Hello and welcome to my 5th trip report of the year and 7th overall.

It was that time of the year again when I would be flying back home from college.My tickets had been booked in december it self and I had got myself a pretty good deal for a business class ticket. I had departed for the states back in January. Here is the trip report for that segment.

DEL-FRA-ATL On J Class With Lufthansa (by planiac787 Jan 11 2013 in Trip Reports)

Now I wanted to kick start my summer in a great way and what could be better than flying the 747-8i again.  

Initially I was scheduled to fly out on the 7th of may but since my exams were getting over early I decided to get back home even sooner. I called the Lufthansa call center and got my tickets changed after paying a sum of 250 usd. I did not really want to pay the amount but my dad still insisted I come back home earlier than scheduled.

Here is the flight path I took.

Day Of Departure.

Now in my head I had imagined this day multiple times. Here is how it looked in my head.
It would be a nice sunny day and I would go out for a fancy lunch with my friends, have some champagne and then would leave for the airport. Well you know things usually dont go as planned and the same thing happened with me. For starters it was a terribly cloudy day and that kind of spoiled my mood.Then one of my friends called and asked if I could help him move out of his dorm. Being a good friend I did the needful of helping my buddy moving out. The situation became more chaotic because 2000 more students were also moving out and at the same time it was pouring cats and dogs. Wow..
What a mood killer I tell you... Well just my luck I guess..

At around 2:45 PM I left for the airport. My flight from Atlanta to Frankfurt (lh 445) was scheduled to depart at 5:55 Pm.
I reached the airport at 3:15 pm and hired a porter to help me with my baggage as I could see no trolleys in the departure area. As the porter was helping me with the luggage I saw the lufthansa 343 arriving from frankfurt as lh 444. Beautiful beast I tell you. It was even more surprising to see that Lh had sent in the 343 with the star alliance livery. (Y)

Check-in

Check-in was a breeze as there was no one in the business class check-in desks. The lady behind the counter did her job efficiently but lacked a little warmth. When asked she told me that it would be a full flight today with no vacant seats.
However this was not the case. (Hmm). Another thing I found surprising was that I was offered no lounge invitation.I did not bother to ask but yet it was surprising. If you go the lufthansa website and go lounge finders,no lounge will show up for business class passengers travelling out of atlanta. If you are first class or senator status then there is a lounge. Not cool lh...not cool.

After my bags were through checked-in to delhi I made my way towards the security check.

About the Airport

To be very honest I think the Atlanta Airport is one of the best I have seen in America.The international terminal boasts of impressive duty free shopping,great eateries,fine architecture and one huge delta sky club lounge.

Lounge

My next target would be the Delta Sky club lounge. Now I knew I was not flying delta but I thought I could still get in using my amex but apparently you must also be travelling delta to use there lounge. Oh well! I decided to get the day pass which was another 50 usd. The lounge was the second biggest delta lounge in the airport and could hold 350 guests. It was equipped with a full service bar where most drinks were free. Only the "Premium" brands were charged for.
The internet connection was slow but still tolerable. I found myself a comfy corner and began surfing the net.

So after spending a good 45 minutes in the lounge I decided to explore the terminal a little. The lounge was nice but the Lh lounge at the frankfurt was better.

Boarding was announced at 5:10 pm with families and people on wheelchairs boarding first.Ten minutes later business class passengers were asked to board.It was done in an orderly manner and I made my way to my seat 1A.

The cabin was in immaculate and very clean condition.It looked very soothing to the eyes which was great.The aircraft had been delivered to lh brand new on 2 december 1993,which is almost 20 years back.The crew were busy getting every to there seat and then serving the pre-departure drinks. Menus were also handed out and soon the pilot announced that boarding was complete.It was then I realized that the J class cabin was only around 65% full. Y class though looked packed.We pushed back around 5:55 Pm and taxied to the runway.

After a 15 minute taxi we reach the runway and the power engines roar. We are soon in the air.

I had ordered a special meal since I am a vegetarian. I had gone in for the hindu vegetarian meal. After the first drink service my special meal was served to me. The starter consisted of a chick pea salad which was nothing great.

The main course consisted of Indian style potatoes cooked in certain masalas(spices) and peas. Again it was nothing great.But since I had not eaten anything the whole day (thanks to my friend who needed help moving out) I quickly finished my meal.

