Hello and welcome
to a couple of pictures and a shorty new story

„Farewell to Carpatair´s Saab 2000“

The trip in one word:

VALEDICTION

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/RO1301/RO1301010_zps51bbeb30.jpg

This is the story about a farewell trip on
Carpatair, ok the company is still around,
but to it´s long history of Saab 2000 operations,
ok this type is gone from the fleet by now.

Bună ziua, dragi cititori,

or sometimes also:

Hello, dear readers,

it´s not that long ago since there are rumours about a complete strategy change by Carpatair. What mean´s the return of all the Saab 2000´s and the focus on Jet´s on direct routes.
Now that´s reason enough with the Carpatair Saab as a everyday sign to my homebase airport and to catch a flight or two as soon as possible like this way:

http://www.gcmap.com/map?P=str-tsr-str&MS=wls&MR=120&MX=540x540&PM=*

Thanx to, as usual:

http://www.gcmap.com/

And of course, a new departure airport is good to count with no. 243 on the map:

Departure Airports II auf einer größeren Karte anzeigen

Here is the actual Tripreporter 2013 data:

TRIPREPORTER 2013 auf einer größeren Karte anzeigen

The previous 200 departure places:

Departure airports auf einer größeren Karte anzeigen

And therefore just less than six hours after reaching the homebase from:

„Meeting At Mozart´s Place, Or Not?“ (by FLIEGER67 Jul 31 2013 in Trip Reports)

I´am on the road again.

Service V3 0320 operated by Carpatair
Scheduled: 09.30 // 12.30

06.00 am is set on the cellphone alarm, what looks like early enough for the mid morning departure. It works well,
acceptable traffic on the road and the car found a reliable place at P0 to spend the day.
No OLCI here, a good excuse to visit the counters at STR airport, isn´t it?.
There are some Leu left from my latest visit to Romania, no need to catch some extra cash today.
Cancelled, but thankfully not Carpatair from gate 122
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/RO1301/RO1301001_zps28251524.jpg
Expedia.de handled the ticket this time, the fare together with the return service is 100.00 Euro´s per leg. Not that really cheap, but any time worth it.
Just a minute or two at the counter with, so it looks like mostly locals, but not the STR locals, on the way for Romania today!.
The nice young woman secured me two A seats and printed also the boarding pass for the second leg today, well done.
Just a couple of minutes at security and onward for the Lounge. The STR airport example this time
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/RO1301/RO1301002_zpsf403ca9e.jpg
Sure ok, but the apron view is definitely missing.
Down for the gates close to boarding time, not a minute at passport check
and good for a ride around the tarmac till this one with the cute engine
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/RO1301/RO1301004_zps59c05832.jpg

Yeah, YR-SBJ is the scheduled Saab 2000.
New to the log, leg no. 4 only on type till now and this is another example of the no-name planes fleet!.
Also the nose looks like really cute.
First in service with Crossair from 30.06.1995, later on with Swiss International and finally Carpatair till just a couple of days after this experience and stored till now like the complete Saab 2000 fleet.
There are two incidents to show:

Also the blue sky fits perfectly, isn´t it?.
Boarding Carpatair for the very first time
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/RO1301/RO1301009_zps0b1b05a0.jpg
Cockpit crew is from Romania. The captain with a nice welcome after boarding on the ground.
It´s 09.35 am, short after schedule, when we leave the homebase.
12 degrees and perfect clear sky just by surprise.
1.00 hours, 55 minutes on the go by „Carpatair“.
A really well loaded cabin today,
100%, no open seat to spot and I don´t noticed someone else non romanian beside me

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/RO1301/RO1301018_zpsa0d713a0.jpg
Superb views along the way.
The captain is on the mike again with really detailed infos inflight in a proactive style.
Routing is Augsburg-MUC-SZG-LNZ-VIE-Lake Balaton at maximum 31000 feet.
And later on with a supernice Bye-Bye from the captain, „See you soon on Carpatair“.

