Trip Report – The New American is Arriving

I finally have a chance to experience the new American Airlines’ Boeing 777-300ER and if this is the future of AA, I am looking forward to more of it, and hopefully the tired domestic cabins will feature these new changes including new seats with power outlets and personal TV featuring audio video on demand. In general, I really like the new first class seat, which is definitely a major step above the former flagship suite on Boeing 777-200ERs. The new suite is definitely comparable with British Airways’ new first class suites (even a bit better) and Cathay Pacific’s first class suites. The inflight service, which is usually American’s weakest part, was pleasant and the DFW crews were usually a bit better than the Chicago and New York based crews. However the wine list and the menu are definitely not up to par, especially the wine list. The menu is almost the same as business class, with a few additional courses and side dishes. I will point out the difference in the menu transcript. The wine list is just sad and I don’t expect AA to bring back the Perrier Jouet, but can we settle on a better champagne brand that is better known? Business class is served the same kind of Gosset champagne but a lower grade.

I arrived at the airport around 1pm and the premium check-in counters at DFW Terminal D were not too busy. There were more agents than passengers, but I might be a bit early even there were a number of European flights taking off soon. The agent was very friendly. But there is no Flagship check-in like other major American Airline hubs, like LAX and JFK. I am not sure if it is important, but it is nice to have a more private check-in experience.

AA 50 has been using gate D25 everyday since Boeing 777-300ER has been introduced on this route.

Admiral Club – most underwhelming part of the trip, despite this Admiral Club is one of the nicer ones in DFW. However, I still think it is ridiculous not to have a flagship lounge here at DFW, one of American’s largest hubs. Even as a first class passenger, I only get one single premium beverage coupon (and I honestly think a refreshment coupon will be more appropriate). The Admiral Club is very busy during this early afternoon hours and getting more crowded as the afternoon proceeds.

The best part of the Admiral Club at Terminal D is the view of the apron especially it provides a good view of the planes parked at D24 and D25, which are not surprisingly occupied by American Airlines’ latest fleet additions – Boeing 777-300ERs. N721AN had just arrived from LHR, and would be taking a break here at DFW today, while N720AN would operate my flight to LHR after spending the night here at DFW. I wonder if there are some trainings going on before the introduction of a tighter schedule in June.

Boarding began at 3:56pm and I was the first one to board the plane, apart from the single wheel-chaired passenger and one VIP passenger sitting in the business class cabin. The plane was pretty full from front to back, and with the earliest arrival time, this flight was popular with passengers connecting to other European and UK domestic cities. The F/As were very enthusiastic today; as I later found out that it was their first flight on the 77W after their training in January. It was their first time in a real 77W cabin.

The weather at Dallas today was not great, and it was actually pretty chilly, compared to the better weather the day before. It was also very windy and you can feel the plane swinging a bit throughout boarding. However the operation at DFW seems to be okay and maybe it is still early in the afternoon. Door was closed at 4:32pm, and we pushed back seven minutes later. Everything seemed to be going on fine, but then we stopped of R/W36R. The pilot came on line and told us that they have to take care of few mechanical items but it should not take long. The windy weather had also slowed down traffic, but our flying time was only eight hours and ten minutes, so even with a minor delay, we would land early. We finally received our clearance and took off at 5:11pm.

We first climbed to 33,000feet, and passed Holdenville, Tusla/Broken Arrowhead, Kansas City, Des Moines, Thunder Bay, Canada, and then towards Hudson Bay and James Bay, and then passing the Belcher Islands and Quebec before climbing to 36,000feet, but due to turbulence, we went back to 33,000feet before passing Akapatok Islands, and we climbed back to 36,000feet before passing Greenland and Irminger Sea, and then we climbed to 37,000feet. We finally reached the other side of Atlantic Ocean by passing the Island of Barra in Scotland, and then towards Glasgow, and then we descent back to 35,000feet after passing the city of Workington, and then towards Birmingham, and then Heathrow.

The flight attendants were asked to stay seated a big longer than usual due to a bit of weather in Texas today. Seat belt sign was turned off at 5:29pm after we passed the weather and reached 33,000feet.

Amuse bouche – Smoked turkey with a southwestern style on top of toasted white bread – exclusive first class feature

Starters – first class has a choice – the table is set up individually but to be honest, business class has the same salt & peppershakers and rectangular plates. However first class has its own line of wine glasses and water glasses – especially the purple ones.
Cured Salmon with Poached Pear and Avocado crème – this is the featured starter for business class; however, it is delicious and I will select this starter again in the future.

