Hello all and welcome to my latest report. This time it was to try out a new route and airport for my log.

I had read good things about SEN so had always had it in my mind to try out sometime. I booked online at short notice and the fare EUR97.

The morning came and I made my way to Dublin Airport. Irish holiday season in full swing the airport bus and airport were quite busy. Lucky most of them were still at check in stage by 0445am so the security area was not busy at all. I passed through fast track in a matter of minutes.

As usual attentive and friendly staff and a delicious muffin  http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/EIRSEN/file_zps6e864166.jpg

Then it was time to head to the Aer Lingus GC lounge .

Free entry for the following guests. I was welcomed in with a ''Good morning Sir'' and invited in. Thats the kind of staff you want.

The one thing I love about the Irish Summer is the daylight at 5am. The lounge got quite full from 0530 until 0630 but then emptied again. I guess the poor sods who have to commute to LHR BRU FRA etc... Its bad enough being up at that time for pleasure! The one thing I always notice is that the upper level never gets busy and I guess maybe people forget there is an upper level.

Soon it was time to head to the B Gates now renamed the 300 gates but I prefer the former. They have been refurbing this area and its not too bad. This is in Terminal 1 by the way and not in Terminal 2 where you check in.

Now they never bothered to change the screens so people arriving kept asking if this was the Southend flight. This never changed throughout the boarding process. I thought that was a bit lazy and Im sure not the way things are supposed to be done. Also a Family of 8 Americans had arrived off a TATL flight and their bags were not off that one yet and they were refused boarding onto the flight. They begged the staff at the gate to let them fly and send the bags on but they were told it was against Aer Lingus policy and they off loaded them. I thought that the handling of this situation was done in a very cold way and the passengers were clearly upset. The ground staff could have been more understanding in their dealing with them.

I also heard a few complaining about the fact they had to check in at T2 only to walk over to T1.

Finally it was time for me to board the bus. No priority boarding for Gold Circle members. We were all on the bus but we were not going anywhere. We were left standing for 10 minutes before we finally got bused over to the other end of the airport.

We arrived finally at the aircraft and I saw my reg. I was greeted by a vry friendly FA called Audrey so that lifted the bad boarding / bus experience.

This aircraft has seen better days. Very tired and worn looking. No EI-FAS for me today but lets hope with the two new ones coming online into the fleet that this will change.

After seeing the model in the brochure and then again on Audrey's trolley it was time for me to take out the good old reliable Visa card. EUR14 not bad at all and good quality. Also I had a nice chat with her and she had been operating the new EI-FAS aircraft the previous day and said it was lovely to work in.

We parked and disembarked and I thanked Audrey for a pleasant flight.

So it was time to head to the train station and start the first of two trains and a tube journey. The ticket price was GBP18 oneway which was quite expensive.

I had always wanted to see the Vulcan in real life and I was not dissapointed. Such an amazing design. Some great views from the platform whilst waiting for the train.

So after just under two hours with a change of trains at Stratford and London Waterloo I was finally at my Mums house. For the next two days we did some shopping and met with my Sister for a day out and lunch. Of course we also went for lunch at Jimmys Spices which was as good as ever.

I had arranged for the Friday and Saturday to head to Portsmouth to meet a mate so early on the Friday morning I took the train to Portsmouth. The day was dull with some rain but still did not spoil the day.

After a lovely walk around historic Portsmouth we decided to do something I had always wanted to and take a flight on the Hovercraft

I also remember when SAS used to use them too:

I remember in the old SK Timetable seeing the seat maps and always wanted to try it.

I have to say it was great to finally be doing it. Not many of these around these days so best to do it whilst I can. Tickets were only GBP5 each way and soon we were boarding.

We were all set and soon the engines started and we lifted up and then hovered off sideways into the sea. That was a cool experience.

The crossing was very smooth and soon the 10 minutes crossing was over and we were at the Hover port in Ryde. We disembarked and I took a few more shots .

