This story is dedicated to A., any kind of pain has nothing to do with my great travel companion or the country itself!

The trip in one word:

DIVERSION

"The main intention around this trip is to visit the Bulgarian black sea coast, something new to me, a new departure airport to count on the map and all together with perfect nice local company after several invitations!".

Zdraveĭte skŭpi chitateli,
hello, dear readers,

it´s "Midsommar" time also in Germany, but I don´t find the way to Scandinavia this year, down the south for Bulgaria it is, just two weeks after the last adventure:

France Lille Hop! Airlinair Regional (by FLIEGER67 Oct 9 2013 in Trip Reports)

That´s the routemap so far and believe it or not,
also around this trip it´s necessary to show another one later on:

Many thanx to this great tool:

There is some work done with the previous departure airports. All the flights to reach these 200 places are now included:

Well, if you like to feel the pain, come on and stay with me!.

Service VIM 774 operated by Air VIA - Bulgarian Airways
Scheduled: 06.25 // 09.55

Well, it seems I should request for a renaming here. What about "Master of the short nights"?.
An lazy early afternoon departure is booked and confirmed.
TUIFly does the job and sells chartered flights by the leisure company TUI beside the own services as flight only.
The fare is 125.00 Euro´s.
Leaving FRA at 2.05 pm and arriving BOJ at 5.40 pm, my travel companions schedule is also fixed like this.
I was talking about chartered flights, isn´t it?.
Not that long prior to the trip there is a nice, irony, you know the way, message in the box!.
The new departure time is 06.25 am, take it or leave it.
Should I really go to sleep this night?.
I should, just for a couple of minutes, 0.30 am is set on the cell phone and it does the job again.
The motorway is calm as it should be during this time of the night and Tourcare sees me at 04.00 am. Wished the car a good further night and hoping on the shuttle for terminal 2.
Seat selection in advance is possible, but declined due to the extra costs. OLCI is not possible, ok nothing else expected.
The A320 is on schedule and so it looks like here.
Inbound from Varna, the same short night like me
and outbound without further notice
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BFS08/BG1301001_zps86ee015b.jpg
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BFS08/BG1301002_zps48622b35.jpg
A long, a really long, a terrible long queue, where is the end?. Around the corner from the two open counters.
Families with small kids, retirees and groups of "End of school parties" around. Is it really possible to fit in all these people in an A320?.
Do you feel the pain?.
Well, lucky me, while walking the queue I see an elder male agent, what looks like preparing another counter and soon thereafter a couple of other pax and me build a new line, an even shorter new line this time.
He speaks better english than german, sure ok with me, but we are in Germany right?.
No flight voucher, sure?. No flight voucher, this isn´t a package tour.
No baggage, sure?. No baggage, yes, I´am sure!.
Anyway, nice talking produced 03F, ok so far.
Good to see only a couple of people at passport check and further on also at security.
For an apron view in the early morning light

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BFS08/BG1301004_zps1d39eb7f.jpg
No lounge available here this early morning time.
Pretty fast, not that long after my arrival at the gate D02, boarding started for the apron bus tour
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BFS08/BG1301005_zps22d08e78.jpg
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BFS08/BG1301007_zpsb5ef4ba8.jpg
I´am on the last bus, do you expect late or lost pax on a service like this?.
20 minutes, boarding time is long gone, till all the sheep found the way!.
Well, this is one more example of the no-name-planes fleet, LZ-MDB is the scheduled A320.
New to the log, leg. no 101 on type

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BFS08/BG1301009_zpse63ed4ba.jpg

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BFS08/BG1301012_zps77e43982.jpg
This one is in service since 16.05.2007 with Air Via and NAS Air from Saudi Arabia, three planes on type are in the fleet and there are no incidents to report

06.55 am, 30 minutes late in the end, "Air Via" leaving the "Flughafen Frankfurt am Main", 2.10 hours from the 4000 meters runway "One-Eight". The sky is mostly cloudy and the temperature is 18 degrees.
Cockpit crew is from Bulgaria according to the names, not a single word from upfront, no infos at all. "Kapitan", do you have a voice?.
Beijing on this plane?. Well, do you feel the pain?

