HELLO AND WELCOME

to my 3rd tripreport here on a.net. In this report I will present my experience on KLM from Frankfurt via Amsterdam to Luxembourg as well as the airport of AMS and some lounges. Also, I will give you some impressions of my Intercity train ride from SCN to FRA.

Flying Blue!

BOOKING AND PREPARATION

After Air France confirmed the applications for status match I finally got gold on flying blue. So, after that, I thought about to fly on KL or AF somewhere to europe to find out what they offer for golds. I searched and found a quite interesting routing on momondo:
Outbound : FRA-AMS-LUX on KL
Inbound : LUX-CDG-FRA on Luxair and AF
The inbound flight would be on the 8th of may, the inbound I booked for someday in august, all this for a price of 160 €, which I think is very cheap, because normally you don't get LUX-AMS-LUX under 200€ on KL. I would get from SCN to FRA as usual on the train and back my brother would pick me up because he works just 5 mins away from LUX airport and would drive home to SCN in the evening anyway. So, again I saved money!
After booking the trip on the planes, I also booked my train ticket, this time not the very slow regional train which needs 3 hours for 150 KM, no this time I ''upgraded'' myself to the InterCtiy train, which takes only 2 hours (including 15 mins transit time in Mannheim), as well those trains have much better seats, in conclusion better in every way !

I now flew about 20 times from FRA but not even once from Terminal 2. In general this trip will be very good for my logbook:
3 new types (Fokker 70, ERJ 145, A318)
1 new airport (AMS)
1 new airline (KLM)

8th OF MAY

My routing today

As every time when I fly I have to get up very early, this time at 3.30 AM, because I had to get my train at Saarbrücken HBF (mainstation) at 4.40.
As mentioned, the ride on the train was very calm and comfy this time. As you can see in the pictures, the old IC trains just got refitted about 2 months ago with the the latest ICE seats, very good here.
The train departed exactely on time, but like every time on the Deutsche Bahn, I didn't arrive on time at my connecting station Mannheim, and had only had 3 mins to get to my ICE to FRA, but I got it luckily in the end.

Transit in Mannheim

I arrived at FRA long distance station at around 7.15 AM. I directely made my way up to Terminal 1 threw the long tunnel. I walked a bit around there as always when I am here. After about 5 mins, after I've seen everything, I walked upstairs in hall B to catch the so called Skyline to get to Terminal 2 where most of the non-Star Alliance or non LH-partners having their base, including KLM.

Inside the SKYLINE to T2

After arrived at T2, I made my way downstairs to check-in level, I've been mnay times here, but never departed from T2, so the first time today. In general, T2 is too huge if you ask me, even in rush hours they need only half of the counters, also schengen-airside was deserted. That means the total contrast to T1, where LH can't find enough gates espacially at the A-pier for their intra-europe operations.

T2, AF-KLM-AZ counters on the lefthand side

http://imageshack.us/a/img259/4986/dsc2959kopie.jpg

^ In this picture you might see many paople which are waiting for something. Not a very surprising event, they are waiting for the Emirates checkin to open, what else. Strangly there are about 100 people waiting even though the check in opens 40 mins later, but OK.

Other side of T2

I went for the AF group (icl. KL, AZ) counter just on the other side to pick up my boarding passes. I chose my seats online in advance, but no printout yet. I went for the Sky priority desk with nobody in front of me. For the first time, I had quite an ''interesting'' conversation with the lady behind the desk:

Me: ''Hello, I would like to collect my boarding passes for the KLM flight'' ,and handed over my Flying Blue card.

She: ''What is your final destination?''

Me: ''Luxembourg''

She: ''There must be a mistake because in your booking you connect to LUX today only 4 hours after you arrive in AMS ?''

Me: ''No, it is allright''

She: ''But you still live in Saarbrücken?''

Me: '' Yes (?) ''

She: ''I know Saarbrücken, why don't you take the car to get there it is only 1 hour to get there''

Me: '' I know''

After that I explained her a something about my hobby and about tripreporters, she said that she never heard of something like that. I think Markus haven't been around here yet   . I asked her also about the load and about the upgrade probability. She said it is very unlikely to get upgraded today because the load is too light with about 70 %. Too bad.

