Hello all.   I was lucky to be invited to Princess Cruises new ship inaugural celebrations with a friend of mine who is also in the trade. We decided to book Aer Lingus flights from BHD-LGW and then take the train down to Southampton which is where the ship would be during the events.

After following the progress of the ships final preperation for being handed over the excitement began and I was very much looking forward to seeing it. Princess is a product I have never really got to know properly so this would be quite interesting for me.

On the Friday night I took the train to Belfast and stayed over at my friends house as he is only 10 mins from the Belfast City Airport. Our flight was the first one of the day so we got up at 4am got ready and then left the house.

Soon it was time to board so we made our way to the gate. No priority boarding was done and it was first come first served! A bit of a downside to be honest which needs addressed.

Soon boarding was complete and we made our way to the runway to take off. Very light load that morning.
With Flybe axing their route in March this will help EI no doubt.

After take off I decided I would by a breakfast. I was able to use my Irish Debit card and pay in Euro which was handy.

The flight went really fast and I was chatting to my friend. Soon it was time to land into LGW.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/PRIN1/file_zpsb07d6035.jpg

So we disembarked the aircraft and made our way to arrivals. The process was very quick and easy. Im loving LGW more and more each time I use it.

We then went to the train station and took the train from Gatwick Airport to Southampton Central. This took us around 1 hour 50 minutes.

We had a stroll around the city and I went to the model railway shop called Rons Lines where I bought a new train for my collection.

View from West Quay a Celebrity ship was also in port.

I have to say I was impressed with the interior and the way it was laid out. I like the colours and it felt homely.
The balcony was a decent enough size for two also.

This is the atrium area on the ship and I fell in love with it right away. Everyone commented on it and the photos dont do it justice. It was so well designed and the attention to detail was visable. You really need to be there to take in just how nice it is. During the time onboard I came here a few times to relax and have a drink etc..

My favourite place near the atrium and somewhere I could see myself coming daily for my coffee and cake.
The staff were so friendly also and we decided to take a light lunch here also.

Now this is the spa and the only thing I found a bit weird is that it was placed on deck 5. Normally the spa is on a high deck like 10-11. I did find this a bit strange but the spa itself was lovely.

Back outside and the cinema screen shows films called ''Movies under the stars'' at night. A nice concept whichis not new to cruise ships but I like it.

The new innovation for this ship is the Seawalk which goes over the edge of the ship. Now normally you wouldnt get me anywhere near this kind of thing but it actually wasnt too bad and I didnt feel sick.

So after a very eventful day we had to shower and put our Tux's on and go to dinner. We had been allocated a table for 5 with some cruise consultants from Cardiff and Swansea in Wales. We ended up having a great evening with them and lots of laughs.

The famous singer Lemar had been brought onboard to perform and everyone went on top deck to see him.
I have to say it was great and I really enjoyed it.

After that I met up with an old friend of mine who I had not seen for 4 years. The last time we met we were on a Arctic Circle cruise with Hurtigruten lines. We had kept in contact via Facebook so it was great to see him and we went to the shows inside the ship together.

After a while we headed to the train station and made our way to Gatwick Airport. Being a Sunday we had to change at Brighton but this was not too bad.

DATE: 09/JUN/13
AIRLINE: AER LINGUS
ROUTE: LONDON GATWICK - BELFAST CITY
CLASS: ECONOMY
SEAT: 24E/F
AIRCRAFT: AIRBUS A319
REG: EI - EPS Named ''Fergus''

Soon enough we arrived at LGW went to the Aer Lingus desk and got our boarding passes. We then made our way to the No.1 lounge. Now the No.1 lounge had become run down over my last visits so I was not expecting too much.

We made our way to stand 25 mins early and then disembarked the aircraft. We were through arrivals in no time at all and I then said goodbye to my friend and made my way to the train station to go home.

