Hello everyone,

The other day, i stumbled accross an article saying that Aurigny was considering replacing its British Trislanders with German Dorniers soon, even if the fleet could continue to operate until 2034! Whichever solution is chosen by the States of Guernsey, these infos reminded me that last year i had some nice experiences on this type.

In order to formally activate my BA Executive Club account, i opted to fly to Jersey and then log this unusual plane (not quite graceful actually), just for the fun!

Many A.netters have already covered the area such as BrusselsSouth with his great report:
Small Planes And Short Runways : Channel Islands (by BrusselsSouth Sep 2 2010 in Trip Reports)

Here is the simple routing:

1) Gatwick – Jersey: BA2772 – British Airways
2) Jersey – Guernsey: GR855 – Aurigny Air Services
3) Guernsey – Southampton: GR202 – Aurigny Air Services

Following an ordinary CityJet flight to LCY and a bit rushing, i arrived there thanks to the Gatwick Express which is rather expensive compared to the other train option.

The nearest destination from here?

The SSK did not recognize my national identity card hence i was directed to the manned counter, from where the friendly agent confirmed me in no time the seat in an emergency exit pre-booked on line. Not bad for my first flight with Speedbird.

Quiet tight timewise, i just took a couple of pictures before going to the gate where boarding was already on its way judging by the very little queue. LGW is really straightforward compared to LHR and proved to be very convenient.

Connecting time was short because thereafter GR855 and until 5pm no Mk.III was rostered on that route. Moreover GR allows free changes up to 30 minutes before departure.

Prior stepping inside the aircraft, a ground agent calls your name and fills the front rows first, probably for balance reasons. For those of you discovering for the first time this aircraft, please refer to your best friend for all its technical details.

A way too early, time came to set off to the airport. Again BP was also printed at home.

Although being a small regional airport, everything that a modern traveller expects to see can be found here; for instance a duty free shop, a café and 2 lounges (Flybe and Blue Islands).
On the ground floor, the airside part offers a decent view during the day. Moreover the airport undergoes (went) some extension as seen during the eve's bus ride.

In all flights departing from the Channel Islands, passengers are entitled to complimentary drinks. I initially thought the vending machine would work the same way as in Jersey but this one requires a special token being omitted by the checkin agent. However in no time another staff member came to apologize and handed over 2 tokens where finally only one was used. Free wifi worked perfectly.

CONCLUSION:

British Airways:

For a first flight and for 55 min journey, apart from the cabin worn out, everything was smooth: great price, good pitch and splendid drinks and professional ground and inflight staffs!

Now, for my second and (probably) last flight with BA, planned for 2014, your help is desired to choose the most alluring route in business class (using award Avios and once the Tesco Clubcard points are credited   ) amid a daytime B767 from Lusaka, the A380 overnight from JNB, or anything else in North America...

Aurigny Air Services:

It was a great experience, they were professional all the way and merit consideration for trips to/from Channel Islands. Thumbs up !

Hi Leonard,

A very nice report on some very interesting routes, and that lovely Normand aircraft. What a strange, narrow aircraft it is!

that lovely Normand aircraft. What a strange, narrow aircraft it is!

The last segment was almost "horrible": poor view, cramped and worst row and with a passenger next to me could not move that much!

Quoting lukeyboy95 (Reply 4):
First time? Really? What about when you were hopping to and from EDI?

Yup first time!
Airlines that i have flown to/from EDI are U2, BE, WX (AF) and BMI only.
Most of my actual miles with BA have been transfered from the BMI Diamond Club account and for the very small amount left it will come from Tesco shopping    .

Quoting lukeyboy95 (Reply 4):

BA A380 to JNB? Has that been announced yet?

I don't know how official is it but BA website indicates these infos:

Quote:
Introducing our new A380. The world’s largest passenger airliner will soon be flying for British Airways between London Heathrow, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Johannesburg.

1/To Los Angeles: start date - 24 Sept
BA269: LHR16h15 - LAX1915 days 246

2/To Hong Kong: start date - 22 Oct
BA25: LHR18h30 - HKG13h05 daily

3/To Johannesburg: start date 14 Feb 14
BA55: LHR18h00 - JNB06h55 days 357

source: http://www.britishairways.com/en-gb/...ion/flight-information/airbus-a380

So any suggestion between the 787 and the 380, and Africa or Amercia?

Sometimes and mostly before summer or holidays, TV channels broadcast programs investigating in some « precarious » charter airlines in North Africa or Eastern Europe that (unfortunately) dissimulate many and mostly bad suprises for passengers... Hello!

Interesting report, the Trislander sure looks different, I remember seeing them in Bournemouth, shame I never thought about taking a flight on them.

Both Jersey and Guernsey airports look nice, but Aurigny... not so much, I chuckled at the dreary Duty Free ¨Shop¨ but I guess for the size of the island it must be an adequate airport.

I agree with the rest about the bad upkeep of the BA 734, but then again I have been on some VY A320s that looked far worse for wear.

Most likely yes !
The proposals to fund such replacements would be put to the States later in 2013, that's all available so far !
But you may already know that each taxpayer would end up paying roughly gbp 350 for the new aircrafts !

We went again in May this year, simple KLM return so I didn't post a full report on here, though I did on my own blog:
http://signol.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/south-africa-2013.html

We did book just book our next trip for February, something a little different (well for us at least!) - LH LHR-FRA-JNB both ways on the A380. Will be different too as my wife and daughter will fly out one day, myself and my 4 year old son will fly out 5 days later (as he goes to school now and cannot have time off for "holidays") and we'll all return together the week later.

Thanks

Hello guys many thanks for the new feedbacks, always appreciated  .

Oh yes, Blue Islands and Aurigny had Trislander services to BOH, I think they dropped it now.

Too bad, does Blue Islands still operate Trislander nowadays ?

Quoting MIAspotter (Reply 22):
The oldest VY bird I´ve been on is EC-GRH which was delivered to IB in 1990! but some of the newer ones were quite thrashed as well.

it looks like it will still fly for more years
Do you think it's normal wear or due to careless passengers ?

Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 23):
Lovely report Leonard!

Thanks Gabriel  .

Thank BA plane looks like it could do with some TLC back at the maintenence base!

Yup you are right !

Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 23):
I really need to check out the Channel Islands sooner or later, and get a trip on the TriIslander.

You should definitely go and before they retire them

Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 23):
Alderney Airport looks like somewhere interesting to check out - and the shopping there looks great!

LOL !

Quoting signol (Reply 24):
That's nice   If you have Oneworld status on other airlines (eg. Cathay Pacific, free with certain Amex cards) you will be able to select your seat ahead of time.

Unfortunately i don't, so i will wait and hope until the day before:-( .