Right next door is a fun fair but sadly nothing compared to what it used to be. As a Kid we used to come down here for the day sometimes and it was great. These days its a much smaller and quieter place. Still it was nice to see it again after all these years.

After that we went to my mates local Indian restaurant. The place was packed but he managed to get us a table being a regular. Have to say the meal was lovely.

After a while check in was due to open so I headed inside. There were two Spanish guys ahead of me waiting to check in also. After a while and long past the scheduled opening time still no sign. Even a girl from Easyjet asked if we were still waiting to check in . Eventually 40 minutes late a guy turned up and opened check in. In fairness to him he did say sorry for the late opening and said they were short staffed. It still was annoying that only one guy is available to handle the EI flight and no one else could be called to do it. Also no Mobile check in is available from this airport which is something EI and SEN need to address. This is supposed to be a business route so these days many use smartphones ! Also no choice of seats was offered but I was happy with 4A anyway.

The next delay was security. What seemed a one man band asked people to take off belts and put liquids into the trays then proceeded to go to the scanner and screen the bags then come back to do another few pasengers. A bit weird in this day and age. Normally you have at least two doing this job.

Finally I got to the lounge entrance where I was asked for my card and also oddly enough for my booking reference. Lucky I had a copy of my E ticket which I always carry.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/EIRSEN/file_zps5cd35a1a.jpg

Once inside I was impressed. Modern and cosy and a decent range of drinks and snacks. The wifi was a pain. The system is they need to set you up a temporary username and password which took the girl about 5 mins. Why they dont have a general password like other lounges I do not know it would have been alot quicker.

All passengers get 2 hours ''slow'' internet as they advertise on the log in/sign up page. Then you pay 0.01 per hour via credit card after that. All a bit weird to be honest. Just offer 2 hours free fast internet!!

At the top of the stairs we were greeted by a quite strong willed matron type FA . She was pleaant but very firm. It was baking by this point and the cabin was so hot so maybe she was a bit fed up. The newish type leather seats.

Boarding had commenced and the FA came over the PA and said she knew it was like a sauna in the cabin and that it would get better once the engines had started. Sadly it didnt until nearly the end of the flight ! She came round to do her pre take off check. Not in a good mood she spoke quite harshly to the two Spanish guys who didnt have a great command of English. They were at the exit rows and of course everything had to go overhead. ''UP UP everything UP '' she shouted. Also another guy on the other side was barked at about his jumper. She also shouted '' IF YOU DONT UNDERSTAND ENGLISH I WILL MOVE YOU AND TWO PEOPLE THAT SPEAK ENGLISH CAN SIT THERE INSTEAD''. It was a bit condescending.

Soon after I arrived at the immigration control. Sadly Dublin Airport do not offer a seperate channel under the CTA agreement and dump you with everyone else coming from USA/Middle East/Europe and other non CTA countries. There is no fast channel like the UK provides for arriving Irish CTA flights which is quite bad. The lines were back to the boarding gates and it took ages to clear.

So thats the end of my report. Hope you all enjoyed it.

Aer Lingus Regional were decent enough. Not as polished as the Aer Lingus jet service. A bit of a mixed bag the return was not as smooth as the way out.

Southend Airport is pleasant Im sure with the extension it will be much better. The check in issue maybe was a once off but mobile BP pass introduction would be an advantage on this route. I look forward to trying out the new additions to the fleet with much better interior product.

I look forward to all your comments as usual.

Kind regards

Philip / OA260

Very nice report Philip, nice to see you trying this route as well.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
I was greeted by a vry friendly FA called Audrey so that lifted the bad boarding / bus experience.

Same FA that was on my SEN-DUB flight last month, very friendly and she was working with another lady who was around the same age and they seemed to get on well together which meant they worked well and created a very nice atmosphere on board.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
Normally you have at least two doing this job.