After that I made my way to security, no fast lane open today, but doesn't matter, there was no traffic at all. T2 D-Schengen airside is very boring, the only thing here is a duty free shop, no other shops or restaurants at all. Also, you cannot observe the operations on the apron well because the holding areas are seperate rooms between airside and outside, not good here. I have to say here in FRA I definetely prefer T1, well its owercrowded everytime, but much more interesting.

http://imageshack.us/a/img203/1567/dsc2974kopie.jpg
T2 airside

After I've seen everything of that part of T2, I headed for the Air France lounge, which is at the very end of the terminal. Quite funny, between T2 and T1 C there only is a light glasswall, you can directely look at gate C16, but if you want to connect from T2 to T1 you have to go out, take the skyline to T1 and you have to re-check-in, but well that are the rules..

I went inside the lounge and I found nobody at the desk, I waited 2mins and the agent arrived and scanned my BP. Again strange looks about my routing. It seems the lounge has only the agent which also serves and is reponsable for the buffet.
The lounge itself is quite nice, airy huge and very empty. It also has windows, but sadly in the wrong direction, you can look at a parking station of baggage cars.
I was wondered why AF has such a big lounge here, it is I would say as big as the old LH Senator lounge at gate A26. At that time of the day, there depart a KL, AF and a AZ flight, and maybe 15 passengers around only.
The food here was quite good, espacially the croissants, if a lounge have good croissants, I don't need anything else. The stock of drinks very good as well because they had 0,2 liter glass bottles, which I like a lot.

My meal today

After lounge and enjoying the free Wifi, and left the lounge went to my gate. I just spotted the Ethiopian Dreamliner in the distance, well here it is, the shot isn't the best:

My gate D22 this morning

Strange system here, about 15 mins before boarding they call the pax to the gate and scan their BPs, and than you can sit down in the real holding area, I think in DXB they have the same system.

15 minutes later, exactely on time, they announced boarding and I went down to the bus which will take us to the plane.

THE FLIGHT FRA-AMS KL 1764

Flight: KLM Royal Dutch Airlines KL 1764
Aircraft: Emrbraer E190
Registration: PH-EZA
Duration: 62 minutes
Seat/Class: 26F/Economy Class
Load: ~ 70%

At the door I was greeted by a male dutch FA. He was businessfriendly in the end, not really warm.

First impressions of the cabin were good, nice dark leather seats, big windows, good legroom.

After boarding was completed, the standard security demo was done, and exactely on time we made our way for runway 25 Center and soon took off.

What I liked a lot at KL crew, the pilots did 2 announcements including very detailed flight information like routing, duration etc.

http://imageshack.us/a/img521/5415/dsc3008kopie.jpg

Soon, after a in my mind very short descending period we toutched down, sorry I don't which runway it was. After 5 mins of taxing we reached our gate at the B-pier and had to walk via stairss up to the terminal.

Hundrets of Fokkers and E-jets around

First impressions of AMS were quite good, it is a very bright and well signed, but it was very crowded here when I arrived, I think most of the people didn't have AMS as their final destination, like me today. During boarding in FRA I spotted several people with BPs for long haul flights like JFK and other north american destinations also on Delta.

My first destination today was the KLM Crown Lounge, which is situated at the beginning of all the piers, very central and easy to find, next to it is the Menzies lounge which is used by all non-Skyteam or non-KLM-partner airlines.

And here is my destination, the KLM Crown lounge

The lounge has a very large desk at the entrace with about 3 KLM people to check BPs. I handed over mine and was welcomed by name, I've been very surprised here.
I have to say I am very impressed by the design of the lounge, it is very stylish comfy and useful, BUT the drink selection is absolutely nothing in my view, the machine for the soft drinks didn't work well at all, most of the times, I got only sparkling water insted of Coke, Tonic or something. What I also disliked was the lack of Baileys, because I like it a lot, and it should be the standard in a lounge.
Now the food: Today chicken wings were on offer, quite good if you ask me, but that was the only meal they had for lunch. Also, the sweet crackers were quite good .
But in general, the food and drink selection was just OK, not more, but the interieur here is very good in my mind.

