This part will concentrate on my LAX-BOS flight.

Part 3: ATL-LAX
Part 4: LAX-BOS

Part 8: HNL-KOA-OGG-HNL
Part 9: HNL-LAX-PDX
Part 10: PDX-SEA-BOI-SMF
Part 11: SMF-SFO-ATL
Part 12: ATL-JFK-VCE
Part 13: VCE-ZRH-AMS

Virgin America is an airline I have been wanting to sample for quite some time now, but I never got to it whenever I was in the US. Knowing I was going to pass through LAX (and knowing LAX is one of VXs hubs) I saw this as a great opportunity to finally try them out. I immediately looked up fares to different destinations on the east coast from LAX, and found a great deal on their LAX-BOS route. I immediately booked it and pre-selected my seat also.
I was very much looking forward to trying this new airline but (for those who followed part 3) will I catch my original flight? Just wait and see!

Thursday January 24

I am at LAX, terminal 6 to be exact. I just got off my delayed Delta flight and quickly retrieved my bag at the baggage claim (see part 3). It is 10:55 and my next flight on Virgin America departs at 12:25. As many of you know VX operates out of terminal 3, so I quickly head outside and walk to T3 as fast as I can passing by the TBIT. I reach terminal 3 at 12:15 and quickly head inside.

Check In

As usual I had already checked in online so all I need to do now is print my BP and drop my bag off. I find the VX check-in desk and am greeted with some loud pop music, nice! I approach one of the vacant SSKs, type in my confirmation number and the machine successfully spits out my BP after paying $25 for my bag. I join the baggage drop off line and 5 minutes later my bag is tagged to BOS by a friendly agent.
Security is a bit slow and I am eventually through in 20 minutes without any problems. As I am still feeling very hungry, and have 10 minutes until boarding begins (at 11:55), I grab a quick bite to eat at the Burger King.
After quickly finishing my Whopper menu I head over to gate 35 to see which plane will be taking me to the east coast:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC064112_zps2bc192e6.jpg

It is N626VA, also known as “Unicorn Chaser”. This 6,5 year old A320 was delivered to VX factory fresh on 11/07/2006.
Meanwhile this big boy comes taxiing by:

Boarding

Quite an interesting looking BP for this flight:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06413_zpsa5bfc643.jpg

Once again boarding is announced bang on time, at 11:55. Boarding is done in different groups starting at A, I am in group D. Nevertheless my group is called for boarding swiftly and I make my way towards the gate. The gate agent scans my BP and wishes me a pleasant flight as I head into the jetway.

On Board

LAX-BOS
VX1370 // 19F, 25A after take off
A320-214 Virgin America // N626VA
12:25-20:26

While entering the aircraft I am greeted by a young and great looking female FA and head into the aisle. First impression of the cabin is a very good one: clean, spotless and in excellent condition with some fun mood lighting!
I head to my assigned seat 19F and get settled in after putting my belongings in the overhead bin. The windows have some sort of tint in them:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06414_zps4b83f86a.jpg

Nice mood lighting:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06415_zpsf0277c26.jpg

Legroom is good:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06417_zps849fdbca.jpg

Clean and spotless seatback!:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06418_zpsfaaf5783.jpg

Some more traffic passes by:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06419_zpsff4ec3e5.jpg

The doors are already closed at 12:15. Flight load is not even half full at around 40%, I spot a bunch of empty rows in the back and figure I will head back there after take-off as I have a neighbor in the aisle seat.
Cabin crew on this flight consists of 3 females. All young, good looking and getting their jobs done although nothing special.
While 2 FAs prepare the cabin for departure the other one comes on the PA welcoming us on board followed by the usual announcements. Announced flying time is 4 hours and 27 minutes.
Once the FA is done the pilot also comes on the PA with another nice welcome, some flight information and wishing us a pleasant flight.

While still on stand the safety demonstration is being played:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06420_zpse6065d68.jpg

Pushback commences at 12:25, bang on time:

While waiting to be released this big beauty comes taxiing by. The SkyTeam livery is for sure my favorite one out there!:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06423_zps971d670d.jpg

Shortly after, another SkyTeam member comes taxiing by:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06425_zpse161d951.jpg

After being released we taxi to runway 6R. Having just experienced a rare landing from the west, I now get to experience a rare take off to the east:

We reach 6R at 12:35 and start take off immediately:

I am seated on the right side and am provided with some great views of LAX:

Through the clouds:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06444_zpse903450d.jpg

Some mountains come into view, shame the clouds are covering most of it:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06449_zpsf20ef751.jpg

The seatbelt sign is switched off, so I grab my belongings and head to the back. I settle into seat 25A which gives me a nice and private feeling as I have the whole row to myself and barely anybody in the rows ahead of me. At least for the first 2 hours as a very sick boy takes the row next to me after throwing up in his seat up front.

