Conclusion

Kameraden,

Despite the delay, I was very happy to be aboard of KLM intercontinental flight again after a hiatus of nearly 23 years.

Truly journey of inspiration it was being my first trans-Atlantic flight ever. So wonderful as well to share it with my greatest travel companion Herman.

Apart from the luxury and attention to detail from the beginning to the end, it was the personal care to make our KL trip fly by. So, allow me to thank:

Julie and Riana for taking good care of us;
Mrs. De Jong for her supervisory;
Fleur for her assistance at AMS.

I sincerely hope that Brendan will accept the dedication of World Business Class experience to Toronto.

Last but not least, hartelijk dank to all of you! Thank you so much for reading!

Warme groet,

Suryo and Julie. Courtesy of Riana

Great trip report! Although I mostly am on DL when I fly to AMS, I do use the Crown lounge, which has much better food options than the munchies offered by Sky Clubs at ATL/JFK and the like. One question though, is there a standalone SkyTeam lounge at AMS?

A good trip report with some fine quality photos. I like the little added snippets of information that add background to where you are passing over.

Quoting akhmad (Thread starter):
The Rijksmuseum is a unique joint initiative of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and AMS?

This is an excellent idea and a welcome break from the usual obsession with "duty free" stores that have turned airports into shopping centres.

Quoting akhmad (Thread starter):
De vertrektijd van uw vlucht...is gewijgzigd

That's always alarming but good that they let you know. The photo of the unattended service desk is funny given the recommendation "kunt u contact opnemen met ons grondpersoneel." However it is impressive that the Captain gave a detailed explanation for the delay rather than the usual "operational reasons."

The cabin service seems of a high standard and the meals look appetising. The cheese portion seems a bit small but for the flight duration I suppose one would want too much. Leave a little space for the later meal service, maybe.

Quoting akhmad (Thread starter):
‘Guys, did you say earlier that we were travelling beyond Toronto?’

I look forward to learning whether you made your connection or had to rebook on a later flight. Can't wait for episode two!

Hi Suryo,

great report as usual! Good to hear from you - where have you been? Congratulations on your first transatlantic flight!

The presentation is quite bad - your meal looked better. The catering was a big letdown on my flight to MEX.

Nothing special IMO, same offerings as on my flight in March.

Hola Suryo!

Great read to start the week.

As usual a great Trip Report from yours on this North Atlantic route.

Being delayed at AMS is not a great deal if you can relax on the Crown lounge, I have visited a couple of times and it was a great experience, although food was less than one can expect at some other lounges, there were not hot offerings when I was there, but it was OK for the time of the day, late morning, as long as wine and champgane are available I have not many more requests, cold cuts and crackers make a great company.

The seats on that plane do not look really nice to me, they look robotic, but they are comfortable to sit on and relax during the trip, on night trips they are a different story but that is the case in many other airlines as well, together with my inability to sleep on planes they make a great combination, at least IFE keeps a good company.

The food on KLM tends to be very nice and they seem to keep up with that.

Looking forward to reading about your (mis-)connection at YYZ and the rest of the trip.

Salut!

Roger

Hi Suryo!

Thanks for another amazing report with amazing pictures !

Quoting akhmad (Reply 1):

Very nice ! I have visited there myself a few times.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 3):
’Negative! Further delayed to 19.45!’

Very bad! The explanation of changing a tire sounds a bit strange because it usually doesn't take much more than 30 minutes to to a tire change on an aircraft, at least that's my experience. For KLM at their home base, it should not take two hours. Perhaps they had to wait for an aircraft or they had a routing change of the original aircraft.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 4):

’What do you think of the comfort bag? KL inaugurated it on March 25, 2011 in collaboration with the Dutch design duo Viktor & Rolf!’

Looks nice the design. Will probably come to good use for something else. The content doesn't look so great.....

Quoting akhmad (Reply 5):

I love that song! I listened to that a lot during my recent trip to Dubai.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 5):
Pepper and salt container

Very nice design! The plates and sliver ware were very nicely designed too!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 5):
Appetizer and main course menu

Very disappointing menu for business class and the presentation wasn't very good either.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 7):
Light meal menu

Not to my taste either....

Quoting akhmad (Reply 7):
Numbers 38 and 46

Very nice with these houses as gifts ! Really unique for KLM.