The meal service ended at about 8:00 Pm and since I had not gotten much sleep in the past few days I decided to sleep off. Now the seats are angled lie flat so I kept on sliding from the sleep position but I still managed to pull off about 4 hours of uncomfortable sleep.

The Breakfast service began when we were only 1 hour 30 mins away from Frankfurt.

The Crew on this flight were good.Nothing extra ordinary but still good.I read numerous reports on this websites where people say that they had the nicest people as there F/A's and that made there flight even better. I dont know if I have too high expectations but I am still on the look out for that sort of crew. But taking nothing away from lh,they did a good job.

After landing ahead of schedule we docked at our gate.It was quite a long walk from the gate to the security area where I re cleared it. After that I made my way to lh lounge because I had a 4 and a half hour wait before my next flight.

The frankfurt airport IMO is a great airport to transit by. I usually fly BA and to be honest I am sick of heathrows T5.
I think frankfurt airport got along a welcome change and I was impressed. There are so many things to do here. One will just never get bored. There are so many opportunities for spotters to click photos,crazy amount of duty free shopping and eateries from around the world.I think these things make a great airport experience and I had a fantastic time.

Boarding was announced at 1 Pm for this 1:45 Pm flight.Once again families and people on wheelchairs were boarded first. First class and Business after and then finally economy.

I had once again chosen a seat on the upper deck of this 748. It gives you a private jet feel and i was really looking forward to it as usual.

When I asked for some cappuccino,the F/A told me that it was only available for first class passengers.

After the meal service got over 2 hours into the flight, I was already yawning and was getting ready to pass out.
The new business class beds are big improvement over there old product but still I had problems with the leg rest area. Because of its shape and tiny area my legs kept hitting the divider which woke me up a couple of times. Other than that the bed is perfectly comfortable for a few hours of good sleep. I slept exactly for 3 hours and got up when only 2 hours of the flight remained. I browsed through the IFE list and decided to watch some big bang theory. A small snack was served when 90 minutes were left. Now this the point where Lh kind of lost the plot. For the small snack I was served the exact same meal as before which I had for lunch.The only thing they changed was the color of the cottage cheese the taste remained the same. I was in no mood to have the same stuff so I left the meal untouched. The dessert which is an indian dish in this case was also rock solid.I think that was the first real let down in the trip.

The crew on this flight were definitely better than the ones on the lh 445 flight. Much warmer and friendly,although they did have a problem with me clicking too many pics but I guess thats normal from a security point of view. I am sure many of you have also been questioned.

Verdict.

Lh 445

Overall the atlanta-frankfurt flight was good. I dont have much to complaint. I think lh got me from point A to point B in a very robotic and efficient manner. The IFE however could do with some more options. I thought there international movie list sucked as there were hardly any options. Lufthansa is certainly a global carrier and there network route very clearly states that,but they almost must have the right amount of entertainment from the different countries they serve. Also they really need to introduce a lounge even for J class passengers. I found that unacceptable.

Aircraft: 8 ( Immaculate Condition , Very Clean)
Seat : 7 ( Comfortable but still angled lie flat)
IFE: 5 (Screen was ok but selection needs to improve )

Service: 7.5 (Pretty Robotic but still ok)

Lh 760

Much better flight than lh 445. Cabin crew much more friendlier and warm. Food more or less the same. IFE was good. Screen much bigger (15 inches) but selection still not up to the mark. Lh lounge in frankfurt was great.Seats much more comfortable. Small flaw which can be overlooked. Only one screw up with the second meal on the flight but the rest of the time lh was pretty good.Great take off and even better landing proves the talent and skill level of the lh pilots. Well done.
I was very happy with the on time performance i had on the both my flights. Bags came out pretty fast and I was on my way home.

FRA being my home airport, I can confirm it's a nice airport when you have a long layover, however some landside areas are pretty old and dark (less airside I thnk) and connecting can sometime involve long walks and takes some time. Not always convenient. But nie to hear you enjoyed your stay.

As for the catering, I think LH can afford to become a bit more inventive with their dishes. Presentation is somewhat sub-par. I've seen far superior on other airlines. Not that I've tried it, and taste is truly the factoid that matters, but LH should hold itself to higher expectations.