My new view outside:

Seatpocket Contents

Before exploring the IFE system, I take a quick look at the seatpocket contents which consists of the safety card..:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06485_zps0c02f7cb.jpg

I eventually find the map and see that we are above Utah by now at FL370. The map itself is quite poor and can certainly use some improvements:

Meanwhile the crew come about the cabin offering the complimentary drinks service. If you want any food or snacks you can just order them whenever you want by using your PTV. Once one of the FAs reaches my row, I order a Sprite:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06495_zpsa76d82c3.jpg

I explore the TV show section a bit more and decide to watch a couple episodes of Hawaii Five-O free of charge:

Outside the clouds disappear every now and then providing some nice views of the beautiful landscape down below:

By now I decide to order some snacks, I order a bag of chex mix some chocolate chip cookies and a Ginger Ale. After swapping my credit card it is brought to me quickly:

It is slowly starting to get dark outside:

Above Iowa by now:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06508_zps7f195d8c.jpg

Unfortunately, it is getting too dark to be taking pictures outside:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06509_zpsdadb8bb2.jpg

The flight slowly progresses while I play a couple of games on my laptop, my power outlet works just fine. We have just 877 miles to go now, passing between Chicago and Milwaukee:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06510_zps526bb749.jpg

Passing by Detroit:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06512_zps8ff9a364.jpg

I am feeling a bit hungry so try to order some food, I am too late though as we are already too close to BOS meaning it isn’t possible anymore.
Shortly after the FO comes on the PA announcing our descent into BOS and thanking us for choosing Virgin America.

I pay a quick visit to the lavatory which is still in good condition:

Landing

When I reach my seat the crew are already preparing the cabin for landing. We gradually descend towards BOS while I keep my head glued to the window enjoying all the beautiful lights below. We fly straight over Boston and make some very sharp turns over the bay. It is very windy tonight so the turbulence is quite moderate.
Soon enough we are on final approach to what I believe is runway 4R. We fight the wind all the way and smack down on 4R at 20:17, 28 minutes ahead of schedule.
We exit the runway and taxi to our assigned gate B38:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06520_zpsa944f6d1.jpg

We reach our final parking position at 20:26, still 19 minutes ahead of schedule:

http://i1068.photobucket.com/albums/u441/bjb020/bjb020s%20album%202/DSC06521_zps759a6733.jpg

With the plane not even being half full it empties out quickly and I bid the crew farewell on my way out. The terminal is quite deserted tonight and I make my way straight to the baggage claim. My bag arrives promptly and I immediately grab my winter coat as it is mighty cold outside.

Residence Inn Boston Logan Airport/Chelsea

With that all done I head outside and take a cab to my hotel for tonight: the Residence Inn Boston Logan Airport situated in Chelsea. The cab driver is a friendly guy and warns me about Chelsea being a very bad neighborhood. We have some more conversations and before I know it we are at my hotel. I pay the driver and head inside.
The friendly female receptionist checks me in without any problems and I head upstairs to my studio room which has more than enough space just for me:

While getting settled in the friendly receptionist calls to ask if everything is ok and to my satisfaction, top notch service here!
The WIFI connection works very well so I surf the web a bit and check my Facebook while watching some college basketball on TV. Soon enough the jetlag starts to kick in and I fall in a well deserved sleep.

Conclusion

This was my first time flying Virgin America and I have to say I am quite impressed. From the clean and fresh cabin with all the mood lighting to the young and good looking FAs (not something you see much here in the US). Although the FAs could have been a bit warmer.
I like their service concept of ordering your food on your PTV which is brought to you promptly. This way you can choose whatever you want whenever you want.
The flight load was a bit worrying and explains why VX is bleeding money. Nevertheless I definitely hope they stay alive as they are the proof that flying domestic in the US still can be fun and relaxing! I have more flights booked on them in September and am definitely looking forward to that!
The Residence Inn is a great hotel to stay at with top notch service! The rooms are in excellent condition and the staff is very friendly, definitely recommend it!

This will conclude part 4 of this series. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this report and I sure hope you enjoyed it! Feel free to leave a comment or ask a question, I would really appreciate that!

Stay tuned for part 5 featuring my BOS-EWR-MCO flights!

Cheers and take care,

Amsterdamspotter or Brendan Berkhout as known on Facebook.

Hi Brendan,

Nice report about your VX flight.
The interior seems fine, but i think 8$ for one movie just to watch is a bit too much, isnt there a flat rate for the IFE like on some other airlines like FlyDubai?

Thanks a lot for sharing
Cheers,
Johannes

Hi Brendan!

Thanks for another great report in this series!

It looks like a great flight on VX and the cabin looks very fresh still.

Even though the map wasn't to your liking, at least they had an moving map, which is not very common on narrow body aircraft.

Would be nice to try VX some time and hopefully they will be around for a long time but I don't think they are doing so well.

Looking forward to the next report!