So thats the end of my report. I hope you enjoyed it . I have to say I loved the new Princess ship and will certainly look at doing a cruise on it next year. People will pick bits out of a new ship that they dont like and they feel is fashionable to dislike. Personally I prefer to enjoy the cruise and enjoy them all for their different designs/innovations etc..

The strong points that really stood out were the food and the staff. Thats a big part of a cruise for me and Princess did not dissapoint.

Aer Lingus performed well and this was my first time flying them out of BHD and the A319.

Thank you in advance for reading and your comments.

Kind regards

OA260 / Philip

Hi Phil,

Another stunning vessel, thanks again for sharing your experience. Also thank you for sharing your Noregian Fjord pictures from your previous TR very impressive!

Curious to know what locomotive you aquired

I hope EI sort out their legroom and boarding procedures out, perhaps a stern warning towards menzies (in BHD if I am not mistaken?) will set them back on course towards a constant quality service. I look forward to seeing BA's new lounge a nice boost for BHD.

Hi thanks glad you liked it. Well im just lucky that my hobby and my work enable me to enjoy these things. The A319s are a stable diet for EI at LGW these days. Its nice to see more varied metal at LGW too. The B787 was nice to see landing and parked up.

Hey mate,

Great TR on what looks like a truly stunning vessel. I'd love to get on her at some point in the very near future. Looks like all went well with the flights and connections, and you even managed to see the BY 787. I think it looks great in that livery.

Thanks again for sharing!

Howdy Philip,

Thanks for entertaining us with another ship prospection (see, I do get it right this time  ). My amazement with the stuff they old put in there keeps on growing. And you made me aware of the fact that EI has A319's  Wow! They seem like rather new ones, judging by the type of overhead panel.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
Aer Lingus use the BA lounge

That one looks very IKEA-esque. It will be better once refurbished hopefully!

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
Very tight legroom down the back in these Ex IBERIA cabins !

Is it really? I did have any issues on my latest EI flight but that was of course on their older A320 fleet.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
Also in port was the wonderful QM2 which Gareth and I sailed on back iin November from Southampton to
New York

From this side viewed it looks grand and majestic and much more classic. A real boat errr... ship!

Hey Nils

Wow Impressed you actually are getting better with each TR and saying SHIP lol...

Yes EI got Ex IB A319s hence the interior. The front rows are fine but towards the back its very tight.

Yes the BA new lounge will be very nice so I cant wait to see it this Summer.

Lemar is famous more so in the UK and had some great hits.

The QM2 is a lovely SHIP !! lol... Im sure given the chance of a day or 24 hours onboard you would love it! Maybe sometime

Looks a bit nicer than the Ruby Princess did, but not all the different decor wise. Oh well watch this forum mid-Jan 2014 for a review of the Sapphire Princess

Hey thanks alot glad you enjoyed it . Im sure if you went on it you would see the new enhancements and enjoy it. I was on board the Caribbean Princess which is an older one as you know and can certainly see the difference in terms of product. I can see where your coming from with the older fleet but this really is a game changer and I have to say Ive warmed to Princess alot more with this new one. Im very much looking forward to the review of the Sapphire. Ive actually got another one coming up in September but I cant for the life of me remember the ship LOL.. Too many ships !! Next month Im going on something Ive always wanted to try so watch this space

Thanks for reading and the reply. Much appreciated. I agree with you the B787 has not enticed me and I have no rush to fly it but most likely will at some stage. Id rather fly another B777 missing from my log and I know you will agree with that being the 777 king

I had the same conversation with Gareth as he loves the B787 and doesnt follow the A350 that much. I guess its down to personal preference.

Hi there Philip - another great look at a cruise ship!

Aer Lingus look a little disappointing on those IB A319's compared to their A320's. The Breakfast they serve onboard looks pretty good though - really should make another trip with them so I can try it... And the chocolate lounge in DUB!

The BA lounge looks pretty similar to the Flybe one next door. Very sterile. Good it'll be getting the BA treatment soon. Hopefully I'll be able to make it to BHD and give it a go before my silver status runs out - although that's not for a while yet!
