Picking up almost immediately where the last part left off, outside Muttrah Souk, It was now time to head back to Muscat international. If you missed the previous part, or indeed any of the others in this series, you can catch up here:

Arabia & Thailand 2013 3: BKK-DXB-MCT With EK/WY (by jwhite9185 Aug 6 2013 in Trip Reports)

So I made my way to the taxi rank and agreed a price of 10 Rials - once they had finished lunch. It was a little uncomfortable being left in a car that wasn’t moving, without any windows open in 41 degree heat but once the drivers had sorted out who was taking me and finished the last few bites of their sandwich we were off.

The taxi driver was good enough to throw in a brief tour of the other sights around Muscat too, so there was a bit of a detour along the way - I had plenty of time according to the driver, so was quite glad of this bonus tour. He was actually quite a friendly guy, showing me a photo album he had of the various sites of the Muscat area, giving me a bit of overview to the history and the future of the area and telling me about his family. Turns out he actually had family in England too – although I generally find most people do once you tell them where you’re from…

.

.

.

.
Glad I got to see this – I’d seen pictures before I left but looked a bit far out to reach.

Arrival at the airport was around thirty minutes later. Almost immediately as you enter, there's a security check.

It was then around to the Oman air check in to grab my boarding pass.

.

.

.
WY even have good looking boarding passes!

As there didn't seem to be a huge amount landside, especially after all the security checks, I headed through to passport control and was stamped out of the country. Then it was yet another security check – the third by my count. As usual, it was in to a duty free shop almost immediately.

.

There were also a few windows around to see what was around.

.

After this it was a bit of a wander, however this airport is a world away from DXB!

.

But for how long?

I then made my way downstairs to gate 17, although it wasn't actually open. So I just sat and waited in a pretty dreary looking basement.

The gate was opened a few moments later, and I entered the holding pen, seeing something familiar along the way.

.

In the distance I could see the scheduled E175 being prepared to head over to DXB.

.
Guess they weren’t expecting a jet of this size when they built this hangar.

Boarding was called at 16:35, although there wasn't a bus straight away. So why call for barding?! After a minute or two, one turned up and we made our way over to A40-EB, one of the only jets on this side of the terminal.

.

WY613
MCT-DXB
9th May 2013
Embraer E175 / A4O-EB
Seat: 18A / Economy
Scheduled: 17:20 / 18:20
Off Stand: 17:08
On Stand: 18:12

Once onboard, I was amazed to see seat back TV screens - on a regional jet?! In fact the cabin was pretty clean and modern in general with a colourful scheme, yet still managing to remain subtle in the process. Much better than the Dark leather of the European carriers.

.

.

.

Legroom was sufficient too.

.

There were also pillows on each seat. Again, a nice touch on such a short hop. I remember flying with BD many years ago and my mum asked for one as she had a bad back – and was told they don’t even carry them on such short flights.

.

.
One of the increasing number of airlines that are doing away with no smoking signs. Although nobody paid any attention.

The American captain came over the PA and announced a flying time of 48 minutes and a cruising altitude of 20,000ft.

The engines were started and pushback came at 17:08 - or should I say we pulled away from stand, and made the taxi out to the runway, quite a few minutes ahead of schedule. We passed some interesting things along the way.

.

.

.

.

.

Upon reaching the end of the runway, there was a wait for a few moments for our sister ship to land.

.

We took off into the haze at just before 17:20.

.

.

.
Passing the future MCT.

.

Around ten minutes after departure the service began, although this time there was a choice of chicken or cheese wrap. I opted for the chicken. It was pretty similar to what was on offer on the outbound flight.

.

.

After this it was going between the skymap and the window until descent started at just after 17:45.

.

.

.

.

.

As had been the case every time I had flown into DXB this week, it was pretty hazy and murky.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Touchdown was at around 18:05 and we made the long taxi over to terminal 1.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Once on stand, there was a bit of a wait to disembark. Once out the door, it was through to passport control. This was much quicker than over in T3 and I was stamped into Dubai for the third time in five days.

Not a bad looking C Class

.

