Aegean, Europe's best regional airline?

Background:

PART I:

October 2012, finally knowing what I will be doing professionally the next few years (without being strangled by government exams). To celebrate this I could not think about something better than booking myself another set of flights. After taking the Kuwait Airways A300-600 from Geneva to Frankfurt in June 2012 and the Singapore Airlines Boeing 777-300ER from Manchester to Munich I decided to book another fifth freedom flight and soon my eyes fell on another interesting route departing from Greece!
Brussels-Frankfurt! The Kuwait Way! (by MSS658 Dec 17 2012 in Trip Reports)
A 5 Star Meet In The Bavarian Heat! (by MSS658 May 2 2013 in Trip Reports)

Before booking that flight I had to find a way to get into Athens and back home from Munich. The most simple option would be a direct flight on Aegean and via Lufthansa back home. But wait?? Lufthansa charges about 609 EUR oneway from Munich to Brussels and flying to direct is boring as well. Another option from Brussels was SAS via Copenhagen. However, you don't know 5 months in advance how a brutal winter you might have, so rather safe than sorry I kept looking on and finally found a cheap fare from Dusseldorf to Athens on Aegean. The total costs would come out cheaper than anything out of Brussels. With Aegean being a new airline for me it was worth everything even with the equipment being the standard A320. My departure time was at 12.35 (which I did like in addition of a 6.15 departure in the winter) , so time enough to catch the ICE/Thalys to DUS. Dusseldorf is a new airport for me aswell.

Pre-departure:

As the months pass on we where soon in the bitter cold 2012/2013 winter on a February morning, I received an email inviting me to check in online for Aegean Airlines flight 841 to Athens. The plane did not look full at all at this point so I selected seat 27A in the back hoping the 3-seater would remain open. The weather did not look that good this sunday night, a line of snow would be passing in the early AM hours. Just around the time I would start my travel to Dusseldorf, hoping I would not have too much inconvenience I went to bed for just a few hours. My alarm clock went of at 3.30 the next morning, way to early an hour that only one person here on the board from the Stuttgart area can resist. There has been some snowfall but for the moment it stopped. By 4.20 I left home towards my local train station and parked the car there. After having a quick bite at a local breakfast place near the railway station I took the 5.30 train which thankfully was running ontime. At this time of the day there where already alot of commuters bound for Brussels. (Pic taken before the mass boarded)

.

Once in Brussels I had a very tight connection (7 minutes) to catch my ICE International train to Cologne. Everything went well here and at 6.25 sharp we departed towards Cologne. No I did not distribute any chocolate box here but I could get one of the best seats (in second class) on the ICE after the driver's seat (separated by a glass wall)

From here things started to go downhill, between Liege and the German border we where stuck for about 20 minutes due to signalization problems. Too make it even worse the bistro café car was inop so no chance on breakfast. First ray of daylight around Liege.

We arrived in Aachen with 25 minutes delay. Enough to make me miss my connecting ICE to Dusseldorf, however with quite a bit of spare time I wasn't worried. Here is the mini-cabin of our ICE destination Frankfurt.

However the seats are comfortable.

Once arrived in Köln there was another ICE bound for Amsterdam calling in Dusseldorf city, without thinking I boarded in the bistro car to get some breakfast.

Well the car was closed due to another technical problem with the train and it was going to be limited to Dusseldorf, at least I could get a wrapped croissant (keep in mind I've been almost 6 hours up and my stomach was in bad need for some food). And hot chocolate that was to hot too even look at.

Thumbs down on DB for this one here... knowing that under a bunch of Belgian railway enthiousasts here DB is considered as The Singapore airlines of the European rail network. However I did not find the grass any greener. Soon I arrived in Dusseldorf and made a mad dash to an immediate departing S-bahn train to the Airport. By 9.40 I arrived at the airport with still 3 hours to spare.

Leaving Dusseldorf International airport

As soon as I got off the train I found a kiosk providing check in for Airberlin, Lufthansa and some other carriers. Aegean was one of the carriers listed on the kiosk so I decided to print my boarding pass here.

