GETTING TO THE AIRPORT

Check-out for the day rooms at the Narita Hilton is at 18:00, which gives me about two and a half hours to take a shower and have a rest – and watch the planes. I’m fortunate enough to have a room on the top floor overlooking the approach to runway 16R.

At 18:15 the shuttle pulls up outside to take me back to Narita’s Terminal 2 for the flight to Sydney. The photos really don’t do the bus justice, but the interior is brilliant and very seventies, complete with chandeliers and draped blue curtains. The journey takes about 15 minutes to complete.

CHECK-IN

Check-in is done by JAL for Qantas in Narita. And tonight it’s unusually chaotic, particularly given that this is Japan, where normally everything works like clockwork.

I am assigned seat 11B, an aisle seat on the first row of the upper deck. The flight is not full though and once we’re airborne and the seatbelt sign is turned off, I move across to 11K and have the whole row of two to myself.

THE LOUNGE

Qantas operates its own lounge in Tokyo, which is located on the second floor of the satellite concourse of Terminal 2 adjacent to 82, from where my flight will be leaving tonight. The lounge offers some great views of the aircraft. Unfortunately though, being dark I’m unable to take any decent pictures.

The food selection in the lounge is good, with a combination of Asian and Western dishes and the ubiquitous soft drinks machines.

Boarding for the 20:30 departure already starts at 19:55. By the looks of it it’s not going to be a full flight tonight.

THE CABIN

The cabin is much nicer than I expected it would be from the pictures I found on the net, and Qantas has obviously put a lot of thought into providing sufficient storage space in the cabin on the upper deck.

SERVICE

As soon as I take my seat, one of the flight attendants comes to welcome me to the flight and asks me if there’s anything I’d like to drink. As usual it’s an orange juice for me.

The seat is equipped with a small bottle of Vittel mineral water, earphones, a thin cover for the seat and a blanket. Before we push back, one of the crew brings me a vanity kit and the famous grey Qantas pyjamas.

Seriously, who on earth designed these things? I am given a size L/XL. I change in the toilet and can only pray that the lights have already been dimmed by the time I come out again so as not to make a spectacle of myself. The pants are rather tight, to say the least...

By the way, what’s missing is some sort of inflight magazine. Do they actually have one?

THE MEAL

The meal begins with the drinks orders. I’m having another Ginger Ale. This stuff is starting to grow on me. No peanuts or anything of the sort are served with the drink.

The entire meal service takes an eternity to complete, for no apparent reason. It also strikes me that although the crew are really quite personable and friendly, the whole experience seems somehow a bit soulless. The composition of the menu for instance seems haphazard and the portion of the dishes is somewhat variable.

For a starter there is a choice of Miso soup with shitake mushroom and wakame. The other choice is smoked duck salad. The table is set up with a tablecloth, followed by a side plate which contains the cutlery, salt and pepper, butter and a side salad. The salad is minute and even the flight attendant comments that it’ll be hard trying to make that last for more than two mouthfuls.

There is only one bread round and judging by the content of the basket, a second round is not envisaged.

For the main I have the Gnocchi with a tomato sauce and grilled pumpkin and sautéed leeks. I must say, this tastes very good, the portion is decently sized and the meal is still hot when it arrives at my seat.

It takes the crew quite a while to come to remove my dish. Actually I suspect they may have forgotten about me. The flight attendant is eager to make amends though and asks me if I’ll be having dessert, which he brings me straight away. And this really is divine: chocolate and caramel tart in a short crust pastry with a dollop of crème fraîche. Lovely!

Ninety minutes before we land the mood lights go on again and feign a sunrise at lighting speed.

The breakfast service begins. Again I am struck by the somewhat odd combination of things on offer. Fresh fruit in passion fruit juice with a dollop of yoghurt, orange juice, filter coffee and a salmon onigiri. Don’t get me wrong, I like onigiri, especially the salmon ones. But it just seems like a strange thing to serve on a breakfast flight.

ARRIVAL

Once the meal is done, I start packing all my belonging that I have managed to spread around all over the place during the flight.

The approach into Sydney is truly spectacular and brings us in right above the city. We head out towards the open sea, passing Bondi Beach on the left hand side, before doing a wide right turn to line up for landing.

Fortunately I have an express card for immigration from Qantas, which should save me some time. You see, I have a connection from the domestic terminal. You didn’t seriously think I’d be done after only three flights, did you?

Yes, "The Australian Way". There was one in my seat pocket when I flew NRT-SYD (W) in July. Wonder why yours was missing. Perhaps hidden in a compartment in your seat?

I believe Onigiri is actually a common Japanese breakfast. My Japanese friend says her family eats it like toast.

Yep! You can also tell by the PTVs being in the armrest, rather than the seat back.

From what I've heard, the crew don't seem to quite "get it", and are still offering it as an entre-main standard meal combination, even though the menu states that you can order anything you like at any time. I guess it is much easier for them to manage this way!

Good to read about Qantus' J product on a long-range flight. Interesting that their meal service seems a bit all over the place, and strange that don't get anything to snack on during the drink service!

Sounds like you've done a lot of flying. Two long-range flights in a short span of time. I love all things airlines, and flying, but man, you have some abilty to sit still and patient for all those hours!