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/RO1301/RO1301025_zps3c4a1dc2.jpg
It is 11.30 am in Germany and 12.30 local, the sky is partly cloudy and the temperature is 24 degrees.
Bye now for YR-SBJ with just a few clouds around

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/RO1301/RO1301029_zps6f09ef20.jpg
By bus to the terminal, also with some meters only.
Just a couple of minutes at immigration and out in the public.
The airport is really well connected by public transport, at least when you see the world from a taxistas point of view!.
You should walk along the terminal around the corner for the busstop where, is it only me or is this simply the standard in such situations?, the bus drives down the road exactly when I´am turning around these aforementioned corner.
Well, I know that my arrival and the bus departure is tight, but just a minute or two delay should be possible with the bus?. No, it run´s perfectly ontime and the bus schedule is mainly fixed for the people working around the airport, some two hours till the next departure.
Ok, joining one of the relaxed taxistas, you know the guy´s with the pilot style sunglasses and the big grin, there is another victim on approach!.
A couple of minutes later and some Leu lighter I´am at the Piata Unirii in the center of Timisoara. Immediatelly welcomed by one of the local beggars who explained me in perfect english that he want´s some money.
So sad that I dont speak english at all and therefore the planned visit to the Domul Romano Catolic Sfantul Gheorghe right now seems like a good idea untill he has found another victim.
It seems this is the victim story!.
Nice historic buildings around,
more or less refurbished

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/RO1301/RO1301042_zps266f3962.jpg
It´s pretty warm here, not to say hot, therefore the decision is swiftly done to head back for the airport again.
Checking the bus schedule at the station, only to see that there is nothing fitting around and therefore I surrender the
taxista´s again and you know, this way is much cheaper than the earlier ride from the airport!.

Service V3 0319 operated by Carpatair
Scheduled: 17.35 // 18.45

This is the new place to count on the departure airports map
and the climatization works well
inside
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/RO1301/RO1301044_zpsb0ef8d14.jpg
And what´s on the screen?.
DUS cancelled, but nothing new for STR from gate 6 in the end
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/RO1301/RO1301043_zps2adaedca.jpg
Just a couple of minutes to wait at security and ready for a view to the apron.
Sisterships
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/RO1301/RO1301046_zps28e2c39b.jpg
There is also a Lounge on offer here. The Sky Biz with a less interested to say the least, young woman on duty.
Much more annoying is a group of biz travellers, Germany/Austria of course, with a loud discussion around and also the need to enjoy the non existent no smoking rule in Romania, disgusting
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/RO1301/RO1301047_zps2b90933f.jpg
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/RO1301/RO1301048_zps11e72342.jpg
Therefore time now to restock my bag and leave this place again for another view to the well used apron

Any idea about the close relationship between Italia and Romania?.
Just by surprise I meet a young woman working at an italian restaurant where I´ve been some times lately.
And believe me, I´am close, no I´am sure like nothing else that she is italian.
No way, she is from Romania and visited her relatives here.
And she told me also that most of the „italian“ staff at the restaurant is also romanian!.
Well, something new for me on the apron?

and yes, it is new with YR-SBD
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/RO1301/RO1301055_zpse868e119.jpg
Leg no. 5 on type, the fleet of no-name planes is growing!.
A really special plane, by the time of this flight it was the oldest Saab 2000 in service.
Working as a Saab demonstration plane from 17.03.1993, further to Crossair, Swiss International and Carpatair and also stored a couple of days after my flight.
There are no incidents to report

A technician worked at the FO´s cockpit window, but it seems nothing serious in the end.
5.45 pm, ten minutes late, 1.00 hour, 45 minutes by Carpatair right now. 28 sunny degrees in Timisoara.
Just departed from „One-One“ like arrivals
with the airport and nothing much else around

Cabin crew is one young female FA, younger, slim, large, black hair
ponytail, really nice and also professional.
Cockpit crew is from Romania according to the names, no comment at all, now that´s a difference to the earlier flight.
Neither route nor flightlevel info this way.
Ok, this is Carpatair
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/RO1301/RO1301063_zps7f4bd215.jpg

at 17A, one for me again, with the dark blue, really well used leather seats

Approach for STR
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/RO1301/RO1301073_zpse7c91855.jpg
Touchdown at „Two-Five“,
6.25 pm, impressive 20 minutes ahead to schedule, just by surprise 22 degrees and a few clouds only here at the homebase.
Sure a nice ride by Carpatair,
bye now for YR-SBD
and the S2000 around the Carpatair fleet at all

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/RO1301/RO1301076_zps96a57889.jpg
Some minutes at immigration without any question for me and that´s mostly not the case for the Romanian pax.
The car is where it should be and back at the homebase not that long thereafter.