After a short walk I was in the terminal. So far, so good for now for A3 841. Note there is another Aegean flight leaving to Thessaloniki just 30 minutes after us using A321 equipment.

I was quite impressed about the large and open design of the Dusseldorf airport, for one or other reason I always imagined it to be smaller.

Two Lufthansa 737 classics (D-ABIA and D-ABIW) waiting for their next mission.

Soon I passed through security into the B concourse. Unlike other Star Alliance carriers A3 uses the B concourse instead of the A concourse. However, I had some great views from the C concourse where A6-EFD was almost ready to leave to Abu Dhabi as EY 024.

Quite impressed about Lufthansa's operation here in Dusseldorf, spot the intruder here.

The Intruder in the last picture flew my second flight in 2012 from Stockholm Arlanda to Brussels after the Stockholm A.net meeting.
SAS, Stockholm And The A.net Meeting! (by MSS658 Jul 29 2012 in Trip Reports)

If you want to get to the gates you have to pass the duty free shop, Why do I dislike airports that do it this way...

When I arrived at gate B41 there was a huge crowd present. Not for my flight to Athens yet, but for Airberlin flight 9864 to Palma De Mallorca at 11.30. I did like the design of the jetway add, very efficient.

With an AB A321 attached to it.

D-ATUC, the DB logojet from Hapag Loyd. Quite funny since on my last trips in Germany (and Palma de Mallorca, which you could confuse for a German Airport) I have seen this plane in Stuttgart, Palma, Munich and now Dusseldorf, in a few days I'm in Frankfurt. Just wondering.... Today she would be operating X3 2274 to Jerez

Airberlin has quite an operation here as well, you would almost confuse Dusseldorf for Berlin here.

The Palma flight being pushed back. D-ABCI is bringing a full load of tourists that love to escape from the Cold western European winter.

Air France from Paris is present as well. F-HEPD after its arrival as AF 1606.

Iberia CRJ-1000 from Madrid as IB 8052.

.

Soon I learned that the B-concourse could be used for non-shengen flights as well. How come? well British Airways flight BA 938 from London Heathrow came in and stopped at the gate just beside us, the flight is operated by a former bmi aircraft as well registred G-MIDY in full British Airways livery.

Another Air Berlin arriving from somewhere in Europe.

A few moments later Aegean Airlines flight 840 from Athens landed on runway 5 just a few minutes after schedule. As planned an Airbus A320-200 was assigned to the Dusseldorf rotation today.

SX-DGD would operate the first flight of another well flown year.

Soon the passengers deboarded trough a different level than us, first time I had this happen on a shengen flight. Soon D-AIGS passed us as LH 408 to Newark

Followed by another A340-300 registred D-AIGU to Miami as Lufthansa 466.

.

Soon more and more passengers started showing up, when asking the gate agent if there were still free 3-seaters I got responded that the flight is fully booked and she could not do anything.

12.20 in Dusseldorf, 13.20 in Athens boarding started for Aegean flight 841.

I was greeted by a rather reserved flight attendant, However I did manage to get her to laugh once when trying to pull my classic entry joke. Soon I went towards seat 27A where another Chocolate box appeared where I was thanked for. I could describe the crew on this flight to be rather Business friendly. View of another AirBerlin 737 from my seat.

As soon as I settled myself I found the legroom to be pretty tight, as you can see.

Air Niki operating for Airberlin to Vienna as AB 8136.

Soon boarding was complete and thankfully the middle seat (despite hearing the opposite) stayed vacant. Soon the flight attendants came with a pre-departure mint. Good start!

Pushback commenced about 15 minutes behind schedule, soon the saftey demo started and we proceded to runway 5R for takeoff.

12.59 in Germany, 13.59 in Greece the engines of SX-DGD produced full thrust and our Airbus A320 was soon up in the cold German skies.

starting our Southeastern track towards Athens.

As soon as we passed 10 000 feet the screens where dropped down again, featuring today we only had the moving map. Aegean only provides movies/sitcoms on flights between Athens and London Heathrow. More than sufficient for me, just too bad you could not see on the map where we exactly where. There where diverse audio channels as well.

