I don’t have a lot of time tonight ‘cause I have to go to class, but if I don’t share this with you tonight, I might not get it done! Anyway, my quick trip to the North American International Auto Show and my trip to see my buddy that just started Med School in Toledo.

Flight Number: Delta 1006—Boeing 757-200
Departs: Salt Lake City, UT (SLC) Saturday 18 Jan 2003 at 0610A
Arrives: Cincinnati, OH (CVG) Saturday 18 Jan 2003 at 1126A
Confirmed Coach/Economy Class Seat(s): 30F

I’ll try to keep it short! I left my house at 4:45 for my 6:10 departure. I arrived at Long Term “A” at 5:30 Am and took the Shuttle to Terminal 2. I used the Kiosk Check in (What a breeze!) and headed for the gate. With no delay at Security, I had a few minutes at the gate to relax before boarding.

We boarded 30 minutes before departure and pushed back right on time. Of course the FA’s had a hell of a time figuring out the IFE to show the safety video, and it was finally started during engine startup. We had a short taxi to 16L and the usual ROCKET take off in the lightly loaded 757. Boy do I love the 757! Drink started about the Utah/Colorado boarder and a few Biscoff cookies were served. The movie was Sweet Home Alabama (I’d missed Big Fat Greek Wedding by two days!) and so I didn’t purchase the headsets. About an hour before arrival at CVG the FA’s passed out the headsets for Delta Horizens. We landed on the west runway, facing south and taxied to Term. B.

Big Disappointment on this flight: FA’s on DL seem like robots. They repeat all of the announcements in their drab, monotonous, I hate my job attitude. Also what happened to a second drink service. This flight used to include breakfast, now it’s three biscoff cookies and a half a can of soda for a 3 hour flight! Piss Poor in my opinion.

Flight Number: Delta 5209* (Comair) CRJ-200
Departs: Cincinnati, OH (CVG) Saturday 18 Jan 2003 at 1230P
Arrives: Detroit-Wayne County, MI (DTW) Saturday 18 Jan 2003 at 0134P Confirmed Coach/Economy Class Seat(s): 06D

Well let me start by saying that this flight was in total contrast to my mainline flight to CVG, but I wasn’t surprised… I’ve received excellent service on Skywest and didn’t expect Comair to be any different.

CVG is a cool airport and I think DL should be proud to have it as a hub. Connection information was fantastic, and my bus ride to the Comair terminal couldn’t have been any easier.

We boarded 15 minutes before departure and pushed back on time. We took off heading west and turned north to DTW. On this short (1 hour flight) which was about half full, our awesome FA passed out drinks. She did it all from memory, about five rows at a time! Now that’s talent! She then came by with a basket of goodies, pretzels, cookies, etc. She left the can, and came by later to see if I wanted more! What a contrast to my last flight which was three times longer and only a half a can!

All to soon we landed at DTW and taxied to the skanky terminal. The McNamaran terminal looked nice, but ours looked like an old bomb shelter turned airport. What a sad welcome to Detroit. But I guess the terminal can’t be too nice, or the city would be a big let down…

Flight Number: Delta 519 757-200
Departs: Detroit-Wayne County, MI (DTW) Tuesday 21 Jan 2003 at 0650A
Arrives: Atlanta, GA (ATL) Tuesday 21 Jan 2003 at 0858A Confirmed Coach/Economy Class Seat(s): 23F

I got up way too early for this silly flight! I stayed at the Airport Fairfield Marriott so I had a five min drive to the terminal. Nobody was at the terminal or even on our flight. They offered a First Class upgrage for $50 which I would have taken advantage of except I was in lowly “U” class and couldn’t partake!

That’s ok, I had plenty of room in coach as this flight was less than half full. I watched delta horizons for a while and then slept till the initial descent into ATL. Not a bad flight. I got my precious can of CranApple, and more of those silly biscoffs.

We landed on 26R at ATL, and it surprised me how close you fly over the Ford Plant before touchdown. We waited forever to cross 26L, about 8 planes took off before we crossed. ATL is always fun, I saw the beloved 777 ship 7003 and a few MD-11s. I took my sweet time from Concourse E to Concourse A and by the time I got there, they were boarding the 767 to SLC.

Flight Number: Delta 1461 767-200
Departs: Atlanta, GA (ATL) Tuesday 21 Jan 2003 at 1010A
Arrives: Salt Lake City, UT (SLC) Tuesday 21 Jan 2003 at 1221P Confirmed Coach/Economy Class Seat(s): 18A

So, you’re probably wondering by now why I flew home through ATL instead of CVG, which would have been over an hour shorter. Well let’s just say I’m addicted to SkyMiles and I love ATL. So there you go.

Plus I wanted to fly a 767-200 before DL sends them out to pasture, which could be sooner than later. This particular bird was still in the old-old scheme which put a smile on my face. I got my favorite seat on the –200, 18A. Right on time for pushback the FA’s closed the door and we were off. The movie was the Barber shop, which after seeing it for a few minutes, I wished I had bought the headphones because it looked good. Oh well I had plenty of magazines. The snack on this flight was a chicken sandwich, a cookie and some crackers and cheese. Not too bad. We also got two drink services on this flight—a bout a 4 hour flight. Cruising across the USA on a –200 with a good magazine and a good drink is great fun!

The flight was oh so smooth, and I actually got some more sleep on the flight. It was only about 1/2 full, so there was plenty of room for everyone to spread out. The Capt turned on the seat belt sign over Colorado, but there was no need, the plane never even vibrated! Approach to SLC was great with lots of turns (we came in from the south, flew west of the field, then north with a 180 degree turn to line up with 16R.

And back to Utah I was. Overall, DL gets a “B”, and without the Comair flight they would have maybe gotten C+. Even though I complain, they’re still my airline and they have me addicted to those silly SkyMiles. I’d love to see a lot more enthusiasm in their FA’s.--you know, Southwest type enthusiasm! And for hell sakes, I think a three hour flight deserves a second drink service! Maybe the FA’s were just being lazy on that flight. Anyway, I welcome your comments!

Nice trip report. Have you thought about taking United on a trip like that? You'd fly SLC-DEN, DEN-DTW. If you left in the morning, you'd get a beverage service on the SLC-DEN with a breakfast snack mix. On the DEN-DTW flight, you would get a snack box with a breakfast sandwich or burrito, fruit and more breakfast mix along with a full can on soda/juice. Prior to landing, there would be a second beverage service. The flights later on in the day between DEN - DTW are scheduled to be 2 beverage services. United also has free movies and channel 9 live ATC on all flights (capt's descretion).

UNITED will stand!

ILUV767,

You know, that's an excellent suggestion. I never even thought of flying United to DTW. I've always wanted to try United, especially the channel 9 feature & I would still get skymiles on DL. I'll probably be heading to DTW again this year so I'll be sure to take United. I love DEN; it's been a while since I've been there, the last time on Frontier. Thanks for the idea!

Jeff.

PS, I'm flying DL to Orlando on thursday, both non-stop flights. I'll let you know if the service was any better.

Good job...enjoyed reading it...I haven't personally taken DL yet but I'd love to just to see how they compare to other majors that I've taken...
