I was a bit bored today so i figured i would post this trip report of a trip i took late July 2000.

My mom, me and my little 3 year old brother ewre going to fly to Boston and then drive to Maine, where we would meet my dad who was flying in from Washington via Boston to Bangor Maine.

July 12 2000
Chicago-Boston
American 1508 dep: 3:20PM arr:5:15PM
Fokker 100

This flight was mid-day so I did not have to wake up at 4AM or something like that. The taxi came at 1:30PM and in 20 minutes we were at Ohare International Airport. At 2:10 or so we checked in. the line was not really long, about 10-15 minutes wait, which is alright because ORD is one of AA's hubs. Our departing gate was given as K6A. We walked over to the K concourse, ate some McDonalds, and 40 minutes before departure we went to our gate. There was an F-100 at K6A, but the agent told us that the gate had been switched to H1. H1 is the gate that is not in a councourse but rather right in the terminal. We walked all the way back and sat. Our F-100 was late coming in from Rochester, Minnesota, not New York. The time was shown now as 3:45PM, a 25 minute delay. At 3:05 the Fokker 100 pulled up to the gate, and passengers deplaned. At 3:20 boarding started for our flight. This flight was 100% full in both classes. I took my seat 8F, my brother 8E and my mom 8D. These were 3 seats on the 3 side of the 2-3. At 3:40 we pushed back. Taxi wasnt very long and we were 1st in line for takeoff. We took off on 9L and headed straight over Lake Michigan. Inflight service was alright, we were given teh usual bag of crackers and a drink. One thing i did not like about the Fokker 100 (this being my first time on it) was that there wasnt even any audio entertainment. I was left to sit there for 1 hour 50 minutes without anything to do, so i looked out the window. We turned over logan airport, my side of the plane pointing down so i got a view of all the runways and downtown Boston. We headed south and then turned around and landed on 33L. At 5:20 we deplaned, arriving only 5 minutes lat ealthough our flight was late. We were the first ones to get our luggage, so we quickly headed to the Hertz bus and rented a car.

We spend a day in Boston, then headed up to Bangor, where we stayed at the airport hotel. I got to see a Pan Am 727 with winglets. My dad arrived and the next day we headed for Acadia National Park and stayed there until the 18th. On the 18th we drove back to Bangor and dropped off my dad whose flight to BOS was cancelled so they put him on a later flight, but he missed his connection to IAD and since it was on United all they could do was book him on the 6AM flight. He ended up sleeping in the terminal. We headed off to New Hampshire and the White Mountains. Around midnight on the 19th we arrived in Boston.

American 429 dep:12:45PM arr: 1:41PM
Boeing 737-800

We woke up and after spending a couple hours in Boston, and some beach near the airport, at 11AM we arrived back at Logan. It was crowded. We returned our car and at 11:15AM were inthe check in line. After standing in line for about 10 minutes, they told us there was a whole separate line for flights to Chicago. So we walked along the terminal to a completely empty and much newer-looking check in area. We were second in line and so checked in quickly. At 11:40AM we went and ate some Pizza. At 12:15 boarding started, we were one of the first to board. We made our way to row 23 where we had 23A 23B and 23C. The 737-800 was very clean and new. Our airplane had the 'coach with more class' seats. It was rally nice, i liked the dark blue seats. The TVs were mounted in the aisle, so were not as good as the flip down screens on UAs A319 and A320s. We took off on 4L on time after pushing back at 12:44PM, 1 minute early. We had to wait a bit for takeoff clearance though. It was a good flight, again we got a bag of crackers and drinks. Over Lake Michigan we were put in a holding pattern, and stayed so for about 30 minutes, making about 5 loops over Lake Michigan before proceeding to Ohare. We landed at 1:53PM. At 2:00PM we were already at the gate and deplaned at 2:10. Arrival was 19 minutes late. We got our luggage after a very long walk, we arrived at the end of the K concourse. We took a taxi home, and were home at 2:45PM, making an end to a good trip.

Overall my experiance with American was alright, I expected the F100 to have at least audio entertainment. More room throughout coach was really nice. Here are my points for this trip:

American Airlines: 4/5 not too bad, could have been better
Boston Logan Airport: 2/5 sucks just like last time i was there
Boeing 737-800: 4/5 It was new and everything but the TVs were in the aisle, ruining the whole more spacious feel on Boeing's new design. I understand this was AAs choice
Fokker 100: 3/5 It flew me from A to B, but it was old and had old seats with no audio at all, so any flight over an hour can become bad. (which mine was)

Good Report.

How do your experiences vary from American to United?

I must admit that United seems to do everything much more profesionally and friendly. At both check ins, people were unfriendly and did not care about us (passengers) The flight attendants are more attentive on United, while on American i cant say they are bacd, but they do the minimum. they just do their job and thats it. United is my favorite airline along with Delta. American is below TWA on my list.
