Hello again dear a.netters!

Thank you for reading this trip report which will cover a very special trip for me to the Big Apple.

BACKGROUND :

In early april, I attended to a very important exam for my job which will change my life in a very great way. As a reward for all the efforts I've done to succeed it, I decided to treat my girlfriend and I with a week-long trip to New York City, a place I wanted to visit since a very long time. During the booking process, I wanted to stick with the Star Alliance and the cheapest and most convenient way to go to NYC was LYS-ZRH-EWR with LX. All the booking process was done swiftly through the Lufthansa' website. I also booked a room at the Novotel Hotel in downtown NYC, just few blocks away from Times Square and directly on Broadway. A very convenient place to stay despite it's not the best Novotel I've stayed in.

So, welcome to this quite long TR, I wish you'll enjoy reading it!

The morning of the departure day, we were very excited about the idea to be in New York few hours later. We made our way to La Part Dieu Station where the infamous Rhônexpress station is located...

After the 30-minutes trek to Lyon St-Exupéry airport, we entered the very nice train station of the airport
http://imageshack.us/a/img17/5066/avnt.jpg

The check-in process was done by an obviously newly trained staff because she wasn't aware of the US-bound passenger procedures nor the Miles & More Frequent Traveller luggage allowance. Anyway, she was very courteous and she managed to check-in us to our final destination. After passing through the (always) painfully security checkpoint, we waited for the boarding time in the Terminal 2.

Busy action in LYS. An U2 Airbus A319 is taking-off while an A5 Bombardier CRJ-200 is taxiing to its stand, another A5 Embraer 170 is taxiing to the runway and the LH Boeing 737-300 is being prepared for its flight back to FRA

The turn-around was done quite quickly and soon it was time to board Swiss!

As soon as we entered the terminal we walked toward the Skymetro station which will lead us to the Dock E. ZRH is very efficient and convenient place to tranfer and it took as less as 20 minutes from the plane-door to the Dock E! I was sooooo impressed by how quick the transfer was done!

We went upstairs to the Dock E Departure level and with only 2 US-bound flights departing, it felt rather deserted to say the least. Anyway, it looked very clean and easy to navigate in...Swiss style! The only disappointment could be the lack of food offer and duty-free shops...

After being glued to the window for a while, the F/A came into action for the lunch service. Today's offer was :
Salad
Beef stew with polenta and vegetables
Appenzeller cheese
Cake

http://imageshack.us/a/img203/9777/nnj4.jpg

It was quite tasty and the quantity of food fitted well my needs. Well done LX!

Now, as there wasn't much to see through the windows, I decided to explore the IFE and to watch Charlie & the chocolate factory. This is my flight onboard an IFE-equipped plane and I liked what was offered by LX. It only lacks of a multi-language subtitle function.

I also paid a visit to the lavatories which were kept clean by the F/A

Eventually, the plane taxied to the parking stand where we were among the first ones to step outside of the plane. I was a bit concerned about all the feedback from the US immigration process (painfully slow, awkward questionning and so on...). Well...not this time for me! In few minutes we were allowed to enter the US and all the process was done smoothly. I booked a shared van which we were in about 20 minutes after disembarking! Nice first time in the US. The journey from EWR to downtown New York City is very long but soon enough, we checked-in at the hotel for a well waited night.

After a long ride onboard the shared shuttle, we arrived in a rather empty terminal. The check-in process was done quickly as well as the TSA screening which wasn't worst than the security screening in France... By the way, we passed through the infamous "nude-o-scope" which I find very convenient. We entered the concourse where Star Alliance partners are located. The LH flight to MUC was boarding as well as the SK flight to CPH while SQ flight to SIN was waiting for it's next world longest flight.

We were greeted by a nice F/A and soon, we pushed-back on our way to LYS. The pilot must be (or have been) a fighter pilot because the take-off was rocket-like.

Well, this trip is now over. After a ride back to downtown Lyon with the Rhônexpress, back to the reality, I'll have to go back to work on the monday!

