This was my first time in Sydney. The usual trip before was ATH-BKK-MEL-BKK-ATH because the Olympic airways crew used to stay in bangkok and melbourne. Now they stay at sydney. I am refering to this because my father was a pilot and i must have been with him to bangkok and melbourne for over 15 times(there was one ATH-BKK-NRT-BKK-ATH before olympic halted service to tokyo). We used to sit on the upper deck. The seats were comfortable enough but the aircraft 747-200 was old-fashioned. The flight departed at 7:00 to 7:30 in the morning. I think that the first meal was breakfast and was served 1.5 to 2 hours after takeoff. I would eat most of it, because it was good comparing to the economy meals. It would have omelette with fruit salad, hot bread with butter, honey and jam. After that, i would listen to my walkman. The one thing i remember is how quiet the upper deck was with only 12 passengers, especially one time when the flight was almost empty(total of 80 passengers). my brother and i would have the upper deck for ourselves. Anywhay, after the 1st meal the movie would start projecting on the pull-down screen that reminded me of something that came out from the 70's. The first thing that we saw was a mini video of olympic airways being followed by an episode of Mr. Bean. Then we would see a documentary of Greece and then the film which was most of the times rather interesting. All the window covers would be closed so as for complete darkness to exist. It was quite boring while all others were sleeping so i would go to the cockpit and sit to one of the spare seats. The arrival at bangkok was almost at 11:00 pm local. We would go straight to the hotel and sleep. The BKK-SYD leg was quite boring because the flight would depart late at night and we would eat dinner, having a choice between fish and meat (or turkey at christmas). Then, if i could stay awake, I would watch the film and then sleep until late in the morning when breakfast was served. After a while, we would arrive in sydney. In the case of going to melbourne some years ago, we would make a stop-over at sydney for about an hour and then depart for melbourne. There was this one time when my father opened the overhead cockpit hatch and showed me the whole aircraft from above. It was fascinating. The returning legs of the flight were the same except of the fact that the aircraft was almost full. I once had to sit in the last row and then sit with two friends on the upper deck(meaning that there would be three of us sitting in two business seats by removing the remivable middle armrest). In terms of service, Olympic can seem either good or really bad. Sometimes, flight attendants can be so bad that you want to slap them! But most of the times they are kind and helpful. For most of the people that like fancy airlines, olympic is not for them(But wait, I havent checked out the 340's yet, thei might be good even though i have heard that thet are really really crampy in Economy class. A friend of mine travelled in one of them and said that he had to have his video screen a few centimeters away from his face while the passenger in front was sleeping!!!!!!!!!**OH MY GOD****)

Hi Lewis,

at the end of your report, you we're talking of their new A340. I know somedy who recently flown from Montreal to Athens (I'm actually from Canada) on this 10-hour flight and it seems that it's true to say that the seats are crampy on this aircraft. Her flight was in economy and I'm sorry to say that Olympic seems to be far from international standards. She reported that they've served only one beverage and the meal wasn't good at all! The flight attendants were very bad and not friendly at all too. Another thing I was suprised about was that Olympic still permitt smoking on board a thing that is prohibited and all airlines in Canada and in the US. Is Olympic a kind of Aeroflot?

Pari when was your flight? Because they retire the 742's couple months ago...I flew on the OA A340 on Economy and it wasent bad at all... True that there is More leg room but also true that the seat in front of you is kinda closer to you ...hard to explain hehe.
PTVs everywhere and i had the flight with the "Good Crew". I was chatting with this male F/a telling him how much i like planes and he asked the pilot if i can stay on the cockpit..after a lil while he came back and ...there i was! I was impressed how the pilot was talking to me and talking about the future of OA hehe. And the best part was the Glass Cockpit ...man you'll love it. This was the first time the crew was so good....when i used to go on the 747 cockpit they where just ignoring me..! I liked the enterior alot very clean and a very quiet aircraft.. I made a phone call to my father ...He will never put a foot on a plane. and he loved the sound of the plane inside and then i also visited the bussiness class whice i really like the seats ...Everyone in there had them extended to beds.. it was really kool...I took 1 pic from outside on JFK which i will post in a few weeks....Happy flying and post some more Pics for OA!

It's funny that we all agree OA is really not up to international standards - but either is Greece!
Anyway - the F/A's on OA are fine on flights out of ATH, their home base, because they are rested after having several days off. Also, the flights to North America, JFK, Toronto, Boston, leave in the morning when the crews are fresh and perky.
The return legs, from North America to ATH is just the opposite situation. The crew is coming off a 2 day layover which they spend shopping their brains out in the department stores filling the special request orders from their friends for "TommyHilfiger" "Polo" "Timberlands"
etc..
They then board the aircraft in the evening, and they are exhausted before the passengers even board!
They dish out the meals as if they were playing a fast game of Black Jack - pick them up and run back to the galleys not to be seen, not even once, until the sun comes up and they push out the breakfast trays.
The only way this will change is of someone buys the airline and privatizes it. Maybe someday! You never know!
By the way, nice report Lewis - sinharitiria!

Well, my first trip of the kind was in june 1993. Since my father's retirement, i have never flown on the newer 340s that replaced the 747s.