Prosciutto and mozzarella with honeydew melon

With braised leeks and Parmesan cheese
Basically French Onion soup and only first class passengers have soup service

Seasonal Greens with fresh vegetables, sweet and spicy pecans and blue cheese

Instead of served together with starter, first class passengers have a separate salad course served, but the salad is exactly the same with business class.

Assorted Gourmet Breads – Sourdough rolls or biscuit type rolls

Entrées – business class has the exact same four-entrée choices, but the difference is that first class will have the entrées plated individually in the galley, instead of served in a casserole dish, and the pasta dish cannot be customized in business class. However first class passengers got to customize the pasta dish with different sauce and to be topped with grilled shrimps (presume a meat or seafood topping). I really like my customized pasta dish with grilled shrimps and tomato sauce.

The selection of wines is not particular interesting and British Airways definitely has a better selection, and I prefer their wines. There is not even a French red wine featured in the first class wine list.

The bathroom on American Airlines’ Boeing 777-300ER is finally a proper premium cabin bathroom with a bit more features.

On my way to my seat, the F/A offered to hang my dress shirt, which was pretty impressive given this is American Airlines.

There were two pillows and two blankets; however the blanket is a bit too short for an average American. Considered I am not too tall, the blanket is still a bit short, and I need the second blanket to cover my feet.

I was able to sleep comfortably for an hour or two, but we hit some really rough turbulence when flew over Greenland, and I was literally jolted awake. The pilot had to make an announcement asking the flight attendants to be seated immediately, and you could hear plates falling. I opened my window and saw a bit of lights – summer is definitely coming, as the sun did not really completely set throughout the night. I also did not get a chance to check out the new bar in the business class cabin because of the turbulence and the overnight nature of the flight.

However, there was a small snack station in first class, which features mini sandwiches and wraps, along with fresh fruits and small cookies.

For the rest of the flight, I turned on my laptop and used the complimentary wifi service provided by American Airlines. I guess they were still testing the system, and the pricing would be $12 for two hours, $17 for four hours, and $19 for the whole flight. I tested the wifi but tracking my own flight on radar24, which was amazing, and was able to tweet, login to facebook, checked email, and the speed was a bit better towards the end of the flight, as more passengers were asleep. The speed was better than expected, but you obviously cannot open various windows, and loading the pictures on flyertalk and airliners.net take time. I did not try youtbue though. For basic email and surfing, the speed is acceptable, but the concern remains, “what will happen when everyone uses the network?” I even used my iPhone to try logging on, and I could whats app my sister in Hong Kong and she was impressed. I was able to use most of my app, and the speed is actually a bit better, and there is really no blind spot on this transatlantic flight. Once again, this system will automatically disengage at 10,000feet and after six minutes of inactivity.

I requested breakfast to be served about an hour prior to arrival and the F/A offered me breakfast, as I went back to the bathroom to change back into my street clothes. I chose the hot breakfast option, as it was an American Classics item, and it is dinnertime in the West Coast.

Descent soon began at 6:51am UK time (00:51am DFW time), and the F/A came around with glasses of sparkling water with grapefruit segments, and then a box of Lily O’Brien chocolates.

The circling situation was not too bad – pretty ordinary and with our short flying time, it was not a problem. We finally landed on R/W27L at 7:21am and we parked at Gate 40 at 7:27am. Of course, it took a while for the gate bridge to be attached to the plane and I took the opportunity to take a few pictures of the mini business class cabin and grabbed a copy of the menu (for comparison).

Seat 3A – only one window, so I will hesitate to pick this seat in the future.

I honestly am very impressed with American Airlines’ Boeing 777-300ER and I am lucky to have a great group of crews, who are still enthusiastic about the cabin and not bothered by the new service. The new seat is definitely the highlight of the aircraft, and both first and business class are very comfortable and definitely put American Airlines head of the game among all American carriers, especially the lackluster United’s Business-First products.

Pros of the new First Class Flagship Suites:
1. I really like how American Airlines retains most of the good features of the former flagship suites, including the ability for the seat to swing to an office position with the extended office table. There are three positions – forward for takeoff and landing, side for dining and relaxing, and office position.
2. I really like the new updated panel with not only one, but also two universal power outlets, USB port, connector pod to play the video contents from your own apple personal devices, and the headset console port.
3. The armrests can be lower on both sides and allow a wider flat seat.

