Intro
Back in May 2012, I missed a Wizz Air flight from London/Luton to Gdansk because I had been stranded in Singapore (more details can be found here). After explaining the situation and sending some documents, the low-cost carrier transferred the amount paid for that flight as a credit for future travels to my Wizz Air account. However, the credit was only valid until yearend, so I decided to use it on a trip to Romania in September.

The main targets were Carpatair and its Saab 2000 on the Munich-Timisoara route, though. And I tried to include a flight on Tarom as well so that I would get three new airlines. The Romanian national carrier offers late evening flights from Bucharest to numerous domestic destinations, mostly operated by ATRs, but also 737s and A318s, so there were many options to choose from. Finally, I decided to fly Munich-Timisoara-Bucharest on Carpatair and Bucharest-Cluj/Napoca on Tarom. I had picked CLJ for the night stop because I could book a well-timed onward flight to Dortmund on Wizz Air on the next day, plus a Dortmund-Munich flight on Germanwings. Surprisingly, the equipment on the short Tarom flight turned out to be an A318 - not a new type for me, but definitely more interesting than an ATR.

I booked all flights on the carriers' websites which was easy and convenient in any case. After the itinerary had been completed, I was looking forward to three new airlines and four new airports.  thumbsup

Checking in online wasn't possible for flights from Munich, but I had been able to select my seats during the booking process (free of charge, btw). When I arrived at the check-in area, there was no need to queue up and I quickly got my boarding passes.

My plane arrived on time - it turned out to be YR-SBE, built in 1996:

Boarding commenced as planned and a bus brought us to the long desired Saab 2000 which is a nice looking aircraft in my opinion. Powered by Rolls Royce:

YR-SBE has recently been retired (fleet down to four frames) and is intended for Darwin Airlines:

Interesting perspective:

The cabin was equipped with dark blue leather seats and seemed to be in good shape:

I found the seat rather comfortable...

...and legroom was absolutely sufficient, too:

Just behind the wing, perfect location:

I found the noise level on the Saab 2000 more pleasant than on modern ATRs or Dashs - both on the ground and in the air. That's what I had already noticed on the Saab 340.

5B-DCG is the newest A320 in the Cyprus Airways fleet:

British Airways A319 in "Dove" colors plus a regular frame:

Rossiya A319 and Etihad A330:

Unfortunately, the flight attendant noticed that I was taking pictures during taxi and asked me to turn off my camera. Well, of course I agreed.  Wink

Airborne:

Thick clouds ahead...

That looked much better:

A Romanian English-language newspaper was offered shortly after takeoff:

Safety card:

Inflight magazine and shopping guide:

The former's most interesting page - no complaints this time:

Since September 2012, two Saabs have been retired, all Fokker 70s have left the fleet and two ATR 72-500s have joined the fleet. One of the latter made a crash landing at Rome in February, unfortunately, while operating for Alitalia.

Cool stuff on offer in the shopping magazine:

Carpatair serves drinks and snacks free of charge, except for alcoholic beverages:

The friendly flight attendant soon distributed tasty sandwiches (ham, cheese & lettuce on tomato bread) and offered various drinks:

After I had ordered a (tasty) black tea, she asked whether I'd also like a cold drink. So I ordered an orange juice and then she asked: "Do you need anything else? One more meal?" Very attentive!  thumbsup

Very nice scenery:

Quite healthy load:

You don't need to fly First Class on certain carriers to get a loo with a view:

Only a few more minutes to go:

It soon started raining, so it was impossible to take decent pictures during landing. Welcome to Timisoara Airport:

Can you imagine that these airlines are partners?

After arriving in the small terminal building, I quickly realized that there wasn't much to do in the crowded central airside area. So I went straight to the domestic departure gate area - where you can only find a limited number of seats and only one bathroom (one cabin!) for each gender:

At least I could follow the aircraft movements:

Carpatair's one and only 737-300:

Boarding commenced rather early, but I certainly didn't mind. YR-SBE had left a while ago, so I was looking forward to a new registration. It turned out to be YR-SBJ:

Once again, I received a friendly welcome at the door. The interior of the plane was identical, but there were less passengers on board this time. Interestingly, I was surrounded by a few Carpatair pilots and cabin crew members.

