LOT, Warsaw and Copenhagen

Hi everyone and thanks for reading my report! Comments and questions are always appreciated.

OK, you know how this goes—it was spring break, and I just had to go somewhere. Where could I go... Texas? Cancun? Other Spring Break destinations? Hell no. Why ever would I do that... I'm not interested in getting drunk. I decided, along with M, to go somewhere way more interesting.

Looking at one-way transatlantic flights to Northern Europe, three airlines stood out. These were LOT, Air Berlin and Icelandair.

Well, soon it was decided what we'd do. Fly with LOT from Chicago to Copenhagen via Warsaw. Also, we'd be returning with Icelandair, Keflavik to Boston. What to do in the middle? Good question. Well, after conferring, we decided to try Atlantic Airways. BOS-ORD would be done directly on JetBlue's E-190, a new aircraft type for me.

Here's the full trip summary:

So, why these airlines? And why these destinations? Well, as I said before, price was a big factor. However, to get to the Faroes there's not much choice... Air Iceland is again the only airline flying on our required route to Akureyri. JetBlue offered me a nice new aircraft for the log... And LOT... was supposed to be a 787. Nevertheless, Poland is a new country for me. Icelandair was supposed to be a 753... and since I found out at the gate it wouldn't be one... I held a grudge against them for a couple of hours.

Anyway, that's about it for the introduction.

LOT's website didn't pose problems during booking, and for ~700$/person, the flights were booked. We were able to easily choose seats online on LOT's website... Of course, we had to change this when the 787 was officially downgraded to a 767. No problems whatsoever, yet again. Good job, LOT.

Well, once I was done with my final exams for the quarter, it was time to prepare for the long flight to Europe. Bags were packed, and, the next day, off we were to O'Hare. Since the University of Chicago Student Government can arrange airport buses for its students as well as I can speak Russian (I can say a few words), we finally decided to take a taxi to Jackson-Blue Line stop in downtown Chicago. The taxi driver was suspended for 4 hours because he took us instead of the guys who'd called him. He never asked us if we were who he was supposed to pick up. Then, we took the Blue Line to ORD, luckily with time to spare.

We then took the landside automated train to T5 and went to LOT's check-in desks. Not long after, we were helped by a nice check-in agent. Our bags were tagged to CPH and we were on our way to security control... which took a while. Once airside, I decided to explore T5 in detail, which I had never done. Not very interesting... Almost nothing there (although it seems that's finally changing). A few nice aircraft but nothing that interesting. Etihad and BA 777s...

Well, afterwards, it was time to go to our gate and wait for the boarding process of this aging and supposed-to-be-retired 767.

On board, I didn't really know what to expect. LOT doesn't have a great reputation, though I hadn't heard many horror stories either. While maintaining an Eastern-European flair, I found that the service was generally good.

The seats were alright, comfortable enough, though not particularly so.

The blanket offered was one of rather good quality for airline standards. Definitely softer and plushier than, say, Delta's.

Legroom wasn't all that great. For me it was enough... but, remember, I'm quite short.

Soon, it was time to leave for Warszawa. The 767 proceeded to active and, without the wait usually associated with evening departures out of O'Hare, took off.

They did manage to represent the right aircraft type on their safety cards. Well done, LOT.

The headphones, on the other hand, appear to be from a different era. Perhaps, from a different planet entirely...

Over Michigan, or possibly even Canada, the Sun decided to set on us, giving some rather nice views outside...

The meal, finally came. M ordered a special meal, so it came out first. It ended up being some sort of fish... and also some sort of chicken (the latter was quite tasty, btw).

My meal showed up as well, sometime later... You know what, it was good by airline standards. Not something for your mouth to water, but certainly eatable, unlike Delta's “food” on transatlantic sectors...

Also, the food boxes themselves were quite interesting. I like when airlines try to reduce the blandness from in-flight meals, even if only on the boxes.

Since this flight was a night flight, I proceeded to sleep for a while. Of course, it's not like I had that many options. IFE was restricted to the monitor in the front of the cabin. No PTVs on this old bird, of course.

Breakfast was decent as well, although completely on the sweet side, which some may find unappealing... Also, some tea and some blackcurrant juice on offer.

The cabin, while aging, and reminiscent of flights circa 2000 due to the seats' design, was kept reasonably tidy. This is in keeping with how Warsaw looks—quite tidy itself—no surprise, in retrospect.

Finally, we were on approach to WAW, slowly descending to the frosty (and very cold) Polish countryside. Really cold. Of course, that's to be expected if you're crazy enough to go to Poland in winter.