Conclusions?. Sure!:
1.)Carpatair STR-TSR: A comfy welcome to Romania.
2.)Carpatair TSR-STR: Calm and nice cabin crew.

What´s going on further?.
A couple days off and a new country at the horizon,
Georgia, sounds interesting, isn´t it?:

Hi Markus,

good to hear about your Carpatair experience. I also flew on YR-SBJ, on the TSR-OTP sector, though. It seems catering had already been reduced since my trip. It's very sad to see how the airline has developed.

Hola Mrakus!

For the first time you deceived me man.... Same route, same day return, at least you keep our healthy Sunday tradition of reading a new report of yours... hehehehehehe

Carpatair has an interesting name and certainly, until recently it seems, some interesting aircraft, pity toi see those Saabs go away... Darwin airlines has still some on the ZRH-LUG route, the way to go to catch them.

They seem to deliver an OK product but not very consistent; flightdeck info was certainly not the same on both routes, I wish airlines keep a consistent policy on those, but it seems it is left to the pilot's discretion.

Timisoara, an interesting city, pretty much forgotten and closed to the general audience. Thanks for your pictures!

Salut!

Roger

Hi Markus,

Nice report on the now defunct Saab 2000s from Carpatair. Luckily for me, Darwin Airlines has a huge base in Geneva and lots of Saab 2000s, so I have two trips (to and through) PRG on these nice airliners.

It does seem that KRP consistently became worse and worse as far as menu options go... Shame to see that. Also, they used to have 2 F/As in their Saab 2000s. In some cases, even 3 of them.

And don't I know about TSR and taxistas--I also missed the bus when I was there and no other one for two hours--not to mention having to pay I think 40 lei to the center... more than the BlueAir ticket to Timisoara at that time (well, almost). Luckily I caught the no. 6 bus going back to the airport.

Anyway, interesting about the beggar speaking perfect English. Guess he'd just returned from a begging stint in London.

Cheers and thanks for your Sunday morning report!

Alex

Nice report on the now defunct Saab 2000s from Carpatair. Luckily for me, Darwin Airlines has a huge base in Geneva and lots of Saab 2000s, so I have two trips (to and through) PRG on these nice airliners.

Thank you and that´s good to know.

Quoting dc9northwest (Reply 5):

It does seem that KRP consistently became worse and worse as far as menu options go... Shame to see that. Also, they used to have 2 F/As in their Saab 2000s. In some cases, even 3 of them.

So the former good days are definitely gone with the company.

Quoting dc9northwest (Reply 5):
And don't I know about TSR and taxistas--I also missed the bus when I was there and no other one for two hours--not to mention having to pay I think 40 lei to the center... more than the BlueAir ticket to Timisoara at that time (well, almost). Luckily I caught the no. 6 bus going back to the airport.

Exactly my impression.

Quoting dc9northwest (Reply 5):
Anyway, interesting about the beggar speaking perfect English. Guess he'd just returned from a begging stint in London.

He was well trained!.

Thanks for sharing your latest report. It was for sure a great read.
Nice to see your farewell to the Carpatair Saab, an aircraft type still in need to log.

Hi Markus,

thanks for this great report!

Expedia.de handled the ticket this time, the fare together with the return service is 100.00 Euro´s per leg. Not that really cheap, but any time worth it.