Was the seat a horizontal lie flat seat ? It looks like it may be an angled seat which is very old and bad for business class these days.

I'm glad you had a nice flight on KLM and that you finally had your first Transatlantic crossing. I did my first one on a SK 747 in June 1982.....

Very much looking forward to your next part in this series!

Hi Suryo,

Thanks for this great report. It reminds me of how much I used to enjoy flying KLM in J having not done so since December 2002. It was especially interesting to see the design of the cutlery and crockery which is certainly unique in comparison to other airlines. Your pictures were of a very high standard. I hope to get the chance to fly KLM again soon.

Thanks again for this excellent report.

Great report, thanks for sharing this with us.
Too bad about the delay, glad you made up some time in the air.
KLs service looks good, while the hard product isn't top notch the soft product does make up for all.
I remember the KL crews as being for one of the best.

Thanks for the dedication to the DL 330! and congratuglations on your first TATL flight! Something that I did many times before.

Hey Suryo

Good to see this report come up, I remember you mentioned it in was of your previous reports. In any case, it's good you decided to give KLM another try. What kept you so long? 23 years is a long time!

As usual the food and service on KLM look really excellent. The only downside really is that seat. I know they're getting rid of the MD-11, the B747-400 is being refurbished and that the B777-300 has different seats like the ones on Air France. But what about the A 330 and the B777-200? Do you know if there are any plans to have the refurbished as well?

In any case, thanks for a great read and the lovely pictures. I'm looking forward to the next report.

Hi Suryo,

How nice to see this trip report up already...but I read it with a heavy heart!!...You know why.....However....

Quoting akhmad (Reply 1):
’Your first trans-Atlantic flight ever with the world’s oldest airline still operating under the same name!’

Congratulations to you on your first Trans-Atlantic flight ever....wow, I had no idea this trip was so special!!

Quoting akhmad (Thread starter):
‘By the way, we are traveling beyond Toronto as the west coast is the habitat of fur seals,’
‘We? Are you saying that I am going as well?’

Cute!!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 4):
“We apologize for the delay,” Captain Clasener followed his introduction on the microphone. “It was due to the wheel replacement which had to be conducted with utmost care.

That is kind of scary... Glad the wheel was fixed in place!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 7):

Quoting akhmad (Reply 7):
My choice of croquette roll. Note a packet of mustard underneath

I would have thought the choices would have been the other way around!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 7):
Despite the delay, I was very happy to be aboard of KLM intercontinental flight again after a hiatus of nearly 23 years.

23 years since an intercontinental flight with KLM, that is a long time. Looks like the other carriers have been getting your business!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 7):
Truly journey of inspiration it was being my first trans-Atlantic flight ever. So wonderful as well to share it with my greatest travel companion Herman.

There was no other way to do it....and of course with Ariel

Looking forward to the other installments!!!

Admirable report Suryo, as usual, very concise and informative!
I was waiting for this story with impatience, so thank you so much for writing it.
Your flag carrier for your first tatl seemed so obvious, well done   .

Excellent idea of suggesting this museum, most of us probably know that it does exist but myself i've never found the time to stop by    , Is it open 24/7?

Quoting akhmad (Reply 1):
’Well…’
‘Or is it easier to find the right check-in desk?’

Yup definetely  .

Quoting akhmad (Reply 2):

Clearly, that's your unique signature, impressive   .

Thanks you so much for sharing this very intriguing journey to the meeting with the fur seals.

PS: While ago during a college trip, I flew AMS with KLM using a B747, and it is suprising that now they are (sometimes?) using a smaller aircraft.

Well done on your first Trans Atlantic flight - I remember you being quite excited by it in the weeks leading up to it.

KLM business doesn't look too bad actually, and with the enhancements that are coming up they should be pretty strong.

Salam Pak Suryo!

An excellent report on KLM and congratulations on your first transatlantic hop! Was it also Ariel's first time crossing the Atlantic?

I think KLM is a perfect choice for such a flight. They were my first choice for transatlantic for so many years in the past. Never had a bad experience! Always reliable and with great customer service at all times.

I really like the WBC meal presentation. Everything seems to work on that tray!

Many thanks for sharing this with us, and definitely looking forward to installment 2 of this much anticipated series!

Hi Suryo,

good to read another report from you, and it was indeed a very enjoyable read. Great to treat yourself to a business class flight with KLM for your first hop across the pond. Service on board really looked nice, but I wouldn't expect anything less from KLM. Also the food presentation looked good, interesting tableware and the cutlery.

