Kansas City To Nashville And Back On Southwest

Kansas City Int'l Airport
I arrived at the airport an hour and a half before departure. The check-in lines were long, but there were a lot of desks open. I hope I didn't have to go through another slow check-in like I did in Wichita. Fortunately, the line moved at a good pace and I got to the counter. I got the new Southwest boarding passes, instead of the plastic card, I got a paper ticket and a ticket jacket. After looking around for about 20 minutes, I joined the line for security at the Southwest gate area. The line wasn't too long and it moved along quickly. I wasn't selected for the thorough screening this time. My last trip put me through that twice, when I was leaving and returning. There was a lack of seating in the gate area. Many people were sitting on the floor, and many more were just standing up like I did since all the seats were taken. Hopefully this should improve with the renovations. I look forward to the new KCI, I like the airport's easy layout but it does get a little crowded and there are a lack of seats throughout the terminals as well as shops and restaraunts. The place is looking a little old. I noticed there was a fence extending the walls of the gate area to the ceiling. It looks funny. After being in the gate area for about 15 minutes, everyone formed 4 lines for each boarding group including pre-board at Gate B-28a. I was in the B group. After pre-board and A group was called, we were called down. I was towards the end of the line for the B group since I joined in too late so I don't think I could get a seat towards the front of the plane, where I prefer.

Boeing 737-700
Departs 2:30 - On Time
I found myself a seat at 14-F which was right on the wing where I usually end up sitting on most flights I go on. I notice the legroom on the -700s are a little better since Southwest gives an inch more legroom. A person took a seat at the aisle seat while I was in the window seat. Right before the flight closed, the seat next to me was taken and we closed the doors and pushed back. Our taxi took us pass some cargo DC-8s and the ramp where all those Vanguard planes were parking. The taxi was a bit long, the flight attendant announced that we were going to drive to Nashville. Southwest crews are known to have a sense of humor. We made it to the runway and took off. I watched Kansas City before we slipped through the clouds. I've been to Kansas City many times but I really haven't looked around the city itself. It looks like a nice town. The FAs took drink orders and later on we got the drinks. My Coca-Cola came in the usual tiny cup with mostly ice in it. They probably give each person 1/5 of the can or something. We got snacks, a tiny pack of peanuts and a bag of Cheese Nips which were actually the normal sized bags you can buy from a vending machine. The flying time was only about 1 hour and 15 minutes. I knew we were getting close as I saw Land Between the Lakes on the Tennessee/Kentucky border. The flight was uneventful. We began a descent and we went over downtown Nashville and the Cumberland River. I can notice many hills around the town as we made our final approach. We landed and quickly taxied to the C Concourse as a FA told everyone a blonde joke.

I made my way through the concourse to the main terminal area where I was to pick up my luggage. I went down to the 2nd floor where the baggage claim is at(If I remember correctly). It was about 5 minutes before the luggage showed up on the carousel. It must've been a little slow since it took me a while to get there. Nowhere near as slow as the baggage claim at Wichita when I flew in there a couple of weeks before. I got my bag and left the airport.

A week later
Showed up at the airport early for the 11:15 departure. The 3rd floor check-in area is nice. The reflecting sun panels and the banners with the cities on them(Paris, Tokyo, Vienna, etc) were a nice touch. Hoping to get into A Boarding Group this time, I was glad I was at the airport early to check in. It turns out I was too early and they took my bags and checked my ID. They told me to check in 45 minutes later at the gate. Another option was to return to the counter or check in at the skycap. Southwest gives you many options to check in. Since I didn't want to sit around for 2 hours, we drove around the area for a little while. We came back at about 10:30, 45 minutes before departure. I said goodbye to my relatives who took me to the airport and I went towards the C concourse. I was set aside for the thorough search again where I had the wand go around and my zipper in my pants set off the wand. Fortunately they knew it was the zipper so I didn't have to be strip searched or anything. I went down to gate C-15. I did take my time going down the concourse. There are are a good amount of shops and restaraunts here but the concourse didn't look very impressive, but it's good for an airport that isn't that large like Nashville. I wouldn't want to connect here, though. I got to the gate and 5 minutes later we formed 4 lines and the "cattle call" boarding procedure began. I was in B group again.

Nashville to Kansas City
Departs 11:15-On Time
I ended up taking the 2nd to the last row on the plane. The overheads were full so I had to place my bag under the seat in front which takes up a lot of legroom. After a while, we pushed back and taxied. This plane was a 737-300 but it was in the new scheme which looks good in my opinion. Unfortunately there's no new interior in this one. I guess the new interiors will only be on the 737-700s. We taxied to runway 20C where we stopped for a minute then we began the takeoff roll. I could notice the difference in noise in the back of the plane. The engines were LOUD on takeoff but as we began our cruise, the noise wasn't a problem. Once again, an uneventful flight. I could notice that the plane was a little dirty with garbage in the seat pocket and the interior looked a little worn. We got the same service as I did before, peanuts with Cheese Nips. This flight seemed to go by quickly. We approached a lot of storms into Kansas City, the captain announced it would be very bumpy. It sure was. As we went into Kansas City the plane was thrown around as we went through the dark clouds. We broke out of the clouds and we flew over Kansas City which looked like a very large city until we landed at KCI. It seemed like forever until I could get off the plane since everyone seemed slow getting off.

I got out of the gate area and went to the baggage claim where my parents were waiting for me. The bags were already on the belt. However it took a bit before my bag showed up. After that we made the short walk out of the terminal and across the road into the garage parking.

+Very Low Fares
=No-frills service was average for a short flight
-Older planes seem dirty

Kansas City Int'l:8/10
+Great layout
=Construction, but that means improvement
-lack of seating area
-lack of concessions
(Both -'s should be improved with the construction)
KCI is great for O&D flights

Nashville Int'l:8/10
+Terminal area is quite nice
-Concourse is a bit drab

thats a good idea adding that bit at the bottom for the summary, a really good idea!

What could possibly go wrong?
