Introduction

Hello everyone and welcome to part 3 of this USA trip series I am in at the moment,

For part 1 featuring my first 2 flights on SAS’ “new” A320 please see here:
USA Trip Pt. 1: Getting Started!: AMS-CPH-GVA (by adamspotter Apr 14 2013 in Trip Reports)

For part 2 featuring a scenic early morning flight across the Alps on a Darwin Saab2000, an uncomfortable hop across the pond with Alitalia and my first US Domestic flight (of this trip) on DL please see here:
USA Trip Pt. 2: Crossing The Pond: GVA-FCO-JFK-ATL (by adamspotter May 2 2013 in Trip Reports)

This part will concentrate on my ATL-LAX flight.

As already mentioned before, this series will be split into 13 different parts:

Part 1: AMS-CPH-GVA
Part 2: GVA-FCO-JFK-ATL
Part 3: ATL-LAX
Part 4: LAX-BOS
Part 5: BOS-EWR-MCO
Part 6: MCO-SAN
Part 7: SAN-LAX-HNL
Part 8: HNL-KOA-OGG-HNL
Part 9: HNL-LAX-PDX
Part 10: PDX-SEA-BOI-SMF
Part 11: SMF-SFO-ATL
Part 12: ATL-JFK-VCE
Part 13: VCE-ZRH-AMS

As many of you know Delta operates their mighty 777-200LR six times a week between ATL-LAX which continues on to (or comes from) Sydney. Knowing I would be in ATL, I saw this as a great opportunity to log this nice variant of the 777 without needing to fly a long range.
I looked up the fare on this particular flight for January the 24th, and as it was reasonable enough I immediately booked it! Leaving ATL at 08:10 and arriving in LAX at 10:00.
Another inspiration to book this flight was Planehunter’s fantastic report, which took this same flight & type v.v.:

Thursday January 24

In part 2 I left you falling asleep in my hotel room after a very long day of flying which ended in a greet meet with a local a.netter.
As already mentioned in part 2, my hotel for the night is the Wellesley Inn Atlanta Airport. The room isn’t in the very best condition but nevertheless perfectly fine for the 50EUR I paid.
After a solid 7 hours of sleep the alarm clock goes off and I am wide awake at 06:00. The usual morning rituals follow and before heading back downstairs I quickly take some pictures of my room:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06298_zpsf70d33dc.jpg

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06299_zpsd7a96918.jpg

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06297_zpsb1b50a5a.jpg

I head downstairs, check out, and wait for the 06:30 hotel shuttle to arrive. The shuttle arrives 5 minutes late which gets me at the airport around 06:45. I tip the driver and head into the terminal.

Check In

I have already checked in online so all I need to do now is print my BP and drop my bag off. Once entering the terminal I head over to one of the many SSKs which successfully spits out my BP after entering in my confirmation number.
Dropping my bag off only takes a couple of minutes as it is my turn right away. The friendly agent tags my bag to LAX and wishes me a pleasant flight.
Security also doesn’t take too long and I am through in 10 minutes without any problems.
With about half an hour to go before boarding time I decide to head towards the gate. My flight will be departing from the newish International Terminal Concourse F. I have only rushed through here once before catching my late night flight back to AMS on KLM back in November.
I take the plane train (what a cheesy name) to concourse F which is the last stop:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06300_zps9d32eb23.jpg

After passing through every other concourse, I reach concourse F and head upstairs:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06301_zpsfd85de8c.jpg

I quite like the design of this new concourse and it is still nice and quiet this morning:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06302_zps901f3bf9.jpg

Gate for this morning’s flight is F6:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06303_zps21194967.jpg

For the remainder of the time I connect to the WIFI (at a cost) and wait for boarding to begin.

Boarding

My beautifully decorated BP for this flight:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06312_zps327cee7c.jpg

Once again boarding is announced bang on time at 07:30. There are a lot of SkyPriority passengers on this flight so it takes a while before zone 1 is announced. Once it is announced I head towards the gate, get my BP scanned and after being wished a pleasant flight I head into the jetway.