In the mornings when I've flown from SEN it always seems overstaffed for such a small airport, usually 3 or 4 of them working in security which makes the process very easy.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
It was a bit condescending.

Not acceptable in my opinion, I understand the situation with the heat but those are the type of things you have to deal with and an FA just has to get on with it. I'd be more forgiving if the passengers were giving her trouble, don't like seeing them messed about by silly passengers but that doesn't sound like the case here.

Those ATR's are unbearably hot, even in average summer temperatures they turn into saunas. Aer Lingus Regional don't offer the hot meals on board because of the lack of ovens but they could probably toast a few sandwiches in no time by sticking them by the windows! Hope the new -600s have better air con.

Kevin

I also heard a few complaining about the fact they had to check in at T2 only to walk over to T1.

Doesn't sound very professional. And so annoying when you have to walk for miles to a gate, only to be bussed somewhere else.

Cool, I had no idea there were still commerical hovercraft in the UK. I remember as a little kid going down to Dover to take the hovercraft to Calais, but it was cancelled because of the high wind, so we went to Dover castle instead

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
Eventually 40 minutes late a guy turned up and opened check in. In fairness to him he did say sorry for the late opening and said they were short staffed. Also no Mobile check in is available from this airport which is something EI and SEN need to address.

Not very professional

Great report - nice to see EI-EHH again. She was my bird down from IOM to LCY back when Aer Arann flew the route. She is certainly old - built in 1990 I think.

Sorry the service on the way back was a bit hit and miss.

Nice to see your experience at SEN too - it seems to be doing really well and quite amazing they are already extending the terminal there.

Also a Family of 8 Americans had arrived off a TATL flight and their bags were not off that one yet and they were refused boarding onto the flight. They begged the staff at the gate to let them fly and send the bags on but they were told it was against Aer Lingus policy and they off loaded them.

Wow that's a bit harsh to start the day, they will remember for ever EI ground staff

Good day Philip!

Nice to see a 'different' report from you! EI Regional indeed seems a bit of a mixed bag and also the SEN experience is an old fashioned one in a modern environment. I agree that needs to be adressed or at least streamlined a bit more. Any idea what that DAT ATR was doing there. And man, SEN is a large scrapyard! Sad sight to see the SN B737's melting away there...

Thanks for another one of your excellent TRs - I am especially pleased to see SEN featured! Excellent pictures too! I traveled on the Hovercraft service a few years ago - your pictures brought back memories!

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
Soon it was time to land into SEN. Flying in it seemed like it was in the middle of no where.

Certainly does seem so from the approach to Runway 24 - however the complete opposite is the case from the other end (as you can see from your departure shots) - which caused some problems (to say the least) when the airprot sought to extend its runway!

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
She also shouted '' IF YOU DONT UNDERSTAND ENGLISH I WILL MOVE YOU AND TWO PEOPLE THAT SPEAK ENGLISH CAN SIT THERE INSTEAD''. It was a bit condescending.

Very snappy - she clearly was having a bad day! I've used the service a few times now and found the crew to be consistently excellent. Not the way to treat passengers under any circumstances.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
After a while and long past the scheduled opening time still no sign. Even a girl from Easyjet asked if we were still waiting to check in . Eventually 40 minutes late a guy turned up and opened check in. In fairness to him he did say sorry for the late opening and said they were short staffed. It still was annoying that only one guy is available to handle the EI flight and no one else could be called to do it.

Also not impressive! All of the ground staff are employed by the airport owner - however I suspect the difficulty lies in the training, as easyJet and Aer Lingus use different check in systems. Online check in really ought to be in place by now!

And as with the Arik - been at Southend for several years now in storage - however signs are that another NIgerian outfit wants it! A lot of Nigerian aircraft at Southend - with First Nation and Aero Contractors also pictured by you!

Thanks again for the excellent trip report - much enjoyed!

Hi Philip.

Thanks for the report, nice pictures as well.

The EI ATR´s sure look old and tatty.

