After picking up the menu, realized that this flight was specially picked to sample First Class in-flight menu, as a trial run to GA having its own F class when their B773ER comes online to services to Gatwick and Jeddah.

The crew admitted to me that all SYD flights are being trialed for the F class meal service with on board chef. After take off I just watched a few shows on my iPad before heading to bed. By the time I woke up, most of my fellow passengers in J had already awoken and have been starting to have their breakfast.

A surprisingly smartly and attractive breakfast. I ordered the Japanese choice

Date: 21 June 2013
Route: Sydney (SYD) - Gold Coast (OOL)
Flight: Private
ETD: 1035
ETA: 1137
Seat: Private
Aircraft: Cessna Citation III
Flight time: 1hr00mins
Registration: VH-SSZ
1st Flight:
My private jet flight was a bit of a drama in Sydney, in the beginning, Premier 1A VH-TMA based out of Wollongong was my original charter, but 24 hours before the flight, the aircraft had gone tech with a fault in the auto pilot. So they replaced it with former 500CC world champion Mick Doohan’s Citation VII , but again this aircraft had a bat, yes, BAT strike upon take off from OOL at 0400 hrs as it was heading to SYD to pick me up. So in the end it was 3rd time lucky and the excellent company which I use for my charters managed to get VH-SSQ to take me to OOL. As per all private charters, this flight was great from start to finish with a fantastic cockpit crew.

Video of take off from SYD to OOL

Date: 29 June 2013
Route: Goldcoast (OOL) - Sydney (SYD)
Flight: Private
ETD: 0810
ETA: 0931
Seat: Private
Aircraft: Beechcraft Premier1
Flight time: 1hr15mins
Registration: VH-TMA
1st Flight:
A rainy day in the Gold Coast, arrived at the FBo with 15mins to go before my ETD to SYD. This time my original charter aircraft, Premier 1A VH-TMA will be taking me back to SYD. It was cloudy and raining all the way into SYD. Other than that the flight itself was great and I really love the room in the Premier 1A. In my opinion, the Premier 1 has the best headroom of all the light jets.

By the time we got to Sydney, we had about 1.5hrs before departure. It was a rush for us as my wife still had tax refund to sort out. By the time we got through immigration and security, we had no time for the lounge and just headed directly to the gate.

As usual being Sydney, boarding was 10mins late and pushback was 30mins late. By the time we took off we were about 40mins behind schedule. But that is the norm now with Sydney's ATC congestion. Crew was polite and welcoming as usual and as on the inbound flight, this flight also trialed the upcoming F service in terms of meal and presentation. Food and presentation were fine, but this crew were really slow in serving the meals, by the time I got my meal, we were already 3 hours into the flight.

Overall besides the fact the meal was served pretty late, it was a perfect flight, and we also arrived in CGK on time with minimal holding time above CGK. Looking forward to my next long haul flight to HKG.

Great that GA is trialling the F meals on normal C flights - the catering looks great too, although it seems a little odd to be offereing a Japanese selection on flights from CGK-SYD?

Hi Gab, how have you been. I was also surprised that they are going to offer Japanese food on this sector on the trial F flight. But after talking to the cabin crew, they said that Japanese meal is offered for all F routes in future. GA currently has one 773ER online and flies only to Jeddah. So pretty funny that they will serve Jap meals on this sector hahahah

Looks great, but likewise why Japenese food on all First class flights; also there was a tray in First class for the breakfast.  Wow! Couldn't they lay it out on the linen?

maybe because Japanese food looks better presented, ridiculous if that's the reason.

well their F cabin has only 4 seats if I am not wrong, whilst the trial was carried out on J on an A332 with 30+ J seats, so i guess they had to use a tray to rush things a little

actually they have 3 choices, an indonesian, japanese and also western breakfast, but I love japanese food, so that why I went for the Japanese choice.

Hi thaia345. Thanks for your 'delicious' TR...nom, nom, nom  You're so lucky to have experienced a taste of GA's FCL catering before the rest of us. I flew SYD-DEN return last October and was quite impressed with their meals in business class. GA seem quite responsive to criticisms/suggestions now, and I noted that they had improved their cheese selection by the time that I flew. Your preview is definitely a step-up and I can't wait for the introduction of their first class to the UK.......Nice to see they also have Aigner amenity kits now. You gotta love an airline that picks itself up from the ground like they did. Take care!

GA's turnaround based on their Quantum Leap turn around program really panned out, and the results is definitely there for all to see and experience. Like many others, make a rewind to 10 years ago, GA is an airline which I actually would avoid and not consider on my travels, but fast forward to today, its continously an airline which I will consider for my trips.

Thanks for reading!

Hi Thaia

How are you,

Very interesting report, in particular to see the beauiful japanese meal set. It looks even better than the same set i had for dinner at one of nice japanese restourant in 5 stars hotel in jakarta just last night   .

3 weeks a go flew GA biz class to Hong-Kong, i have to say the meals presentation is much better compared to previous flight to Hong Kong. Seems they are working hard to become what's called a "5 stars airline". Looking forward to read your next TRs.

Cheers.

Actually they have 8 seats with 1-2-1 Configuration based on their seat maps. How's the taste? Was the food experience near to what SQ and CX First offer ?

Food presentation was excellent from your picture.

Thanks for reading, and yes, they are working very hard to try and achieve a 5 star rating

Taste wise, it was quite ok, but SQ and CX are still better. SO GA will have 8 seats in F. But I really do not why they are sending the early flights all to Jeddah. High end Umroh travellers i guess?

I was thinking the same, why Jeddah? Instead why not doing Australia or Japan, maybe because they are still doing food trial for their F product and training their F crew. Although the idea was nice, But then serving 30 people on J class as their food trial run kind a little bit too much to do, why not trying to practice them in their 777 before they fly it to Europe. Get the crew to practice in the real type of plane with real situation. Serving 8F vs 30J is pretty big difference.

Actually besides Jeddah, GA just annoucne that the 300Er's will delay their ops to London now due to CGK's runway not having the capacity to hold a fully loaded 300ER at 351 tons. Its capacity is only 329 tons.

I have read almost all your Trip Reports and they are always very well written with lots of very nice pictures (especially those with private jets). This one on GA is another example of your great Trip Reports.

I would like to point out, however, that what you had experienced on your flight was not a trial run for F meal services but a trial run for the new C meal services by GA. I believe the letter from Mr. Satar (the CEO) from your picture above which had accompanied the menu also mentioned about the new Business Class meal service.

As far as I know, this is exactly the same new C meal service, including the same wine and beverage list, that GA has rolled out with the introduction of its 77W since late July. I understand the plan is to gradually roll this out network wide on all its medium to long haul widebodies services within the next several months.

Besides this new meal service, the new C service also sees an upgrade to a duvet and a new L'Occitane amenity kit.

Cool, thanks for the update. But unfortunately like I mentioned the new meal service if implemented in J was painfully slow. Almost 2 hours from start till finish. SO they really have to speed up on this process.

Let's hope they will continue to get good at it. When the current C meal service was first trailed in April 2011, it was also very slow. I remembered on the trial fight to HKG when the cabin crew had to plate the food and it almost took 1 1/2 hours for them to finish the meal service. However, 3 months later when they rolled out the new meal service, the service was very quick.

With new champagne, new wines selection with more choices than before, sake, new tablewares, new menu consisting of Indonesian, Western, and Japanese set course (For Jeddah flight, the Japanese set course is replaced with the Middle Eastern set course) , this new meal service for C is very impressive indeed. Now, I am curious to see what the F meal service is going to be like.
