I met with a fellow a.neter (SQ325) at Rwy 18 at FRA at 1500 and we did some spotting there and I took a few pictures of the Lan Chile A340 with which we would fly to Madrid that evening.
Then Fly-k joined and we drove to the airport together to check in for our flight.
At the counters in Terminal 2 there were no queues so we did not have to wait at all.
We than got our boarding passes which were printed in a nice Lan Chile style.
Since we both were a little hungry we went up to the McDonald’s for a meal.
It was roughly 1830 when we went behind the security lines to go to the gate. When we were there we were informed that we had to fill out the back side of our boarding pass with our name and phone number, but they did not really say why so we just did so...
After an Air Malta 737-200, the first first-generation 737 I saw at FRA in a long time, taxied by boarding started and than we entered the plane.
The cabin was very „non-conservative“ as the colors used were a mixture of purple and blue seat covers but that did really match good to the overall look (livery) of the airline.
You could very well sit in them but the most enjoyable part was still to come.
We taxied to runway 18 after boarding was complete and than the plane started to race down it to get the speed to lift of the ground.
Even though the plane was maybe only a third or maximmum half full it climbed very slow so it took a while until we reached the maximum altitude.
Once the plane made it the IFE system was unlocked and we both played around with it. Not only could you watch videos (video on demand) but it offered a variety of different options such as playing games. So until we got our warm meal the both of us played Othello and also tried a few other games.
The meal was quite good, very good if you consider that it was just a two hour flight.
After we ate we again played games until the system was locked again while our plane came closer to our destination.
After a very hard landing we taxied to the terminal and all passengers (also them that would go on to SCL an hour later) left the aircraft.
My conclusion about the airline is that I consider it overall great. After all the lowcost flights I was on in the previous months it was again really great to get a meal brought to you without paying for it. And the IFE is just great! But the F/A’s kinda pulled the airline down as they seemed to work after the book but maybe I am just too picky...
I will take a look at LA’s schedule for sure again if I consider a flight to MAD.

Flpuck6, we flew in economy. Fly-k flew standby while my flight was a normally booked one. We both checked in together, was normal for him aswell. The difference comes in when the flight is overbooked... Teva, the meal was a hot one. B737-700, LA has a special on that route. roughly 150€ incl. taxes. Germanwings or Hapag-Lloyd Express (soon to start flights to MAD) would have been cheaper... Our flight back was on Iberia since LA does not fly MAD-FRA on sundays. Sabena332, you did really miss something! Well but weren't you the guy that flew in a SAA A340-600?!?>:-> Ba319-131, you said it! Always check their schedule since they are worth every cent you paid.
Glad you liked the report even if it was not as long as my usual reports.

Ah, 346. chickenshit. In 5 years everyone and his neighbour will have flown 346, including you and me. But his 747SP ride, that??s something to be envious.
The A 340-600 flight was very good and I am happy that I was one of the first passengers who had the opportunity to fly on this great plane shortly after it was introduced by SA, but Daniel is correct, there is enough time for all of you to get a flight on this plane.
I paid a "high price" for the 747SP flight, my girlfriend was very angry because we had to leave South Africa one day earlier than we have planned (the flight on the next day was a boring 747-300), we had only one short conversation on the return flight to ZRH and it was like this:
She: "Idiot, we could sit in a nice restaurant in Johannesburg right now but you must fly on this fu**ing old plane".

Nice TR, I flew LanChile about three years back on the CCS-MIA-CCS on a 763. You really gotta hand it to Chileans, what an exceptional Airline!! Great and clean plane, excellent service, cute F/A´s (they were only cuter on the now sadly defunct Viasa!) and very good food. Not to mention the stunning livery! And by the way, the best price on this route. The only thing that saddens me is that they only flight out here on Mondays and Fridays.

thank you very much for your reply.
Then , there is at least ONE airline serving hot meals in Y on intra-European flights...
But it is not BA, or AF or KL. It is a South American airline !!!!

thanks for this trip report. What an unusual way to get to Spain You were flying Economy, one question: Where did you sit? Window and Aisle would probably be the best, nobody wants to sit in the central 4-abreast-block (was it 2-4-2 or what? sorry I'm not so familiar with the A340).

We both had a windowseat in the rear section of the plane but after take-off we sat together since there was not that much to look at during flight.
Yes, the A340 has 2-4-2 layout so during flight Fly-k sat at the window and I had the aisle seat. If we would have wanted to we could have each taken a row of 4 seats and used them as a bed but we didn't want to sleep on such a great flight!