.

.
I got slightly shouted at for taking this picture. That’s about as far as it went though.

It was then up to the metro and on to Deira City Centre for some dinner and a bit of a look around. I was taken back at how many decent sized shopping centers there were around.

.

.

.

.
I got yet another stare when I took this picture.

.

This was great! I’ve since managed to hunt one down in the UK.

As I hadn't seen much of the area around my hotel, I decided to take the 30-minute walk back.

The following morning I woke up pretty late for me - around 9AM. I took my time getting ready, as the metro doesn't start until around 13:00 on a Friday. I took another walk around the local area.

.
I like how traditional and modern mix here.

Unhealthy – but good – breakfast.

.

.

.
Watching the departures from DXB. Shame my camera was still playing up.

After spending an hour or so walking around, it got a little hot for my liking so I headed back to the hotel to cool off for an hour or so before heading back out again. Once the metro had opened, I went out to the Dubai mall and the Burj Khalifa

.

.

.

.

First impressions of this impressive mall.

.

Unfortunately, all the tickets for the Burj Kahlifa had sold out. Which was a little annoying as that was the one thing I wanted to do on this trip. Guess that'll teach me for not booking in advance – something that I nearly always do. Typical that the one time I don’t do it, I get bitten!

So, after looking through the tat in the gift shop, about as close as I could get was having a walk around the base outside. I was in awe at just how tall this building was – one of the most impressive sights I’ve ever seen.

.

.

.

.
Hot brakes?

.

.
Wow.

After a good while wandering around – and mostly staring up, I headed back inside.

.
More tradition, among the multinational brands.

At least I got to see one of Dubai’s wonders close up.

.

.

Continuing my self guided tour.

.

After a tiring few hours I headed back to the hotel for the night, via a packed metro and that's where I'll leave this part.

Stay tuned for the final part of this series that will tell the story of my final day of this trip and my flight home to London.

Thanks for sharing. Oman Air seems great. Love the E-Jets. AC also have some with personal seatback screens.

I was in MCT airport some 6 months or so ago. I arrived late at night with BA from AUH and departed late night around midnight with LX to DXB. Both carriers had nothing on offer on the short hops other than something to drink, so the WY service was actually pretty good. MCT airport is oldfashioned, but at day it looks defnitely nicer than by night. Also I can't remember the nice glass walls and wooden gate counters. I do really not recall them. Maybe this is new?

Regarding Dubai, I never realized the Metro was not working on Friday mornings. Is that really so? I wouldn't have expected that in Dubai. The Burj Dubai I also tried to book tickets 2 day ahead. Could take the 4.30 (AM!!!) slot, as this was the only one left. Gladly skipped and next time I will book ahead as well.

Hello James

Another great report, thanks for sharing it with us!
Oman looks to be good, always nice to see PTVs in the Embrears.
I like the MCT and DXB pics as well, too bad you did not get in Burj Khalifa.

They were pretty good - I can see them becoming a challenger to Emirates/Etihad/Qatar in the next few years once the new airport opens

Quoting reifel (Reply 3):
AC also have some with personal seatback screens.

Yeah I found that out afterwards. Big surprise when I boarded though.

I guess its just your typical European shorthaul sector to them.

Cant comment - would seem odd to be refurbish the current airport when they have a new one under construction.

Quoting reifel (Reply 3):
Regarding Dubai, I never realized the Metro was not working on Friday mornings.

I think Friday in Dubai is like Sunday in Europe - only a few of the bigger chain shops were open and there didn't seem to be many people around in the streets either..

They did have a ticket left at around midnight, but didnt fancy hanging around for that long.

What I don't like to see are these air ventilation slots which cannot be closed...one reason why I started to dislike the E-Jets.

Hi James

Thanks for the interesting report and the lovely pictures of Mutrah and your flight with Oman Air. Oman Air is certainly a nifty little airline. I particularly like the picture of the A330 stuck in that minute hangar. I saw something similar in Saigon, with a Vietnam Airlines B777 squeezed into what looked like a garden shed in comparison!