Sorry to hear about the delay, but well, seems safety had the priority here. Hope it didn't impede your ongoing travels too much. Anyway looking forward to read the next part about your trips.

Greetings

A range of Face No. 3 ultra moisturizing face Lotion, Awareness mild facial cleansing milk, Cool Deo 24hr antiperspirant spray and Infinity ultra caring hand lotion from Rituals and liquid hand soap

Great to see them using this brand. I just had to purchase something in their shop at AMS last time I passed through.

All in all KLM looks good longhaul but the amenity kit doesn't seem anything special (QR do a much better one  ) and the cabin looks a bit tired & dated if you ask me.

I look forward to reading about what happened at YYZ.....

Happy flying & have a good week

I do use the Crown lounge, which has much better food options than the munchies offered by Sky Clubs at ATL/JFK and the like.

That is good to know.

One question though, is there a standalone SkyTeam lounge at AMS?

No, as N312RC has rightly said.

However it is impressive that the Captain gave a detailed explanation for the delay rather than the usual "operational reasons."

Indeed! Being proactive with the explanation whilst the details reflect his high level of expertise.

Quoting AyostoLeon (Reply 10):
The cheese portion seems a bit small but for the flight duration I suppose one would want too much.

Hola Roger,

Being delayed at AMS is not a great deal if you can relax on the Crown lounge, I have visited a couple of times and it was a great experience,

Who am I to disagree?

Quoting Rogerbcn (Reply 12):
although food was less than one can expect at some other lounges, there were not hot offerings when I was there, but it was OK for the time of the day, late morning,

I didn’t bother hot offerings either in anticipation of the meals on board.

Quoting Rogerbcn (Reply 12):
as long as wine and champgane are available I have not many more requests, cold cuts and crackers make a great company.

Quoting Rogerbcn (Reply 12):

Hi Lars!

Quoting The777Man (Reply 13):
Very nice ! I have visited there myself a few times.

Isn’t it great to spend your time there apart from spotting?

Quoting The777Man (Reply 13):
Very bad! The explanation of changing a tire sounds a bit strange because it usually doesn't take much more than 30 minutes to to a tire change on an aircraft, at least that's my experience. For KLM at their home base, it should not take two hours.

I am not familiar with the procedure, so I believe you.

Quoting The777Man (Reply 13):
Perhaps they had to wait for an aircraft or they had a routing change of the original aircraft.

I am not sure. PH-AOK was assigned for our flight from the very beginning when I checked the FIDS online the previous day.

Quoting The777Man (Reply 13):
Looks nice the design. Will probably come to good use for something else.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 33):
How nice! Did you like flying with TS?

The flight out was great, on one of their refurbished A330s. We paid for an emergency exit row, not realizing that it was also the main boarding door, so we were last on first off. Crew were friendly. Only complaint was that the flight was too short, which sounds silly, but by the time dinner was all done and we were feeling tired, we were already south of Iceland. I think I got maybe an hour of sleep. I think next time if we were to do the flight my mom would fly out here to YYC and we would go from here. The couple extra hours would probably make the flight a bit smoother.

On the way back we were on a full A310 which was a bit miserable, and the crew were abrupt and not very friendly on my side of the aircraft. (the other side seemed friendly and were smiling and making jokes). I had a great seat though and grabbed some excellent pics of Greenland. If you fly on TS make sure you get a A330.

The trip was awesome though, 2 days in the canal district of AMS and then south to Brabant to visit family

Quoting akhmad (Reply 33):
I have never been there. How did you enjoy the Acores?

The Acores are beautiful. if you get the chance to go it's totally worth it. We landed in Terceira and spent most of the trip on Pico. we also went over to Fial. Wonderful place in the summer, lots of fun and beautiful scenery. Well worth the trip. Also it was my first A330 and my only L1011 flight.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 33):

I'm sure I will. Just got to hope I can get a seat! The KL desk looked very busy. I will for sure be coming back to the Netherlands soon.

Suryo!

I took the time to read this TR, word-for-word, and per usual, I am so impressed by the level of energy, enthusiasm and wit you incorporate into the writing. It was truly a delightful experience to voyage on the KLM A330 with you across the Atlantic, and congrats on completing your journey.