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BFS08/BG1301016_zpsfae33021.jpg
There is a safety card here and also something what is on some other airlines called as legroom!

Cabin crew is one male FA, young, ok
and three women, one middle aged, ponytail, black hair, all announcements in german, nice.
One elder, biz friendly and one young,
cute, large black hair, could be really nice but somewhat cold in the end.
English ok and an interior view with the
heavily used fabric seats

The load is 100%, no open seat to spot.
The frequent once a year travellers on the way.
Weird t-shirts and sports shorts this early time in the morning.
The cabin ceiling and the engine on the way

The plane looks like much nicer in the bright sun.
What about the pain?. No more, at least not more today, but believe me, the pain is still around the corner, ready to beat back!

Immigration takes a couple of minutes, finally stamped, no baggage to catch what gives me the chance to take over all the crowd.
And out in the public. No, I don´t need a taxi.
No, I don´t need a taxi. Should I better write a sign this way?. Like the people waiting with signs for Mr. X or company Y?.
There is a bus service for the city, leaving from the intersection down at the main road.
Good to see a bus approaching, but the driver doesn´t open the door, only pax to disembark.
There is a nice middle aged woman also waiting, airport staff so it seems. The bus runs on a circle through the town closeby, Sarafovo and will come back later for the drive to the city. Ah, good to know and there is also a conductor on the bus to sell the tickets, more good to know. Local advice, you know!.
A real pleasure, isn´t it, when you observe it later
that the bus route runs along the hotel and you walk all the way back from the main train station!.
Well, finally arrived, just a little bit tired, at the Gran Via Hotel with a nice welcome from the young woman at the desk.
My mail request for the top floor produced a large appartment on these aforementioned level.
And you know that there are private owners beside you when you see lot´s of shoes and other stuff close to the two other doors!

Further along the beach and as mentioned with the intro to the story, it is not only "Midsommar".
It is also "Johannistag", the day on which all the herbs and fragrants bloom most intense.
No feet to walk without a new aroma. Superb.
Bulgaria is the third largest exporter of herbs around the world, by the way

For sure an interesting place with an open entrance

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BFS08/BG1301124_zps657bf585.jpg
And just a little bit oldfashioned.
There are two flights on one confirmation managed by Fly.de.
BOJ-SOF scheduled on the A319 and further SOF-VIE on the E90, both on Bulgaria Air equipment.
The fare per leg is 55.00 Euro´s.
OLCI works, it´s just the standard need to catch the printout what works also within a minute at the counter managed by an elder woman.
But no boarding pass possible for the second leg.
I should catch it in Sofia. Why?.
Do you feel the pain, waiting around the corner?.
A thousand of russian travellers in line, but to my surprise, it goes fast forward.
Also the golden M. is here with an large open shop!

Definitely a place to spend some time waiting for a flight and enjoy the scenery

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BFS08/BG1301137_zps20a83e10.jpg
Ahem, it´s better beside all these interesting movements to have a view for the screen from time to time, isn´t it?

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BFS08/BG1301138_zps2e1c2c3f.jpg
And now you feel the pain!.
A two hour departure delay expected for exactly the same time like my further departure from Sofia.
Some talking with Bulgaria Air´s station manager doesn´t clear the situation. No other options out of BOJ by Bulgaria Air. The only possible way is to fly for Sofia and check it there again.
We bring you with the next available flight to Vienna.
A big thank you, that really calms me now though!.
Where is this irony out button?.
As long as he don´t know that there is another flight to go from Vienna on another confirmation.
VIE-FRA, where the car is eagerly waiting, sure I know.
And the return STR-VIE next month as the starter for another trip is also on this confirmation.
And if I don´t catch the VIE-FRA leg I will also loose the STR-VIE one.
And I will not make it, definitely.
A wifi code is managed by my local companion and I go to self check the options now.
Well, as simple as it is.
No flights to Central Europe ex BOJ by Bulgaria Air.
Catch a ticket on one of these charter flights leaving me stranded somewhere else.
Only one later flight to VIE by Austrian what leaves me stranded in VIE anyway.
Thanx god there are miles on several programs and therefore check the frequent flyer offers.
No available flight by M&M today, the same by FB, next morning as the first possible option.
Really lucky me, AB shows an flight SOF-TXL-FRA what seems possible to catch without a further delay, fixed
at 17500 miles, taxes and fees included.
Do you feel the pain anyway?.
Now, what´s going on at the apron?