On Board

ATL-LAX
DL110 // 53J
B777-232LR Delta // N702DN
08:13-10:36

At the entrance of the aircraft I am welcomed on board by 2 female FAs and directed to use the second aisle and take a right. From here I head almost all the way to the back to my seat, 53J:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06304_zpsb6f188ff.jpg

Great legroom here!:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06305_zpsb0f1f30f.jpg

The closer to the aisle you get, the tighter the legroom:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06307_zps5082ae56.jpg

All the window shades are closed:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06308_zps7bb10ade.jpg

The PTV is showing different advertisements:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06309_zps94902f00.jpg

The plane slowly fills up, flight load will eventually be all full at 100%. This is the view once I open my window shade :

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06314_zpsaacbb637.jpg

Our neighbor N1501P:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06315_zps9b4aea08.jpg

The majority of the cabin crew consists of females in different ages. They can best be described as friendly, getting their jobs done with a smile every now and then.
Once the door is closed (at 08:05) one of the female FAs comes on the PA welcoming us on board flight 110 with destination LAX. The usual announcements follow and an announced flying time of 4 hours and 12 minutes.
The pilot follows shortly after with another nice welcome on board and an announced flying time of 4 hours and 41 minutes. Hmm which one is it? (more on this later)

Pushback commences 3 minutes late at 08:13:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06316_zps1f3ae8a4.jpg

Meanwhile the safety demonstration is being played:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06317_zps0782bba6.jpg

After being released we taxi to runway 26L:

Take Off

We reach the runway at 08:20 and start (a powerful) take off 5 minutes later after waiting for a couple of company aircraft to depart:

The flight slowly progresses while I explore the IFE system. The system hasn’t changed a bit since the last time I explored it (last summer). The only (obvious) difference is the renewed movies and TV shows. For a detailed report on the system please see here: USA Vacation Part 1: Delta Long Haul: AMS-BOS In Y (by adamspotter Aug 19 2012 in Trip Reports):

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06338_zpsff6942a8.jpg

The moving map is quite poor:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06341_zps1df5d4c8.jpg

Although the info page is quite nice:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06340_zps6ad9c253.jpg

Above Alabama by now with 3 hours and 48 minutes to go at FL380:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06348_zps9fc80d51.jpg

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06351_zps60d06375.jpg

These irritating pop up commercials are also still there:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06356_zps34e075fd.jpg

After exploring the movies section a bit I decide to watch The Watch (pun intended), which turns out to be quite a dumb movie IMHO:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06357_zps976c7a28.jpg

There isn’t anything interesting to see outside except for clouds, clouds and even more clouds:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06358_zpsb81900ac.jpg

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06359_zps28e748fb.jpg

Meanwhile the crew come about the cabin offering the drink/snack service & BOB. I am looking forward to trying the maple honey turkey and cheddar croissant, but once they finally reach my row they have already run out of everything! This is quite poor IMO and leaves me quite disappointed as I haven’t had breakfast yet. So this morning my breakfast consists of a pack of pretzels with an OJ:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06363_zps562b1283.jpg

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06364_zps1195a79d.jpg

I finish The Watch and while looking outside I realize the clouds have disappeared. That must mean we are in Texas!:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06366_zps1b428f1b.jpg

Yes we are, and still at FL380 with 2 hours to go:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06373_zps6a3881bf.jpg

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06370_zpsa4609330.jpg

Next I decide to watch Wedding Crashers, which is a much better movie than The Watch:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06374_zpsd43813c0.jpg

Some beautiful effects on the ground:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06375_zpsf0b30ef4.jpg

The crew once again come about the cabin offering another drinks/snacks service. This time I get a pack of salty peanuts together with a Ginger Ale, cheers PH!:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06377_zps56e967c1.jpg

Once we start descent the FO comes on the PA announcing our descent into LAX and mentioning that due to strong winds (bad weather) we will be landing from the west, which is quite rare at LAX. This means we will have to fly past Los Angeles and over the ocean before turning back towards LAX. This also means we will have a longer flying time but still expect to land on time. I am happy to hear this, as I only have a 2 hour connection to my next flight which isn’t on Delta.