Today was a cloudy day above Germany.

Flying over the NUE area and waving hello to fellow member and friend Planehunter.

Munich Airport, last time I was here it was 35 degrees

14.00 in Dusseldorf, 15.00 in Athens about an hour since we where airborne and still another hour and a half to go the meal service began. Today's offering consisted of a warm pasta with some Greek (free) red wine. The portion was sufficient enough and the taste was very good, no complaints here.

Diverse pen marks were found on the seat.

Soon we where over the Alps.

Just an amazing view, isn't it?

And even more...

Soon it was time for a pit-stop. Unlike may cabin pics I've seen of Aegean SX-DGD had more or less the same seating model found on many airlines such as Germanwings, US Airways, Air Canada, Aer Lingus, British Airways,...

The rest of the flight passed rather uneventful.

16:05 Eastern European time or 15:05 Central European time our Airbus A320 slowly started descending towards Athens. Here is the total route from Dusseldorf to Athens this afternoon.

The Passengers of Aegean Airlines 841 preparing for the Arrival in Athens.

Around the Khalkidhiki area.

Clear skies, blue seas and no snow in sight.. That just feels good in our typical Belgium winter.

Tracking along the Greek East Coast

The Aegean sea taken from an Aegean Airlines plane.

.

Soon on final approach to runway 21.

.

16:32 in Athens, 15:32 in Dusseldorf. SX-DGD landed on Athens' runway 21. Announcements were made in Greek and English with a German audio recording.

Despite there where many free gates, we went to a hardstand operation.

.

16:37 in Greece, 15:37 in Germany we came to a full stop.

.

right beside SX-DVQ, The Aegean Star Alliance A320. Wouldn't have mind to have logged her on our flight from Dusseldorf again.

Soon the doors were opened, and a visit to the best seat was secured.

.

First officer's side of SX-DGD.

.

I soon thanked the crew and deboarded to the waiting bus to take us to the terminal.
Last view of SX-DGD, who had the honors to operate my first flight of 2013.

.

Arrival in Athens Efharistos International Airport

The airport was very calm for the time being, a few other flights from inside Greece and Europe had just arrived as well. Others then that there was a Swiss Airbus A320 operating LX 1823 to Geneva with more than an hour delay. I was inside the airport at 16:45 and soon searched the FIAS. Hmmm wait.... Greek version?

Or maybe English would be a bit easier..

With no checked luggage I was soon outside of the airport which was quite deserted due to the limited number of departures.

Post flight

After exploring the airport a bit I took the 17.30 metro to the city. One hour later I arrived at the Inhios hotel which was very basic. Well for 56 EUR's you can't complain to much I believe..

And the bathroom with shower.

.

I had 2 nights in Greece before commencing my return journey back home. So I had some time too see the city as well. Like the parliament.

And what beats walking the park in those open and clear skies.

Recently I rewarded myself with a new camera Nikon 3200, great conditions to test it's features in.

And no Athens visit without seeing the Akropolis.

Overall Remarks.

Aegean Airlines 0841 from Dusseldorf to Athens:

Departure: 80% (Nice and very easy airport, friendly and helpfull staff. Not that much to to post-security.)
Aircraft cleanliness : 80% (Fresh appearance, however multiple penmarks on my seat.)
Seat Comfort: 70% (Pretty cramped, thank goodness for the empty seat next to me.)
Crew: 70% (Business friendly and reserved.)
IFE: 80% (moving map and diverse audio channels)
Catering: 90% (Very good portion and quality.)
Arrival: 80% (Easy and efficient)

Total score = 79%

How did today's flight compare

Aegean Airlines 0841 on 11/FEB/2013 = 79 %
M. Haul Economy on Aegean Airlines Average = 83% (2nd place of 8 in the category)
Dusseldorf Airport average = 75% (20th place of the 56 in the category)
Athens Airport average = 75% (22th place of the 56 in the category)
Airbus A320-200 average = 75% (13th place of the 39 in the category)