Upon disembarkation, it's worthwhile to ponder whether I found LOT to be a good airline. Overall, I'd say yes. I haven't had to deal with any serious problems, but I find that everything was done well on LOT, on ground and in-flight. The F/A in charge of our sector was rather cold and I don't think I've heard her speak any English throughout the flight aside from asking what meal I'd like. That said, I don't really mind that, as long as everything is done well. Overall, my experience on LOT, at least so far, has been good.

What is my first impression of WAW?

Labyrinthine. Upon exiting our 767 we had to undergo many switchbacks and altitude changes to arrive at the arrivals level in Warszawa. Basically, there were many ramps we had to climb in order to reach this level, all in a rather warehouse feel... Unfortunately I didn't snap any pictures.

That said, the terminal is brand new, and looks quite nice on the inside, even if it's (very) spartan. Passport control was quick. However, the queue for security heading to Schengen-flights here was... huge. I wouldn't want to wait in that. Since we didn't have to use it, I don't know how long it would take to go through. But it doesn't look good. We exited the arrivals level and, through the baggage claim area, we exited land-side. After grabbing a drink (and potentially some snacks to eat), we proceeded to the 175 bus, towards the Old Town. I believe you have to obtain the ticket before entering the bus, so that's what we did, not before M withdrew some zlotych from the ATM. Though I think you could pay with a card (don't quote me on that).

After 20-30 minutes, we reached central Warsaw (the airport here is decently close to the center). We proceeded to start walking through the bitter weather...

As I've mentioned before, Warsaw is a rather tidy city, at least in the central areas that I've seen.

Then, we proceeded further North, towards the Old Town Square. Nothing too brilliant to see around here... Of course, we didn't hang around for long due to the cold. It's probably packed in summer, even though Warsaw isn't a very traditionally touristic city.

We wanted to visit the castle, but some concert/other event prevented us to explore this castle in detail. The fact that we had our backpacks without didn't help the cause, as (especially) M didn't particularly want to leave her stuff at the coatroom (which wasn't very secure). So we got a warm citrus tea and left... Not before we weren't sure why we weren't allowed to exit the building (something to do with no drinks on the stairs? over the carpets?) due to the guard's lack of foreign knowledge skills.

After the Old Town, it was the turn of the New Town. Upon entering this area, we heard a guide talking in English... He was recalling how some previous tourist asked him about Warsaw, and whether “they're friendly there” if spoken to in English. The answer was along the lines of... “of course they're not friendly. They're not friendly to anyone”. Hah, some good old Eastern European mentality right there.

After wandering around the New Town, with almost nothing around save for people exiting churches with buckets (it's pronounced bouquets) of flowers in their hands, we proceeded towards the Supreme Court building and the National Library. It was getting cold... some of us were getting hungry, others thirsty... We headed back to Krakowskie Przedmiescie and sat down in a little tea shop (Demmers Teehaus) for about an hour. We waited for a while before ordering our teas. The waitress was nice yet shy when speaking in English... though she spoke it quite well. Then, upon exiting this establishment and walking south, we noticed that some streets were closed to traffic and no buses were running. Looking back, we noticed a street demonstration. We quickened up the pace and found a traditional Polish restaurant, Przy Trakcie, to eat in, reasonably modern-looking and rather nicely decorated, again with a bit of Eastern European flair. While we were waiting on our food, the people marching in the demonstration walked by... Catholics against abortion, etc. Well, at least it wasn't something very likely to get violent. That said... This isn't something I like to see. Though, of course, they have every right to march.

My meal was good... some traditional dish, composed of pork with potatoes and cabbage. M enjoyed her fish (salmon?) dish as well. I was feeling quite tired and out of it by this point, but the meal set everything straight.

We walked down Nowy Swiat to the famous palm tree with its own website, and waited for the 175 bus back to WAW. Not long thereafter, we reached Chopin airport.

I like how clean central Warsaw was:


Overall, WAW was reasonably nice as a city, and very clean, though the weather was not the best. That said, I haven't particularly liked the people I've interacted with during this time. English was not spoken too widely, which in itself is not a bad thing... however, the tourist attractions (say, the castle) and the airport are two places where I'd expect better foreign language skills than exhibited...

Back to WAW:


At WAW, we proceeded to security, which was a rather daunting process. The people there couldn't or didn't want to speak much English... The instructions therefore weren't very clear. I had to remove my cell phone from my bag (first time this ever happened that I recall). M tells me she had to turn on her iPad... What is this, 2004? Haven't had to turn on an electronic device for ages now... She tells me the security guard wasn't sure that the iPad was, though this comment may have been in jest.

Later, FlyingFinn76 told me that, in fact, the security people in Polish airports are army people. Ah, that explains everything. From the lack of customer service to the imperfect knowledge of English... Anyway, along with CDG, I rank WAW among the worst airport security I've had to deal with... Worse than the TSA in my experience. Chisinau security was friendly in comparison, even though you might expect otherwise...

