A while ago I was invited to attend the inaugural events for NCL's new cruise ship the Breakaway. I first didnt think I would be able to attend but nearer the time I was invited again and was able to re organise my schedule and accept the invitation.

NCL Breakaway is themed on New York and its home port is NYC. It will sail down to the Caribbean and back.

I decided as I needed to get to Southampton I would take Aer Lingus to LGW and then train it staying overnight in Southampton the night before. Jurys Hotels had an amazing room sale due to their 20th Anniversary so all I paid was GBP20 ! I was able to take a friend so I invited my cruise ship buddy Gareth

..

DATE: 28/APRIL/13
AIRLINE: AER LINGUS
ROUTE: DUBLIN - LONDON GATWICK
CLASS: ECONOMY
SEAT: 29F
AIRCRAFT: AIRBUS A320
REG: EI - DVJ NAMED ''St. Macárthain''

So I got the ''death bus'' due to its horrible 0330am departure and made my way to DUB. I checked in at the Aer Lingus Gold Circle desk and made my way to security.

Gareth was flying later that day from NOC-LGW as it was easier for him.

Soon it was time to board and Gold Circle members were invited to board at their leisure so I went on first.
I was greeted by two friendly FAs and directed to my seat. I should have shares in 29F  http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/NCLBR/file_zpse67b0536.jpg

Pre order voucher :

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/NCLBR/file_zps83cabfbf.jpg

The crew came around and asked if I wanted anything. I had to tell them I had pre paid for breakfast. So three times over the last few weeks crew are not looking at the sheet to see who has pre ordered. Not a big issue but would hate to see what would happen if they sold out of breakfasts before getting to a pre ordered passengers row.

I opted for coffee ( if you can call it that ) Im not a fan of instant and it tasted like dish water. Carte Noir does a passable instant coffee but they dont serve it anymore.

The flight went by so fast and soon it was time to land into LGW.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/NCLBR/file_zps45ff875b.jpg

So we pulled up on stand and I disembarked the aircraft thanking the crew for a nice flight.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/NCLBR/file_zpsce445b04.jpg

I then made my way to the train . LGW was very easy to get through I got from plane to train in less than 15 minutes. LGW really has improved so much over recent years.

I had bought an advanced saver fare with Southern Trains but they had cancelled my service. They also did not tell me and did not email me either!! Thats bad customer service for you. In the end I had to buy a new ticket to brighton for GBP10 and then use my other ticket from there to Southampton. Hopefully I can claim it back.

I made my way to the Jurys hotel before heading out again into town. Later that evening Gareth arrived so I met him at the train station and we found a nice Chinese restaurant.

After that we were both quite tired so we had an early night .

The next morning we woke up and could see the ship out of the hotels window.

I had downloaded the NCL iConcierge App before arriving to the ship which meant I could pre book restaurants once I could pick up the ships wifi and this service was free. We really wanted to eat at Teppanyaki and its always a popular choice. We had managed to pick up the ships signal before boarding in the terminal so were delighted to secure our chosen dining venue and time.  http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/NCLBR/file_zps14a0073d.jpg

After nearly being around the whole ship Gareth and I were invited to look at a private area reserved for guests who pay around $50 for a week for access to this private club. The barman was very nice and opened up a bottle of champagne for us. Apart from two others we were the only ones there so it was quite pleasant. We had a good chat to the barman about his job and he had been on alot of the NCL fleet over the years.

An interesting concept first introduced on the NCl Epic is studios for Single passengers. There were complaints that single passengers had to pay for two people so this is NCLs answer to it. I have to say it was nice. They have their own lounge for meeting other single passengers and should two people want to sail together but want their own space and bathroom they have interconnecting ones.

This is my favourite dining venue on NCL. I just love it . Always a funny show with the chef cracking jokes. The smell of the garlic rice was just to die for. Make sure your partner eats the same as you though otherwise your likely to scare them off LOL...

Kir Royale .... sure why not

Time to look at the nightclub again where more people had turned up. I love this concept especially in the Caribbean.

Gareth and I had a few hours to kill so we decided to head to a hobby shop in Southampton called Rons Rails. He specialises in model railways. Over the last few weeks I have become interested again in a hobby I had as a kid. I have been wanting to buld myself a model railway again so this was a great chance to chat to him and buy some things. As a kid I used to have a train set that filled the whole bedroom   Im not going to have that this time but a medium size set will be nice to have. I have also been bidding for some items on Ebay which I won

After a nice visit to the shop I came away with enough track to set me up , a level crossing and some magazines which he gave me free of charge. You cant beat these family run shops who really know their stuff and love their hobby.