Overall verdict

Overall I had a pretty good experience with Aegean Airlines, however I could not find anything that sets them apart from their competitors like Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Air France, Swiss, British Airways, KLM, ... as Europe's best carrier and found them more or less on level with the above mentioned (based on other reports and pictures). However I'm not complaining at all. While we had sufficient In Flight Entertainment and great catering during our flight the seat pitch was on the tight side. The crew on our flight was a bit reserved as well, they did what they had to do but nothing more than that. Will I fly them again? Sure, if price and timing work out in my favor I would not hesitate to fly them again. Dusseldorf and Athens are 2 good medium sized airports. I'm surprised how many traffic there was in Dusseldorf but it's sure a good alternative to the expensive one-way fares to Star Alliance hubs ex-Brussels. I have another flight in 6 weeks out of DUS due to BRU being too high in fare. The only big letdown was DB, comm'on 2 delayed and broken ICE's to Dusseldorf. The grass really Isn't greaner in Germany in my opinion.

As a bonus I would like to give a list of regs I spotted in Dusseldorf and Athens

Hi Marc,

Very nice report about A3.
Reminds me a lot about the flights i took with them some weeks ago.
The food looks fine for that sector.
Also i really like the pictures of Athens.

Thanks a lot for sharing!

Hey Marc,

Nice little TR here.

Aegean looks decent... I see you like to escape to better weather in winter

I prefer the Greek version of the FIAS myself... I'm definitely travelling if I see that

Hi Marc

Great report. Looks like you certainly got the hang of your new camera - those are lovely pictures you took of Athens.

I think Aegean do a really excellent job, the level of service they provide is quite high and so is the quality of the food. By the way, do the female flight attendants still wear those incredibly tight fitting uniforms or were they wearing something else because it was winter?

Cheers,
William

Hallo MSS658!

Really good to see another signature MSS658 report online! It’s funny to read I had more or less the same problems on the ICE train to DUS last year. It appears it’s niever ever running on schedule. Methinks that railway line is congested and full of speed limits. Admittedly, the ICE is a comfortable way to travel! Aegean apparently did a good job as well. Quite surprised to see a hot meal   . And how come you couldn’t see where you were on the flight map? That’s what these maps are for, no

Hi Marc, great report. Nice to see a few pics from DUS. It's a great airport I think - not massive, whilst not being too cramped either.

A3 look pretty good, although not too sure if I'll get the chance to try them any time soon. BA's 767's are much more appealing than an A32X unfortunately.

Great pictures of Athens too - a city I'd like to visit - just maybe not in that hotel going by the state of the bathroom!

Hey Marc !

Nice to see a report about an A3 flight!
Your impression of them is quite similar to mine 3 weeks ago, I ordered on my flight a seafoodmeal, which as well was very good. On my flight the FAs did wear armless clothes, did they do so also during winter time ??
Also nice impressions of the city of ATH, reminds me of my stay there 2 years ago, well Ive been there 3 weeks ago but only from evening to the early morning, so I hadnt the chance to visit something of Athens.

Thanks for sharing Marc !

Hola Marc!

Nice to see another of your reports on line.

Great to see A3, they seem to deliver a very nice service to ATH. Glad you escaped the north winter... and had a pleasant saty in the capital of Greece.

They seem to offer a nice lunch for the sector, hope some other airlines learn from that.

Salut!

You sure are posting trip reports quite fast lately. Another nice one here provided with some nice pictures.
Great idea to leave the Belgian winter and have some nice days in the sun, logging a new airport and airline is a nice bonus!

Hi Marc,

Nice report sir! Although I thought the meal looked a bit carelessly put together. You always seem to have good luck visiting the flight decks.

Many thanks,

Hi Marc !

Nice report with nice pictures !

Legroom looks really bad. That must have been difficult for the length of that flight. I think I'd avoid Aegean just for that.

Hot lunch is a big plus.

You had some great views over the alps along the way and nice scenery just before arrival too.

Nice pictures from Athens! I was there in September 1988.

Looking forward to the return portion.

Nice report. Always good to see pictures from back home. You can't beat Aegean's catering, I would always pick an A3 flight over LH when flying for work. The warmed up bread rolls instead of the cold disgusting thing that passes as bread on some airlines makes a lot of difference!