Some thoughts:

+ The lounge in AMS looks fantastic. Absolutely loved the collection of the houses on the wall. I STILL have two of them as keepsake items that my grandmother bestowed upon me as a gift when I was 5 years old.

+ Very nice of KLM to provide refreshments during the delay. Truly, a global class airline.

+ The menu on-board looks mouthwatering, particularly the appetizer. I am a cheese addict, and watermelon is my favorite fruit. The presentation of the main courses, interestingly, don't seem to match up to the tune of the menu descriptions. Nevertheless, they seemed sumptuous!

+ Fantastic liquor selection on-board KLM

+ i think I may switch to SkyTeam when I move to Minneapolis!

Thanks again for a beautifully-written compose. I look forward to sharing more memories of such journeys when we all meet in person....soon!

Best,

-R

Hallelujaaaaaahhhh Suriejoooo!

Terimakasih banyak for this excellently written and pictured piece. Your reports are definitely not mainstream and that’s a compliment  . I’m happy to see mrs Ariel travelling along besides your usual companion Herman. Looks like you all enjoyed the KLM ‘show’ very much. Apart from the delay - which is perfectly well explained - this seems to have been a flight close to perfection with attentive service from the nice crew. Meals and ‘business class surpluses’ seem good as well. And last but not least, 23 years is a long long time... Good you broke that tradition

Hi Suryo,

a long report on a relative short standard Transatlantic KLM flight. It's nice to read again from you. Wow, a first transatlantic... yeah, I know you're more orientated East like I am

A lot of details at AMS, nothing special imho, but it might be special for others. I'm not overly impressed by AMS, but indeed the Rijksmuseum dependance is a nice extra which I always give a visit since I have interest in history paintings from Dutch masters.

Shame about the delay, good to hear they explained a bit about it. And since I know you made connection, all fine in the end   . Newspapers where just at the gate? No hand out in the cabin? I'm not used to this for Business Class and if differs from my experience.

Quoting akhmad (Thread starter):
How about adding A-R-I-E-L to your group, guys?’

No need for me actually

---

About the seat, real bad. That's all. KLM is way behind and there is no excuse. Currently a new cabin is installed on the 747-400 fleet and further on the fleet later.

The meal, it's nothing special. Did you know, despite all the bla-bla about 'famous' cooks etc., the KLM business class meals are frozen meals before being brought on board? They are less fresh then you get in business class on companies not catered by KLM catering. Alpha Catering in AMS supplies best quality inflight meals for business classes and have freshly cooked food every day prior loading on flights. KLM meals are OK though for me, but they are not special at all.

Nice to receive the houses, that's what makes KLM unique again from other airlines.

Looking forward for the continuation.

Eric

Hey Suryo,
I want to start by saying I am impressed again with the amount of detail, pictures which express the emotion and exitement you must have felt. Some of the check in procedures might seem pretty dull at first sight but reading your report you can imagine again that it also can be inspiring.

Quoting akhmad (Thread starter):
’It looks like we have to check you in at the airport, Ariel!’

Who's Ariel?

Quoting akhmad (Reply 1):
John Block, Martin Schröder, Albert Plesman or Peter Legro

I always see these guys when I walk from the train to the terminal. Anyone else think Peter Legro is a bit out of place? The first three founded legendary airlines, while Legro was a bit a colourless burocrat who led Transavia in a period, the the 1980s and 1990s, when they didn't do anything revolutionairy, when he retired Transavia was exactly like what they were in 1982 except for having newer 737 subtypes.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 3):
’And refreshments as cold comfort…’

Did they hand these out near the gate because of the delay or did you take these along from the lounge?

By the way did you consider to fly the MD-11 to YYZ instead, being the last chance to get on one? Did you spend time in Canada or did you go straight ahead to Lima? I will go to Canada again early october, really looking forward.
Or perhaps you got the MD-11 your return, or perhaps you'd prefer the newer A-330 anyway.
I can't wait to read your next report.
Cheers
Servaas

Excellent trip report as always Suryo! So glad to see that your first trans atlantic crossing was on KLM, an airline that I truly have a soft spot for.

In fact I flew AMS-YYZ-AMS a few months before you and can see a lot of similarities. I too did enjoy the lounge in AMS a lot. After the facelift in 2008, the new lounge is light years ahead of what it replaced. It truly is one of the best lounges in Europe in my opinion (but then again I have not tried too many.)