Portsmouth, I´ve been there, quite liked the place, did you managed a bit of shopping in the outlet mall? (forgot the name)

Also pretty cool ride on the Hovercraft, I lived in England for like 5 years and never knew this service existed (I just thought it was only to cross the channel) Isle of Wight looks OK, usual British seaside town which is not my thing but nonetheless nice.

SEN looks nice, but 1 hour from London... ugh.

In the Aviation museum in BOH airport, there used to be (or maybe it is still there) a nose section of a Vulcan and you could go up on it, pretty cool! there was also a BAC 1-11 and other cool stuff.

The attitude of the FA is totally out of order, I can understand you are having a bad day, but you still need to do your job in a professional manner.

Hi there Philip, great read there. Really should try out SEN although it seems a bit of a pain to get to. The £18 you paid for the train fare seemed pretty cheap considering it's going to cost me £31 to get back from STN at the weekend!

Nice pictures of Portsmouth too. Really should go back soon considering it's only around a 45 minute drive. I didn't realise the hovercraft was so cheap either - sat and watched it many times - but never been on it! Might have to look at that while we still have the sunshine.

You didn't miss much up the Spinnaker tower - I'm of the opinion they built it the wrong way, meaning the only views you get are of the IOW in the distance and a few ferries!

Not too keen on the tower at Portsmouth, it looks like a cheap Dubai copy!

Oh yes, this is something I really miss in Switzerland.

A rather grounded Indian airline.

A familiar sight here at ZRH too.

'' IF YOU DONT UNDERSTAND ENGLISH I WILL MOVE YOU AND TWO PEOPLE THAT SPEAK ENGLISH CAN SIT THERE INSTEAD''. It was a bit condescending.

Sounds like she was having a bad day....

Happy flying

Dear Philip,

First of all, your mother must be very proud of you for being a great son.

Now, let's go to the trip

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
As usual attentive and friendly staff and a delicious muffin

That’s what I call an addictive morning sin!

Quoting OA260 (Reply 1):
The one thing I always notice is that the upper level never gets busy and I guess maybe people forget there is an upper level.

Top secret.

Quoting OA260 (Reply 2):
Also a Family of 8 Americans had arrived off a TATL flight and their bags were not off that one yet and they were refused boarding onto the flight. They begged the staff at the gate to let them fly and send the bags on but they were told it was against Aer Lingus policy and they off loaded them. I thought that the handling of this situation was done in a very cold way and the passengers were clearly upset.

Was the American family incoming on EI flight? If so, the whole ordeal was just outrageous!

Quoting OA260 (Reply 6):
Tickets were only GBP5 each way

That’s a steal!

Quoting OA260 (Reply 8):
One last shot of this cool invention and a childhood wish fulfilled

Congratulation!

Quoting OA260 (Reply 9):
Have to say the meal was lovely.

It looks delicious!

Quoting OA260 (Reply 11):
head to the Georgian Tea Rooms for some light refreshment.

Tea, scones and clotted cream! I’d have loved to join you!

Quoting OA260 (Reply 11):
Not for me

Not for me either.

Quoting OA260 (Reply 12):
In fairness to him he did say sorry for the late opening and said they were short staffed.

Poor guy! I hope he did not get barked at.

Quoting OA260 (Reply 12):
Cant go wrong with Cadburys !

Quoting OA260 (Reply 12):
She also shouted '' IF YOU DONT UNDERSTAND ENGLISH I WILL MOVE YOU AND TWO PEOPLE THAT SPEAK ENGLISH CAN SIT THERE INSTEAD''

That’s harsh!

Just look how you turn regular family visit into an exciting trip every time! Impressive!

Thank you for sharing this experience!

All the very bests,
Suryo

Yes indeed ! How many Hail Marys for that ?

Yes they were EI - EI USA-DUB-EDI. So I thought they could have done more than they did. To them it was just another missed connection.

No dont think he did