By that time it was lunch time and so we headed to IKEA for the famous meat balls meal. I also managed to pick up two items that I was unable to find in Belfast or Dublin so it was great to kill two birds with one stone.

DATE: 30/APRIL/13
AIRLINE: AER LINGUS
ROUTE: LONDON GATWICK - DUBLIN
CLASS: ECONOMY
SEAT: 5A/C
AIRCRAFT: AIRBUS A320
REG: EI - DVJ NAMED ''St. Macárthain''

Soon it was time to get the train back to LGW. It was around 1 hour 50 minutes on a direct train. Gareth hinted that he might like to see if we could get on an earlier flight and when he asked the girl at check in this was authorised and we were given row 5 with middle seat blocked.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/NCLBR/NCLBREAK2/file_zps81bf5ada.jpg

We then made our way to the No.1 lounge for a quick stop.

After around 30 mins it was time to head to the gate. I have to say the No.1 lounge is not as good as it used to be. You used to be able to choose a complimentary made to order hot item but this is not charged. The two PCs upstairs are broken. Also they had a nice library area up stairs too and this was shut and through the glass you could see rubbish and empty boxes just thrown down . Very bad in my opinion and needs to be cleaned up and brought back to what it was.

Some things we were given from NCL :

So thats the end of the report. I hope you all enjoyed it . Love to read your comments as usual and appreciate them all.

Aer Lingus performed well as usual. The crew on the return were not the best but what can you do . All flights on time and comfortable. Tasty food served with BOB.

NCL's new ship was lovely. They have gone for more conservative colours and decor than on previous ships and I love it . It really feels more like HAL or CEL. Im sure this ship will do really well not only for New Yorkers wanting to head to the Carribbean but for many passengers who will fly to New York from all over the world. New York shopping and a Carribean cruise ! What more could you want

Great report - both the Aer Lingus and the Breakaway.

I was on the Epic in March (SXM), and attended the seminar detailing this ship. Brings back good memories, as you can see a LOT of design influences from NCL's largest ship. It's nice to see that they weren't just blowing smoke with all the selling points they made, like the waterfront/promenade, and the return to rectilinear cabins and enclosed bathrooms. The balconies look really small compared to the Epic, through. The Haven looks great - that pay as you go wine station is new to me and would be very welcome.

Good luck getting any refund out of Southern. I have family in the area of LGW and transit through that area often - always try to take First trains if I can - also to avoid Victoria station if I'm travelling to London. No such choice for you I suppose, going to Soton.

Aside from the lounge, how was your experience at LGW? I haven't been through the airport itself since the late 90's, with all my trips being on Star carriers since then.

WOW. Can't believe this is NCL! I know I said I may have to give them a try in the other thread, but I think this definitely solidified it. Amazing how far ships have come in the past few years ie Breakaway, Breeze, Oasis Thanks for showing us!

Hi thanks for the reply Im glad you enjoyed it. Yes they have done a good job it really is something new with the best aspects of Epic included.

Southern are hard to avoid alot of the time but will see what they say anyway. Gatwick airport since it got new owners is a really nice experience. The departures area and security is vastly improved and they are still spending money and renovating other areas. Its great to see it.

Quoting Jetsgo (Reply 13):

Yes you should certainly try them im sure you would not regret it. The quality of the food is really good and the numerous dining options and casual approach is great for those that dont want to dress up every night.

Hey Philip,

Thanks for the great report documenting yet another of our adventures. It really shows up the ship well. She is an amazing vessel. Really well designed and laid out. The balconies were really small though and I still don't think there's enough swimming pool space for those hot sea days in the Caribbean. I'm sure she'll be popular with her guests though.

Looking forward to our next trip, wherever it may take us.

P.S. Where is the pic of the Liberty Stadium from the air that you promised to include?

This is very interesting. On a recent DUB-KIR flight I noticed three hares hopping around near Pier D...thought it was a once off but clearly not. They should really sort it out as they pose a real danger to aircraft.

I dont know about these things but are they a real risk? They seem to run very fast when they want to. If anything was coming Id say they would be well gone.