It looks as though they're making progress with the new terminal. I just hope the new facility will feature some of the design elements of the of the current one with those elegant patters everywhere.

And I must say I think you're very brave to go out and about taking during the day for some sightseeing! It's a pity the tickets to visit the tower were already sold out. I guess you're just going to have to go back to Dubai some day!

Thanks for posting.

Cheers,

Ridiculous. It is like when buses run on a reduced service on a Sunday in the UK. Grrr

Yeah, there wasn't anything wrong with the current terminal, other than it was just a little small. Also the gate area in the basement could have done with a bit more natural light.

Quoting knightsofmalta (Reply 7):

Hola James!

Oman air looks really nice, even their color scheme is one the best out there.

How nice of them offer such snack in a short hop to DXB, something I have not seen in a long time, great!

MCT and DOH seem have grown too fast to accomodate all the flights they handle, hope the new facilities are ready soon.

Thanks for the pics of futuristic Dubai, a place I have yet to visit, but I leave it for winter months.

Salut!

Yeah, on a similar length BA flight between LHR-ORY earlier in the year, all I was offered was a biscuit!

Yeah, I had heard DOH is a little manic. Luckily MCT wasn't too bad, although it could have been due to the fact it was a quiet time.

Yeah, I heard summer is pretty unbearable, although when I went (May), it wasn't too bad. It was a pretty comfortable heat in comparison to the stickiness of Thailand.

Great photos and report on Oman Air! I love your pictures from Dubai. What kind of camera do you use? The pictures too off the Oman Air winglet on the EMB are really nice too; what a striking livery!

Thanks for sharing!

Hey jwhite9185,

Excellent stuff again mate, really enjoyed it. You’re a brave man, surpassing the heat of the desert only to find the Burj being sold out, bummer...! Great show on Oman Air, that E-Jet looks almost like a BBJ, pillows and all, nice food and good looking in general. In my books: 2

Quoting jwhite9185 (Thread starter):
WY even have good looking boarding passes!

Now that is even an example that I would keep.

Quoting jwhite9185 (Thread starter):
and we made our way over to A40-EB

Strange to see this reg having 2 letters in the end iso 3 like usual.

Quoting jwhite9185 (Thread starter):
As had been the case every time I had flown into DXB this week, it was pretty hazy and murky.

It makes for some great photography with lovely colours though!

Quoting jwhite9185 (Thread starter):
I got slightly shouted at for taking this picture.

Did you use ‘the big one’ or ‘the pocket one’

Hi James, great stuff here  .

Brings me back to my short stopover in DXB back in January 2011, on my way back to BLR from LAX. How long were the lines at customs at DXB? I seem to recall waiting almost an hour and a half before i could be stamped in, then it took me some time to change money and deposit my carry on at the left luggage counter, before taking the Metro into town.

I also spent the few hours i had in town at the Dubai Mall. I never got yelled at for taking pictures though, wierd. The Mall is HUGE!!..i think it would probably take a whole day just to go through that place. I had a Shwarma for lunch, it was pretty good  . A fun fact, the Metro stop at the Dubai mall deposits you across the way from the Burj Khalifa (At that time it was still called the Burj Al Arab) and right into the sandtrap that makes up roadway medians and pedestrian spaces in Dubai. You got a lot closer to the building than i did though, but it was still amazing to see nonetheless. I also managed to travel on the public bus system ( a short hop to connect to the metro station from the Mall). I found it neat how its all was a smart ticket/card system. This report makes me nostalgic!, i really want to have another stopover in Dubai  .

Canon Eos550d with Sigma 18/250 lens.

Sultan - guess that seems appropriate here...

Thanks, and glad I could provide some entertainment.

It was actually pretty bearable. Much easier than Thailand thats for sure!

Euro carriers could learn a thing or two here.

Quoting Sultanils (Reply 15):
Now that is even an example that I would keep.

Yeah, just a shame they were one of the few carriers that ripped it in half!

Quoting Sultanils (Reply 15):

Even that wasn't the right reg - noticed after it was actually A4O-EB rather than A40-EB.

