Y TATL for a small supp. its really improving. Although J is angled which is not my favourite I guess for a short hop DUB-JFK its ok . I do prefer the TK J seat though. Once you have non angled you get spoilt. If EI go back to the West Coast then they may need to look at an upgrade.

Yes and I forgot to mention that on Friday I had a call from them and they resolved the issue and told me if there is anything else I need I should contact that person directly so I was very impressed on the follow through.

I also agree with you on the EY link . Similar to what they have with AB . I think it will come but we may need to wait a bit more. It certainly makes sense. It would give the program the boost it needs. With so many Irish using EI and EY it would benefit alot of people.

Yes if you pay to pre book them and add the better meal and wiifi its a nice little DIY Y +   Certainly not bad at all for a bit extra.

Hello Philip!

Great report!
I am following your reports for about 2 years now, and I always like them, but I finally signed up in anet in april, so, finally I now can begin to comment reports! I espacially liked your (many) SWISS Business reports to ATH!
The Aerlingus seats in their Business Class, or Premium seating on hollyday flights looks very good, in my opinion even better than those of LH. Also the BoB product of EI looks very good!
I also liked the impressions of Malaga. I've never been there, but maybe will come to this place someday...

Thanks again for this TR!

I had no idea that the BOS and ORD flights were not US pre-clearance? I wonder why? I have only flown DUB-JFK and DUB-ATL and it was so nice to pre-clear!

The CBP issue is staffing levels, they can only handle so many flights in the 0700-1500 shift period. So EI had to prioritise their JFK flights with the move to T5. I'm told that EI have not been happy with this situation for at elast a year. Their expecting selling point by being in T2 has not materialised due to US Govt refusal to increase staff numbers.

Its certainly a shame that its not being used to its full potential. Hopefully that will change. Its seems that they want to expand to other countries so I wonder if that will effect Ireland in terms of CBP expansion ?

Hi Phil!

Good to see this nice review of a widebody intra-Europe EI flight. This one sould certainly be of interest to us a.netters, with or without the wifi. A good move of EI to provide this service, although I find the price setting a bit on the steep side. I can't really tell if I would use it on longhaul. They better introduce internet on the seatback I think and that goes for other airlines as well.
That premium cabin looks very nice. Is there a 'real' business class' on board as well?

It seems that reports of crew actively handing out the pre booked meals first is not consistant. - Based on the return flight they really are lacking consistancy, how difficult is it to check the sheet before service?

Both meals looked good, value wise spot on IMO.

Great report Philip!

The Aer Lingus A330s look in good form and the addition of wifi was always going to be a good move, especially for Business Class which is still looking on good form, it's a good product for the Irish transatlantic routes. I think nearly €20 is a little bit steep for economy but that's not saying I wouldn't try it myself.

The new pre-order meals are great quality and value, tried the beef recently and was impressed. Bit strange that the breakfast wasn't available but maybe they don't have the ability to have that many for an A330 load, is it possible it would be too popular!

Malaga looks lovely, would never have expected to see a Taco Bell though, can't find them in many places around here.

Thanks for sharing this report, looking forward to the next one!

The wifi seemed pretty pricey to me considering I paid around $5 for it on AA last week - that lasted the length of the flight.

I'm in agreement with you about the marina area of Malaga - I had a great meal there on my visit.

Oddly enough the Irish breakkast was not pre bookable on this 7am service !

Shame! Irish breakfast would have been a great start of the day!

I took the airport bus at 0330am

Seriously? An airport bus run at 0330 am?

''Thanks for that   Bring some of it back with you ''

Sweet!

What if The Chocolate Lounge would collaborate with EI GC Lounge?

I have to say on a TATL EUR19.95 for all you can eat data is pretty good.

Indeed an interesting deal!

After a while I got chatting to one of the FA's who was lovely. She was telling me all about her work and funny stories. We had some laughs and it was a pleasure to meet her.

That’s more I like it! Quality times with FA’s!

Quoting OA260 (Reply 5):
No GC pre boarding so I made my way to the agent at the side and showed my GC card to which I was promptly invited to board.

Can you imagine anyone else without GC card trying to follow your example but to no avail?

Thank you for sharing another marvelous experience!

Have a nice weekend!

Hi Phillip,

Great report as usual! What a nice idea to fly the EI A330 down to Malaga (and the much warmer climate), an ever greater idea to get yourself in a J seat too! As you know I booked my first flights with Aer Lingus in September and very much looking forward to it

cheers,

Brendan