Hi Brendan, great report again! Glad to hear you made your connection. This is one epic trip indeed, turning straight back East after arriving from LAX. VX is a great airline indeed, definately something different then the usual airlines. I only sampled them on a small SFO-SAN flight but still enjoyed it a lot. Looking forward to the next part!

Goedenavond Brendan,

Good to see the VX report up!

Definitely one of my favorite airlines from the USA, Virgin. There's something about it that makes flying special even if they charge for most things separately!

It seems you had an above average experience with them... as you say, sorry about the low load factor, from the airline's perspective.

I really like their IFE/Food ordering system.

Thanks for sharing, Brendan!

Hi Brendan

Great report - thanks for the next part of your travels in the US.

Loved the departure shots from LAX.

VX looks like a nice experience - they are certainly a cut above most other US carriers. Great that you could spread out a bit too on what is quite a long domestic flight.

Thanks again - looking forward to the next sector.

I have flown on a DL 738 before and I vaguely remember what theirs looked like but I remember I liked theirs better than B6 as well. I believe VX's moving map is google maps. I noticed that too. Maybe a typo. I am sure he meant 11:15 as there is no way he would be able to check a bag at 12:15 or even much less check in and get a boarding pass!

I think that some mood lighting is indeed "moody" and pleasant, but here with Virgin America, you can tell that all they've really done is slipped pink sleeves over the fluorescent tubes for the sidewall lights, and maybe also purple ones for the ceiling lights. That's not really "mood lighting," per se, so much as it is, "colored lighting."

Also, the ashtray is required by federal regulation to be installed in the lavatory. That is so that, in the event someone breaks the law, they will put their cigarette butt in the ashtray, rather than try to extinguish it in the trash can, which causes catastrophic lavatory fires. Such a fire brought down an Air Canada DC-9 many years ago.

Anyhow, nice trip report; oddly, the nicest part of your journey seems to be the hotel in Boston!!!

The map itself is perfectly fine.. The irritating part was every time you want to zoom in, in stead of zooming in towards the plane it zoomed in somewhere else and I had to keep on scrolling up and down to find the plane again (I hope you understand what I mean ).. The reaction time also wasn't very fast..

Another nice trip report, thanks for sharing!

Thanks, glad you liked it
Quoting MSS658 (Reply 20):
VX is high on the list to try out as well, clearly a notch above the competition inside the US!

Definitely! Can only recommend them
Quoting AA737-823 (Reply 21):
Also, the ashtray is required by federal regulation to be installed in the lavatory. That is so that, in the event someone breaks the law, they will put their cigarette butt in the ashtray, rather than try to extinguish it in the trash can, which causes catastrophic lavatory fires. Such a fire brought down an Air Canada DC-9 many years ago.

I am aware of that, it was a sarcastic commentary..

Quoting AA737-823 (Reply 21):
Anyhow, nice trip report;

Thank you very much!

Quoting AA737-823 (Reply 21):
oddly, the nicest part of your journey seems to be the hotel in Boston!!!

Haha, it sure was a nice hotel

Thank you once again for commenting everyone!

cheers,

Brendan

Hi there Brendan, great report once more. I've been wanting to try out VX for quite a while now also, but they seem a little like VS as in they can talk the talk, but seem to struggle walking the walk. They don't seem too bad however, but that's about it from looking at this and other reports.

Nice of the receptionist at the hotel to phone you up to make sure everything was ok... Sure she wasn't after something?!

Hello Brendan,

Nice one once again! Quite the contrast though with the T7 you flew on in your previous story

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
Virgin America is an airline I have been wanting to sample for quite some time now, but I never got to it whenever I was in the US

That makes perfect sense to me

Hi Brendan,

So, I finally got round to reading the conclusion to your cliffhanger! Great news you made your connection. Virgin America create a good impression, I especially like the mood lighting. Your hotel looks nice too.

I reach terminal 3 at 12:15 and quickly head inside.

I'm glad that was a typo. Otherwise it would have been a very long way between terminals
Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
As I am still feeling very hungry, and have 10 minutes until boarding begins (at 11:55), I grab a quick bite to eat at the Burger King.

i'm not surprise you were hungry after your little bag of pretzels for breakfast!

Rellay super views indeed. I also like the in-flight ones you had, most impressive

Quoting adamspotter (Thread starter):
At least for the first 2 hours as a very sick boy takes the row next to me after throwing up in his seat up front.

Oh dear, that's not the sort of neighbour you really want

Very true, it's a shame to see them both struggling as they are decent airlines
Quoting jwhite9185 (Reply 23):

I guess it's about them you try them out yourself

I was first confused. I thought you flew the other way around and all these heavies at BOS, I thought wtf, all diversions or so. I found out though you left from LAX

Great report, and they look similar to VS domestic in the UK, the mood lights in the dark cabin came over too strong on me. I like the wingtip decoration very much

Regards
Eric

Still need to try VS domestic myself.. But from your report the mood lighting looks much brighter than on my flight!