The apron was rather deserted now:

Climbout over large fields:

Carpatair also serves free drinks and snacks on domestic hops:

Nice scenery:

Large industrial park:

Outskirts of Bucharest:

And here's the airport:

We made a wide left turn and approached the airport from the East - but now I was facing the sun and couldn't take decent pictures. On the way to the parking position:

One of Tarom's A310s which is leased out to the government:

Nice line-up of Tarom 737s:

We came to a stop next to Air Bucharest's one and only aircraft:

Goodbye, YR-SBJ:

After arriving in the terminal, I quickly found out that it wasn't possible to stay in transit. I had already checked in online and printed the boarding pass for my Tarom flight, but the domestic departure area was in a separate section and I had to leave the airside zone.

When I tried to pass security at the domestic concourse, an unfriendly female officer refused entry after checking my boarding pass. I insisted that I was having a valid boarding pass, but it was pointless. Her English was very limited and I started assuming that it simply wasn't possible yet to go to the domestic gates. A police officer finally confirmed exactly that and explained that access would be possible two hours or so before departure. Since the few domestic evening departures leave within a period of about an hour, this policy makes sense, I guess.

The main terminal building:

Spotting wasn't possible in the public area and there wasn't much else to do either. I was glad when I could finally pass security and head to my gate.

The dated domestic concourse with its basic interior wasn't a great place to be either. The area with four gates was getting crowded and I couldn't believe that - once again - there was only one run-down and unkempt bathroom (one cabin!) for each gender.  thumbsdown

Fortunately, boarding commenced early. I was glad that the bus stopped next to an A318 - no last minute aircraft change. YR-ASC is one of four frames in the fleet:

All the flight attendants I had to pass appeared unfriendly, no smiles anywhere. My seat was rock hard...

...but legroom was acceptable for this short hop:

The cabin remained half empty and I had the whole row to myself. Announcements were hard to understand due to the cabin crew member's voice speed and strong accent. At least I could understand that the flying time would be 35 minutes. Oh, and one flight attendant told me to stop taking pictures. Of course I stopped doing so...for a while.  Wink

We left the parking position early and turned onto the runway a few minutes later. However, the safety video (black and white only on the nearest screen) was still running and some flight attendants were still moving around in the cabin. That was rather interesting, hadn't seen that before. Finally, the A318 powerfully accelerated and climbed out into the night sky.

Safety card:

Inflight magazine:

Unbelievable, but true - I couldn't find any mistakes here either:

Another magazine:

Shortly after takeoff, I was surprised to get peanuts and a refreshing towel:

Drinks followed shortly afterwards - I ordered orange juice:

Of course I was glad that Tarom even provided a moving map:

The flight was even shorter than estimated and we touched down hard after a flying time of 33 minutes. Cabin shot during disembarking:

Not even five minutes after leaving the plane, I stepped outside and was met by an older man with a "Hotel Verona Airport" sign. It is the closest hotel to the airport - rated well and rather cheap, just 35 Euro per night. For an additional 5 Euro per sector, I had ordered a shuttle transfer.

The man didn't speak English (but French and Italian), so it was rather difficult to communicate. During check-in, he didn't accept my credit card for whatever reason, but asked me to pay cash. After a few moments, he called someone and handed the phone to me. The nice lady on the phone turned out to be the owner of the small hotel and she explained in English that the man was her father. She even apologized for his lack of English skills. Of course I would be able to pay with credit card on the next morning, she promised and asked me when I would like to have breakfast.

Then her father showed me the room which was big and really nice, just like the lobby. I was impressed by the choice of colors and design elements:

Views from the room on the next morning:

Lobby and breakfast room:

The owner welcomed me, turned on an English news channel and freshly made a big breakfast - what else can you ask for?

In the late morning, she drove me to the airport and I expressed my satisfaction with the hotel and the service.

I had already checked in online at home, so I could have gone airside immediately, but I decided to explore the modern terminal building for a while. Main entrance:

Check-in hall:

To my surprise, I discovered numerous spotter pictures taken at the airport...

