First Leg: SNA-DEN
-------------------

I got to the airport about an hour earlier than I had to. For those of you who have been to SNA, you'll understand that I had no problem hanging around there. Great views and food. I checked in at the gate for my seat 28A. I sat down on one of the seats, staring into the cockpit of a UAL A320. The pilots were waiting at the gate for a long time to leave for SFO, and my plane, the 757, was waiting on the tarmac forever to pull into that gate.

Apparently, a little Cessna had a bit of an incident on the other side of the airport, and caused a lot of delay. The place was jampacked. They closed down runway 19L and turned it into a temporary taxiway for the big jets. Small planes and big ones were landing on 19R. When the time came, the A320 pulled out of the gate, and our 757 rolled in. It didn't take too long at all before they opened the doors to let us in. For the first time, I was checked at the gate. The lady asked me to step aside and enter a line (line of people being checked). The lady used the wand, and the guy checked my bag. All clear.

I walked through the jetway and into the plane, glanced at the cockpit (always have to do that), and walked to my seat--Window, of course. I immediately pulled out the headsets and tuned channel 9. Ground traffic was a mess...it took a good half an hour to finally get onto the runway for our "rocket take-off." I fly out of SNA all the time, but this was the first time that the captain actually made passengers aware of the steep ascent--and told us not to worry..The engines spooled up, and the plane was engulfed in the sound of the engines at max. We lifted off very steep, but after about what seemed like 40 seconds, the pilots eased back on the throttles and slowed the steep ascent.

I had a Cinnabon at the airport, so I wasn't too hungry. I took out my pad of paper and some excerpts from a book and began taking notes. I was on my way to Ann Arbor, MI, to visit UofM (where I want to go for college). One of the highlights of my trip was meeting a professor of political science. I had read excerpts from his book earlier, but I printed out the first chapter from the internet (which was a long chapter), and decided to study it on the way to Detroit...which proved helpful. Anyways, not too long into the flight, the flight attendants came over with their carts.

All we were served was our "savory mix" which was anything but savory. It was terrible really. Pretzel pieces and some other things to munch on. I was in a snacky mood, so I just thought: "meh..." and ate them. That and some water...No Ice--I didn't even have to specify it, which was nice. Usually I have to ask for some "water in my ice please.."

We descended into Denver at dusk. It was night by the time we were on our final approach. We flew over darkness...In the distance, through my window, I could see the airport lights. As we were on our approach, the control tower asked the flightdeck to extend our roll to the end of the runway. We glided in over the grassy field, over some tarmac, and floated over the runway for a smooth touchdown. We used no reverse (probably because they asked us to extend our roll). Very very nice. We taxied to the gate, and I had to run out..My connection was supposed to close doors in 3 minutes!

I got to the gate, and everyone was on board..they were making the final call. They wanted to check me again at the gate. The lady asked me if she could "wand" me..I was like: "knock yourself out.." So she checked me, and the guy checked my bag, and I had to take off my boots (which was understandable). I got through and into the plane, and settled in for leg 2.

DEN-DTW (coming...soon?)

hope you enjoyed

Excellent report. Can't wait for the DEN-DTW leg!

How where the FAs and the seats? The United FAs can be very helpful or very moody.
