B A C K G R O U N D

I first flew on a KLM 777 in 2004 but didn’t take pictures then so when I was planning my trip to fly Garuda’s new 777 (see report), I found out that I could also get on a KL 777 on the way there. Perfect opportunity to write a new report and this time with pictures.

T H E F L I G H T

Date : 11 September 2013
Route : Kuala Lumpur KUL – Jakarta CGK
Distance : 699 miles
Flight : KL 809
Flight Time : 1:44h
Dep. Time : 16:40
Aircraft : Boeing 777-306/ER
Registration : PH-BVD “Amboseli National Park”
Dep. Gate : C 02
Seat : 53K
Inflight Entertainment : Moving map, videogames, Telephone, Movies, Music, WiFi (?)

227th flight on a Boeing 777; 18th flight on a -300/ER
Flown on 127 Boeing 777 aircraft (airframes)

I checked in about two hours before departure and was given a seat right away which is great when you fly standby. I went directly to the gate and there were not many people in line at security or immigration. I saw on the arrivals boards that the inbound aircraft was arriving late but I had plenty of time in Jakarta for my connecting flight so no problem.

I had an excellent lunch in a restaurant and then went spotting before heading to the gate where I charged my phone. I saw the inbound aircraft arrive and people deplaned.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/KL%2077W/IMG_0819.jpg

Boarding was by row number and was enforced so that people would not board out of turn. I was seated towards the back and was one of the first to board. The seat was comfortable and legroom was good.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/KL%2077W/IMG_0824.jpg

There was a pillow at every seat but no blanket but the flight is short so no problem.

The personal TV at the seat was large and they had a two-prong socket. I don’t understand why so many airlines have the two-prong socket. That makes it more difficult for passengers to use their own headsets which are usually just one-prong.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/KL%2077W/IMG_0828.jpg

The controller for the PTV was in front of me which I don’t like that much. Another thing I didn’t like was the very narrow armrest. I could not find any USB port or outlet to charge electronic devices at the seat. There were no individual air vents but that seems to be very common on the latest generation of aircraft. According to the inflight magazine, there’s supposed to be WiFi on the 77W for KL but I couldn’t find it or perhaps it was not activated.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/KL%2077W/IMG_0829.jpg

There were a lot of people on the flight with a load factor of about 75 %. I was lucky though and had the two seats next to me open.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/KL%2077W/IMG_0830-1.jpg

Boarding was fairly quick and we finally pushed back. A quick taxi and a very quick take off for the short flight to Jakarta.

Once in the air, hot wet towels were handed out which was nice. A snack service followed but there was only a vegetarian option which I don’t like so I just drank my coca-cola. It would have been nice to have an option…..

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/KL%2077W/IMG_0833.jpg

I spent most of the flight enjoying the scenery outside.

Routing was straight to Indonesia and then along the coast of Sumatra to Jakarta. We got up to a cruising altitude of 37 000 ft.

C O N C L U S I O N

The food and the entertainment is okay but doesn’t impress. The flight attendants were very friendly and remains the greatest asset of KLM.

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j214/The777Man/KL%2077W/IMG_0906.jpg

Looking forward to comments!

Nice report. I avoid KLM's 777-300s like the plague due to the 3x4x3 seating. Extremely cramped and tight - these planes seat many more passengers than their 747s! Probably the reason that the armrest seemed so narrow to you. I'm sure it was survivable for this short flight, however.

As far as the WiFi is concerned, I think only one or two planes have it as of yet. It's slowly being rolled out currently.

KL is an average airline ... nothing special. Decent enough if the price is right but not really worth going out of your way for. Again, thanks for posting this report.

Hi, L.,

good to see you again on one of these mighty 777´s.
Well done, a good impression about the KL product nowadays.
And if the flight counts for the status and the price is right, that´s the way to go.

Greetings,

Great report, thanks for sharing!
Being a fan of KL I must say that the seating arrangment looks cramped.
Would not want to be on a long haul flight from AMS to GRU or KUL with them

Lars, good to read your small view on KLM's 77W product. Agree, nothing to write home about but bearable for this short flight. I would not take this aircraft all the way to Southeast Asia, honestly, unless I can get Economy Comfort seating then it would be OK for me.
Was there no choice in sandwich or did the ran out of choice meanwhile, since you were more in the back?

Eric

I fully agree with you about this KLM trip worth writing about. Very nice report! I love your pictures!

Could it be protecting measurement for the seat hardware?

Thank you for sharing! I was curious about KLM on-board service nowadays on short fifth freedom segments like KUL-CGK.

See you next weekend,

Hello The777Man,

Another nice roundup of another nice T7 flight. What luck you had to be on the Skyteam logo jet! I do like KLM’s overall cabin look and feel. And good to hear the crew were excellent as is almost the standard on KLM.

Quoting The777Man (Thread starter):
That makes it more difficult for passengers to use their own headsets which are usually just one-prong.

I have a small adapter for that. Works like a charm. I rarely get to use it though since I don’t fly too often

Hello Lars,

Nice report, good to hear about your experience on the KL 5th freedom flight. Flew it myself two years ago, which was nice as I was travelling through Asia at that time - sample a bit of home this way. Shame to see they downgraded the meal service, two years ago I was served a small hot meal, fried rice with satay.

Thanks for sharing!

Hi Lars,

Nice to see you trying the 77W from KL, especially on a short segment. Overall, KL looks decent, but probably pales in comparison to airlines from SE Asia (as expected)... That said I still consider them the best in Europe... that I've tried out, at least.

Thanks for the report and see you in ZRH,

Hi there 777Man,

Nice little report you made here on my home airline. I try to avoid KLMs 77Ws as much as possible due to the 3-4-3 seating, I need my space.
KLM looks decent here although I agree just having 1 snack option is quite poor, there should always be 2! Great to hear the crew were good as usual!

cheers,

Brendan

Hi Lars,

another enjoyable 777 report, well done! I know you weren't happy about not getting a regular 77W, but I can tell you I would have loved to fly on that beautiful Skyteam bird on the same route back in 2011!

Thanks!

Hi Lars,

Nice read, thanks for posting.

I nearly took this flight earlier in the year but decided to stick with MH on a 738. I think it was a wise decision, a nice stir fry chicken dish was served up in economy along with several glasses of a not too shabby red wine.

Legroom looked ok but I'd not want to do a longhaul economy flight on one of these, really don't like the high density layout.

Cheers

Mark

It is quite surprising that a more substantial meal isn't offered, but i suppose it was a short flight! Nevertheless, as it is known, KLM rocks with its soft-product as always! So that could make up for it i guess!

I was just happy to be on a 777 for such a short flight and even better to have three seats to myself. I would have been even more happy if the snack would have been to my liking or if at least there was a choice.

The crew was nice though!