Conclusions :
LYS - As always, nice airport but it needs more customer-oriented staff
ZRH - Smooth transfer, very well designed airport
EWR - Pleasantly surprised by this airport. It only lacks of food option and duty free shops because there is almost nothing to do once airside
LX - Very great airline, good in-flight food and nice IFE. Their planes are very comfortable. I love flying with them!

Hello LYSflyer,

Quoting LYSflyer (Thread starter):
In early april, I attended to a very important exam for my job which will change my life in a very great way.

Congrats!

Quoting LYSflyer (Thread starter):
a week-long trip to New York City, a place I wanted to visit since a very long time. D

Great choice!!

Quoting LYSflyer (Thread starter):
So, welcome to this quite long TR, I wish you'll enjoy reading it!

I thoroughly did!

Quoting LYSflyer (Thread starter):
We were welcomed by the Maître de cabine in a very courteous way, the cabin was spotless clean

Love that title....sounds better in French than the english equivalent.

Quoting LYSflyer (Thread starter):

Something I hope to be able to photograph myself someday on board a Swiss jet!!

Quoting LYSflyer (Thread starter):

Isn't she gorgeous?

Nothing like an Airbus.....gorgeous indeed.

Quoting LYSflyer (Thread starter):
This flight is operated by Edelweiss crew due to the shortage of LX crews. We felt very welcome aboard this flight and they managed to make us comfortable throughout the flight.

Why is there a shortage of Swiss crews?

Quoting LYSflyer (Thread starter):
Newark skyline insight

You might have seen the Manhattan skyline if you seated on the port side.

Quoting LYSflyer (Reply 3):

I regret not visiting this place when I went to New York...after all X-men and The Avengers where shot there lol

Quoting LYSflyer (Reply 4):

Another gorgeous bird....sad she will be ending these flights soon.

Quoting LYSflyer (Reply 4):
This time, the flight was operated by Swiss crew and they looked really tired and not interested about greeting passengers. I already miss Edelweiss crew!

Wow, quite strange to hear this about Swiss crews. Are they tired and overworked due to the shortages you mentioned above?

Quoting LYSflyer (Reply 4):

Great capture....always nice to see shots of take off and landing at night.

I don't know, that's something I read on the internet before the flight.

Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 7):
You might have seen the Manhattan skyline if you seated on the port side.

I agree but I prefer not facing the sun when onboard an airplane. Port side was facing the side during almost all the duration of the flight...I enjoyed views over Manhattan on the flight back to Europe
Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 7):

Yes, it's such a famous place and it's a magnificent railway station!

I agree...that's so sad... I must book an SQ flight!

Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 7):

Well, it happens but it was disturbing that LX crew were giving inferior product than the WK ones...

Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 7):

A wonderful last sight of New York City! I can't wait to go back to the USA or Canada...

I find the dinner on SWISS from the USA is subpar disgusting. A little better than UNITED because of the cheese.

A few years ago even from Switzerland it was awful but they made an effort and they were improved.

You know New York better than I do. And I live here.

I remember Lyon Bron in the early 1960s. They only had a few international flights. To North Africa (the Breguet) and an AF Viscount to London and Milan.

In the winter there so many delays due to fog I used to take the train to London.

How is it possible? A meal without cheese?! Shame on you UA!!!! (ahah! yes, I'm a french who like cheese!)

Lyon has changed dramatically, it's such a wonderful place to live now. Bron airport is still active but only for GA or military traffic. I was impressed to see a bunch of Bundesheer CH-53 sitting on the ramp when I was driving on the highway...

LYS still experience some foggy days but I guess the weather delays aren't common anymore.

Really? I didn't know that there is a tram system in Israel. These trams are french-made in the city of La Rochelle by Alstom. Lyon has 4 tramway lines along with the Rhônexpress (independently operated). Public transportation system is really well managed but I don't often use it as I prefer using Vélov', a self-service bicycle system...it's (almost) free of charge and good for health!

I think my pictures aren't blurry because the main subject is far away from the plane (so it doesn't "move" much), the lights inside of the plane were shaded. BTW, I took pictures during the T/O roll...well, they are SOOOO blurry!

Quoting EL-AL (Reply 13):
that! can ruin a flight for me.

Same for me! Will F/A ever understand crazy enthusiasts like us? I was once told not to take photos by a RO F/A...I was soooo sad...