Here the impressions:

By the way, as next to always, one section of the lounge was closed.

After an hour or so in the lounge, I went outside for a closer look around in the terminal. I also had another lunch by Burger King, because I wasn't really filled after the lounge visit.

My other lunch !

After eating, I made my way for the outside platform to have a look at the ramp too:
I think that is a very good idea of AMS because you can relax here and spott the planes.

I stayed here for 2 hours and watched the planes and listened music, very good feature that platform even better than a lounge I think.

I now had about 2 hours left until boarding for my LUX flight would start. I went back for the lounge for some time, looked around the shops. I went for my gate about 30 mins early to observe the operations on the ''Fokker-Farm'' , which is very interesting by the way.

Again

Finally, it was time for my flight to board:

THE FLIGHT KL 1745

FLIGHT: KLM ROYAL DUTCH AIRLINES KL1745
AIRCRAFT: FOKKER 70
REGISTRATION: PH-KZP
DURATION: 60 minutes incl. go-around
SEAT/CLASS: 17F/Economy Class
LOAD: ~70%

Boarding began on time here again, and I amde my way down the for the bus, which should drive us to our Fokker. I think there were at least 12 F70s that time. Here it is:

PH-KZP today

It just started to rain, so I quickly stepped upstairs into my Fokker.
First impressions of the cabin were OK. It looks quite old, aslo the seats aren't really new I think. Also the size of the seats, there is a big difference between the Fokker and the E-jet, the seats of the latter one are much wider, also the legroom in the E-jet is better, but for a 50 mins ride it will be OK.

The blue fabric seats

By the way, I had the whole last row for myself today, but you only have half a window here, because the engine is right here.

The cabin

Again

Quite tight

Welcome speech here on that flight again very detailed with routing duration etc. And again we made our way for the runway on time.
I have to say that the F70 is very loud inside espacially in the last row where the engine is just 50 cm away.

Take off!

As you can see, the view out of the window is rather limited, but you can still see something. Also it felt very private in the last row as the only passenger.

Cabin inflight

Shortly after take off the service began. Again OK for that route, but I had not a choise about the drink, they just distibured orange juice and the, this time, salty snack.
Well, here it is:

The snack

After about 35 mins into the flight, the pilots already started the descend and fasten seatbelt sign was switched on.

Cabin

After 45 mins we already were about to land in LUX, but then: My first go-around! That really is a very powerful event, even on a Fokker, I think much more powerful than the take off. In the cabin, the people begun chatting loudly about what is going on. One minute later, the captain came on the speaker, you could understand it clearly. He explained very calm that we just did a ''so called go-around'' and that it is something very normal, and we don't have to worry about that. He said the reason was a Cargolux 747 which was still on the runway for taking off. OK, I had my first go-around much earlier than expected. I now was on about 85 flights in my life, and I don't think that a go-around happens ervey 80th flight.

After another 10 mins we finally landed at LUX airport, the 7th landing for me on that airport, the last one over 1 year ago.

Touching down

Hey LX-LGF I flew on you 2 months ago from TXL to SCN, and also hello to LX-LGE, I flew on her from FCO to LUX 10 months ago

My Fokker

Afier a short taxiing of maybge 3 mins we arrived our remote stand, I diembarked as the last one.
By the way: Easyjet now flies to LUX to I think LGW and MXP for very low prices. On the LUX-LON route are flying 4 carriers with up to 13 frequencies a day, the means the prices are pushed down, so you get cityjet one way from LUX to LCY for 23€ (normal price). Also Luxair is cheap here with 99€ return fares to LCY.

And ''home'' again

I walked outside where my brother already waited, after another hour I finally was at home again.

The main building

CONLUSION

KLM FRA-AMS: comfy flight, FAs not that friendly but still OK
AMS transit: KLM lounge: nice interieur, bad offerinf, also half of the lounge was closed
AMS airport: very nice one! Also the idea of an airside outside terrace is great!
KLM AMS-LUX: agian nice flight on the Fokker, first go-around, so Great flight!

