Like always i have been unable to post my trip report right away.Please do accept my apologies for that.Since i arrived here in Boston 4 days back, i have been really busy.....anyways here we go...
Summer break had all but ended...it was time to head back to Boston for fall semester but only if i had a seat.Typical of this time of the year, everything was sold out and even to get a seat on Business class was difficult on both my flights.Thanks to some hard work by my travel agent, i finally got a seat for the 31st of august.The departure time from KHI was 0045 and i left for the airport around 11pm after saying goodbye to freinds and family.This is the busy time at Karachi with flights going to Dubai (3 different),Muscat,Bahrain,Hongkong and NewYork.I made my way through the customs and then to the Swiss business class counter.Took me about 15 minutes or so there.Next step is to pass immigration, that took another 15 minutes or so.For those who are fimiliar with KHI airport would know about the ECL line or the "Exit control list" line after immigration.Army personnel make sure that someone who is not supposed to leave the country, doesnt manage to do so.The line for this was veryyyy long but thankfully there was another line for Business class pax.After this i made my way up to the lounge where i learnt that LX247 was delayed some 30 mins or so.No problem.....i made a few phone calls had a little to eat and before i knew it boarding for our flight was announced at gate 27.
After another security check point, i made my way straight towards the plane.I was greeted by the LX crew at the door and i was guided towards my seat 14A, a window seat.While the plane was being filled up crew served a pre take off drinks such as Orange juice,Water,Champagne...etc.I was fiddling around with the many electronic controls on the seat while sipping on to some chilled OJ when we started our push back.At the international terminal at KHI i saw a PK B743 going to JFK, a Ethiopian B767 going to DXB and Addis Ababa, a Cathay Pacific A330-300 going to BKK and HKG and ofcourse our very own A330-200 in the full Swiss livery.Our first leg of the flight was a short hop to Dubai.Warm towels and Menu cards were handed out before our take off on a cloudy Karachi night.I reclined the seat to its fullest and extended the leg rest.Although the Swiss business class are no doubt quite spacious and the ambience is very comfortable,i believe in this day in age a premier airline like LX should have a much better J class product.....perhaps something similar to CX or BA.They will launch that once their A343's come into service, according to the inflight magazine.The PTV that comes out of the hand rest, i must say, is the biggest personal TV screen i have seen in all the airlines i have travelled....even though the quality isnt very sharp.
The menu for our short flight to DXB wasnt all that comprehensive as you might expect....none the less we had a choice of 2 different salads to begin with.The crew lay down the table cloth very nicely and present the options on a tray for the passenger to see and decide what they want.I think thats an excellent approach.The salads were served in fine china and the serving size very generous.For the main course there were not many options other then Singapore Noodles with Shrimps which was again fairly decent. The dessert was fabulous i must say....absoluetely delicious.Choice of drinks was also very good.
When we landed in DXB after the 90 minute flight, we were told that today all pax continuing onto ZRH will have to stay in the plane as the flight was delayed somewhat.This was extremely dissapointing for me as i really wanted some things from the duty free.I have taken this flight many times before but this has never happened.Anyhow so i sat in my seat and watched the nearly half of the Business class pax and as it seemed nearly 60-70% of the economy class pax disembark at DXB.Swiss ofcourse enjoys 5th freedom between KHI and DXB.We sat as the plane was fueled, cleaned, the entire crew of the plane changed and the new pax came in.After approx. 50 mins at the gate, we began to push back.The plane was now 100% full atleast in Business class and im quite sure in economy it again filled....perhaps a couple of people in First class.Dubai was ofcourse very busy at this time of the day.The planes i managed to see from my window were many many EK B777-200/300's and A330's....a couple of PIA A300's,GulfAir A320,Kuwait A300,BA 777 Cathay B744F, SQ B744F,Ethiopian B767...there were many more there going to all over the world.I even saw a JAS A300-600 there!
After a long take off roll we headed north on a cloudless Dubai evening.The service started soon afterwards and after a light salad.....i had sliced chicken breast over vegetables.This was also a cold dish and even though it tasted very good......i expected that they would ateast serve a proper hot meal after take off from Dubai on the 6.5 hour flight to ZRH. A couple of hours into the flight while all the cabin lights had been switched off,i was heading back to my seat after a visit to the bathroom and i noticed that literally everyone in the J class cabin was asleep!! I tried to sleep myself but simply could not make myself comfortable enough in the seat.I tried every imaginable position but i must say that the LX business class seats could be sooo much better....specially the leg rest which is not only hardish but not long enough for tallish people. I resorted to watching movies and playing games.Sadly none of the movies were very good....Panic room was perhaps the best among them. A little less then a couple of hours before landing into ZRH the breakfast service commenced. First they served a fruit salad and then i choose a very nice cheese ommellete.Western Europe was getting its first hint of sunlight and we descended over a very cloudy Zurich at around 630am.After a rather rough landing we taxied towards gate A81 with ZRH just getting into its full flow.
I disembarked the plane and after i had a couple of smokes i climbed up to the Business class lounge.The business class lounge and the Travel Club lounge are essentially just like each other, even though they are in seperate rooms/halls.Like i have mentioned in previous trip reports,they are comfortable but nothing great at all....

