Hello all! Welcome to my report on my recent class trip to Salvador, Bahia in Brazil!

Quick background:
My grade at school is around 110 students and teachers, and I knew right away that there were going to be multiple flights for the trip. Sure enough, I was right and when the flights for 10th Grade came up on the school website I saw there were two flight pairs. One included TAM A320s both ways, and the other G3 738 outbound and TAM A321 for the return. I didn’t get to choose, people were randomly assigned so I prayed for the latter, and sure enough, god answered my prayers. In fact, I was super lucky, out of 110 people I was one of the only 23 that made the G3/JJ flight itinerary. I was super excited for the G3 738 as I have recently fallen in love with the Boeing Sky Interior and I was hoping that our a/c would have it. I also liked to have a little variation in my flights…

We left our school for GRU at about 7:45 in the morning, and we were seeing signs of aviation at around 9:30 after an hour and 45 minutes on a bus.

Soon we arrived at the terminal, got off the bus and retrieved our luggage.

After checking in and being told to meet at the security checkpoint at 11:15am, me and a few friends headed off to find a seat with a view. LA A320

In the background you can see an AA 772, a DL 764 and another tail which I believe is the US 762 from CLT.

Later the DL 764 left for the parking ramps and an AA 77W took its place.

Security was a breeze as usual, and after checking the departure boards I headed off to gate 26 where our flight was scheduled to depart.

When I stepped aboard, I immediately saw the little Boeing Sky Interior control screen on the bulkhead, how I do love it! IMHO Boeing interiors are nicer than those from other manufacturers hands down.

My first recorded sighting of an A318  http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-r-PClIqF018/Uj2meABw2EI/AAAAAAAACIE/Bd9EEu9R7PM/s1600/100_0082.JPG

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dW1voZyqnjA/Uj2mluuYceI/AAAAAAAACIc/Hi1e0Ww1gG0/s1600/100_0085.JPG

So after I got settled in my seat I reached down to get my phone out to put it on airplane mode and... wait a minute... its not here, s***! I frantically asked around if anyone could see it under the seats and I thoroughly checked through my bag, and no luck. Boarding had already finished, but I ran up to the front of the airplane anyway, told the purser my situation and she asked the captain who responded, "go look for it, quick!" Hats off to the TAM flight crew for letting me go search! So I sprinted up the jetway and back to where I was sitting but couldn't find my phone. I quickly retraced my steps and had no luck finding it. So I sadly ran back down the jetway (getting yelled at by a lady who thought I was trying to escape onto the flight) and re-boarded the aircraft. The purser asked me if I found it and when I said no, she was extremely sympathetic. I thanked her for letting me go look, re-took my seat, all bummed out that I had lost my phone.

As the flight was being held, we pushed back as soon as I sat back down.

Something that I've noticed when flying on A321s is that during cruise, the aircraft seems to roll perhaps one degree or less even left and right, left and right throughout the flight. I observed this when flying SJU-CLT last year as well. Am I going crazy, or can somebody provide some insight as to why that happens?

As we were deplaning by air-stairs again, the captain saw me and asked if I had found my phone. Good job on a great trip report! It makes me want to return to Brazil.

I've never flown TAM or GOL before (my flights to/from/within Brazil have involved American, the old Varig and Aerolineas Argentinas) several years ago.

I have wanted to fly GOL in particular, but now I am annoyed that they've gone overboard with cost cutting by making everything "buy on board" for their in-flight service. Kind of cheap, if you ask me. TAM looks interesting, though. Very nice of the crew to let you go look for your phone, too--tells me that they were friendly and understanding.

I must say that even larger Brazilian airports take the lack of an available jetbridge in stride. On my first trip to Brazil, at Porto Alegre our entire Varig Boeing 777-200 used airstairs to deplane because our flight was late and all of the other jetbridges were in use (this was in 2006). Very flexible thinking--which I think exists more in Brazil than in my own country.

If there is no jetbridge available here in Atlanta and many other large U.S. airports, your entire flight just has to wait until one becomes available. Quite frustrating.

At any rate, thanks for sharing!

Would agree 100%.

Being an American living in Brazil, I would completely agree!

