Flying back north: The Blue way. TPA-BOS-KEF

Introduction

Hi all, and welcome to this 3rd and final part of my spring 2013 Florida series! This report features a report on both B6’s 320 service from Tampa to Boston and FI’s 753 night flight across the Atlantic taking me home.

As those of you who follow my reports know, I travel to Florida around twice a year – in spring and then in fall. Sometimes my family wants to take the “boring way” which means KEF-SFB direct. Fortunately for me all Orlando flights were sold out so we looked for other ways to go. For those who didn’t read part 1 & 2, on the way out I flew Icelandair and US Airways via Washington on a KEF-IAD / DCA-TPA routing. On the way back we chose jetBlue via BOS because of a combination of timing and price.

This report is dedicated to Alex (dc9northwest) who missed the 753 on his KEF-BOS flight just a few days earlier. It’s also dedicated to Lari-Pekka (Lufthansa747) who sadly passed away earlier today. May he RIP.

The report

As we all know, good things come to an end sooner or later. After 2 weeks of relaxation in the paradise that Sarasota, FL is the day of return had unfortunately come. The good part was, that meant 2 more flights for my logbook!

All ways lead to airports!   (for those of you who don’t know, Clearwater is PIE airport served by the likes of Allegiant, Canjet and Sunwing).

That’s us! Roadside bag drop available for 5 USD, pretty good I must say. No queues either.

Although the check in lines inside were pretty thin (at least for B6, as you can see the same can’t be said for the WN checkin desks).

After heading through security (which was a breeze BTW, very friendly TSA staff) we headed to the food court. I had some Quiznos while the rest of the family had some pizzas at Pizza Hut Express. Luckily our gate was right next to the food court so I could spot right to the last minute!

I must say the sharklets fit the A320 quite nicely! N619NK, a brand-new Spirit example. Not sure I would like to fly these guys.

I love the B6 seats, they’re perfect for the type of flights I fly with them (2-4 hrs). Thick leather, nice IFEs and airy cabin. Only downside is the terrible in-flight map but as I often watch shows or sport games instead of the air show I don’t mind it that much (don’t flame me for this PH!   )
Me and my brother were in 7DF with 7E vacant. Always nice to have an open seat next to you.

We grabbed our bags, which took quite long to arrive, before walking over from Terminal C to E where all international flights (except Canada) + Southwest/AirTran depart from.
Lines through security were huge and as a consequence we didn’t get airside until 19:30, 2 hours after we touched down. This was my first bad connecting experience at BOS but I guess we went through at rush hour (3 full 747s + 2 full A330s + a full 763 + a full 753).

After grabbing a Whopper and a Coke at BK I went for a peek at the aircraft parked by the terminal.

Me, my dad and brother then decided to kill the remaining time by going to the lounge. In BOS Icelandair uses the Virgin Clubhouse. Virgin Atlantic and Icelandair are the only airlines who use this lounge here in BOS.
It was nicely lit and quite roomy. Also it was very modern. I didn’t take any pictures of the lounge itself as it was quite full and that could’ve been considered rude (I have a Canon SLR now so not possible to be discrete!   )
I managed to take a picture of my brilliant meal though.

Wonderful clam chowder! In my books, it should be illegal to pass through BOS without having at least one bowl of this delicious soup.  http://i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s436/SRQKEF15/PHOTOS%20VIDS%202/IMG_4089_zps3cc4c3af.jpg

It tasted just as good as it looked! Other offerings were various salads, some kind of pork, drinks (both soft and alcoholic) along with chips and other snacks. All in all a pretty nice and enjoyable lounge which I would totally recommend. Only downside is it has no apron views.

Soon it was time to head upstairs as boarding was called from gate E8B.

Spot the albino! It’s TF-IST, which recently arrived from Atlasjet. It’s actually no coincidence that the reg is the same as Istanbul as it’s kind of an insider joke at Loftleidir which handled the purchase of the aircraft. Same with TF-ISK, it stands for the Icelandic krona.

jetBlue Airways proved to me yet again why they’re my favorite US airline. From the joking checkin agents to the nice FAs aboard it was just an overall nice experience.

On Icelandair, the flight was nice as always in my experience. Importantly on a night flight such as this one meal service was right on time which meant you could sleep for solid 4 hours.

Hope you enjoyed this report! Next up is another trip to the USA with stops in Denver, Oklahoma, Chicago and briefly in Minneapolis.

As a bonus, I’ll include some photos (both of aircraft and not) from RKV beneath the previous report list.

Thanks for reading!