Next to come: summer trip to the middle east together with my brother (luxair747sp) including Gulfair, Qatar Airways, United Airlines, SWISS, Turkish Airlines and Aegean.

I hope you enjoyed that report!

Maybe there are some mistakes in the report, I am sorry, but my english is not the best at all!

Warm regards

Elias

Hi Elias,

nice to read about your KLM experience. I personally don't like the seats on the KLM E90s, too sticky and they look 'well used' already so quickly. I prefer fabric seats much more, like the ones on the F70 or 737's.

So, a first trip having a 'free' Gold status, and asking for an upgrade, how dare you!   The lounge in FRA looks nice indeed, and in AMS, it's nice too. Sorry about your feeling about not enough food, but there must've been soup with bread? KLM have 2 choices of soup available in the lounges on all my visits in lunch or evening time. I'll check on Thursday for my next flight.
Regarding Baileys, it's not so standard. You won't find it in SAS lounges either, and do LH Business lounges have it? Not, if I remember well. Wines and beer, whiskey, gin... that's what is most important and suits most travellers.

True about KLM's greeting by name, they always do it to me as well and they're mostly very attentive and customer-minded. A shame that there are no apron views from the 'Schengen' lounge.

Congrats with the go-around, always a special feeling. I got my first after about 400 flights. But I had a rejected take-off at real high speed, which was much more exciting honestly!

Regards
Eric

OK, I normally prefer fabric ones as well, but in the E-jets there is just so much legroom, so I like it!

Well, I had a rather long chat with her about the ''tripreporters-hobby'' I thought that would be something like bonus or so   I think with a load of 95%, she would have upgreded me. I normally not ask for upgrades, but after a nice chat with a check-in agent, who knows!

absolutely!

Yes there was some soup, but it already was cold and didn't look very inviting.

Yes, LH lounges have it, both Business and Senator lounges. And yes, wines beer etc. is available. For me it just was the first lounge visit without Baileys, so I was wondered.

Great report! I love the wide angel photos, and great to see KLM still operating the F70 in full force on short haul flights.

Hi Emek96,

Thanks for your trip report
It gives a nice view of KLM's european offerings, since it's been a while when I flew them.
The lounge in AMS looks nice, I really like the interior and those red seats as well there.
Just a little pity that beverages were a bit of a let down , especially for a lounge in their hub.
The F70 is really a nice looking aircraft, and especially nice that you got a go-around! I had one once
between Amsterdam and Mineapollis which was a great experience!

Yes, absolutely, I think in the US it is a very rare type, but in EU we still have it quite often (KLM about 15-20 Fokkers,Austrian also)

Yes the lounge and its design is very nice, but as mentioned, I think the choise of food isn't that good as in e.g. LH-lounges (in my mind, it is always a matter of taste)

Yes, F70 is for sure an intersting type, and the go-around is interesting as well, oh I think on a haevy bird (between AMS and Mineapollis) it is even more exciting!

Hi Elias!

Nice report on your 2 short hops with KLM Cityhopper! Congrats on logging a new type and your first go-around. KLMs service here looks like the usual you can find on these short hops, which is sufficient for me

I have to say here in FRA I definetely prefer T1, well its owercrowded everytime, but much more interesting.

Indeed, FRA T2 airside is sooo boring

Quoting Emek96 (Thread starter):
What I also disliked was the lack of Baileys, because I like it a lot, and it should be the standard in a lounge.

So it should be standard in a lounge because you like it?
Quoting Emek96 (Thread starter):
What a beauty !

Indeed!

Thanks for sharing

cheers,

Hi Elias,

nice report with good pictures - a bit lounge heavy for my taste, but well, tastes are different.

Quoting Emek96 (Thread starter):

Check-in agents like those are one reason why I prefer kiosks.

Quoting Emek96 (Thread starter):
Next to come: summer trip to the middle east together with my brother (luxair747sp) including Gulfair, Qatar Airways, United Airlines, SWISS, Turkish Airlines and Aegean.

That's an interesting mix!

Yes I definetely prefer the leather ones.

Quoting adamspotter (Reply 7):
Hi Elias!