The meals are very Dutch and I personally like it this way as you get some local flair. Many years ago when I started flying KLM, the meals were more international and many times failed to live up to the mark. I think going Dutch is the way to go for KLM! Holland is such an amazing place and I am glad to see KLM embrace the local culture onboard.

As you mentioned, the cabin crew are really what sets KLM apart from their counterparts. You can always count on them for some warm Dutch hospitality. Hopefully when KLM installs the next generation WBC seats, the experience will become even better.

Looking forward to the up coming trip reports as always.

Congratulations Suryo, even my first ever transatlantic flight was on KLM way back in 1989 enroute to the USA. It does bring back some vague memories which I remember and more so to my father who still cherishes his flights on KLM.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 2):

It does indeed look peaceful!

Glad to know the crew were the highlight of the trip. I too remember getting a badge of a "junior pilot" by the KLM crew and a tour to the flight deck. I guess KLM knows how to make a trip memorable!

Once again, thanks for all the pictures .... does add that complete touch to your trip report.

It was truly a delightful experience to voyage on the KLM A330 with you across the Atlantic
Quoting sultanils (Reply 37):
Your reports are definitely not mainstream and that’s a compliment   .
Quoting MEA-707 (Reply 39):
I want to start by saying I am impressed again with the amount of detail, pictures which express the emotion and exitement you must have felt.
Quoting SpdBrdConcorde (Reply 42):
Great TR Suryo...Totally refreshing style of writing and a as always a pleasure to read.
Quoting SR 103 (Reply 43):
Excellent trip report as always Suryo!
Quoting ojas (Reply 44):
As always an excellent TR Suryo!

Thank you so much for the sweet words.

R, Anosh,

Quoting IrishAyes (Reply 36):
The lounge in AMS looks fantastic.
Quoting SR 103 (Reply 43):
I too did enjoy the lounge in AMS a lot. After the facelift in 2008, the new lounge is light years ahead of what it replaced. It truly is one of the best lounges in Europe in my opinion

Truly stylish environment with plenty of privacy and space.

**********************************************************

R, Ojas,

Quoting IrishAyes (Reply 36):
Thanks again for a beautifully-written compose.
Quoting ojas (Reply 44):
Once again, thanks for all the pictures .... does add that complete touch to your trip report.

You are most welcome.

**********************************************************

Nils, Eric,

Quoting sultanils (Reply 37):
Good to see that KLM is able to hold one to some traditions at least.
Quoting airbuseric (Reply 38):
Nice to receive the houses, that's what makes KLM unique again from other airlines.

Absolutely!

**********************************************************

Nils, Anosh, Ojas,

Quoting sultanils (Reply 37):
Apart from the delay - which is perfectly well explained - this seems to have been a flight close to perfection with attentive service from the nice crew.
Quoting SR 103 (Reply 43):
As you mentioned, the cabin crew are really what sets KLM apart from their counterparts. You can always count on them for some warm Dutch hospitality.
Quoting ojas (Reply 44):
Glad to know the crew were the highlight of the trip.
Quoting ojas (Reply 44):
I too remember getting a badge of a "junior pilot" by the KLM crew and a tour to the flight deck. I guess KLM knows how to make a trip memorable!

Courteous and friendly, typically KLM as always.

**********************************************************

Eric, Servaas, Anosh,

Quoting airbuseric (Reply 38):
Looking forward for the continuation.
Quoting MEA-707 (Reply 39):
I can't wait to read your next report.
Quoting SR 103 (Reply 43):
Looking forward to the up coming trip reports as always.

Thank you for encouraging.

**********************************************************

Hi Lars!

Quoting The777Man (Reply 34):
For a few minutes.....   and only when the paintings are from the Rijksmuseum.

All of the works on view come from the Rijksmuseum collection.

Quoting The777Man (Reply 34):
The first flight of something is always more memorable;
Quoting The777Man (Reply 34):
memories....

I cannot agree more!

Quoting The777Man (Reply 34):
my first Trans-Pac flight was on Philippine Airlines and it was really great; three seats to myself and great food. Plane was only about two months old....

WOW! I have yet to experience my first Trans-Pac flight.

**********************************************************

YYZatcboy,

Quoting YYZatcboy (Reply 35):
The flight out was great, on one of their refurbished A330s.

Cool! Did you fly the 3-3-3 or the 2-4-2 one?