Hmm... I gather you were not impressed with the seats. What is the make of this mysterious plane you were on? A330 or MD11? i will be on the MD11 later in the evening.... I wonder if the Business Class seats are the same on both the models?

Anyhow here I go with the rest of the report…believe it or not this morning I spent about 40 mins typing this 2nd half of the report and god knows what I mistakenly pressed, I lost everything!! …it was quite frustrating to say the least…
So I waited in the lounge for the 4 hours or so to pass by. There is not much to choose from at the lounge in terms of eating but that didn’t bother me as I wasn’t in the mood either. As far as drinks are concerned, that section is very good and is constantly being serviced to make sure all bottles and cans are full. There is also a nice smoking section out there.
My flight LX52, nonstop service to Boston, had a departure time of 1030.I made my way down through the stairs on to the duty free area at around 930.I checked the screens to find out my flight information and headed towards my gate. As I have mentioned before in my reports, there is a certain section at ZRH that handles LX flights going to the USA. There is a checkpoint here where all travel documents are examined before boarding. The lines here can be quite long but Business and First class did have separate counters so it didn’t take long at all. Boarding was announced for economy class pax and First class pax could board also board then if they so desired. After about 15 mins or so boarding for J class pax was announced.
I made my way into our shining A330-200 again in the full Swiss livery, and sat on my seat number 8A. This happens to be in the first row of business class and even though as I later found out the crew disagreed with me, I couldn’t help thinking that this row seemed a bit cramped. The wall in front does give an appearance of lack of space. Thankfully there were some empty seats left and I was glad to find a window seat, 10A for myself. Pre take off drinks were handed out….along with hot towels and menus. The amenity kits were already placed in the pockets in front as opposed to being handed out during the flight as was the case in my flight from KHI-ZRH. The contents of the amenity kit are very ordinary but the kit itself is quite handy.
I noticed this viewer gallery kind of place on top of what must be terminal B at ZRH. There were quite a few people there looking at airplanes and it was funny to see sooo many heads turns simultaneously towards the sky every time a plane took off. Speaking of planes….at ZRH I saw the same planes I see literally everytime I am there. This means tons of SR A332/MD-11 and A320/321’s…Continental B762, AA B763, Delta MD-11, Air Canada B763, Thai MD-11, Singapore B744, South African B743 and ofcourse countless European narrow bodies. We made our way through the taxiways and our captain announced we were 6th in line for take off. We made a smooth and long take off on a very bright yet cloudy Zurich morning. I noticed all those heads turn towards us from the viewer gallery area….that was a nice sight from the our rapidly increasing altitude. It is worth mentioning how much quieter the front of the plane is compared to the back. I remember being in the cockpit last summer and it was almost silent….and even the J-class cabin is much less noisy compared to Y class.
The attendant came around asking what we would like to have for lunch as the main course. There were about 3 or 4 choices and the one I found most appealing was this dish with deer meat. Infact I noticed that turned out to be the most popular dish on board as they soon ran out it. The other options were Veal, Salmon and chicken I think. The service commenced some after we settled onto an altitude. Table cloth was laid down and drinks were served along with very nicely cut vegetables with blue cheese. Fifteen minutes later they served a nice salad again in very nice china. Another 15-20 minutes after the salad they arrived with the main course. I was quite looking forward to have my deer dish. The only other time I have had deer was in Pakistan long time ago when I had Kebabs made out of deer meat. The dish smelled quite good and looked quite appetizing. The serving size was again decent. But I must say I was a little disappointed with the dish….the side of potatoes was very good but the deer itself wasn’t great. I guess it’s a very lean kind of meat…It would have been great had they made the same dish in Lamb or Beef.
I don’t remember if they served any dessert with this meal…. maybe they did. I just kept getting my glass filled with coke every now and then. Movies again on this flight were boring…I spent quite a bit of time playing “who wants to be a millionaire”. There was also a very interesting documentary on Queen Sheba of Ancient Yemen. So basically for the next few hours I just relaxed in my seat and watched TV. I must have fallen asleep while doing so and when I woke up I could not feel my legs. A classic example of how uncomfortable and hard the leg rests are on the business class seats. A very good moment in the flight was when they served ice cream on board. The attendant had a huge Movenpick box on a tray and she was serving people ice cream parlor style. You could either have it in a cup or cone. I had the ice cream in the cone and I must say it was one the best tasting things I have had on a plane…..my mouth is watering just remembering it. I think it was a caramel kind of flavor.
An hour or so before landing another very light meal was served…I cant seem to remember what exactly it was but I think it was light sandwich/salad with drinks. And after about 8 hours of flying our A330 began circling over lovely Boston. We flew south past the entire city and then made a U-turn flying over the harbor, I-93 South and Castle Island and made yet another rough landing( I think its company policy now ) on a clear and beautiful Boston afternoon…
All in all I must say it a good flying experience but I am firmly of the opinion that this Business class product does not befit an airline regarded as a premier airline…..not only are the seats quite average but I think the in-flight service could be more attentive and pampery…also the Business lounge at ZRH is not up to the standard….im sure AMS, FRA and CDG have much better lounges for their main carrier(the best I’ve seen is the EK J-class lounge at DXB)…..