Also, disagree with you on the FRA layover. Frankfurt is terrible, IMO. One of my least favorite airports to transit through. I do think it has some redeemable qualities (i.e. the glass windows where you can see you plane taxiing in the reflection) or the diversity of a/c present, but not much else. The LH lounge looks fantastic.

Overall, if TK starts flying to ATL, I think you know where your calling is

The FRA-DEL flight appears to have a better amenity kit, and better catering than ATL-FRA flight, which was a bit longer (>1.5hrs). Glad to see LH put a good product on the DEL route - but the product out of the US looks very poor in comparison to the product to DEL.

As for the catering, I think LH can afford to become a bit more inventive with their dishes. Presentation is somewhat sub-par. I've seen far superior on other airlines. Not that I've tried it, and taste is truly the factoid that matters, but LH should hold itself to higher expectations.

Also, disagree with you on the FRA layover. Frankfurt is terrible, IMO. One of my least favorite airports to transit through. I do think it has some redeemable qualities (i.e. the glass windows where you can see you plane taxiing in the reflection) or the diversity of a/c present, but not much else. The LH lounge looks fantastic.

Overall, if TK starts flying to ATL, I think you know where your calling is

Yes it was surprising that lh never gave me a lounge invitation but the guy at the Dl lounge told me that there is a lh lounge in a different concourse and they would definitely let me in. So may be the lady who checked me in forgot?
The head phones were advertised as noise cancelling but as you can tell they were really not..but they were not really bad either..served the purpose just fine...The new J class is a BIG improvement over there old product and I quite enjoyed it this time around...The amenity kit on the atl-fra flight was definitely sad...Ugly looking and the contents were also not too interesting...The food should have been more inventive.. they were serving out the tried and tested stuff.. taste wise the food was nothing spectacular..but I could nt complaint.. I was hungry on both the flights so I gobbled everything pretty fast  ..
Well maybe I liked fra cause it was my first time transiting thru it...But I found sufficient things to do in my 4 hour 30 min layover...And yes no doubt on the TK part..  .. I am waiting when it does.. but I am planing on trying them soon..maybe del-ist-ord-atl...

Thanks for commenting.You are most certainly correct in your analysis of lh. It did get me from atl to delhi just fine but it lacks the finesse that all the carriers you just mentioned. I have not traveled on the A380 yet so I cant really comment much on the inside of the Aircraft. I plan to try it soon though. Food on both the segment was just fine. Nothing that got my taste buds really excited.

I think some people have forgotten the fact that the airline industry is no longer just travel oriented. The main principle of transportation of pax remains the same but at the same time it is linked to various industries such as hospitality etc.
Because of suck link ups carriers must offer more variety to the passengers to make them keep there loyalties towards only them. Also I dont think a vegetarian meal should be considered a special meal at all. In india it self you will that around 45 to 50% of the people are vegetarian. We all know India is a growing market most airlines wants to tap into. So if they want to gain a monopoly then they ll have to serve these so called "special" meals :P.

You are certainly right to express your opinion. I agree what you said in your comment above about Veg. meal. Any airline which want to keep hold of their customers, have to do something extra which is lacking in their rival. Meal and hospitality is one of the best thing by means of which airline can retain their pax. My wife and my family we love EK purely because of their ICE and Food on board. There must be thousands of people who pay attention towards these things before book any ticket...gone those days where people used to just sit on plane to go from A to B.

Terrific report btw - really enjoyed it. I remember the 'bad' old days, when LH sent its cramped, non IFE 747s and KL sent its non-IFE MD-11s. The moment 9W started flying from London, I dropped the Euro carriers. Now its usually 9W or TK for me. But yes, you're right. TATL products are ...not very good in general.

Hi Pradat,

Nice report on LH Business Class provided with many good pictures!
All in all, their J class product doesn't impress me here.. Getting the same meal twice is very poor! No lounge access in ATL is also quite poor considering you are flying business class!

100 % agree with your point! Thanks. I am sure lots of people look at the quality of service and on board product before choosing the airlines.

Thanks for the kind words. Yes they still send in those 747's to mumbai...no doubt on the 9w service...I love flying them domestically too...they provide consistent and good service..

Thanks buddy! Well i am not saying lh did a great job but still it was decent service..Yes it definitely missed the special touch one expects from them but I am not too upset...

And yes the star alliance livery was a nice surprise..Hopefully I ll get to sit on skyteam and one world liveries soon...