...as well as creative plane models, obviously made by children:

About one hour before departure, I passed security and went to the small airside section of the terminal building. My plane arrived almost on time from London/Luton - it turned out to be HA-LWQ which used to be the newest plane in the Wizz Air fleet until recently. It wasn't even three months old back then:

Lufthansa CityLine Embraer 195 D-AEBI was being prepared for its return flight to Munich:

Boarding commenced early and - since I had paid extra for priority boarding - I was among the first passengers to step onto the bus. Interestingly, a ground agent even set up a cordon with a "priority boarding" sign in the bus to make sure that normal passengers and "priority boarding" passengers would remain segregated. While there was plenty of space in my section, the normal passengers must have felt really crowded.

After 15 minutes or so, the bus doors were opened again and a ground agent told us to return to the gate. Not good at all, I thought.  alert  Of course I immediately tried to find out what was going on and I was told by a ground agent that the flight would be delayed by half an hour or so due to a technical problem.  thumbsdown

After 30 minutes had passed, I went to the group of ground agents again and asked for an update. But they said there weren't any news and that I should just wait. I wasn't concerned about a delay of one hour, two hours or even more because my DTM-MUC flight wouldn't leave before 19:05 in the evening. However, I was starting to think about options in case of a cancelation - and it was obvious that those would be rather limited.

About an hour after the scheduled departure time, I asked for an update again and even asked for the "worst case procedure". Rebooking to a flight on another day? Flight on a replacement aircraft due to the high load? The agents looked rather clueless and told me again that I should just wait.

Of course I kept watching the happenings on the tarmac with my binoculars, but I couldn't see much. At one point, almost 1.5 hours after the scheduled departure time, the captain showed up on the stairs and the expression on his face didn't look good in my opinion, so my concerns were growing.  irked

Only five minutes later, an announcement was made and I was prepared for the worst - but, fortunately, the agent said that boarding would commence shortly.  thumbsup

This time, we really made it to the aircraft. Priority passengers could leave the bus first, so I was able to take some pictures in an undisturbed manner:

I really like Wizz Air's colors:

The two female brunette flight attendants in the front section could have qualified for a model contest, but they weren't overly friendly. Since I had also paid extra for a "preferred seat", I could choose between rows 1 and 2 which are blocked for all other passengers. Unfortunately, the window seats in row 2 were already occupied, so I chose 1F. Seat comfort was okay...

...and there was a reasonable amount of legroom:

http://i372.photobucket.com/albums/oo169/Planehunter/Romania2012/W63361legroom.jpg

Deserted apron:

The plane was packed, but the middle seat in my row remained empty, fortunately. After boarding had been completed, the English captain made a welcome announcement and apologized for the delay. He referred to a "small technical issue" which had to be fixed.

Exactly 1 hour and 54 minutes behind the scheduled departure time, we left the parking position and taxied to the runway which wasn't in good condition:

Goodbye, CLJ!

Liftoff after a powerful and rattling takeoff roll:

Seat pocket exploration:

Inflight magazine:

Network:

There wasn't a dedicated fleet information section - so just in case you are interested, Wizz Air currently operates 39 A320s, Wizz Air Ukraine has another three frames in service. The carrier used to have a small Bulgarian subsidiary as well and was also planning to start a Romanian subsidiary, but those projects were axed.

Buy-on-board options:

I decided to order a beer for 3 Euro and an average sandwich (chicken breast, cheese, taco sauce) for 4 Euro:

The clouds were soon gone and I could enjoy great views on this late summer day:

No doubts, this flight was packed:

Approach over a nice rural landscape:

I'd prefer to see them in the sea, far away from homes...

Large industrial facilities like those need a reliable and affordable power supply at any time...

...but that's it, I won't continue to talk about German energy issues.  ill

Unfortunately, I was soon facing the sun and couldn't take any more decent pictures. We touched down after a flying time of 1 hour and 49 minutes and taxied to the deserted terminal...

Spotless HA-LWQ shining in the September sun:

I wasn't surprised to see that only one passport control counter was staffed...a shortage of officers is not just a problem at MUC. After the officer had checked some people, a young guy at the front suddenly started running and passed the counter. "Halt!", the officer shouted, quickly jumped up and started chasing the young man, followed by a colleague. Well, I don't know whether they were able to catch him, but the counter remained deserted for 5 minutes...10 minutes...15 minutes...and I was wondering how long I and some 150 other passengers would have to wait in queue. After 20 minutes, I was considering to call the airport and express a complaint, but then an older officer showed up and...now guess what: He told us that everybody could pass! No more controls, nothing. Sure, why not expand the Schengen zone for a minute?  Yeah sure That's definitely not the right approach!  redflag

DTM's modern terminal was quite deserted on this Sunday afternoon:

Of course I made a visit to the nice observation deck...