Quoting Sultanils (Reply 15):

True, but a blue sky with the sand would have looked better.

Quoting Sultanils (Reply 15):

I took that one on my phone.

CaliAtenza,

Hi James, great stuff here

Thank you,

Quoting CaliAtenza (Reply 16):
How long were the lines at customs at DXB?

In terminal 3, it took around 30 minutes to get through on both occasions. On this occasion, in terminal it was pretty quick - maybe around 5/10 minutes?

Quoting CaliAtenza (Reply 16):
I never got yelled at for taking pictures though, wierd.

I didn't get shouted at when I was out and about - only in the airport. I just got a few stares when I was in the mall.

Quoting CaliAtenza (Reply 16):
The Mall is HUGE!!..i think it would probably take a whole day just to go through that place.

I spent a good few hours there and didn't see it all.

Yeah I actually exited the metro and went for a walk along there rather then follow the signs straight away. Didn't seem much in the area other than a couple of small shops and a bus station.

Hi Philip,

Yeah - somehow I don't think the BE example I'll be on at the weekend will be quite as fancy though. In fact I know so, as I went on one last year!

Hi James !

Thanks for a great report with great pictures !

Very nice pictures from Muscat and it looks really nice! I should go there some time.

Great to see the Oman Air Force BAC 1-11s there!

The flight seem okay and it's very short anyway. The colors of the cabin match their livery but the pattern looks very 1970s to me.

Nice pictures from Dubai.

Looking forward to your next report !

I'd go sooner rather than later - I can see it getting like Dubai before long.

Yeah you don't see many of those around these days. I saw a few DC8's parked up at ARN last week - so you do get a few surprises now and again in unexpected places.

Hello James,

Very nice report with sightseeing pictures of Oman and Dubai! Love it as always!

Quoting jwhite9185 (Thread starter):
He was actually quite a friendly guy,

That’s good to hear!

Quoting jwhite9185 (Thread starter):
Then it was yet another security check – the third by my count.

The first before check-in, the third before the duty free area, but when was the second?

Quoting jwhite9185 (Thread starter):
Guess they weren’t expecting a jet of this size when they built this hangar.

The view is kinda cute, to be honest.

Quoting jwhite9185 (Reply 1):
Legroom was sufficient too.

I love how they incorporate the safety card pocket.

Quoting jwhite9185 (Reply 1):
or should I say we pulled away from stand

Nice.

Quoting jwhite9185 (Reply 1):
there was a choice of chicken or cheese wrap.

The wraps are apparently standard offer on intra-gulf flights.

Quoting jwhite9185 (Reply 1):
I got yet another stare when I took this picture.

Odd! Why? I am sure you were not the only one doing that.

Quoting jwhite9185 (Reply 2):
Unfortunately, all the tickets for the Burj Kahlifa had sold out.

Shame! You should better book the ticket in advance.

Thank you for sharing! It's great to experience Oman Air through your eyes.

Have a nice weekend,

That’s good to hear!

It was great to get a tour thrown in for free - I'd imagine most taxi drivers would want to drop you off as fast as possible so they could get their next fare in.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 25):
The first before check-in, the third before the duty free area, but when was the second?

As you walk through the door... or was that HKT? Or both? You've got me thinking now!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 25):
The view is kinda cute, to be honest.

Being used to seeing 3x 744's fit nicely into the hangars at LHR, seeing this was definitely something new!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 25):
I love how they incorporate the safety card pocket.

Yeah, not seen that before. Wonder why others haven't done this?

Quoting akhmad (Reply 25):
The wraps are apparently standard offer on intra-gulf flights.

More substantial than I got on my LCA-LHR sector of nearly 5 hours last year - although I guess there were exceptional circumstances there.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 25):
Odd! Why? I am sure you were not the only one doing that.

Who knows? Seems as though taking pictures of anything apart from the major tourist attractions out there gets a bit of a look.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 25):
Shame! You should better book the ticket in advance.

Yeah as I mentioned, thats something I nearly always do. Just on this occasion I figured I'd pay cash on the door.
