Crossing 66°N on the Norlandair Twin Otter! +F50

Intro

Hello everyone and welcome to my latest trip report!

This report’s main focus is on the Akureyri – Grimsey – Akureyri roundtrip I took last summer aboard a red Twin Otter of Norlandair (FNA). It also features a flight with Air Iceland from Reykjavik City Airport (RKV) to Akureyri.

I know this report is a bit of a hop back in time from my last reports but I’m planning on continuing with my Florida series after this report. I also have just completed a Keflavik – Denver – OKC – Chicago (both MDW and ORD) – MSPKEF trip and will probably have reports on that following the Florida series.

So how did this trip come to fruition? Well, my brother was playing on a football tournament in Akureyri and therefore I needed to choose between driving or flying north to see him play. Of course that was an easy choice and soon a seat onboard flight NY152 was confirmed.

Regarding the Twotter flights, up on arrival in AEY I saw one of FNA’s wonderful bright red Twin Otters sitting on the ramp basking in the sun. I immediately went over to their ticket office next door and checked fares for the next day. They were fairly reasonable and soon I had another flight ticket in hand along with a feeling of joy. Finally I had a chance to try the infamous “twotter”!

Route map, fairly simple this time:

The report

As my flight didn’t leave until 15:45, I decided to take a late lunch and therefore arrived at the airport at 15:00 sharp. Check-in starts 30 minutes pre-departure so I was earlier than needed but better safe than sorry.

Check-in area.

FIDS / FIAS – as you can see business to KUS is booming.

Departure holding area.

Little happening outside, only traffic was this Cessna.

Baggage claim is in the same area as the holding area. RKV is really small…

The only shop in the airport is this one. I bought some chocolate milk to take with me aboard along with a crossaint.

Gate 2-6 are boarded via the same door. You then walk through an outdoor corridor which you can see later in the report.

To my horror I got seat 7C (aisle). Thankfully I could contact the agent in time and got seat 13D in the back.

Soon after boarding was called and I was the first to walk outside to our aircraft.
TF-JMT was set to operate our flight today.

I walked the aforementioned walkway to the aircraft and turned once I reached gate 4 where our aircraft waited patiently.

Boarding.

http://i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s436/SRQKEF15/DSC02837_zpsf0898446.jpg

The cabin does show it’s age but the seats are still clean and pretty comfortable. My biggest pet-peeve abouth the F50 though is the window placement which is horrible! Only dwarfs can see through that window without breaking their neck!

Cabin. (sorry for the blurry picture)

Just chillin’

As I mentioned, not the best window to look out through.

Soon we started up and taxied to the runway. Runway 31 in use today.

Terrible window, but you can see I had a pretty nice view over the city (as all departures out of RKV have)

http://i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s436/SRQKEF15/DSC02868_zps47978c4b.jpg

The airport can be seen in the bottom right along with the Perla restaurant to its left. Kópavogur can be seen in the background.

Luckily 13C was vacant, so I had enough room to stretch out for this short 45 minutes flight.

Drinks and chocolates were served around halfway through. Soon enough the pilot came on the PA and announced our descent for AEY. Sure enough the nose was lowered. As we were landing to the north (rwy 01) we only took one small turn and were lined up.

Through the clouds.

I woke up the next morning, had breakfast and then headed over to Thorsvollur to watch some games of my brother’s. Around noon I left for the airport. My flight was leaving at 13:00 but at an airport as small as AEY showing up at 12:30 is more than enough.

My red Twin Otter, TF-NLD, looking absolutely stunning! Basking in the sun here north in Akureyri.

http://i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s436/SRQKEF15/DSC03004_zpse109db7e.jpg

At around 12.50 boarding was called. Load was 12/19 for a load factor of around 60 %. For comparison the flight back was loaded 16/19 so it seems FNA is doing pretty good on this short route.

Unfortunately at this point the battery in my camera ran out so I couldn’t catch the go-around that followed. Yes, you read right – go-around. Because communication between the pilot and the tower failed for some reason we had to go around at 500 ft. No problem – our pilot recognized the voice in the tower and just called him from his iPhone! True story. I guess in Iceland it’s true that everyone knows everyone! At least in small towns like Akureyri.

The 2nd attempt was successful after we got a landing clearance through the iPhone. We taxied to the ramp and quickly turned off our engines.

Conclusions

Air Iceland have just enough service for a 45-minute flight, drink service + a complimentary chocolate. Also, no matter how many times you fly it, it feels good going back up in the good ol’ Fokker.

Norlandair was really something different as expected. Their fancy red scheme looks really great and much better than many bigger airlines around the globe. Also, trying out the small beast the Twin Otter is had for long been a dream of mine. All in all, my best domestic trip to date (at least flying wise).

Thanks for reading!

Regards,
Sveinn

I'm really glad we have you here Sveinn so you can provide us with reports such as this. I've always been curious about Grimsey. I never thought that anyone would ever fly there and write a report. Stunning scenery and a very nice description of all the flights. I'm gonna bookmark this so I can come back and enjoy this very unique destination through your photos.

Thanks again,

Hey Sveinn,

Lovely report! Grimsey is such a tranquil and off the beaten track place and you got there in style on the Twin Otter, there really is no better way! Congrats on the 66°N crossing btw   Also the F50 was quite interesting. The F50’s I can relate to are those of Air Baltic and CityJet with a high preference for the latter ones.