...just in time to watch my plane leaving again:

Some hours later, Germanwings A319-112 D-AKNU (new registration) smoothly flew me back to Munich.

Conclusion
Both flights on Carpatair were enjoyable due to comfortable seating, friendly crews and good service. The Saab 2000 is a great aircraft, I can only recommend to try it. Transferring at Timisoara is easy, but the airport is not overly attractive and I wouldn't want to stay there for several hours. Despite the disappointing crew, I was positively surprised by Tarom. Moving map, snack and drink on a 33 minute flight - that's more than I had expected. Wizz Air offers a classic LCC product which is nothing to write home about, but I'm still impressed by the carrier's customer service (credit for missed flight). No doubts, I would fly on all these carriers again - but most preferably on Carpatair.

Best Regards,
PlaneHunter

Hi PH,

Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter):
That's definitely not the right approach!

What the hell! I wouldn't imagine German border guards doing this! Guess they arrested the runner?

Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter):
Unfortunately, the flight attendant noticed that I was taking pictures during taxi and asked me to turn off my camera. Well, of course I agreed.

Yes, you need to learn to be stealthy with these sorts of things. Just like in the States.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter):
After I had ordered a (tasty) black tea, she asked whether I'd also like a cold drink. So I ordered an orange juice and then she asked: "Do you need anything else? One more meal?" Very attentive!

Interesting. That looks exactly like Air Moldova's (not Moldavian's, mind you) meal--right down to the tea brand... Hmmm.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 1):
Spotting wasn't possible in the public area and there wasn't much else to do either. I was glad when I could finally pass security and head to my gate.

Well, not in that part of the terminal.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 1):
The dated domestic concourse with its basic interior wasn't a great place to be either. The area with four gates was getting crowded and I couldn't believe that - once again - there was only one run-down and unkempt bathroom (one cabin!) for each gender.

Well, it was supposed to become "phased out" in 2011. So you better believe no one's taking care of it
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter):
I had to pass appeared unfriendly, no smiles anywhere.

Well, they're supposed to be business-professional. No smiles upon embarkation. Weird if you're not used to it.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter):
Announcements were hard to understand due to the cabin crew member's voice speed and strong accent.

LOL. Yes, they tend to "eat sounds" when speaking. "The fli(ght) to Cluj toni(ght) will [...]"

Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter):
Unbelievable, but true - I couldn't find any mistakes here either:

Well, using the old color scheme is a mistake in my view
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 2):
To my surprise, I discovered numerous spotter pictures taken at the airport...

Yes, they're quite active in Cluj with that sort of thing...

Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter):
Exactly 1 hour and 54 minutes behind the scheduled departure time, we left the parking position and taxied to the runway which wasn't in good condition:

One joke is that every new LH pilot (subsidiaries of LH, I guess) which flies to Cluj for the first time has a freaked-out look on their face after seeing the condition of the runway!

Thanks for your report, PH!

Hi dc9northwest,

thanks a lot for your feedback! I was curious to hear your opinion.

No worries   I think you were pretty objective in your analysis. Luckily most of TAROM's medium-haul fleet features the moving map... although for the last 3 flights with them I've been stuck on the 2 planes which don't feature it.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 4):
Usually I use the camera discretely.

Well, in that part of the world--you better.   Although, they've made huge leaps in the past 5 years... OTP, CLJ now permit spotting, no longer do they ban photography in the airport (at least OTP). More civilized than CDG, hehe.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 4):
Ah, okay. Well, just recently I was surprised to find a locked toilet at Berlin Tegel in the late evening...which is not better!

Well, the new terminal extension was supposed to be used for all flights... but considering there's no Schengen admission yet, we have to wait.... There should be a new domestic wing opening soon in the new part of the departures terminal which although completed, was empty the last time I was there.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 4):
That's a good one!

I read it on the Romanian spotters' forum. I think CLJ has the worst runway in Romania.

Thanks for yet another amazing report with amazing pictures !

Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter):
After I had ordered a (tasty) black tea, she asked whether I'd also like a cold drink. So I ordered an orange juice and then she asked: "Do you need anything else? One more meal?"

It seem like very nice service in Carpatair. Very impressive especially on such a small plane.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter):
Spotting wasn't possible in the public area and there wasn't much else to do either. I was glad when I could finally pass security and head to my gate.

That is always very frustrating when it happens to me.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 1):
Of course I was glad that Tarom even provided a moving map:

That's a nice feature that more airlines should provide.

Tarom seems to have great service as well particularly for short flight like that.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 2):

They should have explained the situation fully rather then say it's just a technical problem. That is very stressful to wait and see what happens and if you will make connections.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 2):
I decided to order a beer for 3 Euro and an average sandwich (chicken breast, cheese, taco sauce) for 4 Euro:

Sandwich and beer looks like good value but I would prefer something else than Heineken.....

All in all, a great short trip with three new airlines and some new airports for you.

I'm very much looking forward very much to your next report !

Hi there PH - great work as usual. Good that you could use the travel voucher along with some more interesting types and places. Annoying about the last minute delay on the Wizz Air flight - had a similar thing on AA the other week where everything was on time until the very last minute, and nobody could give a firm answer as to what was happening.

And I wonder why the guy just decided to make a run through passport control? Very odd.

Great to log the SAAB twice, something on my list as well.
Same goes for the A318 and Wizz air!
However I'm quite dissapointed by the immigration in DTM! As German border control isn't usually that easy on me when I'm flying at all.

Hello PlaneHunter,

Thanks for this interesting and well pictured TR. A nice routing into the southwestern part of Europe and blimey, you received the A318 that was cancelled on me some months ago. Carpatair look really good, surprisingly better than Tarom imho. I still have to try Wizz though. How would you rate them against their 2 main competitors (LCC product that is): easyJet and Ryanair?

Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter):
Surprisingly, the equipment on the short Tarom flight turned out to be an A318 - not a new type for me, but definitely more interesting than an ATR.

I would be most happy with an A318. Tarom still schedules it to BRU so maybe something to try out one of these…

Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter):
Unfortunately, the flight attendant noticed that I was taking pictures during taxi and asked me to turn off my camera. Well, of course I agreed.

I can see by the course of your pics that you indeed obliged

Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter):
The former's most interesting page - no complaints this time:

Do you look up the fleet info before or after the flight or maybe you know it by heart  Wow! Wait a moment… I know the answer already

Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter):
The friendly flight attendant soon distributed tasty sandwiches (ham, cheese & lettuce on tomato bread) and offered various drinks:

Impressive and warm welcomed.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter):
Can you imagine that these airlines are partners?

I can imagine but are they really?

Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter):
One of Tarom's A310s which is leased out to the government
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter):
We came to a stop next to Air Bucharest's one and only aircraft:

Some familiar sights when I was in OTP in Nov 2012.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter):
Oh, and one flight attendant told me to stop taking pictures. Of course I stopped doing so...for a while.

Seems to be a common issue with these carriers!

Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter):
Lobby and breakfast room:

Wow, what a nice and homely hotel. It makes a good change from the busy and grand business city hotels.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter):
Seat comfort was okay...

I do like the modern seat design and the colours used.

They did extend the runway by 250m but I guess that's all they had money for.

FYI, regarding the A310, RO just got it back. It's not operating as presidential aircraft anymore. Apparently they'll use it on charter routes... maybe!

Yes, at least at OTP--the official reason was that it's also an air force base.

Alright, thanks!

Quoting dc9northwest (Reply 21):
Yes, YR-BGA and -BGB to be precise.

Good to know.

It was annoying, but they still brought me to DTM early enough.

Hi PH,

As always from you, a great report! When I see a new TR with the PlaneHunter name next to it I always know I'm in for a treat.

Carpatair seem to be good (not so much TSR and OTP though). Didn't know there were bathroom windows in the Saab!

I must try a Saab one day (either a 340 or 2000), unfortunately they've never operated over here. This is Fokker-territory with the occasional Dash.

TAROM seem ok, at least for such a short hop.

Your Wizz experience seems pretty good except for the delay, a carrier I would like to try one day just because of their color scheme!

regards,
Sveinn