Con of the new First Class Flagship Suites:
1. I only have one minor complaint – I really think the suites lack privacy, even in the flat bed position. The mini first class section is a bit cozier than previously and while I am not a big fan for a totally enclosed suite or a fancy door to open or close the suites, and I think there can be a bit more things to enhance the privacy factor.

However, the software can be more problematic for American Airlines. I have noticed that the service in business class takes a bit longer than previously and the benefit for first class passengers maybe a more efficient service. The new dining is better than before, but will American Airlines be able to sustain the high standard and be able to introduce new dishes every year? The former cycle of food is served for almost a decade with little changes, and variety will be the key for a continued success. The lack of differentiation between first and business class is concerning, but since most airlines are heading this track, I doubt AA will do something dramatic.

Very nice report - thanks for this. I enjoyed your comparison style in this report and I agree, it all looks very nice. A significant step up for AA, and I hope to try out the new 773ER at some point this year.

I keep seeing Cathay Pacific though every time I see those J class seats. LOL

Despite the wine list issue, the food looked tasty and I also like the choose your combination pasta option. The breakfast items looked good too.

I wish AA would offer something different apart from sundaes for dessert. While I love ice-cream and it looks amazing, all of the American carriers seem to offer this in their premium cabins and there are a world of amazing desserts out there which are simply never offered (which is a shame). I think I've only seen one or two Delta trip reports where the dessert was NOT the sundae.

Ok, you are kidding, right? That was FIRST CLASS INTERNATIONAL? Plastic on departure? Let me make a few other observations...IMHO
-Flatware should be preset, not rolled up.
-no hot towels
-a slice of turkey on white bread
-salmon without toast points/ or even a cracker
-onion soup without croutons
-how about freshly cut cheese on the pasta
-the salad.....iceberg lettuce with cherry tomatoes?
-that sundae AGAIN...how about a selection of a least another item
-no cheese course
-the breakfast looked awlful, a choice of breads/rolls
-chocolates after breakfast at 7:30am

I doubt that First Class is just a bit more than business.......not worth the price for sure.

Honestly, what do the folks who put this together get their training?

That's an interesting argument IMHO. I've flown in F and C on AA quite a bit, and I honestly think the service in F class seemed way longer and drawn out than what you get in C class. However, to each his own and it's quite possible that we've been on different routes and definitely had different crews!

Overall I think you seemed very pleased with the service and offering in the new F class. From the TR's I've read, it seems like a wonderful plane to fly on. It's always nice to see things improving, and more importantly the passengers recognizing changes.

I'd like to see more TR's from you in the future!

Overall, it looked like a great business class product. Unfortunately, it's a First class product. While I think that much of it was presented well, and it sounds like the crews are in good spirits (which makes ALL the difference on a flight, I know!), I'd expect a bit more differentiation from Biz class.

My biggest quibble? AA is charging $13,384 for a seat on tomorrow's DFW-LHR flight in F, and yet:

This isn't a criticism of your report, it is more of my observation of AA's product for the nose end of market.

In my opinion, the product for "First Class" seems more like "Business Class" on a 3-star Asian airline.

As at AA737-823 points out, the price is $13k, that's not cheap. Considering for half the price you can book Lufthansa, Swiss Air and others who can fly you across the pond in Business Class that is comparable/better than AA.

I'm not a huge seafood fan, but smoke turkey on a bread roll is not the same as caviar. Also on Singapore Airlines, they serve Lobster Thermidor for business and first class, yet AA only served about 100 grams of cured salmon. Also the salad they served look like somebody chopped two icebergs in half, sprinkled some nuts and things on it and served it.
Wine list needs improving, and when will USA-based airlines start offering other desserts besides ice cream sundaes? I love ice cream but its a biz/F ticket, offer the choice of a dark chocolate tart or a lemon meringue or cheesecake.

Food aside, at least the service provided to you was good! I've never had a good experience on a US airline before, lol
The hard product is definitely an improvement and is catching up to the leading carriers in the world.

I actually notice that the service in J is taken longer than F, despite they have less courses than F. It might be the F/A to passenger ratio, and the new service takes a bit more time to prepare. For a small F cabin of 8, the service just goes smoother. Yes F is more drawn out, but F/As have less passengers to deal with. To be honest, AA F and J menu has little differences... But service in F is more personal and more efficient. Nonetheless most US carriers suffer this "consistency" issue and if you get a bad crew, even a super fancy seat can't save the reputation of the airlines. Given the stormy relationship between management and the crews on most US airlines, it is really hard to expect more emotional labor from the F/As. It is hard to be sincere when your workplace has become so intolerable and your pays and benefits are being cut consistently, while the CEO and top management gets big bonus checks.

