Hey, I just found this place and it is awesome! It reminds me of the old travel BB on Prodigy... anyhow. I'm home in Hawaii right now so I'll give you the entire trip report for my christmas vacation.
PHX-MEM #1800 A320 ship # 3213 340p-735p
I checked in on the internet for this trip which is a really neat feature! Showed the agent my ID and tried for a silver elite upgrade... no dice. Went to the restrooms to find them nicely refurbished! After returning to the gate I found that the flight was boarding. Settled into my bulkhead seat 5F with tons of legroom. 5E was unoccupied so that was a plus. Doors closed at 400pm as we had last minute catering. We pushed off gate 26 and taxiied to the other side of the airport and took off on the newly renumberd rwy 7L (7R is the new one). Beautiful takeoff and climbout over the superstitions. Sunset soon followed and the drinks started. Dinner was served and the choices were philly cheese steaks or a chicken fajita sandwiches. I had the chicken which was great. Mini carrots and a cookie were also served with more drinks. Fell asleep for a bit and then read a little without a reading light (I know mom, bad for my eyes), but 5E's light helped a bit. Landed ontime in a deserted MEM but as always soon became a bustling airport with the last evening bank of flights for NW. I had some time to kill so I wondered around looking at the newly refurbished sights. My next flight was an airlink flight and departed out of A9. NW5915 CRJ seat 1F 915pm-1035pm. Full flight on this awesome new jet. It was my first time and was pretty impressed. Pushed ontime and arrived to a very unusual sight... a snow covered Tulsa! Had a great visit... the return a really long day. TUL-MEM-LAX-HNL.
December 18, 2000.
NW5950 TUL-MEM 635am-750am CRJ seat 1D boarded ontime and lef the gate early. This flight was about half full and was really nice. Had a cup of airline coffee which did a number on my empty stomach, but I'll spare you the details of the rest of that constitutional experience!! =) Landed in a very cloudy and low vis MEM. The next flight NW551 MEM-LAX airbus 320 ship# 3269 (the second to the last one delivered last year!). 905am-1115am. Boarded through gate B3 a little late as the a/c was a bit late getting in from MSP. On this 100% full flight we were settled in when the captain came on and announced that it had started to rain freezing rain and that we would need to be deiced. Boy, that was met with a lot of disaproval. HELLO people?? The flight instructor instinct started to kick in and I wanted to lecture with plane on the safety of iced wings on takeoff! (anyone remember air florida into the potomac???) Anyhow he explained since we were one of the last departures in the am bank of flights it would be about 45 minutes before we could leave and that we needed to stay onboard incase we left early. And that we did... at about 945am we pushed and got inline for deice. We were #5 for that and I started to get worried about my connection in LAX to HNL. We were done and off the grounbd at 1030am... on our way to LAX. Flight time was a long 3:55 due to headwinds. Service was typical great NW service. Breakfast was served with our combonation of the following: hot egg and cheese biscuit, cheerios, banana, yogurt, bagel and cream cheese. I had some OJ and a banana and the sandwich. I would usually have eaten more but remember the airline coffee on the first flight??? i sure did. We had 2 other beverage walks during the flight before arrival. Anyhow... I took this flight before and the route took us due wer over AK, OK, TX, NM, AZ (right over DRK!) and then into LAX. On this flight due to the winds I imagine we went NW up toward CO, then SW over LAS and then into LAX. I toured the NW facilities once and we spoke with the chief dispatcher and the reason they do this is to fly perpendicular over the mountiains which cuts down on turbulence. Hence the coined phrase... "follow the red tails!" Anyhow, landed exactly to the second the crew told us we would at 1216pm. Still worried about my 1255pm connection that was put to ease as a NW DC10 landed behind us and eventually overtook us on the taxiway. The captain announced (oh yea, he kept us well informed of where we were during the flight in addition to a bit of history on lake powell and lake mead!!) " on the left side of the a/c the DC10 taxiing by us the the a/c for the HNL flight, its late too due to weather out of the twin cities so you lucky HNL bound passengers need not worry!" What a relief that was. So we disembarked at gate 24A and my flight to HNL was at 28 and was rescheduled at 115pm. I hit the head and was back to gate 28 to checkin. Again, I politely asked about a silver elite upgrade and the question was met with, "well, usually there is not silver elite upgrades to HNL." To which I responded "oh okay" but found him telling me, "but I'll give it to you anyway!" How nice! This is the second time out of LAX that I've been upgraded to F. It makes total sense... upgrade the elite members, to open up seats in back to get everyone on! Cool. NW935 LAX-HNL DC10-40 ship #1151 (this is about the 10th time on the a/c! I had a near inflight emergency on this one... I'll tell that story later other wise this thing will be 10 pages long... 10 years of flying NW, I've got lots of stories!) seat 6A. Boarded and found this a/c to be on the of the domestic DC10-40s with no PTVs in first and without the newly refurbished lavs and new overheads. Oh well. I was greeted by a very cute flight attendant that looks like Renee Zellweger (I recognized her from a HNL-LAX flight I had while going back to college in January of 1999. It was during the famous NW DTW snowstorm fiasco and that rippled all the way to Hawaii! Anyhow, I sat next to her and we talked - she didn't recognize me this time) and she offered me a mai tai. I had water. Seat 6A is right infront of the boarding door so you can eavesdrop on a lot of interesting conversations!! Anyhow, the door closed at 115pm and we pushed at 125 due to alley traffic. It took us forever to start the engines and then taxi all the way to the other side of the airport to take off on 25R. That old, yet very sexy red tailed bird lumbered down the rwy and we were airborne past the bradey teriminal at 205pm. Flying time was 5:19. Shortly after takeoff hot towels were passed out (real ones now! not like before in domestic FC) and we had drinks and the snack basket. Menus were also passed out and on the menu was... curried crab salad with veggies for an appetizer, the choice of tequila lime grilled chicken accompanied by spicy couscous and other veggies or braized spicy bbq brisket, black beans (dangerous while flying) and a spicy orzo. To follow was a mixed greens salad with baby spinach and warm bread. Desert was a sundae with your choice of toppings and then before arrival warm cookies and milk. WELL!! having had the bbq beef and beans before I decided I wanted the chicken. When the FA got to my row he told us the wrong menus were boarded and that the appetizer was different and the chicken dish was different as well. So the appetizer ended up being smoked salmon and cucombers with dill. I passed on the beef and got this chicken creation that was not that bad, but a little bit disapointing for NW. I ate it all as I was famished and then the salad with a lemon rice wine vinnaigrette was had. Desert was great... choco sundae no nuts with a coffee. The movie was started shortly thereafter and it was toy story II. So I put the seat back, got the foot rest out and relaxed. I ended up falling asleep halfway through which kinda disapointed me but oh well. A warm cookie and out choice of drinks were servied prior to landing. Did the ag form thing and no "Hawaii wlcome guide" was shown to my disapointment. We landed on 8L and arrived at gate 11 at 450pm (only 13 minutes late!). A great NW flight as usual but it could have been better. I really like NW's new FC service with the mini water bottles, course style serving and the cookies and sundaes for desert!! I hope to try the new World Business Class soon!
Thanks for reading the long mail and if you want to hear some of the stories like the stranded in DTW for 6 hours on spring break, smoke in the cabin over the water, diversion to BRu on a PHL-AMS flight in WBC let me know!