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06380_zps478eaa52.jpg

It also starts to get quite bumpy:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06381_zpsa2224aea.jpg

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06382_zpse520db2f.jpg

Goodbye sun!:

Landing

It gets so bumpy by now that it is practically impossible to take any decent pictures. Before I know it we are on final approach to runway 7R after a couple of sharp right turns:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06384_zpsbc6d9647.jpg

Over the beach, what a bad weather!:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06390_zpsa416e381.jpg

And touchdown at 10:00, bang on time!:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06391_zps3f207b01.jpg

I’m pretty sure we spray up quite some water from the runway:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06392_zpsf80a6b09.jpg

We exit 7R and taxi to our gate:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06393_zps198ef935.jpg

Crossing runway 7L:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06394_zps3f825f5f.jpg

Instead of taking a left towards terminal 6 we take a right which can’t mean anything good:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06395_zpsaad4d09d.jpg

And sure enough the pilot comes on the PA explaining that an Alaska aircraft is still occupying our gate as it has gone tech and a mechanic is fixing the problem, he has no idea how long it will take and apologizes. Meanwhile we head all the way to the end of the tarmac and park here for the time being:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06396_zps7932cb02.jpg

The pilot does a good job at updating us on the situation every 5 minutes. The longer it takes the more irritated he sounds and he is very apologetic each time. Time slowly passes by and as it is now 10:20 I am starting to get nervous. My next flight will be departing at 12:10 from a whole other terminal.
I guess the pilot has had enough of it as he very slowly starts taxiing towards the terminal despite announcing we still have to wait.

Even the 757 looks small from this beast!:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06399_zps7ca2c9bc.jpg

This one looks much smaller!:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06400_zps3d9f2d02.jpg

Meanwhile the pilot finally comes on the PA (at 10:30) announcing that the Alaska aircraft has left the gate so we can slowly head over there now. I am feeling quite relieved, although still a bit nervous.

A nice line of American Eagle’s:

We finally arrive at terminal 6:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06407_zps8c72e893.jpg

69A will be our gate:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06408_zps14978b02.jpg

The pilot once again comes on the PA asking for just a little more patience as we need to be towed the last couple of feet into the gate:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06409_zpsf0bdf9ac.jpg

We finally reach our final parking position at 10:36, 36 minutes behind schedule:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06410_zps637d9259.jpg

The 2L door is opened swiftly and the plane gradually starts to empty. Being seated in the back means it takes a while before I can start moving. I eventually make my way to the front and bid the crew farewell on my way out. Through the jetway and into the terminal, from here I rush over to the baggage claim. Once there it takes another 10 minutes before my bag arrives. It is now 10:55, so I head outside and rush to one of the other terminals.
Which terminal? Which airline will I be flying on next? And will I make it/will my bag make it? Stay tuned for the next part and those questions will be answered!

Conclusion

Once again Delta provided a nice and comfortable ride. Great legroom and the PTV was another plus (although expected on this aircraft). The 777-200LR is such a nice and powerful aircraft, can’t wait to try it out on a real long haul flight.
The one thing I fault Delta is that there weren’t any breakfast options available once they reached my row. I know I was seated close to the back and they only have a fixed amount in stock. But to be honest I didn’t see all to many people buy something and they already ran out about 5 rows ahead of me. This is quite poor especially on a 4+ hour flight in the morning.
Both ATL & LAX are great airports IMO, especially due to the busy traffic!

This will conclude part 3 of this series. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this report and I sure hope you enjoyed it! Feel free to leave a comment or ask a question, I would really appreciate that!

Stay tuned for part 4!

Cheers and take care,

Hi Brendan... as always a fantastic TR. Yes the new Concourse F in ATL is quite nice and looks so different from the others. Glad you made that flight. I cannot agree with you more of the catering. It should be down to a science by now. That is quite a long flight and they can over cater it as it can be used on another flight. I do love that they list the ship number on the AVOD screen on these planes. Cannot wait to see the rest. Cheers, Will

great report, and great that you got to experience the 77L on such a short hop.

Is it unusual to land into LAX from the east? I have always always landed on the 24s and 25s.

Also, did they have no other available gates or remote stands they could park the aircraft at?

No. Perishables are not re-used on another flight even if it's same day. If it's fresh (like the BOB stuff that's not a snack box) it is thrown out (or eaten by catering/ ground crew   ) upon arrival.

