This would be an interesting trip as it would be my first aboard Metrojet, my first aboard any US Airways Express carrier, my first aboard a Dash8 and my first time at Tompkins County Airport in Ithaca, NY. The first segment was to begin at 11:10 with a quick Dash8 trip from Ithaca to Boston aboard Allegheny Airlines dba US Airways Express. Unaware of the luggage policy I was set to check 4 bags with on carry on but a slightly rude agent informed me that I wouldn’t be checking in 4 bags. Ended up checking two, combining two and bringing two on (one was a small dress carrier). Other than that, check in was fine.
Unfortunately, once I got to the gate I learned the plane had mechanical difficulties upon arriving in SYR and would be held up there for 30-40 mins before coming down to ITH. It finally arrived and we departed roughly one hour late. My first impression of the Dash8 was a good one, roomy, not too tight (a real improvement over the Saab which I loathe). The 30 seat aircraft only boarded about 10-15 people and we took off quickly. The flight was very smooth and relatively quiet. All in all, uneventful and I ended up chatting with a good friend from school who urged me to come back a week early after winter break in time for rush week. ZBT, his frat, was going to throw some “chill” parties. We landed in BOS roughly an hour late and the De Haviland parked out on the ramp with its fellow Allegheny ships. We were escorted to a waiting bus and driven to US’ new Terminal B at Logan. Beautiful new terminal, very large and airy. I caught a glimpse of several (at least 5) new Delta Shuttle 737-800s in the very new scheme. Saw two TW MD80s and a two CO MD80s. Lots of American Eagle Saabs, they must have repainted the entire Business Express fleet. Looked like a fair bit of construction, but overall things moved smoothly at BOS.
I had only about 30 mins before my next flight to Palm Beach on Metrojet would board. Because of the delay in New York, I wouldn’t be able to take out a lobster roll from Legal Sea Foods which kind of sucked. The one shortcoming of the US terminal is that the Metrojet gates are secluded away from mainline US and I was forced to leave security walk over to their area reenter security. Because we were preseated, we eventually made our way back to the mainline US area and got pizza at Sbarro. Than again out of security and back in. Somewhat of a design flaw.
The Metrojet boarding area was packed as a nearby flight to MCO was scheduled to leave 8 mins before mine to PBI. Staff were very efficient in boarding both planes and the entire boarding process really look less than 15 mins. It helped that my flight was roughly 50-60% full. The 732 was fine, legroom I found was more generous than Delta Express and the plane was very clean. We took off on-time behind a DL 757 bound for ATL and headed south.
Like the first segment, the flight was fairly empty and routine. A man and a woman behind me became acquainted and probably had a little too much scotch, but no harm was done. The guy ended up being a club promoter. If anyone is going to be in Boston this Wednesday 20 Dec, Snoop will be at the Avalon (a very trendy hot club) performing. Two attractive stewardess were very helpful and the 732 descended right on time into a south Florida sunset. With the presidential election determined and the media fleeing West Palm Beach, I was very happy to be returning home for a restful winter break.
Cost of flight including a PBI-dca-LGA run on 4 Jan was $190 bought on Expedia.
