We live 15 mins from MHT and would have preferred MHT-PHL..But couldn't
get the fare we wanted..So, we elected to leave from Logan..Assuming the
2hr before flight rule, we figured we'd have to get there around 330-4AM..So,
wound up staying up all night..Left for Logan approx 2AM with a stop for gas
and some munchies, then headed south on 93, arriving in the airport proper
approx 2:50, in search of economy parking, which we finally located approx
3:10, and were parked by 3:15AM. We then strolled over to the waiting area
for the bus that ran by every 20 mins. About 20 minutes later it did arrive and
we were at the ticket counter at 3:45AM, 15 minutes before it opened..once
checked in we waited about 20 mins for security to open and once cleared
we strolled to the gate where N355US eagerly awaited us.
Pushed back right at 5:30AM, taxied to 15R and launched at 5:39. Nice climb,
leveled at 260 where it was a bit bumpy, and the capt advised us we were
going to drop to 210 where it was a bit smoother..We took the opportunity
to doze a bit..Beverage service, of which we did not partake..The crew was quite pleasant..We continued on, landing in the rain on 9R at 639, at gate C20
We then had to take a long walk to the new international concourse (A) where
we were off to gate 25, I believe..a loooooooong walk..To hear that the flight
for which we were scheduled, 258, was overbooked and that they were seeking volunteers, enticing us with 2 roundtrip tickets to any US/Canada destination, and we could use them for Nassau since that was our destination..also, they would give volunteers first class from CLT-NAS..before
they could finish their announcement, my wife was at the counter volunteering us..and so, after considerable inputs/outputs on the computer,
we were armed with our new passage to clt-nas and our free passes..and
a ride on a little scooter to gate B9, the departure point of the PHL-CLT
A bit of frustration ensued as I attempted to use the calling card the nice
folks at US gave us..seems the operators for the card didn't understand
that I wanted to call Nassau and didn't quite know what to do (unfortunately,
it was difficult communicating with them)..once that was sorted out (after
3 attempts and finally getting an AT and T operator, we advised the hotel
we'd be late, and yes someone would be there to retrieve us once we arrived.
My nerves were shot (my wife loves to ask me questions and give me directions when I'm on the phone) and I figured I had time to sooth my nerves
and I availed my self of a guinness at a watering hole across from the phone banks..accompanied by "music" that had me wanting to scream at the top of
my lungs and yell invectives at anyone who looked at me funny. Of course,
I did neither, and we calmly strolled to the departure gate.

sorry..can't recall the seat numbers..9E and D, I believe
pushed back at 956, launched from 9L at 1010..nice fairly smooth ride where we snoozed quite a bit (lack of sleep and the excitement of free tickets just
too much for us)..my wife was still asleep as we touched down. I believe we
partook of the beverage service, both of us choosing a diet coke. We parked
at gate B12, I believe and only had to stroll to B2 for our Nassau bound flight..
Oh..we landed on 36R at 1135.

As we strolled up to the gate and neared the desk, we heard those words
my wife hoped to hear, and I dreaded "ladies and gentlemen, this flight is
overbooked and we need 2 volunteers..." we were right there at the podium..
my wife stepped over..I cringed "I just want to get to Nassau", I pleaded..
Same deal..2 free tickets which could be used for Nassau..only catch..arrive
at 1745 and connect in MIA..I would have liked free tickets had I not been so
exhausted and glanced at my wife's eager expression..and (hoping I was right)
said "Honey..the MIA-NAS portion of the flight will be on a 19 passenger turbo
prop" (I might have loved it..but I knew she wouldn't) and we have first class tickets on THIS flight..Her faced turned ashen at the thought..much as I love
airports and flying..with about 20 mins sleep in the last 27 hours..I'd had enough for one day, thank you..
We boarded the A321 shortly thereafter..my first time on one, and I was very
impressed..in fact, I've become a fan of Airbus aircraft after this trip (and our
last to FPO which were on A319s) and eagerly took our first class seats. Pushback came at 1256, liftoff from 36R at 1311, and a very nice smooth
flight over the ocean to NAS (well a few bumps)..lunch service was roastbeef
sandwiches accompanied by potato salad and, I must admit, 3 heinekins (sp?)which tasted quite good..
We landed on 14 at NAS (my wife sound asleep) and seemed to take forever
to slow down, the reversers/spoilers deployed seemingly forever. But, as is usually the case, we stopped in time to get the last taxiway and were off on
a long, slow, bumpy taxi to the gate..we were off the plane quickly, through
customs, found our luggage (which arrived on the PHL-NAS flight 258 a few
hours earlier, and were off to grab the van to our hotel, the Radisson Cable
Claiming our luggage was a treat..we were of course advised to contact USAirways baggage service at NAS and they would have our bags for us..we
arrived at said facilities (where CO, AA, DL ,et al had their baggage service)
and explained what we were doing there.."we're not USair" they replied.."but..
your sign says.." "we don't handle them see over there"OK..Where might that be?", I inquired, and they waved off somewhere over to our right, which of course
there was nothing there. I went looking, my wife asked somebody else at
the same counter and they replied "you just passed her!" It then dawned on
me that we were now on "island time" and our priorities/stresses aren't there's..So..I went for a stroll near the carousels and eventually found our
bags, being inventoried by the "baggage service" lady, and she was as excited as I that we had been reunited..I then was reunited with my lovely
(but tired) wife and off we went..thrilled that we were once again back in
our favorite vacation spot..
My apologies if this is too long, or doesn't conform with policy..my first
trip report..the return trip to be posted later..
One thing I might add..I was very pleased with all of the USAirways folks we encountered..at the gates, ticket counter, on the aircraft and from the cockpit. And..I've really come to love A319,20 and 21's. More on that
on the return report.