Hi Philip,

very nice photo report about your latest cruise adventure! Very impressive ship - and the food pictures made me hungry as usual!

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
So three times over the last few weeks crew are not looking at the sheet to see who has pre ordered. Not a big issue but would hate to see what would happen if they sold out of breakfasts before getting to a pre ordered passengers row.

That's weak indeed. Btw - the breakfast itself doesn't look overly appealing.

I had to tell them I had pre paid for breakfast. So three times over the last few weeks crew are not looking at the sheet to see who has pre ordered. Not a big issue but would hate to see what would happen if they sold out of breakfasts before getting to a pre ordered passengers row.

That’s not good. They apparently don’t see the connection between online ordering and customer service? Are prices cheaper online?

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
Thats bad customer service for you.

Indeed. That’s what you get with those privatised train companies...

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
As a kid I used to have a train set that filled the whole bedroom

Me too! I sold mine many years ago. Too bad I realise afterwards, it would’ve been some cool present for my son. I had a Marklin set.

Hey Udo
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 22):
very nice photo report about your latest cruise adventure! Very impressive ship - and the food pictures made me hungry as usual!

Yes you would not go hungry there. So many good quality options for everyone there.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 22):
That's weak indeed. Btw - the breakfast itself doesn't look overly appealing.

Indeed it seemed at first that they were delivering these items first which made sense but not in my experience on 4 sectors in two weeks. Still it may not look much but the breakfast is very tasty and not oily and actually is their strong point. I guess it also has to do with preferences. I hate cold meats and cheese for breakfast but then again its a very Continental thing where as the Irish and British prefer hot usually.

I found it difficult to believe you were on a cruise ship! Very impressive I have to admit.

This is very interesting. On a recent DUB-KIR flight I noticed three hares hopping around near Pier D...thought it was a once off but clearly not. They should really sort it out as they pose a real danger to aircraft.

Actually I thought it was very good. I must admit it is not a cruise brand I sell alot of (more Silversea/Regent etc) but for the market they are putting on their I can see it working very well.

We had our main meal in Taste if I remember, but loved the Haven and the Irish bar was frequented a little  ! I thought it was very loud but I am guessing with 2500 travel people on their with a free bar, it would not be your normal atmosphere. It actually made me want to go on a cruise though, which is saying something.

Thats cool. Yes very similar except throw Crystal in too . NCL is still not big enough in Ireland but I know NCL are keen to change that. For years RCI/CEL have had the mass market. Silversea have always been in Ireland and I was on them a few times myself. They are in a different market obviously but I love them all .

The Haven was lovely. The whole ship was buzzing and the nightclub was packed. You know what its like when press/media/trade get together its wild !! No wonder the free bar was only 7-12 LOL... Mind you when that had opened the free beer and wine up until then had done some alot of damage

Oh interesting so you never been ? I went on my first one with RCI around 13 years ago and never looked back. I love them. Its great that you can see it though so it answers all the questions you might have. I guess thats what these things are all about. To change perceptions and increase business.

Its an iPhone App that allows you to pre book dining and other venues. Check your onboard account and see whats on around the ship. Its free to use and you connect to ''NCL Breakaway wifi''.

It would be nice and put passengers minds at ease if the crew were advised to hand them out before service starts, it would be easy on those slightly longer flights.

Were the crew on your return flight Gatwick based by any chance? I found them a little lacking in charm last year but I'm not sure they still have a crew base there or not.

Thanks for sharing.

My "cruise" alter ego missed the Breakaway inaugural as I had too many "airline" commitments this time around, but I'm wishing I had planned a little better.

My cruise colleagues told me that despite a few check in glitches that NCL had learnt their lessons from the Epic, and I must say, that, from your report and pics, she looks a lot more tasteful and contemporary than her larger fleetmate. Can't help thinking that she looks like one of the Solstice Class from X......but then she's Meyer Werft I guess. Craving a bit of shipboard pampering now, and have to wait until Marina in November

Yeah I think it was suggested then it became noticed when it wasnt served first. You would think that it would be easier to get those handed out first as no money needs to change hands.

No LGW base AFAIK . It was DUB staff anyway , quite young so I guess maybe they are in training mode but they need to smile and interact with the passengers more. They were having the craic amongst themselves so it wasnt a case of personality.