Quoting YYZatcboy (Reply 35):
We paid for an emergency exit row, not realizing that it was also the main boarding door, so we were last on first off.

Nice!

Quoting YYZatcboy (Reply 35):
Crew were friendly.

That’s the way I like it!

Quoting YYZatcboy (Reply 35):
Only complaint was that the flight was too short, which sounds silly, but by the time dinner was all done and we were feeling tired, we were already south of Iceland.
Quoting YYZatcboy (Reply 35):
I think I got maybe an hour of sleep.
Quoting YYZatcboy (Reply 35):
I think next time if we were to do the flight my mom would fly out here to YYC and we would go from here. The couple extra hours would probably make the flight a bit smoother.

I can understand. After traveling through The Middle East bound for South East Asia several times, Herman and I appreciated our transit in Hong Kong just better due to the longer flight from AMS.

Quoting YYZatcboy (Reply 35):
On the way back we were on a full A310 which was a bit miserable,
Quoting YYZatcboy (Reply 35):
If you fly on TS make sure you get a A330.

To be honest, I prefer flying with the more exotic A310 to A330.

Quoting YYZatcboy (Reply 35):
the crew were abrupt and not very friendly on my side of the aircraft. (the other side seemed friendly and were smiling and making jokes).

Shame!

Quoting YYZatcboy (Reply 35):
I had a great seat though and grabbed some excellent pics of Greenland.

That is good to hear!

Quoting YYZatcboy (Reply 35):
then south to Brabant to visit family

My mother-in-law lives in Brabant.

Quoting YYZatcboy (Reply 35):
We landed in Terceira and spent most of the trip on Pico. we also went over to Fial. Wonderful place in the summer, lots of fun and beautiful scenery. Well worth the trip.
Quoting YYZatcboy (Reply 35):
The Acores are beautiful. if you get the chance to go it's totally worth it.

I believe you.

Quoting YYZatcboy (Reply 35):
Also it was my first A330

How exciting!

Quoting YYZatcboy (Reply 35):
my only L1011 flight.

A L1011? I have never been on any Tri-jet at all! I envy you on that!

Quoting YYZatcboy (Reply 35):
I'm sure I will. Just got to hope I can get a seat! The KL desk looked very busy.

I do hope you succeed.

Quoting YYZatcboy (Reply 35):
I will for sure be coming back to the Netherlands soon.

Let me know if you are around.

Quoting YYZatcboy (Reply 35):
If you are ever flying on WS be sure to let me know.

I definitely will.

**********************************************************

R!

Quoting IrishAyes (Reply 36):
I took the time to read this TR, word-for-word,

I truly feel honored.

Quoting IrishAyes (Reply 36):
I STILL have two of them as keepsake items that my grandmother bestowed upon me as a gift when I was 5 years old.

I would have done the same thing with such precious gift.

Quoting IrishAyes (Reply 36):
Absolutely loved the collection of the houses on the wall.

Your keepsake items may be among them.

Quoting IrishAyes (Reply 36):
Very nice of KLM to provide refreshments during the delay. Truly, a global class airline.

Absolutely!

Quoting IrishAyes (Reply 36):
particularly the appetizer
Quoting IrishAyes (Reply 36):
watermelon is my favorite fruit.

That explains everything.

Quoting IrishAyes (Reply 36):
I am a cheese addict,

Then you must love my favorite paneer as well!

Quoting IrishAyes (Reply 36):
The presentation of the main courses, interestingly, don't seem to match up to the tune of the menu descriptions. Nevertheless, they seemed sumptuous!

It was one of the best meal I ever had on board.

Quoting IrishAyes (Reply 36):
+ Fantastic liquor selection on-board KLM

Because of Amarula?

Quoting IrishAyes (Reply 36):
+ i think I may switch to SkyTeam when I move to Minneapolis!

It would be a nice tribute to Northwest Airlines.

Quoting IrishAyes (Reply 36):
I look forward to sharing more memories of such journeys when we all meet in person....soon!

I would love to!

**********************************************************

Hallelujaaaaaahhhh Nils!

Quoting sultanils (Reply 37):
Terimakasih banyak for this excellently written and pictured piece
Sama-sama!

Quoting sultanils (Reply 37):
I’m happy to see mrs Ariel travelling

Thank you. Ariel is a he, by the way!

Quoting sultanils (Reply 37):
Looks like you all enjoyed the KLM ‘show’ very much.