Nice TR!! Great to see the final segment of your florida trip, and looking forward to your upcoming ones. We don't lack the FL 717s here, TPA-ATL on FL is running 7x daily all with 717s, and throw in the other seasonal flights that FL operates such as DAY, etc., you were bound to see alot of 717s. It will be sad not seeing them anymore. And that B6 messup, seemed kind of funny on the livery. I am always amazed as to how sparkling those WN 737 are, and I do agree they look great in the sun. I honestly love their livery. And if you aren't already entertained enough during a flight, the B6 ife looks great, with so many options. Definitely a carrier I want to try soon. This summer, I took a cruise from the port of boston, and I saw an aer lingus and an AF departure right in front of us, and we were pulling out right next to it. We also saw an IB departure, so it was really cool seeing the heavies so close. Once again, great TR!

Hi Sveinn,

nice report once again! Always good to see reports covering Florida.

Quoting srqkef (Thread starter):

I must say the sharklets fit the A320 quite nicely! N619NK, a brand-new Spirit example. Not sure I would like to fly these guys.

I would fly NK as it would be a new airline...but it should be a short flight.

Quoting srqkef (Thread starter):
N420WN taxiing out. Love the Canyon Blue! Especially in the clear Florida skies.

Interestingly, there's a B6 A320 named "Canyon Blue".

Quoting srqkef (Thread starter):
Only downside is the terrible in-flight map but as I often watch shows or sport games instead of the air show I don%u2019t mind it that much (don%u2019t flame me for this PH!

No worries!

Quoting srqkef (Thread starter):

Passing Jacksonville %u2013 not the best airshow out there as I mentioned earlier.

Still better than none!

Quoting srqkef (Thread starter):

I can only agree. My favorites are "May The Force Be With Blue" and "Song Sung Blue" (Dig at Delta!).

Quoting srqkef (Thread starter):
F-GITF, looking lovely in the evening sunlight. Long live the queen of the skies!

Ah, I was supposed to fly on an AF 744 earlier this year...and ended up in another company's 744. Report to follow soon.

Quoting srqkef (Thread starter):
LH 330 to FRA. Surprised that they only use 330%u2019s but not larger aircraft or are there more than 1x daily flights? I know they use 340s to MUC though.

There are two daily FRA-BOS flights during the summer season. MUC-BOS is mostly operated by an A333.

Quoting srqkef (Thread starter):
TF-FIX %u2018Hengill%u2019, Icelandair%u2019s sole 757-300 is our ride today.

It took me a surprisingly short time. I also enjoyed doing it, took me on a nice history ride of my flights.

Quoting adamspotter (Reply 9):
Hmm, 2 flights to Amsterdam within 30 minutes,, What are those doing there?

I think those are same-flight-number flights via a hub and on to AMS. IIRC 234 is ATL and 238 DTW or JFK. Not sure though.

Quoting adamspotter (Reply 9):
Are WN planes that dirty?

I think most of the -300 and older -700 planes are. Of course they fly through Florida, the desert and California alot which doesn't help.

Hi Sveinn, great TR as usual. I hate driving the Sunshine Skyway. High bridges are a fear for me! Many years ago it collapsed and was a disaster. I can never forget that! You are correct, skip NK! You end up paying way more than a legacy customer in many cases. I preferred their old paint scheme too. Very unique. Yes the B6live TV map is old and outdated. Hopefully it will change soon. I think instead of SAV it is actually JAX airport, but it was hard to tell. Isn't BOS a great airport to fly into. It was my home airport for a while in college and so convenient! Loved the bunny in your garden and that sunset. I would have cured the bunny and treated it as a pet!

Landing on every Continent almost on an annual basis!

Great report, Sveinn! Good to read another report about Icelandair.

F-GITF, looking lovely in the evening sunlight. Long live the queen of the skies!

I didn't realize that AF still flew 747's into BOS? This is great, and I hope it continues. Yes, long live the queen of the skies!

Wonderful clam chowder! In my books, it should be illegal to pass through BOS without having at least one bowl of this delicious soup.

This looks delicious. I'm getting hungry!

Great report, Sveinn. I like how you like to include so many pictures
Quoting srqkef (Thread starter):
Fortunately for me all Orlando flights were sold out so we looked for other ways to go

Nice

This report is dedicated to Alex (dc9northwest) who missed the 753 on his KEF-BOS flight just a few days earlier.

Cheers, Sveinn!

Quoting srqkef (Thread starter):
Only downside is the terrible in-flight map but as I often watch shows or sport games instead of the air show I don’t mind it that much (don’t flame me for this PH!   )

Not a real aviation enthusiast, then!  (Kidding of course)

Watching PSG play against Stade Rennais in Ligue 1. Trivia question: Whose world-known foot is that kicking the ball?

Ibra? Think he's the only world-known player there :P

Quoting srqkef (Thread starter):
And a surprise visitor – OY-RCH, Atlantic Airways’ newest A319. Well-known to fellow reporter Alex (dc9northwest).

Well, I've flown on RCG only but sure, RC is nice to see.

Quoting srqkef (Reply 10):
Hahaha of course!
At least he has flown the type with DL (and UA maybe?)

Just DL for me... Not a big fan of UA!

Thanks for your report,

Cheers,
Alex