Nice to see the next report in this series and especially since it's on a 77L, which is my favorite aircraft.

DL looks nice but too bad with the pop-up ads on the PTV, that's got to be very annoying. Too bad they also ran out of hot meals on the flight.

Very cool that you got to land from the west in the day time; VERY rare maybe two-three days out of the year they do that.

Great next part of your US series. Nice that you were able to catch the 772LR. I've seen that beauty in SYD after the end of its very long flight. Great to get a westerly landing at LAX as well - very rare. Sorry the weather was not so good for your arrival - that did not look very common LAX weather at all. Looking forward to the next part. I really like it. So light and airy and shiny and new.

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
My beautifully decorated BP for this flight:

Terrible, the way these collectors items are defaced
Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
The pilot follows shortly after with another nice welcome on board and an announced flying time of 4 hours and 41 minutes. Hmm which one is it? (more on this later)

Happened to me on SQ once, when the AKL flight became 50minutes shorter in the space of 5 minutes (although I was quite happy about that).

The Japanese Sky magazine:

There’s enough demand to translate it into Japanese? Wow.

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
I am looking forward to trying the maple honey turkey and cheddar croissant, but once they finally reach my row they have already run out of everything! This is quite poor IMO and leaves me quite disappointed as I haven’t had breakfast yet. So this morning my breakfast consists of a pack of pretzels with an OJ:

What a shame that they sold out of what you wanted. A pack of pretzels for breakfast isn’t very substantial. Surely with BOB the idea is to make money and as you say with a 4hr flight at that time of day I’m sure a lot of people are hungry.

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
The pilot does a good job at updating us on the situation every 5 minutes. The longer it takes the more irritated he sounds and he is very apologetic each time. Time slowly passes by and as it is now 10:20 I am starting to get nervous. My next flight will be departing at 12:10 from a whole other terminal.

That must be the most frustrating & nerve racking experience. To be on the ground, with a connection to catch and you can’t get off the plane!

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
This one looks much smaller!:

That’s because it is
Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
It is now 10:55, so I head outside and rush to one of the other terminals.
Which terminal? Which airline will I be flying on next? And will I make it/will my bag make it? Stay tuned for the next part and those questions will be answered!

Oooh, such a cliffhanger!

Happy flying

Hello Brendan,

Good to follow this next episode and what better than a (near) TATL crossing a on T7!

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
I saw this as a great opportunity to log this nice variant of the 777 without needing to fly a long range.

Pun intended

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
all the way to the back to my seat, 53J

This is in my own experience the 1st time to see a longhaul plane equipped with leather seats iso fabric ones.

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
All the window shades are closed:

Huh, what for?

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
The “Eats” menu

What a stupid name for a menu... How were the prices?

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
These irritating pop up commercials are also still there

Really? That's quite annoying. I thought that would only be on regular American TV? Not!

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
but once they finally reach my row they have already run out of everything!

Serioulsy? And how full or empty was the plane? That's really bad considering the flight's length.

Hi IrishAyes

Quoting IrishAyes (Reply 24):
I like this TR of Delta

Thanks a lot
Quoting IrishAyes (Reply 24):
but I'm upset that you did not get a chance to try out Buy-On-Board. How did you manage to stay alive without having eaten for that long?

By eating a pack of pretzels & peanuts
Quoting IrishAyes (Reply 24):
Delta seems like a great airline, but they don't offer me much in CHI

no they dont unfortunately..

Quoting IrishAyes (Reply 24):

Hi Hannah

Good to read part 3 of your US adventure and well done on catching the 777 on this leg .

Thank you very much, yes I was very happy to have logged it..

Quoting infodesk (Reply 25):
You’re certainly racking up those Skyteam segments!

It's crazy isn't it? I already have 31 segments this year..

Quoting infodesk (Reply 25):

Only in the USA!

There’s enough demand to translate it into Japanese? Wow.

Delta has quite a big market in Japan, at DTW announcements are even made in Japanese!

Couldn't agree with you more.. About everybody in the rows behind me also wanted to order something.. They could've made a lot more money

It sure was! For a while I thought my whole trip was going to be screwed up..