Sorry Sveinn, but the F50 is one ugly airplane

Quoting SRQKEF (Thread starter):
y biggest pet-peeve abouth the F50 though is the window placement which is horrible! Only dwarfs can see through that window without breaking their neck!

I hear you! I have the very same problem with those windows, too low positioned.

Hi Svienn

Cool report! Your twin otter flights remind me of when I use to fly them between ANU and MNI, Awesome STOL Aircraft! These days im just stuck with boring BN-2 Islanders... (Its just not the same anymore...) Pretty cool you cross the Arctic Circle. Great pics of Grímsey, It looks like a nice small island, almost like mine , but with a lot less infrastructure.

Thanks for sharing this, I really enjoyed reading it

Hello Svein

Nice and exotic report, enjoyed the pics from northern Iceland and the artic!

Isn't this now a 757? Flew it 2007 between KEF and AMS.

Greetings Marc

Hi Marc, thanks for stopping by and for the kind words!

Well, it's complicated. TF-FIT was first a F50 but then in the late 90's all Fokkers were changed from TF-FI* to TF-JM* registrations to make room for more 757 regs. Then in 2005 Loftleidir Icelandic (a company under the Icelandair Group) bought it and started leasing it out. In 2007 Icelandair needed some extra lift so several LL planes such as FIT and the 767 TF-FIB came and operated FI flights (including your KEF-AMS flight). After that summer they went back to Loftleidir and got leased out again. I believe FIT is right now flying for Yakutia in Siberia but I could be wrong. If it's not in Russia it's probably flying for SBA out of Caracas in Venezuela.

Hi Sveinn,

What a great report. I really enjoy these little obscure routes to small places on little airlines.
Nice to have been above the Arctic circle, even though there was only a stick in the ground to let you know.

Quoting SRQKEF (Thread starter):
RKV is really small…

All the better for it I'm sure.

Quoting SRQKEF (Thread starter):
DC-3 model hanging in the ceiling

Nice touch. Reminds me of the check-in area at St. Marys (ISC) on the Scilly Isles.

Legroom is not great

Whoa that looks like a tight squeeze.

Quoting SRQKEF (Thread starter):
Eagle Air (FEI) Jetstream which was heading for Vestman Islands (VEY)

Argh, you really have some good opportunities for some nice flying up in Iceland!!

Quoting SRQKEF (Thread starter):
destination tomorrow is Grimsey

Perhaps this place should be twinned with Grimsby in the UK?!

Quoting SRQKEF (Thread starter):
Cockpit view

Looks like you could have just started her up and taken off yourself.

Make sure you do get yourself down to the Vestman islands and report it here. I'll look forward to reading that one.

Cheers

Hey Sveinn! Always good to see travels up north. To be honest, TRs in the USA just aren't quite as exciting, even with your outsider's perspective!

I flew the F50 AEY-RKV a few years ago. Looks like not much has changed - which is a good thing!
Akureyri-Reykjavik Domestic On Air Iceland (by Thule Nov 5 2009 in Trip Reports)

Of course, it's great to see the Twotter flight to Grimsey. From what I've heard, you're lucky you missed the invasion of terns and skuas!

Because communication between the pilot and the tower failed for some reason we had to go around at 500 ft. No problem – our pilot recognized the voice in the tower and just called him from his iPhone!

Classic Icelandic ingenuity! Anywhere else, this would've resulted in a diversion and delays...

Hey Sveinn,

Nice view of the North.

I hope to post my Icelandic report as well, soon. It will also feature some nature, though of a different sort, I suppose.

Anyway, terrific report. I still haven't gotten on a DHC-6 or on a J-31 (or anything in that 19-seat range)...

Too bad about all the bird poop on your book.

Cheers and thanks for sharing,
Alex

Super report Sveinn - what a great day for flying on the Twotter. That aircraft looked immaculate. Thanks for writing this one up - I really enjoyed it.

I've just done a Twotter too (my third Twotter experience after Air Moorea and British Airways) so hope to get to doing a report soon.

Thanks again - Palmjet

Cool report Sveinn, thanks for posting. I really fancy a trip back to Iceland. It was my first trip of the new Millenium, so it's been a while! Looks like you had some fantastic weather for your trip up north.

Awesome trip report, Iceland looks amazing as ever  The twotter looks almost new with that colourscheme from outside, and I agree with you about the F50 windows, not tall person friendly :')

Look forward to more of your trip reports

As soon as you can! Tourist numbers are rising so most of the beautiful places are nearly always full. Thankfully there are still some pearls that have yet to be "discovered" but there's only a matter of time before the hordes of tourists will find them.

Luckily I'm used to the terns as my local golf club has one of the largest tern settlements in Iceland.

Don't hesitate! Did you just fly a simple LHR-KEF-LHR or did you do it the a.netter way?

Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 17):
Looks like you had some fantastic weather for your trip up north.

Absolutely. Contrary to this summer's weather! We haven't even seen the sun for at least 3 weeks, just constant clouds and rain. It even snowed last Thursday...

Quoting eastafspot (Reply 18):

Hi eastafspot, thanks for reading! It is very noisy, noisiest commercial aircraft I've flown in by far! (Beside the DC-3).

Completely agree! Norlandair keeps their aircraft in great shape.

Sadly just the "normal" way. We got the old livery 737 LHR-KEF, then a 757 back (old or now c/s, can't remember). It was a great holiday, Iceland is amazing.