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BFS08/BG1301182_zpsf1356aae.jpg
There is a nice so far elder woman at the service desk where we´ve done a talk about the situation. Once again thanx to my local companion, she even offered me a change from VIE as final on the ticket to TXL as the only possible chance to reach FRA this evening.
But lucky me again, that I´ve decided to fix the AB miles ticket.
You see on the screen that the Bulgaria Air TXL service is finally also running late and was also not departed till I´am leaving SOF!.

Lucky me, not that long to wait for the shuttle and a short ride later at Tourcare.
Another grumpy welcome by the car "You´re late",
but better late than never, isn´t it?.
And soon on the nightly way back for the homebase.

For sure, the conclusions:
1.)Air VIA FRA-BOJ: Nothing else expected.
2.)Bulgaria Air BOJ-SOF: Comfy, but late.
3.)TUIFly SOF-TXL: An relaxed but unexpected ride for the capital.
4.)Air Berlin TXL-FRA: Ontime on the final service of the day.

Turning the calendar for the second half of the year.
Yes, I know, just a little late, but anyway and what shows up:

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/ROM05/RO1302099_zps55618f3b.jpg

With the place to stay for the night not the really well known city.
Where is Iasi, is the question?.

Shte se vidim skoro,
take care,
comments welcome,

Hi Markus,

another really enjoyable report here, thanks a lot. Looks like your irony has reached a new level here, I like it this way, you know   ...

And guess what happened with that AirVia flight: "Hey, there is a certain Flieger67 booked on this service, no way he can depart that late in the afternoon. Let's change the departure time to a more suitable hour for him!"  ...

Nice short flight on Bulgaria Air, looks much better than expected actually. Except for the delay of course, but at least you had these AB miles available to rescue you.

Hi Markus,

As always, great report! Bourgas seems like a fun place to visit.

It seems like you've missed Monaco in the "COUNTRIES VISITED" map, I remember your report on the helicopter to Monaco.

Regards and look forward to your next report!

Hi Markus,

Nice report on your trip to Bulgaria!
This sure was a trip full of schedule changes and delays. Good to see it all worked out in the end despite needing to use a bunch of miles..
Bourgas looks like a very nice airport if you consider the airlines and aircraft that serve there, not something we see everyday here in Western Europe
Nice and interesting destinations pictures as well, like always

Thanks for sharing!

cheers,

Brendan

Thank you.

And guess what happened with that AirVia flight: "Hey, there is a certain Flieger67 booked on this service, no way he can depart that late in the afternoon. Let's change the departure time to a more suitable hour for him!"  ...

True words!.

Quoting CaptainRed (Reply 3):

Nice short flight on Bulgaria Air, looks much better than expected actually. Except for the delay of course, but at least you had these AB miles available to rescue you.

Also my impression here.

As always, great report! Bourgas seems like a fun place to visit.

Thank you.

It seems like you've missed Monaco in the "COUNTRIES VISITED" map, I remember your report on the helicopter to Monaco.

Good point. The map is not yet fixed, some work is still to do there. 250 flights to check!.

Hey Markus

Great report and read. Some interesting views of Bulgaria for sure. It looks different than I thought it would be. Seems some upgrades are still to be done in public places.

Bulgaria Air look ok.

Anyway look forward to your next adventure.

Thanks for this great trip report! It certainly brings some memories to my mind.

It is nice to see pictures from Bourgas airport. I have been there a couple of times. Terminal is not the most modern and it is quite small, but I like that outside terrace. It offers great views for spotting.

Hey Markus,

It's always fun to see other people's perspective of Bulgaria. Funnily enough I have never been to Burgas or that corner of Bulgaria in general (the only time I visited the Black Sea was on a trip to Varna when I was 15 or something). I like the blue roof of BOJ. It looks a little bit like a bad imitation of DEN's architecture. Nice that you got to meet and hang out with A. I need to make sure I meet him too next time I'm in SOF. Cool photos by the way. I love the, "rustic" shall we say, feel to them.

I hope you enjoyed your brief stay in our neck of the woods  .