WAW airport is brand new, due to the Euro2012 championships being held in Poland and Ukraine, but has a rather sterile feeling. I hear the same about KBP, though I have no personal experience on that front. There is free wi-fi for 30 minutes (I think) if you scan your boarding pass. The machines that give you the code don't tend to work that well, but in the end we managed to get two codes.

Soon enough, our machine, SP-LIF (hehe... too bad I don't like weed), arrived at the gate. Not much later, boarding was called.

Well, we were both excited to finally be on our way to Copenhagen. Our flight left and arrived on-time. No complaints there.

The legroom on the E-175 may have been too small for the tallest among us, but was fine for me.

Service on this 1-hour flight to Copenhagen would be a snack and a drink, on par with what you'd receive in the USA on Delta or Southwest. No comments, good or bad, regarding the crew. Overall, a pleasant sunset flight.

We landed in CPH on runway 04L and taxied to the A concourse. Soon, we were out of the aircraft and in CPH's rather nice terminal. After proceeding to get our bags from the baggage claim, we headed to the train station, buying a ticket each for the train to Copenhagen. If I remember correctly there was no ticket control whatsoever, which is maybe what you'd expect from a laid-back society like the Danish one. This is based on trust, so buy your ticket anyway. Don't ruin a good thing.

A rather nice foreshadowing occurred at this airport. I'll let you figure out what that was

After 14 minutes, we arrived at Copenhagen Central Station. After a few purchases at the 7/11, we proceeded to our hotel, the Scandic Webers, a few blocks away. A nicely decorated hotel, in the Scandinavian style, though the bathroom fixtures were of poor quality. The room was nice, however. Friendly staff.

Not wanting to waste the precious little time we had in Copenhagen, we decided to take an hour walk around town, on Strøget particularly... A couple of night pictures are below.

The next day, we decided to see the most interesting sights around Copenhagen, so we woke up early. After eating a hearty and delicious breakfast, we took our leave and proceeded north towards Strøget.

Our first destination in the city tour was Rundetårn, a former astronomic observatory, currently a nice place to see the city of Copenhagen (and some parts of Sweden) from above. We only gained access after a while since M's card didn't, at that time, have a chip. You see, the US is a bit backward in some situations... Even my Romanian card has had a chip since 2009 (my US one doesn't). Luckily, her bank now offers a chip-card.

After seeing the sights from Rundetaarn, we proceeded further north towards the Rosenborg Castle. We didn't go inside, as we had no special invitation from the Danish Royal family  However, the castle is located in the King's Gardens, which we explored for a bit—not too interesting in winter, however. Then, since it was in the way, we passed through the Botanical Garden. Another observatory was inside this Garden... You might have heard of Tycho Brahe... Denmark has a rather long history in astronomy. At first I thought his (Tycho's) statue was of Hamlet (which confused M, why would I say that?)...

Next step was the long walk North to the Little Mermaid statue... After passing through some military barracks (this would possibly be punished with some sort of death in the USA   ) we reached the statue, not after drinking a refreshing hot chocolate and tea, respectively. Near the Little Mermaid was a huge man dressed as some sort of animal. An American tourist spoke my thoughts exactly: “when the fuck is the damn raccoon getting out of the way?”

Well, eventually, it finished posing, and got out of the way. Some tourists online complain about how small the little Mermaid is. Dear lads and lasses, do you know what the statue is called? The LITTLE Mermaid   Perhaps, you'd like it Texas-sized, for your viewing convenience? It's supposed to represent longing for the sea. Besides, who wants a giant mermaid staring at them? 

While the statue is nice enough, there's always a crowd. I can't imagine how it is in summer...

Next stop, the Anglican Church, a rather beautiful building on the outside. It was closed, so we don't know how it is on the inside.

Then, the long journey back south, towards Amalienborg Palace. After seeing the rather weird pedestrian-car mix at Amalienborg, we headed one block west, to the Marmorkirken (Marble Church).

Next stop, some food. A small place on Bredgade which served soups and sandwiches. Good, as you'd expect the food to be in Copenhagen. We also checked-in for our next flights here, if memory serves. This was two steps from Nyhavn, the New Harbor, which we proceeded to walk to afterwards. A nice place with interesting little buildings. A nice place to waste some of your free time.

Then we proceeded towards Christiansborg Palace. Some building (not directly) on the way featured this rather strange tower...

We walked north on Laederstraede before reaching Stroget, and finding a small bistro on this main street. We probably paid a little bit more than we would've on other streets, but the food was good. I had the Steak and M some Sushi.

After a long day, it was time to head back to the hotel. The next day would see us in another interesting place...