I think it's actually pretty ok and less than i.e. LH wants for their cheapest european destianations return tickets.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Just a couple of minutes at security and onward for the Lounge. The STR airport example this time

This lounge is funny   It's actually that big as in the picture, you need a code to enter, which you get either at the ticketing office or at some shop airside, and usually there is no one there, at least on weekends. Once I spend a whole afternoon there waiting for a flight and watched sitcoms on provided TVs. The food selection is very limited. It seems that on weekdays the lounge gets a "doorlady" though manning the "room".

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
The airport is really well connected by public transport, at least when you see the world from a taxistas point of view!.
You should walk along the terminal around the corner for the busstop where, is it only me or is this simply the standard in such situations?, the bus drives down the road exactly when I´am turning around these aforementioned corner.

This makes me rememeber on time I flew to TSR with Wizzair from DTM. I arrived and thought I would let everyone leave firsdt on the "agrressive" taxis and then the remaining taxi drivers will for sure be happy to give the cheapest fare possible to get the "last" passenger coming later. This works quite well at some airports, but not at TSR. There were just no taxis left, not a bus running. I planned to go straight ahead to Serbia believing there were busses, but actually there were none, just a train which takes 4 hours or so for the few kilometers to BEG running the next morning, so I booked a last minute rate at a nice Best Westen (which was really really strange inside, like some kind of castle with too much funky things in the room, like strange colors and mirrors   ) and had a nice dinner at a pizza place. That's what I remember from Timisoara
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Reply 1):
There is also a Lounge on offer here. The Sky Biz with a less interested to say the least, young woman on duty.
Much more annoying is a group of biz travellers, Germany/Austria of course, with a loud discussion around and also the need to enjoy the non existent no smoking rule in Romania, disgusting

Nice views at least., but probably not much going on there... Did a balloon crash over the food/refreshment area?

Exactly my impression, no on there beside me, the lady securing the door and an american guy in trouble to find a working Wifi net. I helped him out with the LH Lounge net code, what works also well here!.

it´s not that long ago since there are rumours about a complete strategy change by Carpatair. What mean´s the return of all the Saab 2000´s and the focus on Jet´s on direct routes.

Any idea what is going on? I really can't understand all these fleet changes...
First, a/c were laid off to a single F100 fleet (even the B737 YR-ADB)- but now the management is buying again (an even older) Boeing B737 YR-BBA.

Hi Markus,

That was a very busy week, well, month, of flying you had in May!

The Saab does indeed look rather cute in the Carpatair colours, I think most of the Saabs flying around Europe must have been with Crossair at some point.

Timisoara is surprisingly attractive, especially with all the colourful buildings.

I’ve almost forgotten what it’s like to visit somewhere where there isn’t a smoking ban indoors. I couldn’t possibly walk into a smoke filled restaurant anymore….

Quite surprising to see a lounge on offer at Timisoara although what kind of a ceiling is that they have? As reifel says it does indeed look like a hot air balloon that crash landed!

Happy flying

Hello FLIEGER67,

A nice farewell salute to the Carpatair S2000 fleet. So are they closing the STR-TSR route as well or will they be using another plane type? The loads look quite decent though? It’s funny to see that nearly every S2000 flying in Europe still today has served it’s time at Crossair!
A bit surprised to see a lounge in TSR and that ceiling must certainly been a Romanian design

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
For sure a really nice plane

I completely agree.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
and you know, this way is much cheaper than the earlier ride from the airport!

Hi Markus,

seems like I have missed a couple of your reports lately, you write faster than I can read them

Anyway I really enjoyed this one, good to catch a couple of flights on these cute Saabs before they are gone. Carpatair certainly looks like a decent airline. Also interesting pictures of Timisoara, for sure a nice city (even though the taxi drivers seems to know their job there as well). I would really want to visit this town as well some day, as it is one of the partner towns of Karlsruhe.

Nice report Markus. Looks like you had some nice flights. I flew into TSR on my first trip to Romania back in 2003, and remember seeing all those Saabs around, and thinking that it'd be nice to try out Carpatair.

The lounges you used were very odd looking. The STR one looked like someones living room, the TSR one looked like a bouncy castle was deflating over it. Strange!
