I arrived IAH at approximately 10:30am for my 1:25pm flight; this allowed me the chance to go to the new Terminal E complex. When I fly out of IAH I always checkin at Terminal B to avoid lines and then ride Terminalink over to C. They are also extending the Terminalink to D/E. The new facility is impressive, I ate at the Pappadeaux that overlooks the end of Terminal E. The food is great; however there aren't many good views of airside operations. I went over to C21 to to await arrival of the 757 from Anchorage and Seattle. CO73 was leaving for HNL from C14. Runways 8 and 9 were used for landings; while 8, 15L, and 15R were used for take-off. We boarded the aircraft and right before pushback storms rolled in. We pushbacked and held on the apron between Terminal A North Concourse and Terminal B; the captain shut the engines down and we waited. After the storm passed we restarted and taxied to 15L; Number 6 for take-off. I could see about 30+ aircraft in queue for departure. Holding at 15L for so long allowed great views of aircraft landing on 9; Lufthansa A340, Continental 767-400ER, and Air France 777 were the highlights. We left and arrived into MSY D3 at 3:50pm, just barely beating the rain.
Aircraft spotted: WORLD/SONAIR MD11, WORLD MD11 at old cargo, Express.net A300, Allegro 727-200, Air Canada A319, Lufthansa A340, KLM 747-400 Combi, several Continental Heavies, Air France 777,

Nice TR, hopefully Terminal E will bring some new destinations to IAH. Since Continental moved to Concourse D, has Southwest expanded any in B yet? Also, are they actually going to build their third runway? I haven't heard since I moved from there, thanks.

I went into Houston on Sunday. The third parallel is very much under construction, as well as its taxiways. It's far out there to the north though....

Southwest won't be expanding out of IAH and they use the North Concourse Terminal A.

The new parallel runway will probably be operational by the end of the year--that's the unofficial deadline for ALL Houston projects in town and at airports because of the 2004 Superbowl.

The consolidated rental car facility is impressive and almost complete.

Terminal E will open up new international destinations onece it is complete as Terminal D is running at Capacity at peak times. Flights to Belize City, Guatemala City, Puerto Vallarta, and Cancun were leaving from E when I was there.

The central concourse at Hobby airport is impressive as well; currently only four gates are in operation I believe and only Southwest flights to DAL, HRL, and CRP are flying from there; and maybe AUS

Unless I miss my guess, no1racer was asking about construction at MSY (the CO move from concourse B to D is the giveaway), so here goes:

Southwest has not yet added flights from concourse B. They have gates B1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11. I'm hoping for new MDW and MCI service.

The third runway (new north-south runway in St. Charles Parish) is in the environmental impact and comment stage. I wouldn't expect to see any concrete in place for a good 8 to 10 years.

We are currently reconstructing runway 1/19. The whole runway has been torn up, to a depth of 40" in places (I have my photos in hand), and will be replaced with Portland concrete. Also, taxiway Sierra will be reconstructed. The expected reopening is in November (although they are ahead of schedule).

Thanks Tom in NO, I was asking if they had expanded at MSY in Concourse B. I know Conti moved, and I was wondering. I have not heard anything since I have moved to Houston form N'Awlins.

I will have to agree that the new Concourse at Hobby is stunning. I hate the rule that a flight of your can arrive there from anywhere, but if going to say STL, one has to fly from A. I seem to always get the same gate, A3, kinda annoying.

Yeah, there seem to be some weird ideas coming out of New Orleans, especially that Cargoport idea, but I think that MSY is one of the most pleasant Southern airports to fly into.

Also, does Ryan Intl still bring in their D10's to Cancun?

Just interested as I might fly down or drive down and see if I can spot something

Hi no1racer,

I personally have not seen the Ryan DC10's in quite awhile...they seem to have been replaced by numerous Miami Air and Champion 727-200's...seen a lot of those recently doing CUN charters.

Tom could probably give you a better time frame on this than I can, but they are getting ready to open up a new foodcourt on the Southwest Concourse B in the short term, and one in the main terminal in between A&B as well.

I think we've done a decent job in adding new retail and dining options for an airport our size, and most of the feedback I get from passengers is that MSY is an easy-to-navigate airport with adequate facilities.

Also, new 7-story parking garage opens in September.

Not a bad place overall.

And Tom, I WILL stop bye this week.  Smile

I was flying in from SJC (see my trip report) the day you flew out, June 16, 2003. My flight was delayed coming in to IAH for about 30 minutes due to the weather. And yes, the Terminal E was impressive...very well lighted and high ceilings, just like DIA.

MSY food courts under development are as follows:

East lobby (between concourses A and B): construction will begin shortly, to open in October/November. Will likely include a Popeye's Chicken, Daiquiri's bar, and a Sonic Burgers.

Concourse B: already completed. Praline Connection in and open, Subway sandwiches, abd Blue Bell ice cream to open around September.

(Not to gravitate from the topic).

They could use some more food places at MSY. When I was there earlier this month for a 0700 flight to DCA, the only place that was open in Concourse A was a small bistro, where the breakfast menu was extremely limited. It was either that, or a ham breakfast sandwich on US Airways.

Also, what is going on with Concourse D at MSY? I heard it was being expanded, any truth to this? If this is true, can we expect to see NWA move over to D, since CO and DL are already there?

NIce trip report; I'm pretty jealous of some of the carriers you have down at IAH, with World having a decent sized operation (it sounds like), and having 747 Combis, which are unheard of at BOS.

I can give you a general idea on MSY Concourse D.....

Concourse D will be expanded by 7 gates. Construction will begin in 2004, and will take about a year to complete. Once complete, the concourse will have 13 gates, all of which can handle wide-bodies. Northwest will move to D...they currently use 2 gates on A....so that will leave 4/5 gates open on D for new carriers and/or expanded service from DL,CO,NW,HP. USAirways will remain on A I believe...they may have the option to scoop up the old Northwest gates I would imagine.

Should US move to D also, it would give Southwest all of A and B.

Hope that helped.
