This flight was the first leg of my trip from Darwin to London Via SYD, was going to do a trip report for the whole lot but got tired and didnt bother, perhaps on the return

I had booked a last minute ish trip to London from Darwin, flight options are rather limited, SQ are now the only carrier offering one stop flights since QF stopped flying via Singapore. The cheapest option was on BA connecting via SYD with Qantas. The outbound was rather painful involving the red eye to Sydney and a 9 hour wait.

25th April 2013
QF829 DRW-SYD (01:45-06:35)
Boeing 737-800 (W)

I ordered a taxi on a typically muggy Darwin night for 12:30 arriving an hour prior at 12:45, The terminal seemed quiet, with no line at Qantas checkin. The agent was fairly friendly checkin me and my bag through to London.

A quiet drop off area

Qantas Checkin

Went through security to the airside lounge, wow packed, never seen the terminal so busy, people everywhere, sitting on the floor, standing...all for 3 flights: VA 738 to BNE, JQ 320 to SYD and QF 738 to SYD.

Rammed lounge, people everywhere...really needs expanding

Arrivals and departures...lots of redeyes from DRW

I got a drink and waited for boarding to start, eventually it was and everyone boarded fairly quick for such a full flight, load factor was 95%. I had a window seat in row 27.
I was hoping for a new 738 with AVOD, but sadly wasnt to be.

Jetstar A320 also heading to SYD with white tail of an A340-300 also SYD bound.

QF 717s, Airnorth E120s and E170s as well Alliance F70 on stand.

After a few minutes pushback started and we made our way for the 10minute taxi to the active. There was 3 flights departing to syd in the space of 20mins. JQ A320 five minutes before us, my flight and a charter A340-300 following us.

Late running VA 738 from BNE.

A fairly sluggish take off and climbed to our initial altitude of 35000 feet (i think), a drink and nut bar were handed out before the crew disappeared until breakfast was served. Qantas crews are generally very good, but a couple of drinks runs would have been good. A movie was shown on the screen and lights turned off for the 4 hour flights down. I generally tried to snooze and close my eyes.

Dark Cabin

Got bumpy towards Sydney but nothing too bad, lights were cruelly turned on, everyone groans. breakfast was given out, uptake was limited with most people staying asleep. I took it and only had the juice and muffin, dont really feel like eating at 5am.

Beautiful flight over the pacific.

After slowing down and flying over the pacific we were gradually routed towards finals, touching down smoothly just before 6:30.

A fairly standard qantas flight, but the breakfast was poor, a hot offering would be better , they have a much better meal on the day flights, and AVOD on the longer flights would be good, i know its slowly getting there.

Oh, the infamous Aussie red-eye. I did PER-OOL on JQ last month and it absolutely killed me!

Great trip report.

Thanks for the report !

I didn't realise there was so much activity at DRW after midnight. I'm not familiar with DRW ops, but I'm surprised DRW-SIN and then connecting on the BA service SIN-LHR didn't end up cheaper than DRW-SYD-SIN-LHR given the significant amount of backtracking. At least that way, any wait at the airport would've been at the much more bearable SIN than SYD's intl terminal. Did you get the chance to pop into the city whilst in SYD given the large gap between your flights?

I flew a redeye from DRW to MEL in 2003 on a 734. They served a cold dinner immediately after takeoff. No breakfast. I think that is better