Zdravei Markus,
Let me just say that I have waited this report and it worth it! Everything, every little detail is described like it was yesterday.'
Thank you!!! It was great specially walking to the airport.

AirVIA (Varna International Airlines) broke one of their airplanes thats why was this flight change.
Bulgaria air really sux. No help from their station manager at BOJ, no options - just wait and go to Sofia thats all. After all BOJ is their focus city with many daily flights in summer. For this 2 hour delay they gave us water and explained that we should be thankful because this is not their obligation. At FB desk in Sofia they promised you to return your money for unused leg, but they didnt.
Bulgaria air is better than most of low cost carriers, but far away from so called traditional airlines. They are something strange - more like aviation club than airline.

Once again thank you and hope to see you again in Bulgaria or somewhere else.
Greetings,
eco

Hello Markus,

Thanks for a great post which has made me write this comment, my first ever post on this site despite being a member for a number of years!

This trip brought back a lot of memories of my first visit to Bulgaria back in 1993 flying into Bourgas on a Balkan Bulgarian Tu-154 from Gatwick. Your Soviet style Hotel Bulgaria was where I spent my first night. All I can remember of the hotel is the gorgeous sunrise over the Black Sea the following morning.

I did another 5 visits to Bulgaria over the next few years, flying on Air Via just as they started up on their Tu-154Ms from both Glasgow and Edinburgh. They were always very great flights.

I may finally pluck up the courage to submit a trip report from my forthcoming trip to Prague in December!

Happy flying!

Iain

Hello FLIEGER67,

Another day, another story! Nice to see you flying some real Bulgarian metal this time and BOJ is nothing less than interesting - to say tht least. Good as well to see your problem solving skills at it’s best and it was for sure a nerve wrecking experience with the delay of FB!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
TUIFly does the job and sells chartered flights by the leisure company TUI beside the own services as flight only.
The fare is 125.00 Euro´s.

Also the case in Belgium where flights are sold independently of a package holiday. Prices are really really high though, except in the off season where you can find an occasional bargain now and then, but they charge a whopping € 15 service fee  Wow!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Is it really possible to fit in all these people in an A320?

So it seems like, high density config and the rest of the pax in the hold

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Weird t-shirts and sports shorts this early time in the morning.

Everything is possible when on a holiday

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Fresh designed

Unexpected here but good and modern looking!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Perfectly up to date, isn´t it?

Sometimes retro = modern

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
That´s the way how to built a car.

And a real solid one too!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
So elegant

A really nice machine    Have you flown a TU-154 yet?

Hi Markus,

Wow, that was one painful trip! It seems like you had the local guidance just at the right time, dealing with those problems at Bourgas. Great that you found a solution with AB at such short notice.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):

Quite amazing sometimes isn’t it, just how many people will fit in, packed like sardines!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
The beach

Now that’s what I call a beach. Perfect.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
The multi functional top notch board at the main train station!

Not too dissimilar to the bus stations on certain Greek islands.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Better take care here

You wouldn’t get me walking over them!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Bulgarian food is definitely something for me this way

Looks like my kind of dinner too.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Really lucky me, AB shows an flight SOF-TXL-FRA what seems possible to catch without a further delay, fixed
at 17500 miles, taxes and fees included

A good deal. All that shopping in Edeka paid off!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
The first ever time for me in an exit seat, trust me,

Really? Or did you forget the irony out button?
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Another grumpy welcome by the car "You´re late",
but better late than never, isn´t it?.

Your car has been grumpy quite a lot recently, hasn’t it?!

Happy flying

Hey Markus. Once again great report. But more impressive than the flights were the destination. What a great mix of sun, sea, sand and the Soviet Union!

Seems odd to see a 737 these days with no winglets and eyebrow windows in the case of the AB jet you caught. Nice and retro, despite being a -700.

Too bad your return flights got messed up, but I guess these things happen. At least you made it back to home base without too much fuss.

Hello FLIEGER67

Very interesting report, glad you could ease the pain with the AB solution from SOF. Of course not as interesting as your original routing.

The Tu-154 is nice. The only time I flew Air VIA it was on a Tu-154. Too bad they're gone.

Nice pictures from the salt factory, this was an unexpected addtion to your report.