Well I am flying a US carrier, so I just have to adjust my expectation a bit. IMHO, this flight was pretty good, especially for American Airlines and most US carriers. The Dallas crews are always nicer than ORD or JFK crew, in my personal experiences. I think AA's weakness will be the catering and wine list - I am actually more bothered by the simple salad being served on our flight - slicing an iceberg lettuce in half and serving to passengers is a bit cheap. I personally feel that there needs to more differentiation between F and J menus - F should not have the same starter as J. I don't mind F and J sharing a few entrees, but F should have at least one more choice than J, and should have at least one F only entree.

Freshly grated Parmesan cheese is offered for the pasta, but I declined.

Sorry I did not visit the onboard bar between F and J because it was very choppy throughout the night, as noted in my report. At one point, I was literally jolted awake so I decided that this evening was the not type of evening that I should venture around the plane. It is also an overnight flight and I don't want to be too disruptive.

I agree about the lavatory. It is WAY PAST DUE for a US carrier to have a premium class lavatory that isn't disgusting, and laid out just like the Y-lavs.
I'm no snob- I typically travel in Y. But for your money up front, you should have a nicer lavatory!

Despite the seat area looking spacious many things, be it the fittings or the linens, or the glassware (or lack of) just lack refinement and, dare I say it, class. It just doesn't look very premium. Perhaps it feels a different experience in person but this is the impression I get from photos. The toilet is the exception here, which looks fantastic, BA's is the same size as Economy with no extra fittings and can be impossible to change in. What are the quality of the fittings in the cabin? This is one of the subtle but main differences on many airlines between F and J, with a feel of great quality at the front not found in J.

The seat itself, with the touch-screen control panel, looks particularly good, though you mentioned blankets for the turn down, is there no duvet? Food looks passable and I can't understand why they can't have their own full menu for First Class, it just seems ridiculous. The breakfast, however, does look great and the presentation the most refined of any dish.

I also have to say that I am very surprised that the F/A's didn't go gestapo on you for those interior photos. Any photos of anything make them very nervous and then they turn just plain scary...... (Remember 9/11!!!!)

I have flown AA's F class a few times in the last couple of years, domestically and from GRU. Their service has improved a lot, and is on the same level as UA (I know there are some differences). Compared to JJ's F, the main difference is that on AA they charge for 'Five Star Service' while this same perk is included on JJ's F.

On my experiences, sometimes there were some flight attendant who was clearly on a bad mood, but there were others in the team who made up for this one (it happens on all airlines...).

My next trip to the USA will be on AA's F, GRU-MIA on the old Flagship Suite, JFK-GRU on the new First Class. So, I am looking forward to check the differences on the products. I will also fly F class domestically, and also Eagle. So, I will have the chance to check almost all levels of service provided by AA.

The overall experience on AA has grown on me. I am a Star Gold on JJ, and after they move to Oneworld next year, I will certainly fly AA a lot more.

Thanks for yet another enjoyable trip report. You do get around, it's hard to keep up with you!

From what I can tell American is certainly putting a lot of effort into shedding its image of a tired old legacy carrier. The hardware certainly looks rather nice and modern and if I'm not mistaken, I think their Business Class seat is identical to the one Cathay Pacific now has on the B777-300.

The food however, looks rather underwhelming. A canapé with a slice of chicken on it is hardly gourmet food and they might have done something for the presentation of the salad.

In any case, thanks for writing this up. I look forward to your next adventure!

Depends on what the tech issue is. Two hours seems excessive as hell, but for the others, there a lot of items that can pop up well after the push. Usually the delay is a matter of getting MCC to Ok a DER so they can procede inside SOP (and legally of course). Otherwise, back to the gate you'll go.

Great report very thorough and analytical. I flew AA from PVG to ORD in F not long ago and wanted to see if anything has changed since there was so much hype.
I can honestly say that most things look much the same except for the seat and extra outlets. I would say that the seat looks actually narrower in comparison to the old one. I agree with privacy issue - if they want you to change to pajamas you should have more privacy.
I also agree that there is really nothingextra (besides the ticket price) that makes the F class much different from J.
I also agree that the Admiral Club membership is a waste of money.

Nice report, looks like AA is really stepping it up!

One question though, the suite has the red, white, and yellow jacks, for AV video input. Does that mean you could plug in a game console or computer and use the IFE as a monitor? That would be an awesome feature.