To answer some previously asked questions:
CXHKG : No they have nothing to do with baggage actually…that is all taken care of by other people. There are certain people in Pakistan trying to run from the military government, these guys are here to make sure no one not supposed to leave the country don’t manage to do so. Ryanair : I mentioned in my first half that my plane was the A330-200….i even mentioned it was in the full livery. Hope you a had a good one…

Nice report. What time did your flight arrive in Boston? I was in Boston this summer and both times I was at BOS, I saw the LX A330 sitting on the ramp unattended by the cargo area in front of the International Terminal.
Also, I think Swiss is going to replace those interiors eventually.

With SWISS having just 'started' operations, I would think that it will be a while before they do any upgrades to their business class product. It is such a competitive market that airlines would not want to be left behind in the race!

I just completed a flight yesterday on a Swiss LX MD11 Business Class. Am I the only one to say "I am not impressed"?
The saving grace of the entire journey was the excellent catering. The seats were old and I had the most uncomfortable leg rest, inoporable lumbar support. My knees got numb very quickly. Cabin crew was just "ok" at best and was terribly cold at times. Personal presentation was the pits with some of them even having crumpled uniforms. I hope that this is just a one-off case. I remember a far more different Swissair!
How old is HB-IWL, by the way? The cabin was so old that the arm rest was so worn and dirty. I did notice the Y Class cabin had new seats though!
I will see how my return flight to Singapore compare to the outbound one. I hope for the best.

Swissair was one of the first users (or maybe the first) of the MD11.
It didn't meet their expectations. And even worse than that, the crash of the SR111 was probably due to the inflight entertainment system.
As a consequence, they cannot use it anymore.
As Swiss has decided to replace the MD11 with Airbus, they will not put money in a abin upgrade.
KHI747, your trip report is excellent, as usual. And I am very happy to see that Swiss keeps high standards for the service. About the deer you had ,it was probably served with a sauce with berries. (and/or red wine) Anyway, this is not very specy.
In this case, to really appreciate it, just drink water (or red wine if you like it), but not coke. It is to sweet and kills the taste of food.

I made a VERY VERY interesting observation last night on the picture data base on airliners.net..... no i was not lucky enough to find my own flight but i found the picture of the Continental B767-200 that i mentioned in my report.Whats more interesting is the fact that this plane was literally 2 planes behind us in the take off queue.The picture below shows the CO bird take off that very same day literally minutes after my plane took off from ZRH.

One thing you said about the ZRH lounge. It has been a while since I have been in it but let me tell you AMS is far worse than ZRH! I have been through AMS three times this year and have two more within the next 5 months and I personally find it one of the worst lounges in the world if it were not for the fantastic views of the planes. FRA is not a whole lot better than ZRH and neither is LHR. EK's DXB is fantatsic as is CX's in HKG. It seems to me that the European airlines have missed out what a lounge "should be."
Oh boy, if you are not impressed that means something was definately wrong with LX. Maybe a longer route would change your mind once those A340's are in. I really want you to write a trip report as I am very interested on how LX was. But hey, the crew could not have looked any worse than NW!

i also flew on the 31st to LHR from DXB on Royal Bruniw , and got upgraded to Biz class . after shopping around the duty free and heading towards the marahaba Lounge , i saw your aircraft and loads of people (a long que) board the plane to zurich !!We could have met or something , but inshallah , maybe next time ??

It really sounds like a great coincidence that your were out there at DXB that night.It would have been great to have met up there but then how would we have recognized each other .......anyhow yeah as far as the people waiting to go in there sure were alot becuase as i said the plane filled up again from DXB(alot of cute European girls...did you see any?).....
Englandair:This was infact my return journey as i live in Boston.You can do a search on here and find my flight TO Pakistan in the begining of July when my summer break started.I appreciate you liked my report so much...and yes definately the Business class of both SR and LX are literally the same so that argument that LX is letting SR down does not hold in my opinion.