We truly enjoyed the comfort, attention to detail and personal care.

Quoting sultanils (Reply 37):
And last but not least, 23 years is a long long time...

It was just meant to be.

Quoting sultanils (Reply 37):
I think I know where you are heading. Déja-vu grande lol!

Quoting sultanils (Reply 37):
You tell me now? Albert P!

Quoting sultanils (Reply 37):

Memorable weekend it was!

Quoting sultanils (Reply 37):
Calm? It seems to be quite busy when I do a headcount, no?

Yes, but without bubbling cacophony of voices as the free Wi-Fi kept everyone occupied.

Quoting sultanils (Reply 37):
Nice trivium, I didn’t know that.

My pleasure.

Quoting sultanils (Reply 37):
Which one: ‘Farmaceut misleidde zwangere’

Oh no! I did miss the headline!

Quoting sultanils (Reply 37):
My favourite

Really? Good to know!

Quoting sultanils (Reply 37):
And some traffic down below, lovely!

Thank you.

**********************************************************

Hi Eric,

Quoting airbuseric (Reply 38):
a long report on a relative short standard Transatlantic KLM flight. It's nice to read again from you.

Thank you.

Quoting airbuseric (Reply 38):
yeah, I know you're more orientated East like I am

Quoting airbuseric (Reply 38):
A lot of details at AMS, nothing special imho, but it might be special for others. I'm not overly impressed by AMS,

Fair enough.

Quoting airbuseric (Reply 38):
but indeed the Rijksmuseum dependance is a nice extra which I always give a visit since I have interest in history paintings from Dutch masters.

Good to know that.

Quoting airbuseric (Reply 38):
Shame about the delay, good to hear they explained a bit about it.

Definitely!

Quoting airbuseric (Reply 38):
And since I know you made connection, all fine in the end   .

Quoting airbuseric (Reply 38):
Newspapers where just at the gate? No hand out in the cabin? I'm not used to this for Business Class and if differs from my experience.

Newspapers were being distributed in the cabin as well, but I did not bother it.

Quoting airbuseric (Reply 38):
No need for me actually

I know.

Quoting airbuseric (Reply 38):
About the seat, real bad. That's all. KLM is way behind and there is no excuse.

The cabin is indeed not fitted with horizontal lie flat seats, but angled, 170-175 degrees reclinable Sleeper seats.

Quoting airbuseric (Reply 38):
Currently a new cabin is installed on the 747-400 fleet and further on the fleet later.

Quoting airbuseric (Reply 38):
The meal, it's nothing special. Did you know, despite all the bla-bla about 'famous' cooks etc., the KLM business class meals are frozen meals before being brought on board? They are less fresh then you get in business class on companies not catered by KLM catering
Quoting airbuseric (Reply 38):
KLM meals are OK though for me, but they are not special at all.

Fair enough.

Quoting airbuseric (Reply 38):
Alpha Catering in AMS supplies best quality inflight meals for business classes and have freshly cooked food every day prior loading on flights.

Good to know.

**********************************************************

Hey Servaas,

Quoting MEA-707 (Reply 39):
Some of the check in procedures might seem pretty dull at first sight but reading your report you can imagine again that it also can be inspiring.

Thank you.

Quoting MEA-707 (Reply 39):
Who's Ariel?

My alter ego.

Quoting MEA-707 (Reply 39):
I always see these guys when I walk from the train to the terminal.

I have always missed them apparently until last May 27.

Quoting MEA-707 (Reply 39):
Anyone else think Peter Legro is a bit out of place? The first three founded legendary airlines, while Legro was a bit a colourless burocrat who led Transavia in a period, the the 1980s and 1990s, when they didn't do anything revolutionairy, when he retired Transavia was exactly like what they were in 1982 except for having newer 737 subtypes.

If you say so, then someone else should be better in place. What do you think of Anthony Fokker?

Quoting MEA-707 (Reply 39):
Did they hand these out near the gate because of the delay or did you take these along from the lounge?

The refreshments were handed out near the gate.

Quoting MEA-707 (Reply 39):
By the way did you consider to fly the MD-11 to Quoting MEA-707 (Reply 39):
Or perhaps you got the MD-11 your return,

I wished. KLM was using a mix of B-747 and A-330 for the last winter schedule.