Again, after some breakfast, we visited Vesterbro during an one hour walk before taking the Oresundstag back to Kastrup airport... for a nominal fee.

Overall, I really liked Copenhagen. Warsaw was nice enough as well.

LOT surpassed my expectations, and provided good service on their transatlantic route. Nothing much differentiates it from other airlines on short-haul. On-time in both cases. Decent and user-friendly website, if not the best design. Friendly ground staff in ORD. Baggage delivered to the claim... on time. Positive overall. Really can't complain. The F/A didn't speak much but that's OK. I also saw some antique metal or silver-painted box that you might use to cage a chicken during the flight, carried by one F/A. I don't know what that was about, really.

Anyway, sure, thumbs up for LOT. M has another flight booked on LOT, so she enjoyed this airline as well.

Hey! Nice report, glad you enjoyed LOT. I flew on their 787 in December and loved the experience. In the process of arranging WAW-YYZ with them on the Dreamliner for July now.

I can't be sure but we have similar containers onboard - bar boxes for containing a myriad of things from glassware to drinks etc. We also have a caged container to house lavatory supplies.

Another aircraft change, that's indeed bad. But FI operates just a single 753, so you never know until you see it parked at the gate.

My wife and I spent 1 week in Copenhagen back in September 2011 and loved it. Thank you for sharing! What a great city.

LOT looks alright, and not a bad way to cross the Atlantic.

Funnily enough the same thing happened to me in Fargo the other day. Good thing we figured out the mix-up early on and we picked up the people that had called him in the first place (who luckily enough were going to the same place I was so we shared the ride...).

So how did you find out that he got suspended?

Nice report with equally nice pics. I’m sorry to say that LOT is an airline that has no appeal to me. I’ve flown them once (or twice) on BRU-WAW-RIX and I found the service to be so-so and the old B735 on BRU-WAW nearly fell apart. Also your B763 is one old lady. While flying such an oldie can be ‘on the cool side’, for a longer flight I would definitely prefer a somewhat more contemporary cabin. The meals look good though!

I'll have to disagree with you on one front... I find older cabins and older aircraft in general more comfortable (at least in Economy). I'm not a big fan of slimline seats, or the cramming in of more seats per row than envisioned by aircraft manufacturer (787).

Nice that they offer blackcurrant juice and tea as a differentiating factor on the breakfast service.

Breakfast looks just like you'd get on a US carrier in Y which is okay but on the slim side.

Very funny with that old head seat! I had the same type on AA on their 763 about two years ago and I never knew that had something so old even on a 763! That's the type that was used in the 1980s and earlier on. I remember using those on TW''s L-1011s.. UA hasn't had anything that ancient in over 20 years. Even the old 762s had more modern headsets.

Warzaw looks nice and clean and Copenhagen looks nice but cold. Very brave of you to go there that time of year but you are used to Chicago so perhaps even warm for you there ?

Well, the 787 made the decision easier but it wasn't the only reason I chose LOT... So it's ok.

Indeed they like that sort of design. And I find quite nice as well. They do seem to like their blackcurrant juice--Alitalia has good juices, but LOT has this covered as well. I have to say, I was impressed by the catering.

The seats definitely seem pretty old... Anyway, I thought UA/CO's 762 are (were?) rather new, almost 10 years newer than this bird, isn't that so? Of course the seats would be newer. AA did seem to be stuck in the past for a while (but maybe that's not such a bad thing).

LOL. Warsaw was definitely colder than Copenhagen... Eh, Chicago is above freezing by that time of the year--but compared to Chicago winters, the temp. in CPH was mild.

Makes sense. As I said, I wouldn't expect English speakers in villages. Just at tourist attractions and the airport.

Sure, but this was late march, and it was much colder than 27F when I got there. Maybe it was 27F by the end of the day.

I understand LOT haven't planned to have them in service and did not refurbish them, so I wouldn't blame them. Had the chance to be on their 787 and found if pretty good.

WAW airport I found quite easy to navigate through, but never been non Schengen side. Comprared to the old cramped and small building it's great, although indeed a bit sterile. I do especially not like when airports use steel/iron benches, why not put a bit upholstery? Anyway not a too bad airport. Didn't had any issue with security to be honest and here in Europe it does happen quite regulary to me (although not often) that I need to turn on my netbook....

I flew a United 763 in 2003, though.

They were used on trans-cons like LAX/SFO-JFK, BOS-LAX, IAD-LAX, BOS-SFO. You wouldn't have seen the 762s in ORD...

The 762s were also used for international flights and I flew on a 762 IAD-BRU in May96. In the 19080s, they were also used on routes like ORD-LGB (!!) and DEN-LGB (!).
