My first flight since January last year was with QantasLink and Virgin Blue from Maroochydore/Sunshine Coast to Sydney, on a 717-200 (VH-VQH) and 737-700 (VH-VBK).

Friday August 8, QF1723, MCY-SYD
After arriving at MCY airport at 0915 for a 1030 departure with QantasLink, I saw my plane touch down on runway 36, and after 10 minutes, I was called to boarding. Out onto the tarmac for the short walk to the aircraft I went to my seat (11F)...a nice seat just in front of the wing. Right on 1030 the doors were closed, and the engines started. After a few seconds warming up, we started moving, turned around onto the tarmac, and out onto the taxiway for the backtrack to runway 36. The engines spooled up, and we were on our way. I was quite surprised at the power of the 717 having never been on one before. Airborne from Maroochydore's short runway and an immediate right turn out over the Pacific, and we were moving out toward the sea. We then turned in towards Brisbane. We flew inland over eastern New South Wales before the descent into Sydney. We flew over the west of the city, before turning east, flying past the harbour out to sea for about 5 minutes, and then turning right for the final approach to runway 25. A beautiful low approach over Bondi Beach, we finally settled onto a breezy runway in Sydney. Taxying back to the Qantas terminal I saw a Qantas 767 taking off, and the United 747s awaiting their departure back to the east coast of the USA. We arrived at the terminal at about 1215, 10 minutes late, but it was a lovely flight!

Tuesday August 11, DJ473, SYD-MCY
Having spent 4 days in Sydney I was happy to be at the airport waiting to board my return flight back to the Sunshine Coast. Our flight was DJ473 operated by Boeing 737-700 VH-VBK "Lady Victoria". Our scheduled departure time was 1005, arriving back at MCY at 1130. We were off at 1000, and out for the long taxi to runway 36R. One thing I noticed about Virgin Blue was that their seats are so upright that it is extremely uncomfortable. That aside, this flight was a much better experience than my last flight with them. We flew out over the city and the harbour, which was a little hazy today. It was a lovely flight north, coming in over Stradbroke and Moreton island on our descent into Maroochydore. It was great flying into my airport for the first time...flying over all the places I knew so well. Touched down at 1125 as we had a tailwind. It was a great flight, and I really enjoyed it.

Hey!! Whazzup?
How did you like flying with Qantas Airlines? What kinds of foods did they serve, and what kinds of beverages? Were the FA's nice, and was the flight crew informative?
How'd you like flying on a Boeing 717? They are really great! I flew one with AirTran Airways (here in the States) and it was unbelievable. It was really quiet, even though I was back near the engines, and the seats are nice and firm, just like I like them. They might make you feel a little cramped if you're bigger than me (I'm only 5' tall and 88 lbs. so I was fine), but other than that they are really nice aircrafts. Glad you enjoyed your flights. God bless!!!

-Chris

PS: Was it like super cool to see Boeing 747-400's up close? I bet it was even cooler what them take off.

Hi Chris,
As this was my first domestic flight with Qantas, I can't really say, but their F/A's were quite pleasant. We got a little box with an apple, a small cake and a cup of water, which was fine for a short flight. The 717 was really nice, very powerful on takeoff! As far as quietness was concerned, the 737 was much louder than the 717 (but this is understandable as the engines were in front of us). The legroom for me (as always, being 6'1") was a bit cramped, I wouldn't want to sit there for longer than I would have to.

I have been to SYD once before to spot, and believe me, the beach at the entrance to Cook's River is amazing, the wings of the 747's almost pass above you!!

Thanks

Goodbye

Your first impression seemed to be a good one. Do you think you'll continue flying Qantas, and would you recommend it to others? I do agree with you with about it not being very spacious. They are pretty tight fitted (and I'm only 5' 0" tall).

If you fly USAirways with their Airbus A321's and Airbus A319's you'll find that the space is incredible. I really enjoyed the space because I surely needed it for the 2 hours and 30 minutes I spent in the air. You will not be disappointed.

That would be really nice to have a busy airport nearby to spot planes. I live about 2 hours away from airports, but the regional airport here in my city only caters to turbo props (I think that's what they're called).

Thanks again!

-Chris

Hiya Ash!!

Very nice trip report! short but informative! glad you liked flying Qantas and that your experience on Virgin Blue was more pleasant than your last one!

I can't wait for the day I fly to Sydney! Hopefully next year if everything works allright.

All the best!

Chris.  Nuts

I think, therefore I don´t fly Ryanair.

Hi Chris #1: I think judging by this experience that I shall indeed be flying Qantas again. Virgin Blue once again did not offer me a particularly good flight, however it was much better than my previous flight with them in which the flight attendants were unfriendly, and we had to walk through the rain with no umbrellas or assistance from the crew from the aircraft to the terminal. A320's certainly do have plenty of space, I have flown them more than any other aircraft, and they are wonderful  Smile

Chris #2: Thanks! :-P

Adieu