Quoting MEA-707 (Reply 39):
Did you spend time in Canada or did you go straight ahead to Lima?

We spent our time in Canada only during the layover.

Quoting MEA-707 (Reply 39):
I will go to Canada again early october, really looking forward.

How nice!

Quoting MEA-707 (Reply 39):
or perhaps you'd prefer the newer A-330 anyway.

A-330 was fine. But, it would have been great as well to fly with MD-11.

**********************************************************

flightsimboy,

Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 40):
Are you two really meeting up? lol..........

Not yet.

Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 40):
I would be so upset ha,ha....considering we were supposed to meet Suryo...

I know..

Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 40):
FYI I still have not recovered from it....it's like how could that have ever happened...how!!!

I have the same feeling, my friend.

Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 40):
....Okay I'll put it to rest now....

We should never give up! We will definitely meet each other somehow!

**********************************************************

Leo,

Quoting LFutia (Reply 41):
I need to come to NL and spend 2 weeks going around meeting everyone - Eric, Martijn, Brendan, Suryo, Servaas and a nice handful of other people!

That would be great!

Quoting LFutia (Reply 41):
I'm hoping that Suryo will treat me to some Indonesian food!

Be my guest!

Quoting LFutia (Reply 41):
You all are welcome in Chicago!!

Thank you for the invitation!

**********************************************************

Anosh,

Quoting SR 103 (Reply 43):
In fact I flew AMS-AMS a few months before you and can see a lot of similarities.

What do you think of consistency? Our experiences were just evident!

Quoting SR 103 (Reply 43):
(but then again I have not tried too many.)

Neither have I.

Quoting SR 103 (Reply 43):
The meals are very Dutch and I personally like it this way as you get some local flair. Many years ago when I started flying KLM, the meals were more international and many times failed to live up to the mark. I think going Dutch is the way to go for KLM! Holland is such an amazing place and I am glad to see KLM embrace the local culture onboard.

I am so glad that you distinguish KLM’s efforts that way.

Quoting SR 103 (Reply 43):
Hopefully when KLM installs the next generation WBC seats, the experience will become even better.

I am confident about it.

**********************************************************

Ojas,

Quoting ojas (Reply 44):
even my first ever transatlantic flight was on KLM way back in 1989 enroute to the USA. It does bring back some vague memories which I remember and more so to my father who still cherishes his flights on KLM.

Sweet memories.

Quoting ojas (Reply 44):
It does indeed look peaceful!

Away from the hectic environment of the airport!

**********************************************************

Kameraden,

Once again, thank you so much for all your heartwarming replies! Have a nice weekend!

Hey Suryo !

Nice and detailed report of your KLM longhaul flight !
KLM is good airline in my mind, I also like their Business class seats on the longhaul fleet, I think on dayflights those seats are perfect, I flew on SWISS new longhaul seats 2 weeks ago, and I wans't impressed at all, those ''new'' seats are always very tight and not larger than Economy seats. So I think if I should fly in the future to North America, KLM may be an option. Also their on board meal service looks quite good.

You have a point here!

The Dutch quality at its best with excellent comfort   .

Quoting akhmad (Reply 33):
Correct. KLM deployed both B747 and A330 for YYZ the last winter schedule.

Nice and lucky! you got some change as most reports would be onboard the usual Queen of the Skies!

Bravo. I would rather hope you raised a glass to me! But the Whisky selection was very poor on the menu.

It is nice you chose your home airline Suryo. I still find their blue colour-scheme very distinctive (and clearly KLM blue by now), but also a little dated.

Who knows!

Off to Canada in a month! Argh!

Have you tried KL's J Class yet on a long-haul flight?

As for Swiss - the new J Class seat is 20.5 inches wide which beats the KLM seat. I also recommend to check seat width statistics if you are convinced that the Swiss J Class seat "is not larger than Economy seats". Which Economy Class seat is 20.5 inches wide? And which Economy Class seat gives you individual armrests on both sides even when the seat next to you is occupied?

Are you serious? Because KLM New World Business Class resembles the SWISS one and will supposedly be more comfortable than ever.

Quoting Emek96 (Reply 46):
So I think if I should fly in the future to North America, KLM may be an option.

You will love KLM!

Quoting Emek96 (Reply 46):
Also their on board meal service looks quite good.

High quality meals prepared by top Dutch chefs. Since December 1, 2012 it is the honor of Richard Ekkebus.