Just got promoted to a full time position in work so I hope to make a fantasied adventure into reality in the years to come, so Titanic 2 voyage is on the cards!

Best bet to source model railway gear is to attend one of their exhibitions [huge range of items available including Irish loco's] Summer is here so over the next few months they should be about. I have attended events in Bangor, Dublin and Enniskillen. Shop in Bangor is the only shop I am aware of and have not been in years.
I found the hobby very frustrating due to many failed projects, so I am looking at moving towards garden railways which do not require powered rails!

Will send a PM if I come across any events

Bon dia Philip!

A great report covering a great ship, it is impressive the amount of things you can do on board of one of these beasts. Let alone, the amount of different foods you can taste. Yummy!

EI looks very nice to me, I want to fly them some day and get to experience it by myself after so much reading and seeing of your experiences on board.

I like their interiors and the relaxed atmosphere. Although the fact that you had to tell them that you had pre-booked breakfast makes it somehow disappointing, I think they should cater the paying customers first, that is what pre-ordered meals is about, isn't it?

Great report - thanks for taking the time to write it up. Also, good to see a few other agents comment on the event or who are soon to attend the events in New York City.

I too was on board, though working so its great to see the pics as I only had about 30 mins to explore the ship and didn't get to see everything!

I thought she was very impressive, more evolution than revolution from Norwegian Epic which is good because that is a very popular ship ; Norwegian Breakaway has tweaked and improved on what is offered. She is better than the last which is exactly as it should be, continuous improvement. My first Norwegian ship I saw was Norwegian Dawn in 2004, and I visited her sister yesterday in Dover, Norwegian Star. Very interesting to see how the company has evolved from the Dawn class, through the Jewel class, through Norwegian Epic and now to Breakaway, soon Getaway and next Breakaway Plus.

Hope you liked the bag - I think we spent about 5 hours making those up!

Lastly, we've gone back to the full "Norwegian Cruise Line." I got "shot" a couple of times for saying "NCL", making a donation or two to the "swear jar!"   All of the branding and marketing you'll see really stresses the Norwegian.

Anyways, thanks again for the write-up. They are lots of work (partly why my reports have stopped, I also don't travel much at the moment!). Thanks too for the photos - I feel I have seen the rest of the ship now!

Yes that is true there are a lot auxiliary charges, however if you go with the idea knowing that a head of time, I am planning for next week, to spend about $400 + for a 2 day cruise. I think it is all about the expectation level. Knowing that Norwegian at least offers these multitudes of options.

Hello....Very nice report and pixs. Maybe I'm alone, but the size of these newer ships is out of control. They are nothing but container ships with container cabins. I was on the Dawn when it was new and found it big but these newer ones are horrendous. Moving that many people on and off in ports is like moving hordes of sheep. I must admit there is great deal of food choices and ambiances. The first room you showed was a closet, and for 2 people? Ouch. There was no room to separate the beds if you are traveling with a friend or companion. I also noticed only one coffee cup. I crossed on the QE2 from New York to Southampton in First Class and upgraded dining room. It was awesome. My cabin was the size of 3 of the puny rooms, and the walls were in teakwood. Granted, you don't spend alot of time in the room, but you want to be comfortable when you are.
IMHO the breakfast you were served on the flight looked awlful and was over cooked...F/As probably turned the ovens on before push back and by the time your meal got to you it was over done.

had downloaded the NCL iConcierge App before arriving to the ship which meant I could pre book restaurants once I could pick up the ships wifi and this service was free. We really wanted to eat at Teppanyaki and its always a popular choice. We had managed to pick up the ships signal before boarding in the terminal so were delighted to secure our chosen dining venue and time.

Today's technology, eh?

Happy flying

Hi there Philip,

This bring back a few memories of my trip over to DUB last year! First off you got the same plane I flew home on, secondly, the GC lounge in DUB and third the No1 lounge at LGW! Seems even in this short period though its gone downhill as it seemed ok when I was in there - although a little busy.

Seems odd to see so many VS jets idling around at LGW too with that fleet stretched so much!

I really should pay another visit to DUB some time, just to go in the chocolate lounge!

Aer Lingus also looks good, I like their BoB products, I think for 7.50 it still is quite a good price for such a meal, which looked nice.

Thanks again!

Elias

Very nice report.

I'll be sailing on the Norwegian Epic in about 6 weeks so this has got my that little more hyped.

Thanks