They are exactly that, friendly, professional as well. Having now flown TAM both domestic and international, I would compare them to American Airlines, both having similar products.

Hi, I enjoyed reading your report! Brazil is so far away from where I am and I do hope I would be able to try those airlines one day.

You are right about the BSI, the interior is very nice indeed.

Not too sure about the rolling part of your A321 ride, I didn't have that experience when I flew on Vietnam's A321 earlier this year.

Cheers,
Charles

Surprised to see GOL female attendant w/mane of hair all the way down; usually foreign airlines are picky about FAs grooming, so not like in USA. Is GOL relaxed? No IFE on GOL either???

Thanks a lot for the detailed trip report. I was last in GRU when I flew the 77W inaugural on AA, and your photos make me really want to go back! I actually did a domestic leg on AD while I was in Brazil. I snagged an incredible fare only a few days out from VCP to GIG. Unlike your G3 experience, I was really impressed with all the service: Two free snacks, a drink, free TV and airshow - all on a one hour flight.

Since AA has a much more generous baggage allowance to Brazil than to anywhere else in the world, and I received such good service on AD, free bags etc., I just thought that there might be a baseline for all carriers for service. I guess not!

Regardless, those BOB sandwiches look really good. I wonder if they taste as good as they look in the menu?

How was SSA? Is it worth visiting?

We decided on Subway for lunch

Why is GRU so full of American brands? I was hungry when I arrived there and all I could find were restaurants I could get at home. I like Subway and McDonalds sometimes, but c'mon Globalization!! I want Brazilian food. Here's my vote for a local fruit stand at the airport!

Flaps for departure set. I like the way 737 flaps look.

Indeed. Nice lighting on that photo too.

Quoting United1689 (Thread starter):
The F/As came around with drinks and a small snack box.

Pretty good service for such a short flight. That's a bigger cup than what you'd get on a US 2-hr segment, too. Shoot. Bigger cups and actual snacks included. Can't find that included on any US domestic flight anymore.

Thanks again for the excellent report!

I think Gol may be a bit more relaxed than other carriers as they are attempting to be like other LCCs (although you can hardly call Gol a true LCC) and therefore they have more leniency in matters like that.

Quoting PRAirbus (Reply 7):

Nope. Only the magazines and of course, the windows  . It is part of Gol's cost cutting measures I believe.

Yes I hope very much to fly Azul one day! I hear it is great.

Certainly, I would return!

That was at SSA actually, but GRU is no different. Fast food is common in Brazilian airports because here in Brazil, sit-down meals typically take much longer than other places like the US, where a 45 minute meal is common. Here, a sit-down meal is usually around 2-3 hours, time most people don't have in the airport.

No you can't, although I don't mind paying a few bucks for a good snack box on UA.

Hello

Interesting report, thanks for sharing. GOL and TAM seem to have a good product.
Nice to see the sky interior on GOL, but prefer the TAM seating colours.

Greetings

Something that I've noticed when flying on A321s is that during cruise, the aircraft seems to roll perhaps one degree or less even left and right, left and right throughout the flight. I observed this when flying SJU-CLT last year as well. Am I going crazy, or can somebody provide some insight as to why that happens?

It's funny you mention that. I flew an AY 321 last week and I noticed exactly the same thing. I'm flying a BA 321 in November, so will see if I notice it again then.

Yes, the cabin colors are nice but the seats are as hard as rock

I'm glad I'm not the only one to notice! Perhaps I should start a thread in Tech Ops about it...

Hi United 1689,

Great report on some Brazilian domestic flying which is something I don't see much of here. Your report also greatly compares TAM with GOL. Such a shame to see GOL has BOB, even a free drink would have been nice on a 2 hr flight. TAM looks quite nice here although the condition of the cabin looks a bit concerning.
Shame to hear you lost your phone, very nice of the captain to let you quickly look for your phone though. I don't see many doing that..

Thanks for sharing!

cheers,

Brendan

Great TR. Have to say though, I am not a fan of JJ's seat appearance. Those stripes are not happening for me.

I think the A332 has perfect dimensions IMO, although I prefer the look of the RR engines.

Agree about the dimensions on the A332. One of my favorite frames. However I much prefer those engines on them than the RR's.

Again a very well put together TR.