Nice report on your 2 short hops with KLM Cityhopper! Congrats on logging a new type and your first go-around. KLMs service here looks like the usual you can find on these short hops, which is sufficient for me

Hey Brendan ! thanks, yes service is OK, on such routes there wouldn't be the time to ''do'' more, so OK.

Quoting adamspotter (Reply 7):
I've actually seen it get quite packed myself..

Oh really ? Which part was it ? Well, I can only say sth about my experience, it was the only one for me travelling from T2.

Quoting adamspotter (Reply 7):
So it should be standard in a lounge because you like it?

Yes right   No, I just was wondered because it was the first lounge in which I was without Baileys.

Hey Planehunter! Thanks !

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 8):

Yes, that might be I think in the next report I will ignore the lounges a bit because the flights will be more exotic.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 8):
Check-in agents like those are one reason why I prefer kiosks.

Normally, I use as well the kiosks, espacially when I have a strange routing, but that time I just wanted to know what type of Boardingpasses they give, you know I am a little bit a boardingpass-collector, so I want to have all different types of BPs.

Thanks for your comments!

Elias

Hi Elias

Great report about KLC! Reminds me of my many BRU-AMS hops. Good product for such a short hop
I like the AMS airport aswell, can't wait till I'm there in september.
Interesting to see PH-KZP, logged her in April 2005 between BRU and AMS

Yes service is good compared to many others, but I still prefer the shorthaul service of Lufthansa.

Great report Elias,

It's indeed great to see KLM still operating and maintaining their F70's.
Did they cease their F100 service?

Max

Hello Elias,

Nice report and good to see you logging the more interesting KL ‘species’. I’m a true sucker for the Embraer: nice cabin, not too big and most important: large windows! Also the F70 ranks high on my list but I’ve only had 1 flight on those last year from AMS to BRU in the exit row.

Congrats on the Gold and I hope you are able to make good use of it!

Yes you are right, compared to the F70, the E190 is much more comfortable.

Hey, E.,

sure a good read about you´re lot´s of first experiences.
Count me in with FRA T2 and the AF lounge, been there for a couple of times.
And also my impression with KL´s Crown Place, the last two times also the Annex part was open for biz.

Hi there Elias, nice report.

Must admit I'm in agreement with the fact that T2 at FRA is pretty boring. Flew out of there last year and as you mention, apart from the one duty free shop there isn't that much!

AMS on the other hand is pretty good - and nice to have a spotter friendly airport still around too. I didn't know they had that outside terrace though? Although when I was there, it was too wet to go outside anyway!

I thought the F70 was actually pretty good when I went on one last year. Admittedly I've not been on a KLM E-Jet, but I found the F70 more comfortable than any of the others I've been on with those big blue seats!

Right, I will fly from the non-schengen area in summer, so maybe there is more to see.

Yes it is just on the other side of the KLM lounge maybe 50 mtrs.

Concerning the Fokker, they will sadly replace them by other E-jets soon , too bad...

Nire report Elias!

Quoting Emek96 (Thread starter):
T2 D-Schengen airside is very boring, the only thing here is a duty free shop, no other shops or restaurants at all. Also, you cannot observe the operations on the apron well because the holding areas are seperate rooms between airside and outside, not good here. I have to say here in FRA I definetely prefer T1, well its owercrowded everytime, but much more interesting.

Yup, very boring in T2. I was here recently for a VN flight - it's like a completely different airport compared to T1.

Quoting Emek96 (Thread starter):
Quite funny, between T2 and T1 C there only is a light glasswall, you can directely look at gate C16, but if you want to connect from T2 to T1 you have to go out, take the skyline to T1 and you have to re-check-in, but well that are the rules..

It's quite strange in FRA! Complete opposite to SIN, where you can walk bewtween terminals without realising

Quoting Emek96 (Thread starter):
I have to say I am very impressed by the design of the lounge, it is very stylish comfy and useful, BUT the drink selection is absolutely nothing in my view

I agree - very poor F&B choices I think, especially compared to BA's in LHR.

Yes, FRA still is a very complicate airport, even if you connect from a non-schengen flight to another non-schengen flight from B to Z or to C, you have to leave the secured area and you have pass two passport controls.