The Qantas magazine is called "The Australian Way" and imho is one of the more interesting and engaging in-flight magazines I've come across. The magazine - along with the safety card, inflight wine guide and sick bag can be a bit tricky to find in the skybed seats. I can actually see them in a couple of your photos though

I noticed the same things on the flight home from CGK a few weeks back. CGK-SYD was an overnighter, and due to the flight being 6-7 hours total, the menu consisted of "Supper Plates" - I assume this is to maximize rest, and due to holiday-season delays in pushback, orders were taken on the ground, so I would have thought service would have been relatively quick. The opposite. The initial setting tables was quick, and no sooner had some customers up front had their table set, they were being service their supper plate, and I thought, "great, I'll wolf this down and sleep". The reality was the opposite - it took up to 80 minutes for all of us to receive our plates, with some people finishing before some even getting their meals.

While the crew did their jobs, there was a overall lack of enthusiasm about the whole thing. I was trying to think of a good description when I was writing my own report, but you've pretty much nailed it.

Same thing on the SYD-CGK flight. I noticed the large and small plates concept on the Menu - but was simply asked what I'd like for entrée and what I'd like for main. No one asked for anything substantial later on during the flight - so I can't comment of the "anytime" concept. Personally, I would have thought the "plates" concept would be a nightmare, logistically, and perhaps may account for why their meal service took so long?

Yes, definitely horizontal in bed mode. A bit tricky to get out of though, but still very comfy.

I kind of like the general idea of simply having snacks any time during the flight, rather than a full three course meal with the rest of the mob. But as you say, the crew are definitely struggling with it, to say the least. The gentleman on the other side of the aisle received his main dish when I hadn't even had the soup yet.

I'm not sure if they don't get it or if the passengers don't and it's too complicated to have to explain it to everybody individually. I think most passengers just expect to get on the plane, have a meal and then go to sleep. It's what they're used to.

That's what surprised me the most. I would have thought they'd send those birds on the really long routes instead. Still, I'm not complaining.

That is something I'm still trying to figure out. My initial thought was, they're trying to save money. But if that were the case, how about abolishing the pjs first?

Hm, I found the storage area eventually and there was a sick bag and the safety card in it. But no magazine. I thought maybe they'd abolished the magazine to save money.

I suspect that one reason why it took so long was that there was no dedicated crew for the upper deck. So the same crew would first serve downstairs and then come upstairs. At least that's my only explanation why it should have taken so long.

There are two stowages in the Skybed for printed materials; the one you mention is located in the base of the armrest, the second (where the magazine is located) is behind your arm on the outer side of each seat.

I absolutely love the tacky interior of the bus to NRT, so great they keep this 70s look on those transfers.

Great you could fly on the upper deck of the B747, something I have never done.

The capsule seats on QF do not look very elegant but I am sure they are comfortable; the food though looks a litlle bit on the down side, they should work better on that.

Being able to see all those great views of Sydney on arrival with the morning sun would have made my day.

Thanks! I was rather surprised to see that standing at the gate. As far as I know it should have been one of the -400s with RR engines.

Alas, I don't think a B747-8 order is going to happen for Qantas. They have the A 380 for the heavy duty stuff. And I guess now that they're working closer with EK the -8 becomes even more unlikely. By the way, didn't Korean Air order the passenger version of the -8?

There wasn't a constant air stream. But when I took my original seat the air vent was on. As I turned it off, the gentleman sitting next to me did say that his got stronger. As for KLM, I think the cabin of their B747-400s was getting a bit long in the tooth because they knew that they'd be revamping them soon. I'm dying to try out the new KL C class seat.

Something you must do before it's too late. It's very different to the upper deck of the A 380 and a lot more intimate.

The seat is very comfy, but it really makes the cabin seem gloomy.

That really was one of the highlights of the day. Initially I thought I'd be sitting on the wrong side for a straight in approach, but when he banked left to go passed the city I could hardly believe my luck. Sydney is such a lovely place. One of the few cities I could actually imagine living in.

Another nice episode. After the wonderful BA flight, this Qantas one looks like a fading star. Or was it not it that bad? I do like the egg-like seatback design, very modern.

Lovely! That reminds me a bit of a movie called ‘My big fat Greek wedding’ in which this bus wouldn’t misstand. Was it a hotel courtesy bus?

Interesting you should say that. throughout the flight on Qantas I kept asking myself whether the service was really so-so or if I was simply comparing them the the previous flight in First. I suspect the answer, as usual, lies somewhere in between.

Well, I thought they looked harmless enough too. As you say, more like a trainer. But how wrong I was! I think if the lights hadn't been dimmed, I wouldn't have dared come out of the toilet once I'd changed into the pjs.

Thanks for this series of reports thus far, it's been an interesting read.

As I just flew QF from coast-to-coast the onboard service was similar to this flight as they try to step it up on the MEL-PER and SYD-PER routes.

No peanuts or anything of the sort are served with the drink.

Seems to be an omission as domestically nuts and pretzels were served.

This wouldn't be a reference to the QF flight delayed out of LAX last year, after a pair of pax in First refused to travel without the right size PJ's and then demanded to be let off the flight once ascertained that no more PJ's said pax's requested size were available, would it?

Well, the design of the vanity kit is alright. I thought the content was weirder to be honest. Apart from the socks, earplugs, toothbrush and shades for the eyes - which are all pretty standard - there was also this box with three half empty miniature tubes of creams.

QF J here looks quite ok, although the food doesn't look that nice! How was the seat? Comfortable? Were you able to get some nice sleep?

The seat really doesn't look like much but it was quite comfortable. It's more or less horizontal, so no sliding down like on Lufthansa's old C Class seat. And the seat cover they give you makes a lot of difference, even though it is quite thin.