Quoting The777Man (Reply 13):

I am surprised at this. Either the OP is very tall or something was off. A3 has 32'' pitch in Y, more generous than other European majors. I doubt there are airlines that have more than this in Y.

Oh man, that looks really grubby. If Greece wants to attract more tourists, that’s definitely not the way to present a hotel room...

Yeah that doesn't look good. But, as in every country, there are good and bad hotels, expensive and cheap. This looks like more on the cheap side, I have stayed in much worse and in places that are considered more, lets say, "cosmopolitan".

Hi Marc,

Very nice report about A3.
Reminds me a lot about the flights i took with them some weeks ago.
The food looks fine for that sector.
Also i really like the pictures of Athens.

Thanks a lot for sharing!

Johannes

Thanks, Glad you liked it.

Hey Marc

Nice report and nice to see had a good flight. Also nice to see you got a hot meal on that flight. Looks like they gave you Pasteli ( honey, sesame snack ) . I love those

Glad you liked it.

Quoting OA260 (Reply 3):
Fantastic shot !! Love it .

Thanks!

Quoting OA260 (Reply 3):
I have to say that bathroom in the hotel is terrible !

Well I guess I should not complain for 25 EUR the night

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 4):
Hi Marc,

nice report with some good pictures! A3's product still looks quite decent - and you were lucky to get a meal without octopus!

Thanks, glad you liked it! No complaints about A3, just don't find them to be the best regional carrier.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 4):
That will change soon.

Good to know!

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 4):
There's another one in ICE colors as well. Btw - it's definitely TUIfly, the name Hapag Lloyd has disappeared from the airline business, unfortunately.

Thanks!

Did not notice them yet.

Hi Marc

Great report. Looks like you certainly got the hang of your new camera - those are lovely pictures you took of Athens.

Thanks, glad you liked it.

Quoting knightsofmalta (Reply 5):
I think Aegean do a really excellent job, the level of service they provide is quite high and so is the quality of the food. By the way, do the female flight attendants still wear those incredibly tight fitting uniforms or were they wearing something else because it was winter?

Cheers,
William

I can agree that A3's catering is superb.

@Nils:

Quoting Sultanils (Reply 6):
Hallo MSS658!

Really good to see another signature MSS658 report online! It’s funny to read I had more or less the same problems on the ICE train to DUS last year. It appears it’s niever ever running on schedule. Methinks that railway line is congested and full of speed limits. Admittedly, the ICE is a comfortable way to travel!

Thanks, glad you liked it. What really gets to me is that railway enthiousasts will easy talk about DB as we would speak about 'EK' or 'SQ'. However I do not find the grass greener over there, I had 30 mins delay the other day as well.

Quoting Sultanils (Reply 6):
Aegean apparently did a good job as well. Quite surprised to see a hot meal . And how come you couldn’t see where you were on the flight map? That’s what these maps are for, no

Catering was superb

Quoting Sultanils (Reply 6):

Hey Marc !

Nice to see a report about an A3 flight!
Your impression of them is quite similar to mine 3 weeks ago, I ordered on my flight a seafoodmeal, which as well was very good. On my flight the FAs did wear armless clothes, did they do so also during winter time ??

Thanks, glad you liked it. Too bad they did not where anything sleeveless.

Quoting Emek96 (Reply 9):
Also nice impressions of the city of ATH, reminds me of my stay there 2 years ago, well Ive been there 3 weeks ago but only from evening to the early morning, so I hadnt the chance to visit something of Athens.

Thanks for sharing Marc !

Great to see A3, they seem to deliver a very nice service to ATH. Glad you escaped the north winter... and had a pleasant saty in the capital of Greece.

They seem to offer a nice lunch for the sector, hope some other airlines learn from that.

however I could not find anything that sets them apart from their competitors like Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Air France, Swiss, British Airways, KLM, ... as Europe's best carrier

I guess the key word here is "regional". A3 did not win the overall best European award, but that of the best regional. And compared to other carriers of its size I think A3 is up there with the best.

Thanks for the fun read!