Quoting idlewildchild (Reply 14):
Wonderful report and your English is Great!

Thank you very much

Quoting idlewildchild (Reply 14):
Please come back to my home town anytime.

Thank you! NYC is a really great city! I look forward to visit other towns in the US such as Washington DC (I must visit each capital city of a country I visit), Chicago, San Francisco...

Quoting idlewildchild (Reply 14):
Im glad you seemed to have had a good time with good weather and great flights!

My time in NYC wasn't good...it was PERFECT! The weather was really sunny but not to warm, it rained only during the last day which didn't bothered us as it was our shopping day. And the flights were amazing! My last longhaul flight was back in the early 2000 when my mother used to live in the french caribbean...

Quoting b777erj145 (Reply 15):
Nice/Good report.

Thank you!

Quoting b777erj145 (Reply 15):
I am impressed. I will definitely try them if they offer good connections

LX offers a very good (both longhaul and shorthaul) product and their hub in ZRH is really good. As for the connections, it depends on where you're travelling to. In France, LX only serves CDG, LYS and NCE from ZRH.

Merci, bonne revue! I've always wanted to read a good report on LX longhaul, all the photos looks great.

Quoting LYSflyer (Thread starter):

Well...so disappointing! It was bland, tasteless...I even couldn't finish the main dish.

Wow, that is very disappointing. I have to say, even though the outbound meal looked OK, I expected more of the meal service on LX, did you have a choice of meals at all?

It was just right along with the pre-arrival snack

Quoting flyguy89 (Reply 17):

Unfortunately, no choice was given...

Thanks for the info that "Lyon has changed."

I will have to go one day. I don't think they had a tram 50 years ago. It was a pretty depressing city in those days. But the restaurants were great and so was the countryside.

The station seems new.

Yes, Lyon is now a vibrant and one of the most pleasant french city.

Quoting lychemsa (Reply 19):

Sure, Lyon must be on the top of "to-visit" cities for everyone who goes to France!

Quoting lychemsa (Reply 19):

I think so too

Quoting lychemsa (Reply 19):

They still are!

Quoting lychemsa (Reply 19):

Lyon Part Dieu station was built in the 70s or 80s, it's one of the busiest train station in France and operates like a HST hub with high speed trains heading to/from Toulouse, Nice, Marseille, Perpignan, Montpellier, Strasbourg, Nantes, Lille, Paris, Frankfurt, Geneva mainly...
There is a project to build an underground station to double its capacity...

You mean that there was no choice or did they run out ?
I can not believe that swiss has only one option.
As i'm allergic for cheese i would not be very happy with this situation. Yes there are people in the world who (can)not eat cheese.
About closing the window blind i can understand that for a night flight this should not be a big problem but i hate it when they leave them open during the day specially when the sun is shining straight into my face.
Therefore I can understand that they use a standard approach to avoid this kind of problems.

If I remember well, there was only ONE choice but LX offers special meals for the ones who have special needs...

Quoting thaiflyer (Reply 21):

The main dish was 100% cheese-free. There was only a slice of packed cheese on the tray. I assume you're allergic to milk (or something like that), I know someone like you and I totally understand your situation.

Quoting thaiflyer (Reply 21):

Of course, it's annoying (that's why I try not-to-choose sun-facing windows and you can still ask the one who is seated in the window seat to lower the window blind. If asked politely, this should not be a problem (at least for me).
As for the morning light, I prefer to be waken-up smoothly by the sunrise than flying with blinded windows and suddenly, opening them and being blinded myself by too much light invading the cabin! That's my personnal taste...

Hi LYSflyer,

nice report with good pictures. I haven't tried Swiss' long-haul Y Class product yet, but it looks fine. Bad to hear about the quality differences between the meals.

I cannot wait to fly LX again, will take an A330 to Miami later this year.

Quoting LYSflyer (Thread starter):
Airborne after a powerful take-off, I'm used to smaller planes and the 333 is definitely more powerful than regional jets and the 320/737s...

It depends...narrowbody takeoffs can be very lame.

I agree, my point was that I could feel all the power needed to make such an heavy plane airborne!
